The Potato Chip Theme Park & Cú Chulainn - Ireland's Only Rollercoaster | Expedition Theme Park

Ireland is full of beauty from the cliffs of mower to the city of Dublin what it is not full of though it's rollercoasters the country has only one major theme park with an American theme built by potato chip company tater which is home to Ireland's only major roller coaster the longest wooden roller coaster in Europe with an inversion except it doesn't even have an inversion just be sure not to tell mr. tato that [Music] [Music] [Music] for the first time on expedition theme-park this expedition is going to start with a little history of crisps tato crisps are a national institution in ireland and was the first ever season potato chip in the world tato crisps that whispers crisps that whisper tito crisps that whisper freshness crisps that whisper crispness look for the special pack tato ah terrific the original tato crisps factory was founded in 1954 in Dublin the company pioneered the technology of seasoning crisps during the manufacturing process which had other companies around the world rush in to copy the three original flavors were cheese an onion salt and vinegar and smoky bacon the crisps name was inspired by founder Joe Murphy's son because that is how he used to pronounce potato over the years the crisps company began to grow and grow and heavily used its hat-wearing potato mascot mr. tato to become a nationwide brand [Music] the brand was so huge that many parts of Ireland began referring to crisps simply as tattoes mr. tato also became an icon over the years in 2007 the company advertised mr. tato as a supposed candidate in the irish general election two years later he had a fictional autobiography it is a story so powerful no matter what you have read the encrypted story of one man's journey from the tipping fields to become the nation's top potato and in 2010 tato would open Ireland's only bean park tato park [Music] jeido Park not sir couch potatoes there have been multiple plans over the years to open a theme park near Dublin in 1997 plans were drawn up for a park similar to Alton Towers which was hoping to open within the next six years operated by the k9 carnival company in North Dublin the attraction wanted to bring in a million visitors a year cost 70 million Irish pounds to complete and have an Irish theme a test run of the park basically a carnival thumb Fair was held at Dublin Airport with the largest ferris wheel in Europe a part was forced to close early due to bad weather investors in the site were concerned and pulled out when asked in 1998 CEO of canine carnival company said that rides were being worked on and it was definitely going ahead it never did the stories of this planned Europe's largest theme park coming to northern Dublin will continue for years in reality it was nothing more than a dream ever ideas for a fiend part would pop up throughout the years one be a movie world Ireland taking guests into the movies Gilligan's World and a short-lived children's theme park that actually did open pogos Wonderland which had opened in 2004 it lasted less than a year and racked up 1.4 million in debt it would be the potato-chip theme park that would be the first real theme park that had potential and with it eventually would bring Ireland's only major roller coaster located in country mief around 30 miles outside of Dublin the potato inspired theme park would hope to attract 200 thousand guests a year the idea to make the potato chip park would come from Roy Coyle Roy was inspired by Hershey Park in Pennsylvania which was built by Milton Hershey as a place for his employees and families to relax but then grew into a major tourist attraction Coyle wanted to do something similar but with tattoes the park itself would have an American theme including a potato haunters Native American village get it like Pocahontas but potatoes this area have painted tepee tents and yes I hear you ask why does mr. tato have a love for Native American Wow let me tell you it began when he traveled the globe in search of exotic crisps flavors he discovered the Native Americans had a great respect for nature and they became kindred spuds to the tribes he became known as the big man inside the jacket mr. tato traveled all over the continent of the Americas and stayed with many tribes he would regularly give them tato crisps what you would see at a park was a little slice of the life and culture mr. tato witnessed from his trips yes seriously this is the official story from when the park opened and why there was a Native American section classic mr. tato other areas included t2 plains an open area full of farm animals powwow adventure playground and Buffalo Ridge with American animals such as 250 Buffalo and cougars part zoo and part amusement park it will be built on 55 acres of land with over 100 attractions it costs 8.5 million euros and took three years to complete finally opening in November 2010 even it's 800 space car park would have flavors of crisps names such as the cheese and onion car park while it was a theme park which claimed it had over 100 attractions they were not really rides one attraction was actually just listed as walkways don't be disappointed though because here you could stroll past potato falls you could also take a tour of the nearby tato factory after opening the park did meet the hope for attendance with 224 thousand people visit in the 2010 season and numbers continued to rise by 2013 495 thousand guests visited the park over the first four seasons the park added smaller attractions and rides to its offerings but it was time for something bigger Ireland's biggest longest fastest roller coaster in fact Ireland's only major roller coaster [Music] based on the Irish mythological demigod known for his terrifying battle frenzy the 8.5 million euro wooden roller coaster will be built by the gravity group from Cincinnati Ohio construction began on September 1st 2014 and officially opened on June 5th 2015 I think their best ride I have is the good Colin right it's the most excite oh god just the thrill of it even every time you go up on it it seems to be a little bit different and it's just the buzz of it because this timber made from 800,000 kilograms of yellow pine imported from South America the ride was heavily marketed as Europe's largest wooden rollercoaster with an inversion in fact to this very day the official Park website states that Tito Park is proud to be home of Ireland's first roller coaster which isn't though it was the only permanent roller coaster in the country that doesn't sound quite as flashy though and it was also advertised as Europe's largest wooden roller coaster with an inversion the only thing is there is not an inversion jukkalan is a great high-speed decent lampf ride but there is no inversion every single newspaper article or website states this is europe's largest wooden roller coaster with an inversion one state in this in a very first line of their article and in the second line it states the ride drops nearly 30 meters and in a couple of sections the track almost goes upside down every single article from opening day states it does have an inversion even gravity group leave roller coaster designer corey keeper said we are so excited to have created europe's largest wooden roller coaster with an inversion this likely relates to the right over banked turn let's talk about that and see if it actually is an inversion the turns angle is 115 degrees most people will take anything past 135 degrees two classes and inversion some people say it has to be 180 degrees some don't even care but today here we do care and COO Cullen has zero inversions and this was just used as a marketing ploy to get people to come see the new and still is to this day hmm wait when you look at it maybe it is an inversion you do pass the vertical mark just get in it's definitely not an inversion let's take ourselves out of that rabbit hole though and look at what the right experience actually is which takes riders in 24 seat timber liner trains complete with KUKA Lane at the front of the 105 foot lift hill and down the 102 feet drop followed by a small airtime Hill which can launch you out of your si followed by eyes and twists before the non-inverting over-banked turn the train then flies over another hill before a figure of 8 of bank turns and small airtime Hills with a mostly smooth ride throughout it is surprisingly really good the first year it ranked 19th in the world's top wooden roller coasters at the golden ticket Awards a remains at number 35 today mega phobia at oakwood is still on that list many years after opening Wicca man is nowhere to be found [Music] the ride is taller longer and faster that any of the UK wooden roller coasters which is many and even ranks quite well in statistics against many of the UK steel roller coasters reaching speeds of 56 miles per hour on its 3590 feet of track the only coasters in the UK longer than air are icon smiler the big one and the Ultima with a great drop good airtime and a beautiful design I can safely say is the best roller coaster in Ireland not just because is really the only one even though it is the right increased park attendance by double for the 2015 season with 750 thousand guests visited the park investments continued in the park and 2017 for a new heavily feed log flume bill it was also announced that the part would get another major coaster in 2019 costing seventeen point five million euros and many places hinted it could be a hybrid RMC of course it never happened and a family coaster was added instead after this a new 14 million euro steel roller coaster was announced for 2021 being longer than kou : but the same high and described as two coasters in one intertwined new generation for kumar suspended thrill coasters along with a vicuna family boomerang coaster give in Ireland and Tito Park another thrill coaster planning permission was a course once again denied due to noise concerns hopefully with all the issues around the world today this does still go ahead and is eventually approved in 2015 Roy Coyle sold his shares of La Kofu to the company into snack in Germany and in the Irish ownership Tito's with the new company paying tato park to continue to use the name tato at the fee part until 2021 when they hope it can be renewed each person next in the park currently gets a free bag of tato Chris Ireland may not be known for its roller coasters but COO : was a great start for the potato chip Tito theme park which has become a sick most popular tourist attraction in the country the park is not really aimed at burro seekers of only a handful of flat rides but the park is full of friendly staff animals themed areas a one pretty great roller coaster and while the park continues to expand its right catalogue with new rollercoasters planned in the future it is still mostly a zoo with a few rides however if you find yourself in the Dublin area and the park is open in the future I would suggest you head to tato part and take a ride on cool cooler also don't forget to try teh toes mr. tato demands air just don't tell him that
