saltwater and freshwater pearl's what is the difference in the two I love talking about the differences in the way their culture the different water environments production and more but let's say you take away all the details surrounding how the end where these pearls are formed in fact if you looked at two of these pearls that had been formed naturally how would you know which one was saltwater and which one was freshwater well I'm here to tell you there is only one difference and it comes down to the chemical composition the basic elements that pearls are made of so water pearls and freshwater pearls are majority calcium and if you put them if you take them to the lab and you put them in an energy dispersive x-ray fluorescent machine you'll see they fluoresce differently and that's because saltwater pearls do not have the mineral manganese in them and freshwater pearls do so you'll see that they spike in the chemical element manganese and that is the only difference in these two pearls
