The Pros and Cons of Insomniac's Venom - Marvel's Spider-Man 2

19 in of Venom 19 in that is what we were promised by Insomniac Games prior to the release of Marvel Spider-Man 2 but to some we merely got 10 in of Venom 9 in off this is blasphemy to many okay weird metaphors aside Venom to some this is the best version of Venom but to others this is the worst and you might be confused yourself oh is this Venom that bad in this game or why do so many people like this version of there's too many problems well here I am to explain to you why some people love this Venom and why some outright despise him this is technically my opinion but objectively speaking this venom has a lot of Pros but also a lot of cons Oh and before I begin no Harry being Venom is not one of those cons I'm not going to wh that Venom not being Eddie is bad in fact I'll explain why it's probably for the better so enough stalling like And subscribe please it helps out a lot we're so close to 1 th000 subscribers let's start out with uh let's start on with the obvious this is the best Venom design adaptation we've gotten in a while I like that the spider is much bigger with the top legs going over the shoulders and I also like the goopy symbiot bits that were also on Peter symbiot suit oh and the way the jaw practically unhinges sometimes looks terrifying in comparison to other Venom designs it's got a lot going for it here the toefer Grace Venom is just an uglier version of the bully McGuire suit and he's just like an inch taller might as well call him Spider-Man with the jaw as for the other popular version of Venom Tom Hardy's Venom well it's a good design but there's no spider and it just looks really plain because it's the spider not being there it's just practically a silhouette the white veiny line things are very uh faded they're barely there and it just doesn't look like great I mean it looks okay but it could look a lot better if they give it with the spider and don't get it twisted I don't hate this design of Venom I like the design I like the CGI I just wish there was more going for it back to what I was saying the Insomniac version of venom does a lot of things that I want to see more of it looks like a much more Savage version of Peter's black costume and it also makes him look bigger than Peter showing how he's a deadly opposite to Spidey yeah not much else to say about this look for Venom moving on a major complaint that people can't let go of is that Eddie isn't Venom which always rubs me the wrong away when people whine about it Venom can work without Eddie and plus Eddie being in the game would have felt shoehorned in no matter how badly people wanted him the past two games have shown Harry in minimal detail with the Symbio but at least they shown him right plus even if you don't do his research labs in the story devil's breath was created to cure Harry from a disease which killed his mother but dook stole it and you know what nuts so already despite having a minimal speaking role Harry is an established character in this universe Miles Morales didn't feature much of him outside of the post credit scene but Peter was a minor character in that game anyway still there was buildup to Harry being Venom by teasing the simu as another cure for his disease so why on Earth would Insomniac introduce Eddie randomly just so he could be Venom the point is Harry being Venom makes perfect sense for the game as do his motivations early on later on though they they get a really muddled but we'll get to that later another Pro is that the emotional Stakes with Peter are on par with Peter and do o from the first game it's not as good but it's definitely up there watching Harry and Peter slowly drift apart because of the Symbio was exciting to watch and seeing Harry's anger at Peter's betrayal of their dream hurt him so much was captivating and Yuri lenth's performance as Peter is beautiful seeing him so reluctant to kill Venom despite being told that's the only way it's a bit tropy and cliche sure but I still enjoy it nonetheless Venom's gameplay in his mission don't be scared was also really fun and surprising everyone hoped that Venom would be playable in some way in this game similar to the Ultimate Spider-Man game and Insomniac delivered as if making it a back door to a Venom game I definitely enjoy this section as I felt very chaotic which is how Venom should feel chaotic and unpredictable plus having him fight Craven was such a good choice from a gameplay perspective and I am genuinely surprised that they got away with the blood they showed when craen died although story-wise this whole thing was kind of meaningless and jumbled up but we'll get back to that as well also I really loved when he grew the king of black wings out of nowhere despite how you know like random they were that was kind of badass for my final Pro let me just say that Tony Todd is the perfect casting choice for Venom I loved him as zoom in The Flash and I love him as Venom absolute Peak never forget I am the fastest man alive we now before I move on I will say that I seem to have more cons than Pros take that how you will because I personally love this version of Venom so I'm not exactly sure what this means anyways let's get into [Music] the there is one massive con that I have that connects to every other con and pretty much every issue I have with the game in general Spider-Man 2 can sometimes feel rushed not like the Owl House rushed where if you ask me it didn't really click like the prior season did although they did what they could with what they had why am I talking about the owl house it's more like Halo 2 rushed if you didn't know Halo 2 had the most hectic development of any bungee produced Halo title it's a miracle it made it out in a good condition but much of the game's original Vision was cut with much of it going into Halo 3 I feel like something similar happened to Spider-Man 2 the devs were probably told to make the game the same length as the first game for whatever reason and they got a little ambitious I think they might have wanted to keep the Symbio story lines in one game rather than continue them into the third game plus whatever DLC they might add whatever the case the third Act is a mess in the first game there are also three acts as is usually the case in any story The First Act introduces the characters and establishes their back stories and stuff while also giving the player key features it also introduces the demons a gang with strange powers that shows up not long after the fall of Fisk Act One ends with Jefferson Davis Miles his dad dying in the city hall bombing where Martin Lee is also revealed to be behind the demons two has you defeat Lee but later on you have to deal with a raft breakout where the Sinister Six assembles with doog at the head and this transitions into act three finally act three has you beat the six stop devil's breath and confront your Mentor turn villain pretty cohesive story with each Act having its own time to shine however Spider-Man 2 has Craven as the main enemy for the first two acts and then proceeds to shoehorn Venom in in the rushed final act the transition to act three is also very messy it ends ends with Venom's don't be scared mission where he kills Craven and then decides to heal the world yeah then somehow he starts to turn people into symbiot which isn't really explained how does he have this power when has he ever could someone please tell me if he's ever done this in the comic cuz I'm genuinely curious also Craven dying doesn't really change much or affect the story despite him being so significant and arguably the best version of Craven his Hunters just disappear aside from the hunter bases and his death is just glossed over it would have been much cooler if Craven stayed alive in act three and he didn't die until later where would have had much more impact and buildup the difference between Craven and Mr negative as villains cuz I know they're probably going to be compared is that Craven is the major antagonist for most of the game while negative is a smaller antagonist to that of Doc O appearing in all three acts but only ever in a major role in Act 2 you might be thinking to yourself oh but Harry appears a lot in the game and that's the problem that's the one thing people don't get right and what writers often don't get right the problem with Venom as a character is he two characters which brings me to my next con Harry's motives while vague at least exist in a somewhat coherent way he wants Peter by his side as he heals the world whatever that means but the problem with Venom the Symbiote isn't that he's a monster like everyone thinks because it's not comic accurate that's not the issue which I'll explain in a sec no the issue is he's a monster with no personality none zip NADA zero just cliche world domination for no reason why no really why that's almost never been Venom's goal in his long history his target has always been Spider-Man and only Spider-Man just look at spectacular Spider-Man's version of Venom his entire purpose was to pull a reverse flash and go it was me Peter if effectively doing everything he can to ruin his life this was both Eddie and Venom not just one or the other both Venom hated Peter for abandoning him and Eddie's friendship with Peter was completely ruined over time which is very similar to the dynamic in this game but here it only seems like on surface level Harry is the one who wants revenge and wants to prove Peter wrong my biggest issue with this is that the only way to know why Venom bonded to Harry or at least have some clue is to look for context clues don't get me wrong I like subtle writing but mostly when it's used for World building here it feels like they do either just didn't have time to explain it or didn't feel like explaining it if Venom's goal was to destroy Peter's life that would make more sense and it would probably tie into him turning MJ into scream but it just doesn't make any sense it doesn't fit and you're probably still wondering what I meant by him being a monster not being comic accurate and why that's not necessarily a bad thing let me explain a common thing that people don't realize is that Venom at heart has always been a bit of a goofball however a common misconception by most people because they're I don't know stupid is that Venom can't be both Goofy and Savage at the same time this is completely wrong I think the PS1 neversoft game captured this well Venom is Goofy yes but he's also serious and monstrous when he needs to be this makes him badass if any of you tight wearing freaks out there want to save Little Miss fashion model then bring it on surf the web surf the web shut up Brock we don't have time in the Venom movies it's different but Venom is Goofy while still being violent Insanity the worst example though would by far be Spider-Man 3 where venom has no motivation but instead it's all Edie yet another example of why Studio executive shouldn't interfere with director's Vision another bad example is web of Shadows Venom look I know this game has its fans who think it's the best thing in the world and hate whenever I diss it because they can't realize I can dislike something but Venom is not a good character in that game and the reasons are exactly the same as to why this Venom is flawed venom has no real reason to just randomly take over New York no reason at all and then he kills himself at the end of the game for some reason yeah here come the comments about why I can't mention this game's FL tell me honestly Venom If Venom has ever actually turn people into symbiotes outside of this game in Spider-Man 2 I've literally never seen him have this ability to be fair though a lot of act three does feel rushed after Peter loses the black suit and Venom does his thing the pacing immediately loses control spiles out all over the place and just doesn't feel coherent it feels jumbled up while also feeling way too spread out what does Heal the World mean if if it was said to mean like using the power of the meteorite to split Venom into mult if it was said to mean like using the power of the meteorite to split Venom into multiple symbiotes effectively stopping disease across the planet that would make sense that no one would suffer what he suffered or what his mom suffered but Insomniac barely focuses on Venom opting to focus on what he's done offscreen you can't tell me it doesn't seem like they wanted to do a lot more to just reference Web of Shadows by turning the city into a symbiote infestation but once again we know next to nothing about Venom or the meteorite he's so obsessed with it would make sense if Venom wanted Peter by his side because then together they could prevent another devil's breath crisis happening and they could save everyone at once but instead it's just world domination Do's whole thing was about bringing everything Norman cared about down with him in hell it was never about taking over the world it was all about Norman just as Venom his whole motivation should be about Peter it should revolve around Peter because that's at heart what venom has been in most continuities okay I think I've made my point by now tldr the Venom symbiote needed more personality especially when you consider the fact that according to Tony Todd only about 10% of his dialogue was used for Venom either they're saving it for something else or they ran out of time it's probably a little bit of both one smaller con that could be just viewed as a nitpick is the boss fight with Venom the markting in trailers implied that both Peter and Miles were going to fight Venom around the city but instead it's relegated to two short areas with Peter and Miles fighting Venom in one each imagine if you had to chase Venom at some points while sometimes he trashes you forcing you into a fight after the fight you switch to the other Spider-Man whichever one it is the other supports you in the fight this would be such a sick Concept in my eyes the boss fight itself Falls flat after they leave Bown high or at least for me so basically pretty much all my cons aside from maybe one or two come from a story perspective and all tied to one con the final third of the game with Venom feels hastily put together I love pretty much everything else about Venom don't get me wrong and I do like the black suit Arc with Peter but this is focusing on the actual Venom character rather than just a symbiote and I genuinely don't know what Heal the World means someone please tell me in the comments if you can make sense of it so what's my ultimate opinion on Venom see what I see what I did there well while I have my gripes with him I don't hate him as much as most people seem to however I don't think he's the best version of Venom by far and not because he's not fully comic accurate that's never been a massive issue for me except in some cases if you want a comic accurate Eddie Brock Venom in the modern day try midnight Suns to take like the PS1 version he says stuff like this BL kidding little joke uh I I come in peace but also does stuff like this we will rip your face off and suck the Barrow from your B oh and obviously it's edit so I know some people are going to prefer this Venom over insomniacs anyways I'm kind of indifferent to this Venom I don't hate him but I don't fully love him yet in the future if the Venom symbiote returns which it definitely could I think Insomniac needs to develop the Symbiote more in terms of personality and hopefully that's what a Venom game can do I don't really mind whether or not the host is Harry or if it becomes Eddie or someone else because all I care about is getting good character development right now the Symbio feels very one note but I trust inia to improve story-wise later on and with that this video comes to a close thank you all so much for watching please
