when female idols have complete strangers fans colleagues bosses and even the people they consider friends constantly displaying weird behavior towards them i think the real question should be why shouldn't female idols be scared of men there's just too many instances of them being the victim of korean men not respecting their boundaries some of them on screen and probably even more of them off-screen but if we get specific about it here are all the reasons female idols should be terrified of korean men south koreans and consumer of korean entertainment are not exactly strangers to news about gender-based exploitation the traditional gender roles and stereotypes affect women in their everyday lives and female idols are no exception to this especially in an industry that's run and dominated by men this goes from little throwaway jokes about their weight or appearance to the most horrific cases of their careers being ruined and their lives being put at risk just because men feel like they have all the power over them and can do whatever they want with it these problems start ever since these women are young very young no i'm not talking about comments about them going back to the kitchen even though those are issues of their own the problem runs much much deeper k-pop supports the notion that some children were born to serve in the form of entertainment for example most of idols especially those in second generation had to spend about 10 years training before they were allowed to debut and it usually started when they were 10 to 13 years old and sometimes even earlier in addition to the obvious problems with this there's also the very clear issue of exploiting young idols according to the korea times it's not exactly new in the korean entertainment industry for underage trainees to be taken advantage of or to carry out inappropriate acts the korea times said compared to other countries south korea tends to pay less attention to issues related to the commercialization of children some take advantage of this to justify their immoral behavior towards minors we have instances of companies debuting minors and then pushing groups to do provocative or suggestive concepts despite the members ages these were more prominent in second generation groups for example remember when hyuna debuted in wonder girls and her whole image at the time was very adult-like despite her being only 15 years old plus the fact that jyp entertainment put her in the shortest most inappropriate outfits possible for her age and put her on stage to perform in front of an audience of grown men who were old enough to be her father makes my skin crawl i don't even want to imagine what she went through off-screen she did allegedly indirectly talk about her experience in the industry in her song babe on the surface babe is a song about a relationship but if we go just a little bit deeper to analyze the lyrics it's easy to notice the parallels between her significant other in the song and the public and the industry the lyrics reference her doing provocative concepts for basically her entire career but she still has to act like an innocent girl to appeal to the public the hook revolves around needing approval changing against her will and being infantilized unfortunately hina's case isn't the only one in the industry as basically most female idols who were underage at the time went through the same thing there's also the ceos threatening to ruin their careers if the idols don't do what they're told to do i'm not going to explain what that involves because you can probably guess sponsorship or transactional intercourse between ceos or entertainment executives and aspiring idols is part of the industry that doesn't get talked about often enough but is accepted nevertheless these girls enter the industry at such a young age and most of them are separated from their families and friends in order to fully commit their life to being an idol this separation is even more emphasized when their cell phones are confiscated as trainees which further isolates them from information and makes it hard for them to protect themselves from these people female trainees are especially in danger of getting inappropriately exploited experts in a 2012 study by the korean women's development institute reported that female workers were more vulnerable to workplace mistreatment than male counterparts female trainees who often begin their careers at a really young age most of them being in high school when they assign to these companies are the most vulnerable to these people the worst of it is that sponsorships aren't exclusive to the korean entertainment industry not at all in fact everything i'm going to be discussing today is present in every entertainment industry but there are few that come close to the systematic way that the so-called casting couch is present in south korea it's not only present but it's easily available with organizations and clubs dedicating to using low-ranked and rookie celebrities and delivering them to wealthy and important men usually industry executives these men would then sponsor these female idols and rookies giving them designer inexpensive stuff and would help them debut get roles and commercials and there's only one thing that they would ask in return and you probably know what that is the bosses and ceos aren't the only people that female idol should be avoiding in order to stay safe they also should be very wary of their colleagues because of the behavior some male idols have exhibited in the past it's no surprise that the system members advised ioi sohei to be careful of their male seniors they told her be careful of men when you're a rookie male seniors won't leave you alone but not all male seniors are nice people become a hermit just stay home and don't meet up with guys it wasn't the first time senior female idols have exposed these creeps brown eyed girls as jaya said that a lot of grown men including fellow idols had called her when produce 101 was airing to ask her about the contestants jaya revealed i got a lot of calls from men during produce 101 they would just call me out of nowhere and say stuff like i like imnayong there were celebrities among them as well disgusting she went on they would ask me about produce 101 contestants personalities and if they like grown men i have no idea why they would ask me something like that it's not like they have a chance the age gap between the guys and the produce 101 contestants was big too ios taeyeon even shared that other celebrities had tried to make a move on her numerous times she didn't reveal the ages of the idols who asked for her number but i doubt they were the same age these creepy idols weren't exposed but let's talk about those who were yg for example sabotaged his wife's career as an idol just so he could marry her i wish i was kidding but he said so himself the story according to yg himself goes like this yg entertainment's founder and owner young hansuk had a guest appearance on healing camp in 2012. in the show he revealed his relationship with his wife eunzu this is not an unfamiliar name to older k-pop fans because unju used to be an idol herself under yg entertainment yang hyun suk fell in love with her at first sight the second he saw his wife on tv it all happened when e de deen a member of the group's sex cues was giving a house tour for variety show and the camera briefly fell on his little sister e undo yg caught that short glimpse of her and fell in love right away sounds romantic if we don't consider what he did to get her attention also a reminder at that time unju was in her second year of middle school in yg's own words the camera showed her for a brief moment for around i think three seconds i saw this little girl washing dishes and i went huh i don't even think i have the words to describe how disturbing that is coming from a grown man's mouth not only that but yg then met and recruited 16 year old eunju as a yg entertainment trainee a few years later she ended up debuting on a group called sweetie which ended up disbanding in 2004 due to yg not promoting them enough his intentions for this are sinister too he admitted that his lack of support for sweetie was not entirely business related when a fellow cast member suggested that jung hyun suk had not wanted the group to succeed for fear that euntu would become popular he agreed this just made me think of all the groups that failed because ceos developed infatuation with them and didn't want them to succeed because they would get attention what an utterly sickening thing isumantu isn't the person that the female idols under his company turned to for safety and protection no he didn't sabotage one of his groups because he was in love with one of the members but the company and its staff has failed women too many times in 2010 jessica was seen to be wrongfully touched at the 12th annual korea china song festival the moment it happened she moved away from the man immediately as there was nothing she could do at the moment but the whole thing was caught on camera so sm had all the proof in the world to do something to protect her and what did they do instead they made sure that every video of jessica being harassed was removed from the internet there were reports that the man was the vice president of kbs the rumor says that in order to not get into a feud with kbs they had to erase the footage and never talk about it again this went on even with their other groups for example espa during a video of the behind the scenes of a photo shoot a strange man can be seen secretly taking pictures of espa's winter without her knowing again some had the whole thing on video so there was no need to do anything but investigate further they instead released a statement to deny the claims and said that winter enjoyed the photo shoot and although it was captured on camera they denied that he took a picture plus the photographer threatened to sue anyone who would share this information kareena and dj soda were also harassed by the son of a presidential candidate in south korea as he said that he wants to eat karina and touch dj soda dj soda expressed her frustrations on twitter but even after all the emails especially said to sm about taking legal action against him sm hasn't lifted a finger to do something there's also the idols who have made the weirdest and most horrifying remarks about female idols but their careers are still going on strong despite everything when fx's crystal and super junior's ethic were on enjoy together they talked about the first time they met and how youth hook asked crystal to marry him he asked crystal when i without any intentions asked you do you want to get married to me didn't you say yes crystal told him oppa i thought you were scary at the time that's why i answered that way cute story right it could be if crystal wasn't 11 at the time and eath hook wasn't 23 a 12 years age difference crystal also added you told all the oppas in the company that you were going to marry me and you even told one person that we had even kissed yoona also shared a similar story and revealed that ethook had been asking her to marry him in the future when yuna was only 13 and ethup was 20. xindong also revealed on beatles code in 2014 that super junior would call dibs on female idols whenever they would see them on tv i guess these are the men sister were warning solhei about the problems don't stop there unfortunately i want to also bring up the spy cam issue as it is one of the biggest epidemics in korea right now the burning sun scandal itself started to bring a lot of attention to multiple issues within the k-pop industry and the south korean society in general and one of them was spy camps spy cams are usually used to take photographs or videos of the victim and they're distributed without consent the material can be inappropriate but that's not always the case my cam problem in korea has made headlines around the world but the western media mostly focuses on the public bathroom videos and tiny cameras installed in hotel rooms but these are only the tip of the iceberg hidden cameras capture women and sometimes men going to the toilet or even in changing rooms in clothing stores gyms and swimming pools the videos are posted online on pop-up sites if women aren't filmed without consent in motel rooms bathrooms and public transportation they're being filmed by partners and former partners the lake kuhara was a victim of spy cams as she was secretly filmed by her boyfriend and then got filled with the footage in september of 2018 she filed a lawsuit against her ex-boyfriend tae dong boom after he claimed he threatened to damage her career by releasing the video to the public the court agreed that the filming was done without her consent but because she remained in the relationship they found him not guilty of illicit filming both hara and dongbun were appealing against that decision as dongbong continues to deny the charges she also exposed him for physically hurting her after an argument hada had a lunch date with her manager and a male friend but left out the male friend when she told her ex her ex-boyfriend later found out that the male acquaintance was also at lunch and got angry with her for lying to him just three days later he went to her apartment clearly intoxicated and kicked her in order to wake her up they began arguing and things turned bad when the ex-boyfriend grabbed her hair and threw her around the injuries described in the doctor's note made me honestly so sad about what she had been through the reality of what korean women go through is really dark in general according to a study conducted by the korean institute of criminology 1 593 out of 2 000 south korean men or 79.7 said that they had physically girlfriend during the dating period how is this normalized like tell me how is that okay along with spy cams female k-pop idols have also fallen prey to digital manipulation with their images being edited into inappropriate photos and videos they're called deep fakes and just last year momoland's nancy's face was edited into the photos of a woman undressing it wasn't the first time it has happened as inappropriate deep fakes of other female idols had thousands of retweets and likes on twitter just disgusting these people should be locked up and never see the light of day again and don't even get me started on chat rooms we all know about the burning sun scandal it was a major scandal that exposed the darkest sides of the industry for all the world to see it also came amid a wave of other related scandals in south korea which sparked new controversies about how women are being exploited in the country the scandal also exposed the male idols who were involved in the most horrific acts that took place inside the burning sun nightclub mind you these are the men who were around female idols and trainees all the time female idols might have gotten an inkling about them but i doubt anybody knew just how evil they were to the full extent all the illegal activities in the burning sun were done through private chat rooms a report that was done when the whole scandal was unfolding revealed that the sharing of explicit videos illegally filmed with spy cams were done via a chat room with sumrit zhengthuyang and ft island tue jonghyun and several other acquaintances the illegal content shared also included images of unconscious and intoxicated females and the members of the chat rooms discussed harming them there's also the issue of a golden phone that not only contained these videos but also the contacts of numerous women which were given out to others without their consent tong joon young was revealed to have shared multiple videos encounters in a group chat with other celebrities police said he recorded at least 10 women between 2015 and 2016 without their consent he had previously been arrested on a similar charge involving an ex-girlfriend in 2016. now my question is why didn't the police ensure that nothing like this ever happens again i swear most of these cases go unnoticed because the police are so incompetent at their own jobs or so corrupt that they are able to turn a blind eye to such horrific things they belong in jail along with everyone included in the scandal but this isn't all investigations uncovered further controversies involving other celebrities highlight says toon hyung delivered a witness interview for allegations that jongdun yang had filmed and shared illegal footage without the lady's consent despite his awareness of john junyoung's actions he didn't report the latter to authorities which made him just as guilty there's also the nth room scandal which is by far the most disgusting thing i've ever heard about the nth room is a mass digital crime case happening in south korea these crimes are carried out through the message application telegram which is known for its super cyber security to the point that these conversations are untraceable to anyone outside the conversation thus ensuring privacy for its users while these security measures were probably created with the best intention in mind for its users operator of the chat room with the screen name doctor had successfully found a way around this safety mechanic by using it to sell videos of women he created numerous closed chat rooms with different ranks and prices ranging from one hundred thousand won to one million five hundred thousand won this is where the name nth room comes from these different ranks show different types of content meaning higher paying patrons can request and view more extreme acts the number of patrons who visit the nth rooms increases every day and currently there is an estimate of at least 260 000 members in these rooms if the chat room had 10 members it would still be a lot but 260 thousand i have no words the real shocking reveal to the public came after the arrest of the doctor the doctor was arrested in march of 2020 and his identity was revealed as to bean he was revealed to the public as the main operator of the chat room in the days following his arrest toto bean revealed that some female idols and actresses were victims of the nth room along with the fact that some male celebrities and athletes have participated in viewing and requesting content in these rooms since then 128 suspects were arrested with 18 of them being in confinement there was also a petition that was demanding that the police reveal the identities of all the suspects as well as the estimated 260 000 members in the chat room so this means that people have no idea who the people that took part in these chat rooms are women could be friends with them dating them or having them as role models yet they don't know the kind of people they are it's truly disturbing and even sadder that the women won't get justice anytime soon because of the police slacking off and despite the arrest of the doctor the nth room continues to grow with each passing day society needs to search for ways to make it easier for victims to find justice and for the offenders to be brought to justice fellow idols and industry executives should also be held accountable whenever they say or do questionable things to their female colleagues and try to pass it off as jokes as for fans and netizens the victims supporting alleged criminals just because their celebrity that they like and dismissing the seriousness of these situations in general just makes it more difficult for justice to be served to the victims and as for the men in the industry who have silently watched what's happening they are collaborators in a system that makes it so easy for such crimes to be committed and for these perpetrators to get out of it without as much as a scratch tell me your thoughts in the comments about this terrifying topic thanks for watching and i'll talk to you soon bye
