[Music] the queen and prince philip's children gave a series of touching remarks during a moving interview to pay tribute to their dear father who has passed away at windsor castle on friday prince philip has been widely praised for the steadfast support and guidance he gave the queen throughout their married life philip was the queen's strength and guide throughout their 73-year marriage and her 69-year reign and there was an outpouring of grief across the country and throughout the world after the passing of the duke in a bbc documentary on friday philip's eldest son prince charles 72 led his siblings as they remembered their father in the interview recorded for broadcast after the passing of philip the heir to the throne said his father didn't suffer fools gladly and would probably want to be remembered as an individual in his own right his energy was astonishing to support my mama and doing it in such a long time charles said what he's done amounts to an astonishing achievement i think phillip was born into the greek and danish royal families on a kitchen table on the island of corfu but went into exile with his family at just 18 months of age the family fled to france where his parents would later separate his mother alice suffered a mental breakdown and his father went to monte carlo leaving philip to eventually attend school in scotland it can't have been easy and life was uncertain and everyone had to rely on other people to help and presumably he had to fall back on himself quite a lot charles said charles recalled a story where philip sailing mother who later became a nun told her son she wanted to be buried in jerusalem next to her aunt elizabeth the grand duchess of russia who was canonized as a russian orthodox saint my father said to her but hang on a minute how are we going to visit your grave charles recounted and she said don't be silly there's a very good bus service from athens she was that sort of person and you could see where my father got the directness philip's youngest son prince andrew 61 said like any other family at the time your parents went out to work on the day but in the evening just the same as any other family we would get together we would sit on the sofa as a group and he would read to us philip's only daughter princess anne said he treated everybody as an individual and gave them respect that he felt they were due as individuals as you grew older there was a lot of talking to you about the things he had done so he became aware of what else was going on and the things he'd been doing but there was a huge amount of encouragement to do things and quite a lot of leeway of pushing your own boundaries which is probably not given to many nowadays i have to say i think i will best remember him as always being there and a person who can bounce off ideas but if you're having problems you could always go to him and know that he would listen and try to help prince edward said my father was always a great source of support and encouragement and guidance all the way through and never trying to curtail any of the activities or anything that we wanted to try and do but always encourage that i will always remember and thank him for that both princess anne and prince edward also gave a separate interview on itv recorded before philip's death to be aired afterwards without him life will be completely different the princess royal said in the interview with royal reporter chris shipp the late duke's daughter went on to discuss philip's lasting legacy and how even though he was very conscious about technology and its process he never failed to recognize it was the people who were the most important from society's perspective he was able to keep pace with the kind of technological changes that have such an impact but above all that it's not about the technology it's about the people she said and also reflected on how her father found ways in which he could make an impact as the longest serving consort after serving in world war ii he married elizabeth in 1947 at which time he stepped away from his military career i'm absolutely sure that it was not an easy decision but it shows a real understanding of the pressures that the queen was going through and that the best way he could support her was by giving up his career she recalled adding that he was shaped in the royal navy by the desire to make do and mend and change and improve yet one of philip's most memorable moments in the public eye came years later at princess diana's funeral philip walked with prince harry and prince william in the funeral procession where he was seen patting his younger grandson on the shoulder in a tender moment anne described how their famous walk came to be saying memory is a strange thing isn't it but i seem to remember him saying in fact it was a question of if you all do it i'll do it and that was him as a grandfather saying if you want me to be there if that's what you want if that's what you want to do if you want me to be there i will be there in another scene edward shared his belief as to why his parents marriage remains so strong over their 73 years together my parents have been such a fantastic support to each other during all those years and all those events and all those tours as well as all the events overseas edward said to have someone that you can confide in and smile about some things that you couldn't perhaps smile about in public is very very important to be able to share that with somebody is immensely important the earl of wessex continued i remember my father in a number of different ways both in what he's done in his public life and all the organizations that he supported and influenced obviously as my father and husband to my mother all the work that is done there as a family will probably always remember that more than anything else in terms of their father-son relationship he said i probably remember him as any son hopefully remembers their father as someone who was always there who was always encouraging but actually never pushing so i'm sure along the way i've probably disappointed him in some ways but i hope in other ways surprised him since he spent a lot of time at boarding school many of edward's treasured family memories together were during holidays both my parents always were fantastic about giving that time during those holidays he explained despite the lives they both led they were able to really make the holidays very special though edward believes his father was unfairly depicted in the media he personally will always remember philip for his love of cricket and carriage driving which was a large part of his life edward also pointed to his fantastic sense of humor it was always this humor that came through the twinkle in his eye princess anne continued about her father's nomadic childhood settling in paris as a child after being smuggled out of the greek island of corfu in a crate being much younger than his sisters largely separated from his father and his mother's mental health troubles and said it must have been really quite difficult he was virtually a refugee at this stage because he had nowhere else to go literally she said adding that eventually attending the golden stone school in morre scotland made an impact on him as much as prince philip valued his time at the boarding school the only daughter of prince philip and queen elizabeth added that her father valued life experience in addition to academic learning he believed there were things outside of school which were necessary to help you develop as an individual which played to your strengths and if that wasn't academic there were other things that would be your strength she said the duke of edinburgh award a self-improvement program for young people aged 14 to 24 remains part of prince philip's legacy the initiative has expanded to 144 countries the duke of edinburgh award is probably among the best known of the foundations in his name and initially started by his former headmaster kurt harhan who when it was rolled out beyond gordenstein came to my father and said would you get involved in this prince edward said my father got lord hunt involved in helping to shape how it would roll out and that was of course one of his geniuses being able to find the right people to take things on and shape them the youngest child of the queen and prince philip continued the fact it has now spread to more than 140 countries way beyond the commonwealth way beyond the english-speaking world is enormous testament to that original vision prince philip passed away peacefully on friday morning just weeks after he was released from hospital and reunited with queen elizabeth and just two months before his 100th birthday he spent his final days at windsor castle with his wife who he lovingly called lillybet the royal family said in a statement it was with deep sorrow that her majesty the queen announces the death of her beloved husband his royal highness the prince philip duke of edinburgh his royal highness passed away peacefully this morning at windsor castle further announcements will be made in due course the royal family joined with people around the world in mourning his loss funeral plans for prince philip have been set in motion as queen elizabeth enters an eight day period of mourning the 94 year old monarch will refrain from carrying out any royal duties during this time affairs of state will also be put on pause you
