from the streets of salva dj mixes in niger all the way to the top in germany france and austria everywhere you go you're sure to have heard the mega hit that is jerusalem by south african musicians master kg and nom tebos gorde the south african house and gospel fusion song was released in the midst of one of the country's biggest years in music 2019 brought us hits such as umlilo by dj zinje muzzle and ritabile ending our way by sana and the afro brothers with heavy headers like these one may wonder what had this particular song become the international sensation it is today my name is nazi and today we're going to be looking at the power of jerusalema hit the track [Music] there are a number of intertrining factors at play which give jerusalem its charm one of which is the song subject matter salemma is the zulu variant of the name of the middle eastern city jerusalem the song's lyrics penned by nontribo speak of the capital city of israel directly as home referencing its significance to christianity as the holy city where god [Music] resided [Music] when interpreted the lyrics mean jerusalem my home guard me walk with me do not leave me here the second verse [Music] [Applause] [Music] um my place is not here i have no place here my kingdom is nowhere near guard me walk with me the chorus accentuates this plea and [Music] bursts 86 of south africans and 29 of the global population believing in christianity according to index mundi and adherents respectively known double's words and message from the onset have the potential to resonate in many homes across the country and throughout the world the song however is not just a sweet gospel tune apart from the message in the music another reason the song inspired the world to burst out their best moves is master keiji's composition and production like any beat maker and producer master keiji is avoided the luxury of being crypt with a variety of various different instruments he can combine as he sees fit kg's particular sound which one can refer to as limpopo house unique to his home province of limpopo blends together the elements of the greater south african house music genre in his rhythm section with his use of harmonies often being carried by orchestral instruments such as violins and cellos from a string section and a trumpet playing diatonic chords and melodies the percussive elements in the rhythm section include an 808 kick high hats hand claps distinctly south african vocal ad-libs and a low bass line the song is in the key of c-sharp major and features the chords 1 6 4 5 known as the 50s progression as the aforementioned name implies this chord progression was used heavily in 50s and early 60s western popular music featuring in songs throughout the years such as stand by me by ben e king beautiful girls by sean kingston and me by taylor swift featuring brandon yuri with a catchy hook relatable message and creative orchestration it's no wonder jerusalem became an instant hit upon initial release and grew into the viral juggernaut it is today going on to spawn numerous covers global dance challenges and a remix with grammy-nominated nigerian artist berna boy in the end i believe the one constant factor about the song the reason behind this meteoric success the reason it got to the world dancing the power of jerusalem isn't just the song itself or the clever use of familiar instruments it is the meaning in the music it is the meaning people find in the music see if there's anything that i've seen personally it's music is identity music can form part of an identity and music can be one's identity to mustachey and non-terminus the song is an expression of their hopes within their faith it is a plea for guidance and protection with the faith that it shall come it is a prayer on a dim day for a bright tomorrow it is the message for anyone who hears it knowing that whatever has them feeling lost and afraid that this tube shall pass there is a light that will guide you home thank you so very much for watching if it is you like what you saw please make sure that you like comment share and subscribe so you can keep this channel alive i'm super excited
