you think a Harlem World think it's not a game my life has changed tremendously every time I think about it and I used to come home and watch videos now I'm in the I'm the guy that's in the video now you know everybody loves bad boy but you know there are a lot of girls out there that like you too so why do you think that the ladies are like really feeling me I don't know I guess my voice I just talk real slow [Music] because everybody can live when you're on top can you stand on top that's the real question Mason javel Bethel better known as mace was born on August 27 1975 in Jacksonville Florida he was born as a fraternal twin and was two months premature he grew up with two brothers and three sisters including his twin sister station born a few minutes after him their father Mason father lucky Betha left the family when mace was just three years old his mother moved with her children to Harlem New York where may spend most of his childhood like many other Spears young mesos left without a flatter figure and to make matters worse he had watched his mother suffer from cancer however his mother was one strong woman and she felt determined to support her children to the best of her ability she wanted to keep her son away from the violence that pervaded the inner city neighborhood later in life may stated in an interview I grew up on the block with 10 guys now eight of them have been killed and the other two are still in jail and half of the people in the world knew my real story they would be like how could he smile every day miss out a lot of nugget to Childhood experiences which included carrying a friend to the hospital but not reaching the emergency room in time to save his life as well as living in the home that at times had no heat during the cold winter months while his mother tried as best as she could during his early teenage years it didn't take long before mace started to get in trouble on the streets of Harlem thankfully when he was 13 his mother sent him back to Jacksonville to live with relatives and keep him off the streets this is where maze frisbegun attending church on regular basis he said you know down south you have to go to church I don't care how hard you think you are but any dance of parents or Guardians alike you going to church so when I first when I first started getting into a little bit of trouble in school my mother always told me you gotta go down south he's starting to speed I don't want to see you turn out like God that you know or whatever so I went down south and I came back with a lot of a lot of good values and I came back up here with the mind of a 30 year old but I was really liking it what part of downtown Jacksonville Florida even after young mace returned to his mother and siblings back to Harlem the lessons he learned about the religion continued to stay with him he returned to Harlem and began showing a promise as a basketball player before climbing to the top of the hip-hop scene mace dreamed of one day playing for the NBA and looked up to basketball Superstar Michael Jordan better than Puff Daddy he became the leading point guard for his team at Manhattan southern high school during the 1993 season where he played alongside camera on gills who went on to be known as rapper Cameron I was more or less thinking imma go to the NBA I'mma buy my mom that big house that big car I just rap as Plan B unfortunately his chances of becoming a professional basketball player grew dimmer when he was unable to make it into a division one college due to his poor academic scores he attended the State University of New York at purchase on a basketball scholarship where he grew to realize that he was unlikely to make it to the NBA and instead shifted his Focus to writing music producing demo tapes and performing at local nightclubs with other rap hopefuls around this neighborhood some of his early rhyming Partners included the logs the America Max McGrath Big L and a group called Children of the Corn whose members included mace better known as murder or murder maze to the rap scene of Harlem killer Cameron cam McGrath Big L and bloodshed his sister Stacy tolfontaine I used to invite my friends over to listen to his demos they used to always think he was hot and wonder why this song or that song wasn't on the radio subsequently maze drawn by the compliments of his fellow rappers and his family decided to concentrate on a career in music he hired a new manager named country who encouraged maze to tone down this rhetoric and produced a new demo tape that he hoped would catch the attention of a rocker company after so many struggles and hardships mace finally had something that could change his life forever now the only thing left was to find the record label willing to sign him confident about his new sound and Direction they stuck his State and traveled to Atlanta Georgia to attend a music convention upon his arrival he hoped to meet an impressed producer and rap artist Jermaine Dupree of social death records however mace got the eye of another famous record producer none other than Sean Combs better known as puffy Puff Daddy or other seven names he went by during the years he heard about maesto other rappers such as Lokes who are newly synags for Puffy's Bell by entertainment label he asked mace to spit him some Rhymes and after hearing only 16 bars of rapper's music he offered him a 250 000 record deal and did you believe him or did he like prove it right then and now like a week later he gave you phone calls and just contracts what happened now when I came back home I had a BMW I went and got all my friends no you didn't it was not sitting in front of your house with a bow on it out with the vulva with the kids that's all that matters within a week of signing to the label Betha has a stage name shot him for murder maze to Simply maze to make his name more marketable he was first featured on and in the video one two three is only you with notorious b.ag may be the one that'll take you home on January 3rd 1997 he helped to write and rap on the single which was by Puff Daddy himself called can Nobody Hold Me Down if it ain't about no money Puff I just don't care the single eventually became two times Platinum these two songs were the first songs that he worked on and both were a major success unfortunately only two months after can Nobody Hold Me Down release on March 9 1997 Christopher Wallace better known as The Notorious BIG was gunned down in Los Angeles California he was only 24 years old Wallace also known as Biggie Smalls was shot from a passing vehicle he had been named rap artist of the year at the Billboard Awards in 1995 he was considered a rival of West Coast rapper Tupac Shakur who was fatally shot in September in Las Vegas while biggest death left a huge ride in everybody's Hearts it also left a void in Bad Boy Records mace Buff's newest Prodigy was immediately thrust into his spot and now the pressure was on him may help to finish and was also featuring the biggest second posthumous single More Money More Problems which eventually became Platinum I'm your host for the day mace Gumbel the success of all of these singles how to bring mace's name face and voice into millions of American homes he finally had enough Buzz around his name and on October 28 1997 mace released his debut album called Harlem World the album debuted at number one on Billboard 200 and sold 270 000 copies during its first week the album was entitled Harlem World because everybody that died for the cause and Harlem and suffered a whole lot for Harlem they just mean the world to me and I wanted everybody to know that even to the smallest people on the map that did anything to help Harlem or help any person coming up mean the world to me so I wanted to include the world and connect it with my little world called Harlem and just United as one big family harlemen it also features artists like Jay-Z Little Kim Busta Rhymes Eight Ball And MJG Deluxe total and DMX it also spawned his singles like feels so good what you want 24 hours to live and looking at me what you know about going out Head West May stole them TV about us for a solo effort well basically what I'm trying to establish is a strong identity and foundation for mace so a lot of people could know that misses his own person and this can do other things besides rap and music and things of that nature the album was a huge success and it went on to sell 4.8 million copies in the United States and eventually was certified four times Platinum ten thousand people with a solo career in full swing in 1998 mace from the zondwakar company all out records and signed this first new group called Harlem World although may still enjoyed working under the guidance of Buffy and Bad Boy Entertainment he felt that other weapon hip-hop artists including his sister also a member of Harlem World desired more creative control Macy's new group which included lot of funds from Harlem released their first album called mace presents Harlem World the movement in 1999 critics gave the release overall praise and Vibes stated that harlemwal is a well-produced album that bounces the sounds of the world's most famous neighborhood off of seven young energetic and strikingly different MCS the album was later certified gold fake security fake Securities [Music] but he's on his way out but that's all that's baby Stace right there that's my twin sister sorry she couldn't look like me but that's a whole nother life was finally good for mace his album was doing really well he was finally a good financial situation in his family and loyal friends were also eating well throughout the next couple of years mace made several guest appearances and features with other rappers part a new manager basketball legend Irvin Magic Johnson owner of Magic Johnson music and was also working on his next project called double up when asked about the upcoming album in an interview mace told them my first album I gave the people what they wanted but this time there's going to be a whole different mace when a road Harlem World I was on the road with puffy every day and there wasn't too much hardcore music I could make out of that scenario but this album I was in the hood and it's going to be 100 me no Glitter no nothing but before the album hit the record slow shelves in June 1999 May shocked the music industry as well as his faithful fans for one more time throughout the 1998 whenever asked about this future plans maiska remind the government that he's not just a rapper and even went as far as saying that he doesn't want to make a second album I know you haven't gone double time and what do you have coming up are you thinking about your second album already yeah I don't really want to do another album I want to do something else I'm not touching that at all I don't want to do music that long anyway really why are you say that I like I'm intelligent enough to do other things besides me so music's not here for you music is in my heart but music was a plan B music wasn't my first love and so like so it wouldn't be my last night while some people speculate that he was only hitting on a girl and it didn't mean anything if you remember a year prior when asked on MTV about his last album you kind of got off track and specifically mentioned mace can do other things besides rap and music at the time people thought nothing of it and were dying to hear something new from Ace unfortunately on April 20th 1999 anyone from fans to music industry suits were shock when mace went on Fung Master Flex and during an interview he announces retirement from rap I got my man mace on the phone what's up baby I'm trying on flags I feel mad good I gotta let um facts today from Magic Johnson music it says mace's retired from the rap game I was happy you know about anything I'm leaving money behind and a lot of things as you know how I fell in my heart [Applause] everybody so you say you don't want to make any more albums I want to make no records I don't want to rap on the records and I don't wanna the official press announcement came from Magic Johnson entertainment as of today bed bug multi-platinum artist maze declares that he will be retiring from music to follow God effective immediately mace himself later declared to Newsweek it's time for me to serve God in his way I've always known that there was something else out there for me to do not just this stuff because like I said before this isn't real and I gotta deal with reality there's no way to stay true to the game the real game of life it's interesting to think that at the height of his career when everything you ever wanted is finally at your disposal you leave it all behind but a greater good a month later on June 15 1999 he released a second and last album for time being called double up it debuted at number 11 and sold 250 000 copies in its first week the album was later certified gold it also spawned one single called get ready in support of his new album maystone to make appearances to sign autographs but not actually perform after the release of the album Mason rolled as a freshman at Clark Atlanta University and began taking classes on August 19 unlike other freshmen Miss was permitted to live off campus and commute but he is said to have downplayed his past as a rapper and stayed fairly low-key while on campus during this time he gave back to his community to basketball programs helping children to go to college donating scholarship money sponsoring charity events and doing speeches well it seemed like he was doing better than ever after a five-year Hiatus for music during which he became an ordained minister mace made his return to music with an album called Welcome Back In Summer of 2004. the album debuted at number 4 and sold 188 000 copies in its first Suite this was mace's first album to not have a parental advisory warning hello boys and girls how are you it's fun to be singles called Welcome Back Breathe Stretch Shake and keep it on the album portrayed mace's new Christian Life and cleaner image he also dubbed himself a bad boy gone clean because I'm back this new approach had a mixed reception but still received moderate radio airplane in the next couple of years he was seen spending time and touring with New York's hip-hop group G-Unit mace became a Mainstay of 50 Cent's Public Image during that time appearing with him on magazine covers on stage and in music videos he has since said that working with the group was not something he regrets but that the message he was sending was a mistake he joined the unit to appeal to a different audience so they could see that they could change just as he did thinking that in order to get people where I'm at I have to go back to where I once was in 2006 under the unit mace released a mixtape called crucified for the hood 10 years of hate little is known about the mixtape and after hanging around the G-Unit he once again disappeared from the spotlight his reappearance out of nowhere left on lot of people questioning whether he was coming back to music or was it just a one-time thing since his last album in 2004 Mesa straddled between his career as a rapper and life as one of the Gods chosen in early June 2009 Miss once again reappeared on the scene this time his strategy was to start appearing on RMB artist remixes and tried to re-spark his comeback during an interview May stated that Michael Jackson's death was the thing that influenced him to make a comeback he was featured on the last verse of Uptown Boy by Harry O and Ron browse a week later mace appeared on Street remix for Drake's best I've ever had and on Power 105.1 to discuss his comeback with the prince of New York DJ Saul he used the radio show as his outlet to release new music throughout the rest of the summer with a new song or feature Premiere every Friday on DJ self show he released three songs with his features added to them and on last Friday in July mace release shut down the city which was the second solo release since the scumbag began the song discusses the rapper's Legacy and refers to the waste in which rap as a business has changed since his heading unfortunately it failed better a lot of noise in October 2009 mace made an impromptu appearance on a live radio interview with Diddy Dirty Money on the 103 he told the studio stuff he brought documentation that will release him from the bad boy label and gave the Farms to daddy during the interview they designed the forums and announced Mesa has the freedom to do whatever he wants to do it was later real the forms that not and mesa's contractual obligations to the record label but rather allowed him to appear on songs with others from different labels in 2010 Delhi offered mace a one-year release from Bad Boy to settle all their differences with which mace decided to retire from rap for good over the past 10 years he made a couple of appearances here and there but unfortunately nothing that made his career to pick back up he originally retired from music in 1999 the following steps of God claiming to be unhappy as a rapper and that no money could bring him happiness anymore but after more than 20 years it's more prominent than ever that mace never lost his love and passion for music we can continue usually see him in a battle between his beliefs of becoming one with God spreading the word of joy and making it return to music is this written music and religion are still continuing to this day in 2017 he released a song called The Oracle which was a direct distractor Cameron over the beef which had been going on for years now a couple of years later he was seemingly ready to move forward with his religious relationship and in 2021 mace was announced ahead of the Gathering Oasis Church in Atlanta Georgia not even a year later he did back into music and in 2022 maze became an artist of newly LED Death Row Records and I'm out here to meet with Snoop so I could do another joint venture with Death Row Records mace continues to inspire and spread his message of Hope and Faith to this day while his story features a lot of back and forth between his music The Legend and his inability to make up his mind I think it should serve as evidence of a real transformation life is never linear it's a constant battle between ups and downs and while Hollywood made us all believe in Redemption arcs where 100 success rate this is a true reality of change just like mace we all have the power to change and make a positive impact on the world this is the story of Mace a rapper who Rose to fame and then made the ball decision to turn his back on the industry to try to follow his heart and level life of purpose and meaning [Music] foreign
