where many may think this race is a race for hosting a state record 15 gold balls this race focuses on the team not only facing difficult challenges on the court but off the court also this season is no different for the mealwood falcons boys basketball team led by head coach mike jeffries way more patient you know what i'm saying when we run these glaze sometimes it gets busted this team is a unique team led by captain and two sports star ricky hunt in the nationally ranked freshman phenom jaden nickins however it's the core players of william mays crayland liberty kobe law jaden dillard and the team's muscle carlos strong that has his team flying high on all cylinders this year millwood public schools is located on the east side of oklahoma city however with a tradition of state titles this school's tradition stretches more than 10 miles of his community millwood has produced many professional athletes whether it's being mlb all-star joe carter [Applause] [Applause] first round nfl draft pick rashaan woods super bowl champions joy mickey and donovan woods or olympic gold medalist gil roberts one thing that all these players have in common is the fact they were coached by head coach vero franklin aka chop who coached millwood for 45 years and led his boys teams to 15 state championships yeah my name is vero franklin and i've been working in millwood i worked at millwood for some 45 years this i tell you what um it goes throughout the year we played in the toughest conference in the state of oklahoma uh probably more state championships in the all-city conference back in the day than any other conference other than maybe greene county where booker t watson and those teams are we lost some we won some big games we played the best in the state of oklahoma and we took that as learning time to prepare for this and then once we get here it was on this is what we work for getting to the big house they call it the big house now they i i hear that there's some problems with that now because it relates to slavery and and people were complaining about it but we never call it the big house we always always called it our house we ended up being very very successful to the point that i think we're one of the top three schools with the with the most state championships in the history of the state of oklahoma a lot of history there we had the highest winning percentage in the state tournament for a long time 80-something percent yes mike jeffries is an excellent coach when he came in i thought that he was the answer to uh uh to to pick up the transition because i know for some people it can be a problem trying to follow you know oh yeah uh can you say if you had anything to say uh to the kids this group of kids what would you say stay focused stay humble because you go into that big house and you got the big arena and the shooting thing is a little different you know can you go put it on the glass can you make your free throws and can you play defense yeah the thing is is give great effort play as a team play for each other be disciplined and and and pray shannon hayes director of operations for middleware public schools this is my completion of my 21st year here i started out as a teacher and a coach and now i'm director of operations and i think this team has worked through a lot they have been able to to finally find their niches their personality i think coach jeffries has found a great rotation between his substitutions and knowing what what what personnel needs to be in and what different situations it's taking some time i mean it it it's it's not a it's not a quick you know quick thing it's a journey and it takes a long long journey but uh i just want to say hey go go finish what you started you know and and i think that's what they're doing [Music] nothing fancy they can shoot no left hand push them on that left hand like we always do disrupt their whole offense like i said yesterday we talked about these sets they couldn't run like one set dude because y'all defense man cause y'all's defense so if i'm digging on you i want him to be able to throw it back oh [Music] they're here too right don't
