so we're hiking up the trail and uh i haven't looked down i saw a skeleton i can see some bones i believe it's a snake skeleton i'm wondering if we can figure out what kind of snake does that rattles see him that's a snake right there all right i'm not gonna touch it because it's kind of gross but think soup no you don't want to make soup out of it yeah let's get it go let's keep going look at this tree over here there's some big like scratch marks on it i think it might be a sam squinch all right so what we have is a whole bunch of wood chips look at that kind of weird isn't it and you see where something's like when you're clawing at the tree going up there this is a it's a marker tree for sand squinch this is his territory so if we go any higher we might have problems boys yeah we're crossing somebody's boundary all right there easy really tore that tree up didn't he ah but it could be a woodpecker a pleated woodpecker one of the two i'm out on a brand new adventure today with maximus and his dad ryan and they're bringing they are bringing me to a home site way up in the mountains and we're actually almost there um it's pretty cool looking you ready if you look right up through there that's the chimney stack now i have not been up there yet um so i don't really know how old it is they have been metal detecting up here in the past and found a few things i'm not really sure what they found but one thing i didn't want to show you is i think this is an old road or at least a lane to this house you see this trace going down through the woods how uh that happens when wagons and horses use a trail and when it rains of course the water washes down through there and takes the soil away over the you know decades or centuries you end up with something like that going through the woods the chimney's right there and it goes off the hill so what i would recommend to these guys doing is follow it and there may be more homes up that way and also follow it down and look for more homes down that way because that might actually be an old road and not just a lane okay so let's go ahead and pop on top of the hill and look at the rock pile see what she is now you're seeing this for the first time as mi in our lifetimes uh yeah it's a nice old chimney stack until they're still standing see right through it isn't that cool all right let's go around and see what the trying to get an idea of what this looks like up here now the property we're on it's a big property but a lot of people have metal detected it in the past and i guess they still do i mean they get permission so we're not the first ones here i'm sure oh that's cool look at this big fireplace here first thing i caught my eye of course was the iron i have to be really careful up here there are rattlesnakes and copperheads all over these mountains here's some iron that was dug out of here at some point in the past big old uh look at the size of this lentil stone um that's what we know that's how they build the fireplace they put the fireplaces right here of course they need a big long stone across the top to support the weight of the rest of the chimney that's a monster right there so there's something that will make sure there's no snakes stuff that that somebody's found it's probably a little stovall stove that's a horseshoe it looks kind of like a mule shoe but you'll notice it's broken there it's actually slightly different in design too so ah jeez oh my god oh my god do i scream like a little girl oh my god oh that's not a copperhead but it's a snake i cannot believe i did that that's a couple of them there look at them so there were at least three of them two of them got my knee is like like i got a thorn in it so i hope there's not been snake bit uh two i'm already gone away and there's a third right there i'm not gonna bother them anymore yeah it's pretty cool place man appreciate you bringing me up here yeah no problem it's awesome i love it you just picture the people up here a couple centuries ago doing their thing you know up in the way up in the mountains it's awesome i like it so we're still doing just a little bit of sight exploration here uh ryan says there's an old sprit you see there's a spring over here yeah so this is probably the spring that serviced the house oh wow let's look at this thing some of the home sites i've been to up in the general area actually have just holes dug that collected the water and not really a well well but this is this nice little spring here you got some they got a rock stacked up here a little bit of a so they probably had a building over this at one time spring here they could kept their milk in theirs keep it cool in the [Music] summertime and keep it warm enough in the winter time and down the hill it would go so this is how they got the water what's this same thing here's another pit let's check this out real quick i always like to just kind of look around when i first get to the place just give me an idea what what people might have been doing up here and where here's another pit this might be uh mineral exploration because this looks like our ore that's a piece of iron ore right here because in these hills up here they were i mean they were first settled because they were looking for iron ore that would have been back in the early 1700s so i suspect that's what this is all about or this rock right here is some type of uh iron ore i don't know it's not really super heavy doesn't give a signal at all and sometimes it doesn't uh sometimes a magnet will stick to it just depends it might be just low grade all right cool very awesome we're detecting with the atmx security t-max today zero program zero discrimination maximum sensitivity let's just go ahead and listen to what it sounds like yeah i have not looked around yet um oh yeah listen to that so all those grunts that's iron that's probably like nails and stuff we're listening for high squeaks maybe there now i'm using a new loop today that's the viper loop from garrett i've never used it before so might and might have to you might have to get used to the signals oh old shotgun show me i see it yeah yeah so if you're digging uh shotgun shelves here it's probably not completely dug out as far as other people have metal detected although i mean you can avoid these signals pretty easy if you want to but you'll miss a few buttons just hope yet oh my square nail awesome can i see it is that old well let's take a look at it this is a square nail the top is relatively flat so that tells me it's machine made so this is not a hand forged nail it's a machine made nail so post 1700 this is 1800s so it's pretty old yeah that's found pretty nice this isn't that old that's what my dad said it's like oh yeah so this is a round nail and uh they date from the late 1800s up to present so we find that we know it's after the civil war square hill is a pretty much civil war before okay pretty awesome man congratulations now something old yeah i don't think i found anything yeah we just haven't done anything yet so let's get to work okay so here's what i'm going to do i've looked around a little bit here not getting really any good squeakers but i'm going to dig a pit a small hole right in the foundation of the house here where the most nails are there's a carpet of nails okay everything that was in the house fell down either when it burned or rotted it's all right here so there'll be millions of nails but it could be coins underneath it and buttons and stuff so let's just go ahead like right here we'll dig a hole see what we can find and uh if we find a law it might be worth just excavating the whole thing in time all right so let's just dig a hole here we'll just do this together peel the top layer off and uh see how far down the artifact layer goes could go down six inches could go down a foot i just don't know see all kinds of nails things and nails popping up already well this dark layer is where all the artifacts are going to be all the nails buttons coins junk and that is natural that's a natural layer so this didn't have a basement per se but everything that was in-house will be right here let's run a metal detector over it all this stuff right here yeah see there's tons of iron listen [Music] all right here's what i'm going to do i'm going to kind of spread it out a little bit and really take my time put my headphones back on because with both listening at it in the headphones is actually much better than just through the speakers at least for me i can just hear the distinct noises the clips and the beeps and the clacks and stuff like that so i'll put these back on look around and if i find anything good she'll be the first to know yeah so what do you think find anything good not not really just apparently well this like i was telling you this is the uh center this is where the house stood and i'm digging this hole here i just want to show you guys what i'm finding and like i suspected there's a lot of square now look at all the square nails i'm getting they're all machined now they're all machined there's no rosehead so that's telling me this house is probably you know eighteen hundreds not seventeen hundreds let's get the pinpointer out just take a listen to all the other nails i haven't got out of here yet oh let me turn my headphones off going into the headphones there we go all right you ready listen to the nails all the beats and there's something there i mean that could be a gold coin i don't know yet nails nails or something metal metal metal metal metal metal metal metal metal metal metal metal so there's lots of metal in the ground there's actually too much for the metal detector they really really effectively discriminate everything out and so we can just hear the coins and buttons so we'll look around a little bit more and um if we do find something good i'll show it to you when i'm done i'll show you a giant pile of nails probably as tall as you pile of nails yeah yeah so i don't know you want to look around here with me or not i mean could be some good stuff in there i don't know i'll help and with that nice solid beat there you go these two we're still digging nails yeah all square nails those down there just be careful i'm not seeing a lot of pottery or glass so that's kind of you know they may not have had much money these people what'd you get or it may have all been taken out before the house yeah they couldn't they might have moved and just down below the the home site there and i'm just kind of going through the woods seeing what might be down here just dug this this is a big old piece of cooking kettle you see they got the nice curvature to it it's right on the surface that's actually that's the top of it right there so we'll keep looking around i mean this place has probably been metal detected a million times uh over the decades and because we're not really hearing a lot of non-fear stuff i suspect it was so making the loop kind of around the house just to see what's up here looking with metal detector and i'm finding more of these holes doug there's a hole there and you see right below me there's another one now i know those aren't sink holes because there's a mound of dirt beside it i just like the amount of dirt we're standing on so these are prospects for the iron ore for sure that's what we're seeing through the woods chimney's down there so we're going to make a loop around and see if we get into any other spots i would say if we don't come up with something fairly quickly non-ferrous that maybe we'll move down the hill and look for maybe a place that's never been discovered because i i'm sure they'll be up here and everyone knows about this chimney apparently uh so it's been hit a lot over the years but let's get a little bit longer though what do you say give another half hour maybe an hour so i'm working my way around the uh the chimney stack and i'm on the far side and this is my first squeaker that is actually old dug some shotgun shells and you know a few pieces of pot which are old but uh this is a this is like a pewter substance which i suspect is going to be maybe part of our wash board perhaps um see it's kind of crumbly it's like lead but it's crumbly so i think it's like a pewter washboard probably got a big iron signal over here to kind of just kick the dirt and i can see lots of um let's say pieces of cooking where that's like a that's a frying pan right there a piece of a stove so this might be where someone threw all their stuff they were digging up earlier you know in years past could be part of the dump to the house i don't know oh yeah so i'll poke around here a little bit see what else yeah that's probably uh people through their junk when they're digging but i will dig around here a little bit and see what else we can come up with with my fingers fingers something odd but no eyeballs no eyeballs oh okay so when i pulled it out of the ground it was sandwiched together like this and it's heavy yeah it looks like glad yeah you know what i'd say it's lead but when i see it yeah let's see yeah that's definitely lead that's you know i think this was probably melted into a container of some sort that's what was against the yeah they were a sandwich or there i you know i don't know but it's definitely that's melted lead a little pile of it hard to say what it's too um it's pretty good sign i'd definitely look around there a little bit more and this isn't a type of house that would have had pipes in it so it's not solder yeah man you might be on to something that's awesome good signal huh yeah that's like a belt buckle right there all right now i was digging over here and getting a bunch of iron so let me see if i can find the rest of my metal detector find my metal sector really kind of growing up in here all right somewhere oh yeah there we go all right i'll dig around here a little bit more see if that looks like a line of stones there i actually did come across a little foundation down there but i didn't get any signals so i didn't show it to you probably should since that's all i'm finding is foundations i'm guessing a suspender oh that's pretty can't slip brace so brace you know what a brace is i always think it's a spender clip but uh it's a braces a suspender that's what they call them in the old days and like over in the uk united kingdom england scotland stuff they call them braces they don't say suspenders but yeah that could easily date to the air of this house 1800s very well awesome man that's good that's what you're finding up here anything good no just a meal oh you got a bunch of them though huh square nails yeah look at lots of nails in here lots of broken ones and huh too hot to be doing this isn't it it'd be better if we were in the river wouldn't it it it is a perfect day to come here though yeah yeah it is it is a good day to be in the woods but it's also a good day to be in the water i think here's what we're going to do i'm going to look over this hole a little bit with my metal detector and then we're going to head down the hill back toward the vehicles but follow that old lane or road down to see if we can maybe find another foundation that's not quite as obvious as this one and might have a few more uh good artifacts around it but yeah we found a few things so we didn't get skunked what do you think head down the hill take the ring from your hand and bury it in the sand mother she's covered she promised to keep promised to keep hidden in her dirt or deep in her creek mother earth she ain't saying exactly what she's saying where it is or what it might be earth
