[violin intro] On a hill far away stood an old rugged cross The emblem of suffering and shame And I love that old cross where the dearest and best For a world of lost sinners was slain So I'll cherish the old rugged cross Till my trophies at last I lay down I will cling to the old rugged cross And exchange it some day for a crown Oh, that old rugged cross so despised by the world Has a wondrous attraction for me For the dear Lamb of God Left His glory above To bear it to dark Calvary So I'll cherish the old rugged cross Till my trophies at last I lay down I will cling to the old rugged cross And exchange it some day for a crown [violin melody] So I'll cherish the old rugged cross Till my trophies at last I lay down I will cling to the old rugged cross And exchange it some day for a crown To the old rugged cross I will ever be true It's shame and reproach gladly bear Then He'll call me some day to my home far away Where His glory forever I'll share So I'll cherish the old rugged cross Till my trophies at last I lay down I will cling to the old rugged cross And exchange it some day for a crown And exchange it some day for a crown Thank you so much for watching this week's Worship Wednesday. I hope you enjoyed one of the most beautiful and powerful hymns in the world "The Old Rugged Cross". This song was written in 1913 by George Bernard. And George was a preacher and he was also a singer And George realized that he wanted a greater understanding of the cross. And so I wanted to share this with you. "I was praying for a full understanding of the cross. I read, and studied, and prayed. The Christ of the cross became more than a symbol. It was like seeing John 3:16 leave the printed page, take form and act out the meaning of redemption. While watching the scene with my mind's eye, the theme of the song came to me." What a gift God gave George in that moment. A song that has touched millions and millions and millions of people around the world. I know it's touched me. And so I just encourage us to think about the true meaning of the cross and what God did for us. And cling to the words of John 3:16. "For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son that whosoever believeth in Him shall not perish but have everlasting life." What a gift God gave to us. I hope you enjoyed this. If you did please share it with a friend. Thank you so much for tuning into Worship Wednesday.
