Smash Bros melee ain't a balanced game people believe there's only a handful of tournament viable characters when you get to here it just becomes hard but just because they aren't as strong doesn't mean they don't have potential they can be bought out by the right player so today I'm going to tell you the story that every mid and low tier main fears get it Myers the story of when the best Luigi in the world entered the only tournament he would ever enter never to be seen again of the funny men in melee Luigi is probably sitting at the head of the table random kill moves a move that you have to charge that sometimes is charged based on poor or opposing character the slightiest man alive the list goes on unfortunately he's not the most practical his low AirSpeed and full speed means his only real way of approaching is from the ground making him easy to exploit by certain characters while they're and abusable in the air by others this as well as a very weak recovery is enough weakness to put his strong combo game and ground move movement in the shadow and place them solidly in the mid tier of characters for those unaware the mid-tier of melee's cast is where people stop believing you could win a tournament even the tier above is questionable and takes some very talented players to be able to pull it off and I have no idea what she's doing so unfortunately for Luigi he sits in the same tier as his brother his brother is a doctor and the king of all evil weird family this doesn't mean that people don't try to play and do well with the character though in fact there are four players with Luigi as a main or secondary in the top 100 which is a lot even when compared with some higher tier characters but not when compared to others in fact in history there's even a Luigi who cracked the top 40 a bait a crowd favorite player in his time for sure even having that insane run of the big house in 2015 where he got seventh which is actually the highest placing a Luigi has ever got at a super major however a bait would not compete as much in the following years and slowly drop down the rankings it seemed like Luigi had hit his Peak however in 2017 there was a tournament where one player would Shake Up the World As We Know It by showing off what might be the greatest Luigi we have ever seen and he didn't even mean the character plop is a staple in melee a young Samus name from Florida turned into a blisteringly fast Sheik who in 2017 was all the hype Rock Club with him looking like someone outside of leffen who can challenge the gods for the wins and while he has many accolades to his name today that's not what we're here for you see whether it was one of the many streams of muticking or if he was always this way ploppers wanted to dabble in a lot of characters even when he switched from Samus it still came out from time to time and in the past year he had showed that his Fox was a force to be reckoned with this character experimentation also extended to his stream and at some point he took a special liking to Luigi so much so that pluck proposed to his fans if he got 1 000 retweets on this tweet he would go oh Luigi the next tournament and well at Sandstone Club will go all Luigi at CEO Dreamland which by the way wasn't exactly a small tournament it had Beauty King and hungrybox in attendance as well as a lot of the top 30 in that year this wouldn't deter him however he's used to playing new characters in big environments and this would be no different to just another day at the office now before this we had seen other top player tertiary character runs and I mean they never really end pretty some go above and beyond but I mean those are the ones that get videos made out of them they're so rare so how would plop perform at CEO Dreamland did did that just give away how this goes of pools are into top 48 club would need to be Ginger and while he wasn't the ginger that we know now he was still a highly ranked player who also played Falco one of Luigi's harder matchups to deal with I wouldn't say that this set looked impressive Club looked like he was certainly competent with Luigi but it was definitely his pure melee fundamentals carrying him through this set even the commentators clearly have low expectations for clubs Luigi this event papers he's not joking I always think he's joking but he's clearly not joking oh I think he's 100 just messing around 200 however thanks to some lovely freebies from Ginger club would pretty cleanly make his way to top 48 on Winner's side his first match here would be Nintendo an Ice Climbers player oh and it's 2017 so don't forget wobbling is legal now if there's one thing I know about playing tertiary characters is that a wobbling Ice Climbers is one of the scariest to go against as you won't really have full understanding of your character's Shield pressure like what's safe and what's not however Luigi is actually pretty good versus Ice Climbers his Aerials are extremely hard to grab and his down smash has great pushback on Shield so we can't really be punished by them he also just beats them in speed on the ground which is where they are best not only did plump know this he was able to use these aspects of Luigi to the fullest as well as mixing in his great knowledge of platform movement probably transferring over from his sheep he strolled on the flat the stages without the platforms but with them he looked Unstoppable and took the set over Nintendo 3-2 guaranteeing him top 16 which is pretty decent but considering his wins I don't think anyone would have given him too much credit if it ended there now would they so who was up next for the funny Green Man then well none other than drug Fox but now a very well regarded coach at the time a very strong player I think most people expected the Luigi's run to end here but you know what they say okay I can't do it I got it plop comes out the gates swinging showing lots of strange and tricky Mix-Ups to box out the fox some of the strangest yet smartests I've seen from a Luigi he also manages to live a lot of off-stage situations by utilizing Luigi's air Dodge but most importantly his Tech Chase game from his Chic transferred over extremely well as his combo game on the fox showed to be incredible and he takes game one in an insane stock and also nearly takes game two but dreadfox seems to be pulling it back in Fountain starts off well but drofox seems to have a gauge on the Luigi now and is pulling ahead he has them off stage for Edge guard to put him onto the last stock but what is blessed by the Luigi Lords and gets a misfire to reverse the situation ending up with him playing out the game game four it seems all even in fact I would have even given the momentum to drugfox but sometimes it only takes one thing to switch that momentum Club once again blessed by the funny man gets the funny stage and gets a huge swing in percent which he would carry all the way to the end of the game plop beats drug Fox and moves on to top eight where he faces Mewtwo King now this is where the buck stops it's Beauty King one of the five gods of the game no way plus Luigi is going to hold out against m2k I mean well I guess we've got to sit on our hands and while game two was a bit of a wash we did get to see whatever the this sequence was but game free plop once again Comes Out Swinging only to unfortunately get shut down by them off game four the funny man strikes in freeze but unfortunately the king's mouth is just too strong however Club kept it very competitive the whole time his time Mix-Ups to get around Master wall were really impressive if you had a bit more knowledge on the combo game who knows where this set might have ended the main takeaway from this set was how plugs Luigi actually looked like it could win even against one of the five Gods Club would fall into loser semis where he's at least guaranteed Fifth and he has to play against Swedish Delight a top 20 Chic player normally this would seem hopeless Sheik does destroy the mid-tiers after all but after what we just saw no one knew what might happen well after game one I unfortunately think a lot of people's hopes were dashed the Sheik looked clean and plop didn't really ever get the wind in his sails Swedish was so confident in fact he went for the Luigi ditto and actually took the game but plup did not want to be called a fraud by this man's Luigi and he struck back with a vengeance and a shoryokun to take the free stuff in fear of this now angered funny man Swedish switches back to Chic this is a different game now though plus strikes down the first stock and actually has control after a clean Edge guard suddenly Swedish is on the verge of a reverse 3-0 well clubs Luigi take another top 20 win in one event [Music] thank you [Music] [Music] unfortunately the funny man and plus run ended here at fifth out of 333 attendees I remember watching this tournament and even though as Fat Beat hbox and Mewtwo King nearly winning the whole thing all anyone talked about was plop's wild Luigi Run the best Luigi in the world doesn't even mean him people would say this is honestly something I feel every mid-tier mean fears yet is excited by I feel on one side you see that your character has real potential to do well and yet on the other you realize just how important fundamentals are and that maybe the best way to be the best at your character would be to play a different one and come back later but at that point what is the point a strange conflict I can imagine I would also be remiss to not talk about the advantages plop has with Luigi being his secondary a lot of top level at anything is mental and while playing a character you are clearly just having fun with he has no pressure on him no expectations to do well therefore he won't really be affected by tilt you can see the whole event he's just laughing and having fun while his opponents are getting frustrated at even being challenged by this funny Green Man on the screen and this Advantage is very much real I mean just look at the Stark difference between plop getting wobbled normally versus when he's playing Luigi no one could say with accuracy just how good he would be if he was a Luigi Mane but still he should incredibly unique gameplay which I am sure Luigi means probably still look at to this day this was the best Luigi player in the world on that day and yet he was never to be seen again foreign
