New Orleans of the mid-1970s had an indefinable spirit that permeated the city it was wild beautiful and at the same time unpredictable into this came the New Orleans Jazz basketball team only the second NBA team located in the south the team became the embodiment of the fun-loving flamboyant attitudes of New Orleans as one writer put it everybody has come back to the old town full of the Jazz and they promise to knock the fans off their feet with their playing indeed they did and it was a flashy ball control passing an arching jump shots of a true southern icon Pistol Pete that defined the team the game was fun and the crowds were equally as fun Pete Maravich had the ability to do anything on the basketball court that could be done and that he wanted to do it was just an incredible experience he was the franchise [Applause] what do you say 27 points for Maravich and we're 5 minutes almost 6 minutes from half time there was something else [Applause] we was a close-knit was like a family it was magical I tell you the effect the thing that Guevara Avenue would have to cool off pretty soon because he had missed too many fantasies I think he defies that law and a few others sometimes Otto more gets fed in the post back to the pistol goes on the drive right to the basket it is good at ease pow now you stopping to see is too much I don't know about you but I'm running out of things to say about it [Music] [Applause] [Music] tonight from the Superdome in New Orleans the Knicks face the New Orleans Jazz [Music] good evening everyone i'm andy muster along with cal Ramsay here in the Superdome and tonight the next are facing the New Orleans jazz and of course that spells Pete Maravich he had the biggest single game of anybody against the Knicks this year 39 points who's gonna stop him go I don't know what's gonna stop it but I think Clyde might get the assignment Irish players playing great basketball particularly here at home but Walt Frazier's come along for New York and recent ball games he's playing very strong defense and he's scoring well that should be the matchup to watch tonight pray against the people Harvick well I'll never never forget when I was sitting at the Richelieu hotel and they signed Pete and I just know how much he was ecstatic about leaving Atlanta and coming here even though he knew an expansion team is going to be a lot a lot of runners could be rough rough road to hold and when he moved here you know it was really worth it cuz he was really about to quit basketball when he played for Atlanta he's about to just say this in worth it because of the whole whole sister I mean everything around he's being blamed for everything I guess one of the fun times that I can remember about being in New Orleans and playing in the Louisiana Superdome was once we were considered at our home court we were asked to follow out to Disneyland jazz band and do the second line before every home game and if you can imagine what twelve tall guys looked like running out behind a band of people dressed like the Mardi Gras every game that was the New Orleans Jazz the fans liked us I think the town embraced us the team was immersed in our culture and the fans just loved them and of course it caught on it was that the players were very approachable the staff and management were approachable it was just an incredible experience there's the pistol he has really had some outstanding games against the Knicks one time last year the pistol pumped in 45 in a double overtime game last year Otto Moore and Bob McAdoo to jump it up Don Murphy to put the ball in the air and we are underway as Fraser wins the tip so the next player that Fraser goes in underneath Merritt pass it back between the legs of McAdoo and picked up by McElroy and up the Maravich pistol down to McElroy drives the baseline a reach-around is hung short on mcfillin gets the rebound and Cal you said he was in there to give the Knicks some extra power on the board Tommy's a very good offensive rebounder here's Tommy Mac with the ball giving it back to Monroe Pearl starts down the middle beats to the baseline atomic felon jump shot is good and the next break on top dude another you know the Tommy's the real fish shooter wants to get himself set up he got a good test in Monroe that time in real good shooting position James McElroy in and out of the starting lineup for New Orleans this year but back in since the injury to Freddie Boyd he's going to have surgery on her right Dee in just a couple of days that shot would not fall for more and here comes the Knicks Fraser on the dribble against McElroy a buying defensive guard I can do pitches back to Monroe and gets in fact as big five years is not over Otto more and he is hit well next without switching on defense in that game against Atlanta and I'm sure it's got again this evening because they said a lot of picks out there for Pete Maravich the gallery makes the stutter move here is a pass off to the baseline that is goodbye the festival is he gets his first field goal and a bow on Tom McMillan well that time pistol moving without the basketball he comes along the baseline Clive gets caught behind the screen you'll watch me and Macmillan switches open help out not good - switches over - how about and the foul is called I didn't see you hit him but they call the foul and the free throw is good so that's a three-point play for Maravich here's Frazier got it is no good no more gets the board next shooting Koba now they're getting very good shot within that falling for them white almost gets a steal at midcourt here's American mr. Pete and he's got five points already in New Orleans now by three at 7:00 - for seven straight points for New Orleans and a follow Bob McAdoo as the Knicks give it up naca do call for moving when they set a pick along the baseline that's two personal fouls on him already McElroy studies in private moved around nine straight points have been scored by New Orleans it's a nine to four who are in the lead at riddles and we'll take a timeout with 841 left from the first quarter the score now the Jazz nine in the next four at the Superdome the game was such an event it was a social cultural and athletic endeavor it wasn't unusual I had 20 25 thousand people there particularly the courtside fans working with hot rod we were within 10 feet of the fans it got very interesting there I mean you know you got 30 40 thousand people's yelling screaming they let the coach snow they let the team know they let the opposing team snow what they thought about them and it was probably some of the best fans that that you could ever have in that place where the jazz sounded like the place was the Saints does I mean it was that noise it got it got rocking and everybody used to stomp on the metal braces they had and it was I mean it was great the Jazz found a home in a cavernous building that wasn't built for basketball but it fit so well especially with all the promotions and you know the the the memories of that are the you know the $1 tickets and the big crowds and the flood and the rowboat or the the pirogue excuse me wouldn't be a rowboat in the walls a pirogue to get Pete to the game next score is the first four points in the ballgame the Jazz comes roaring back with mine so it's 9:00 to 4:00 the Knicks F had good shots on offense but they haven't fallen for them and they're not getting any offensive rebounds after they missed those shots hey speaking of swings when these two teams met at the Garden on Tuesday night there was a 38-point swing at that game that was really remarkable the Knicks were down by a dozen came back to leave by 26 and they won it by 17 moving into the baseline is greasier he's got a switch and he's on grip and pistol picks him up as he moves to the middle back off the time to fill in for the jumper with two seconds on the timer they beat the clock second basket for Tom Machpelah who got a start tonight jazz leads at 9:00 to 6:00 and Tommy's matched up against the rookie Griffin has done a great job rebounding that's the charge on beat first foul on Maravich there's Stallworth moving in for a jump shot to the short of the mark Frazier for the rebound Jimmy McMillan had gotten out quickly let's see if five goes to him there's a Fraser jump shot it is off the back iron no good Maravich rebound the pistol who is about set to negotiate a new contract with New Orleans scored seven points for festival he's been pretty good negotiating position to leading the league in scoring right now well that's right and of course the injury to Gail Goodrich which has disabled him for the year and at Gail's age they don't know whether he's gonna be able to come back or not Tommy Mac short bob mackadoo around and no good pelvic culling this is the follow us forward rebound NIC's with three shots that almost fell and in the final analysis none did New Orleans leads a 13-2 10th we're in the opening quarter after the game the Knicks have a charter flight back to New York there's a Maravich shot of I miss having their tough time defending against pistol free right now I can do to the hoop and he hangs in short auto more rebounds and out the Maravich pistol moving up the center line with a jump shot no but a foul Munroe and the pearl does not fill even fellow Jazz running with every opportunity now they're controlling their defensive board the Knicks on getting any outfits of rebounds and the Jazz coming up running every time and pits the life to handle the ball on the fast-break Maravich and 83% free-throw shooter going to the line for the second time he is 1 for 1 that's the first foul on Monroe red Holzman is screaming at Don Murphy he says that Meredith jumped right into the defending ballplayer all Monroe to call it go that way just over 4 minutes remaining in the opening quarter from the Superdome in New Orleans now the McAdoo low post he takes the baseline more it's good and a foul on Otto more a possible three-point play coming up the strong move by Bob McAdoo joins baseline that time he had almost no room at all using his quickness here coming underneath and get the layup and he'll shoot one and he complete that for three-point play right he makes the foul and so McAdoo with 5 points and the Jazz in the penalty now so he would have had an extra try had he not made it at 17 14 New Orleans on top 350 left in quarter number one Pete Maravich mission is heaven here from LSU war he's an offensive machine 13 points in the quarter already 13 of 19 for New Orleans McAdoo 7 perfect 5 jazz on top by just 219 217 the last play by Maravich Tommy Bowen came over to help put spit out and they were both all over him and he still got this shot in a drive-by Williams pitch it off here's a jumper at the before he doesn't score very much Auto averaging just six points to a ballgame and he was picked up by the Jazz as a free agent I could do a jump shot from the right lane is good and McAdoo now has nine points to leave the Knicks you might see magazines pushing off a lot on defense legato is not a real offensive threat but if you give him a short jump shot he'll make it but McAdoo Ken gamble against him helped his teammate go you see Coleman to the middle and Maravich he's double-teamed and can't shoot gets it back to EC he's free not to really a score he C is basically a defensive forward so the pistol at supply no share of it I'll bet to show here shipping up now pitbull beating bob mackadoo now we've got two minutes left in the opening quarter I could do in the lane gets the shot away it is banked up and in by Big Bob and he's got 11 this turning into an offensive show about both ball clubs right now nobody is rippy earlier this year we had a shootout between Maravich and Monroe in a game of the garden really play looks like a puddle at time he was moving very well to get his shot off that time [Applause] and we've got a timeout at the Superdome with 143 left in the first quarter the score the guys 25 and the next 23 Municipal Auditorium I and you know the the people hanging over the rafters and Bill Walton coming to town and being called stinky and the Jazz you know when in their first game against the Portland Trailblazers when I think it was Waltons rookie season if I'm not mistaken he with the shaggy hair the beard and you know the Grateful Dead attitude that he had those those those days in that dark dank arena were are you know just so different than what the NBA game is now playing in the old Municipal Auditorium and you would have to have been there at that time to appreciate some of these things but we didn't have any dressing facilities and in the hallway around the arena the people had set up iron rods and put these drapes up there and I'd be in there at halftime we'd be down by about 15 or 20 at half with this expansion team and these wonderful New Orleanians who had been drinking that Dixie beer for 1/2 would stick their head between the curtains and say you bum you you guys couldn't play dead the New Orleans people are wonderful Pete Maravich headed for the foul line as we come back to play pistol was fouled by butch beard we've got 143 left in the quarter would you believe this 16 point of this period now that's really something 17 of 27 for Pistol Pete it's 27:23 New Orlean and he's sitting in from all over the floor here at passing down to Jim McMillian a well-run play to Monroe but he is in the lane every second pretty good defense by Aaron James in the lane Aaron James kept Monroe out of shooting position that's New York sixth turnover the Earl is upset he's very close to a technical foul where a is getting a rest now and you see bo Howard number 14 in the game for the first time Moe was a draft choice of the Cavaliers this year out of Maryland picked up here recently is a create jazz widest edge of the game an eight point margin 31 to 23 ten seconds left in the quarter it is McGill Roy had nothing like the old boy [Applause] Jackson gets up for the night Erlik good free-throw shooter and that's it now let's see there's Jackson pressuring the inbound by Coleman he gets it into Nate Williams it comes up front to Howard Howard [Applause] [Music] the autopsy that was done by the Los Angeles County coroner showed an amazing revelation that Pete had a congenital heart defect and that what occurred in a Pasadena gymnasium at 40 years of age for Pete was really destined at birth and that most people who have this disorder don't live past 20 years of age I was with Pete in in New York we were playing the Knicks up there and of course he always had the Knicks loved him up there New York was just his town and we were walking from the hotel walking down the street and I said this taxi stopped there and a lady was getting into it and I said Pete that's Nanette from Ray and so he walked up to the other to the wouldn't he looked down and the lady said aren't you Pete Maravich just just the symbolic of Pete that everybody knew him Matt Matt for Bray who the hell but she never seen a bad basketball game the the Super Dome as big as it was was still a quiet place comparatively certainly the crowds went wild but as the game was being contested there was no hip-hop there were no lights flashing and what I miss about that and that sort of spans this this this time is hearing the sneakers on the floor you could hear the guys making their cuts and you know stopping and that that was basketball music Maravich is back in the game now at Tiki Burton and Bill Bradley are playing for the Bonnie shelf Bonnie blocked that one nicely another trying William scores a Williams here comes butch feeding off the honey shelf then he lays it ice boat by Lonnie scooped up and open namaha but she's a mystery Shack Monroe after he's really shooting wrong at first for its 35 body choking drugs his first personal all tonight and Maravich to the foul line [Music] that was his 18th point nobody in this ballgame has missed a free throw yet both sides perfect at the foul line now it's 37-28 New Orleans cranly on the floor passed the McAdoo goes down to the baseline shoots over top PC Coleman is no good and nervous takes the rebound away from Bonnie Coleman jump up by 1139 the 28:39 the next 28 he could handle the basketball and love to do it and the only thing that I asked the other players when you're running down the court you keep your eye on him and keep your hands above your waist because you're liable to get to basketball at any time and he loved to trick somebody he had puts beard guarding Walt Frazier guard him and Earl would roll please with all three of them on that day I remember games like Pete where he was chastised for in the newspaper for shooting too much and so he got leavings against Seattle he goes down for three quarters did not take a shot as 15 assists I believe then in the fourth quarter decided to shoot who scored 15 or 16 points and I think that's what most people are going to remember about the New Orleans Jazz is Pete Maravich [Applause] Maravich I don't know how you stop with that like that you have to have help and right now the Knicks are unable to do anything with 21 points for the pistol right now in a 41:28 whistle before the shot by taking bread in the three seconds that basket does not count well the turnovers are mounting and the Knicks of committed 9 to 5 for the jab Fraser makes the bounce pass to deke burden the ball was knocked away by Howard here comes mo look at the happy poet and an inbound seal for the jazz everything is going wrong this boat player [Applause] Vicki Barney's life we've got a loose ball foul nothing is going right for the Mitch Williams feeding off the drive there's Maravich they got it to the guy they want mr. Lennon out of the lane 49 [Applause] Lonnie jokin gets the basket and that's only the second basket for the Knicks in the quarter as you watch Dean lemon derp get ready to come into the game this having two big problems right now I wanted turnovers on the offense [Applause] [Music] that basket counted and Walt Frazier draws the foul money Shelton is for it all points for the Knicks in the quarter as you watch team manager come to work Otto Moore is not a good free-throw shooter 67 3 rebound Phil Jackson nearly stolen by Howard 51 to 30 next we'll get it back but Howard playing some defense here husband got put in behind there up Monroe and knocking the ball away New Orleans has outscored the next 20 before in the quarter a loose ball foul is called on Meredith pistol caught on his third personal foul that could be a factor it's pretty early to have three 703 left in the second quarter the next have turned it over six times in the fray New Orleans fix it right off again they're just not moving therefore well on the offensive end the jab plan we look at defense with the crook the victim not show up on offense go well last night the mix of their lowest quarter of the year a dozen points right now in this quarter halfway through it they scored just for 6:20 left in the quarter looks like somebody ought to put a handle on that bar right now to do shoot and inside contact between Phil Jackson and Otto Moore and they both went down to the floor 13 points for McAdoo Mountain in forgiving team members of the test in China to change speed marries nobody else been able to do anything with them so far [Applause] what do you say 27 points for Maravich and we're five minutes almost six minutes from half-time he's an incredible performance [Music] pushed into the lane but he traveled it doesn't count looking shoot but it was to get inside so I feel watching using explain here what they're against game number two now he comes off the screen by Nate Williams an auto boy two guys box not right there and the Epistle goes up for a shot [Applause] there's deal oh the turnovers are killing the knick Kelly twenty three point lead fifty five to thirty two left in the second quarter the score the Jazz 55 on the next 32 it was just a big party as I say up with 41 games every year that's that's only played 41 games at home and so my whole family good night I had the Sun was busboy I'll be the ball boy for therefore so a long time and have all these people that want to sit where I was sitting and I was a big celebrity I I liked it you can this you just you have a feeling about a person but they had the feeling about this team same as you do a person I mean all those guys truck rich Gail Goodrich my brother they all they loved all this guy there was nobody they never disliked I don't think they have a booty anybody and it's not going with to tomorrow with an effort to get them better offensive play in the ball game the points they scored just six in the quarter so Bradley with the ball passing across to Monroe Burrell on a drive Maravich has been blocked off to Jim McCullen for a jumper it snows ahead and a rebound Griffith here's the half time NBA score Golden State 52 and buffalo hunting warriors of lost three in a row and the Braves have won four straight Joe Mullaney doing a fine job in Buffalo [Applause] well he is doing at all not throwing it touch that arm Deen religion no good rebound Coleman no second prize for the Knicks right now we've got three and a half minutes left on this border and it's been a nightmare I thought it was the third quarter nobody is missing at that end of the floor 61 232 they have almost doubled the Knicks output this is incredible out 50 showing the New Orleans Jazz they can do no wrong you just saw a butch beard getting ready to come in and an offensive foul and I tell you this is really unusual to see does everything go wrong this is not the largest deficit the mix of pace this year back on January 11 in the third quarter important but it's approaching that as Marvis guns one up and at 63 232 I feel and it's taken by meminger right now Pete Maravich has one less point than the mix as a team right now the Knicks can I do anything led on either end of the floor namond arrogance power [Applause] no it's going away by beer upfront to Jimmy McMillan he drive : rebounds thought was fine defense by Marvin Williams on a move and he travels yes he did [Applause] 2:17 left in the quarter [Music] the mix are calling a timeout well what do you think cow New Orleans at 31 points at the end of the opening quarter now they've got 63 the next time 26 and now they've got 32 well what do I think the Jets are playing a great basketball game no doubt about it they're doing everything right and the Knicks are doing everything wrong right now the Jazz getting good shots inside they're getting a second shot they're running the ball before the mix are not shooting while the jabs are controlling their defensive floor coming out very quickly and they have been outscored in the period 32 to 6 it is really one of the most unusual periods of NBA pro basketball that I've ever seen here comes Nikki burden Nikki goes inside puts it up good we've got a power go Jackson in for the next deke burden hits the first free throw to be hitting at 56% in his only free throw to say add action gets that ball the four threats worked in New York that time they made this deal and managed to hit the jump at the top of the key Knicks now with 11 points in the quarter make it the 12 points in the quarter chicky Burton comes back and scores again the next putting a little sentiment margin right now 65 to 43 jazz preached the pressure this time Howard feeding off the Williams he blows the layup McAdoo a rebound seven seconds in the quarter five seconds ticky burden to the basket no good and the rebound by Howard in the border [Applause] [Music] and that's the end of the first half with the score the Jazz 65 on the next 43 peat had a problem with the circulation to his heart as well as having an enlarged heart and these two problems he said almost certainly caused an arrhythmia or an abnormal rhythm of the heart that interfered with the pumping the contracting function of the heart he went into cardiac arrest and then of course he lost consciousness and even though we started CPR within 15 seconds of him stopping breathing because I was bent over him at that moment we could not start his heart beating again and here is the hugeness of this Superdome and this basketball court almost seems like it's lost in it they just kind of sign it up to one side put in those extra stands and away we go but this is a huge edifice here in New Orleans this is not your average arena 6543 as we start the third quarter New Orleans on top there's the pistol and he has been hot McElroy a little bit long and McAdoo gets the rebound and let's see if the next confer steer in the third quarter Vicki burden to McAdoo Mac Bates the pop shop zooms in tighter it is good and a foul on Otto more magazine making a good movie at a jump shot but he put the move that time on the big fella Otto more right he adds the free throw and so it's 65 46 Maravich male that back is he came across midcourt in the air there is the top by pistola all right you stopping mrs. Peters too much yeah I don't know about you but I'm running out of things to say about Narvik [Music] that is not doing a bad job in New York these doing they're all very well - he has outscored the pistol in the quarter hiya why bushes upset he got nothing but ball but he knocked the ball in the Maravich his head that's the old head foul count the pistol with a 37 point output on the story of this ball game is pistol 3 Martha she is really doing it all in this time I really get push me and help now defensively against [Music] [Applause] nine points for Maravich and that matches is high against the Knicks that matches the high for any single player in the NBA against New York this year beard misses offensive rebound Jackson back to Bush I can do and I will poke pleased seconds on the Knicks I tell you there's such a thing that Guevara averaging pistol we have to cool off pretty soon because too many Santas even I think he defies that law and a few others sometimes Otto more gets fed on the post back to the pistol goes on the drive right to the basket it is good at he's foul and he has hit for the highest number of points of any player against the Knicks this year he's got 41 he made another great outfit move that time going to his left during the round Tom McMillan and Tom pushing him as he goes up for sure Maravich at the foul line adds the point now it is 82 58 New Orleans and the pistol with 42 he is 10 for 10 at the foul line he is now 9 points away from his career-high EC Coleman gets called in the foul for New Orleans and New Orleans is taking this time out with 654 left in the third quarter thus far the guys 80 the next 58 I think we had players that complement each other and I think we had players that got along well off the floor like I said earlier we was a close-knit we was like a family but but the year that we had truck and like we had a truck Robinson and EC Coleman really when we played with EC at small four we had myself Bird star worry Finn Nate Williams so he C was a great defensive player we were the offensive player so EC didn't have to worry about school and career we had to take up the scoring load and he stopped the other two tough forward but I tell you that uh I think you can't be successful if you don't get along off the floor it's just like I tell the story all the time but star Worth and I stayed in the same apartment complex we played the same position and we were right to practice together in the same car one day I Drive one day he drive but we work hard against each other both ovals trying to make the team we'd have to scrimmage against each other but after practice it was over we get back in the car we go home have lunch and that's it that's the type of relationships that we had on the team it was such a special time in New Orleans and I really do think that the Jazz captured New Orleans and had a piece of its heart certainly unlike the Hornets do now and I didn't think that pro basketball could take away from the Saints but I guess the the Jazz shared a spot with the same 42 points pistol right now fraser night of the ball free live trying to dog fiscal feat Amba comes to McElroy a jump shot for him no good pachyderm rebounding now we've reached the halfway point of the quarter and it's 82 58 New Orleans the pearl throws up an off-balance shot no good Shelton fighting for the rebound it comes to Stallworth and he decides not to force the fast-break and to go ahead and wait Maravich still working four shots and he gets the shot oh what an incredible shot a foul will be called on McAdoo and he almost got the field goal they do go wrong tonight hello what's on everybody put a good move on but a row and get him off balance not just came over to help out you'll watch the replay now he puts the faith on arrow arrow goes past not going to terms to help out he get them both up in the end and he gets the contact there if he grows up for show distel is missed his first free throw he is now 11 of 12 at the line and you have to say I must he sits down for a large stretch of this ballgame if he keeps playing he's going to set a new career-high tonight because he's within eight points of it right now ten seconds on the timer Lonny Shelton shoots no good rebound DC coma its 8358 New Orleans the five and a half left in the third quarter this beau fire is he short he's running out of energy I think I might be a little tired now wouldn't be surprised Bray here let's run loose goodbye five for 45 remaining in the quarter the next we'll be facing a stretch of three straight games at home which they will enjoy Maravich misses again and a loose ball foul on Meredith the pistol was his fourth personal foul well if this juror here is the pistol apparently he's kind of cooled off nice missed several shots from the outside but he's had a fantastic outfit the night so far New Orleans in the penalty with 437 left in the quarter been a tough night for the net and no Joshua see New York going to a full-court press with Phil Jackson and the park they were pretty successful in the first birthday with ten points per shelf and here is Maravich dribbling through that press he's going to go in and drive shoot on the ran right over top by a cameraman rich the courtside boy he looks like he wants that new career-high tonight well that's awfully tough to press a man with his dribbling ability you'll watch him here beating Ronnie Shelton Monroe coming over and he gets broke right around Earl here he'll pump some as he grows up for a shot you make the three-point play out of it that's right he hits the foul that says 46th point on row no good rebound the pistol they're gonna have to score a little better than that take advantage of these opportunities on the missed shot Marvin still working for Johnson here goes the pistol double-team start now with 48 points can you imagine when you talk about all the things we've said about this guy the player in the NBA who averaged averaged 50 points a ball game and then with the big fellow Wilt Chamberlain I mean he didn't do it once in a while he went through a year averaging 50 points a ball game that's the record that I don't think we'll everything broken hearts out it a minute and a half left in the third quarter Ronnie puts the ball away from EC Coleman 14 Howard coming back for New Orleans number 14 number 24 Bill Bradley and turn it into the neck line up replacing Bob McAdoo let's go Pete Maravich getting arrest right now and listen to the hand he gets for this New Orleans sit down at 48 points or leeet's turns it over which beer lays it up on a pass from one role I tell you people have to be in great position to renegotiate his contract now after a game like this you wash Maravich here making a move against the spirit comes between his legs then he gets a little cream there comes around master to come to help welcome bill but the no avail so it's 90 for 75 New Orleans on top 48 seconds remaining in the third quarter [Applause] Lonny Shelton flirting it down to Jackson Monroe is fouled as he moves into the lane Oh Howard golems all second foul on Howard both clubs are in the penalty [Music] 94 77 again the press put on by the Knicks they need a tip by Jackson and the Knicks deal and here's a jumper for the curl no good Bradley tips it back to the pearl again when wrote a bill at the baseline back to Monroe a jump shot no good and a rebound for the next really one of that basket because the pressure defense got them the jams are true they were totally pressed to get the ball back and they only had a couple chakras it wouldn't call for well second remaining in the third quarter from the Superdome in New Orleans Moe Howard into the lamed water war is shot [Applause] instead of having to normal artery systems that supply blood to the heart he had a single coronary artery and the right side artery had to supply all the blood that the heart needed instead of it coming from two sides and that's the essence of why we lost him everybody loved to watch his play and Pete just instilled it with the rest of them because you you got a face break you don't know where the ball is coming from and you know he hit him in the head hit him in the back he hit him all over the place but they learned to play and and it was good it was good that was that was what you went to see Pete used to throw a pass that I've never seen throw throwing in the lead he could throw a ball palm it put his hand on top of the ball and throw it the length of the court with a reverse English on a fast break and have the ball bounce up underneath the basket to a streaking player and land right in the guy's hands for a layup I've never seen anyone in the game today that doesn't mean they're not there they don't have the talent to do it I've never seen I've seen overhead baseball passes volleyball passes blue daughter so to speak but Peter had this ability to take his hand and flip it up like that put reverse linguish on the ball and have it wait for the player to get to the goal it's never been done nobody's ever seen it he had revolutionized the game for a white player to come and start going through his legs during the game I mean everybody could go back and go back forth between their their knees and behind their back but Pete did in the game and Pete did it well the next will start this quarter with Munro and beard playing back hoard McAdoo it centers here's be removing it into the forecourt Pete Maravich is back into the game for New Orleans and he has scored 48 ear shot is no good Bradley offensive rebound the follow shot is overshot and an over-the-top foul on Lonnie show Lonnie hustling on the offensive laws trying to get that ball back to New York is Bill Bradley shot with respective as he went up and Lonnie picked up his fourth personal foul Maravich for the whole quarter to work on his career high is only three points away from it that's 96 to 81 next we've got the margin and happy jazz once leaded by well there's Maravich hitting his 50th point one away from a career high is career high coming into the year was 50 but he had that 51 point game in December [Applause] [Music] McAdoo call both New York yes big men are in foul trouble now I'm back at us for personal files and Ronnie sharpen it forth well as pickle 3000 eight seconds on the timer here at about the time the car dropped the ball and the Jazz picks it up and I've researched the time so their 23rd turn over Cal Theatre good opportunity 9 is 5 foot lead on the 50 naked across the 13 and their prey but Kristin Vick that should get that shot up in here a jumper by the pistol career-high for marathon 52 finds Narvik with a new home and he does it with nine minutes left in the ballgame it's a hundred 283 New Orleans on top and you folks watching on television tonight are seeing that this offensive game in Maravich is history he's played professional ball for seven years ten points for Tom McCullough again it's only a 15 point margin 100 to 85 Victor tried everything and everybody on the pistol and nobody's worked out too well a foreign still count [Applause] run out of room on this course you here in a minute [Applause] [Music] George sir ball in the third quarter with a mix at 41% the Jazz got 44% of all Fraser coming back so [Applause] Biron are coming out Oh Howard and Maravich remain on the New Orleans back live I post to Otto more he's played a surprisingly good game and he's played a lot more time than Kelly that's an offensive foul they'd made a move to get around Bill Bradley but if they did and get got his shot off he crashed into Tom McMillan [Applause] Abe Williams is called on the personal foul a second eight minutes remaining New Orleans by 17 points next data streak along Darmok villain Ali gets it started it's back to 15 Tommy Mack with 12 points tonight 102 87 the pistol firing 456 six points where he's incredible he had a toast because while we missed about three or four thousand I can't miss anything seven and a half minutes remaining McAdoo drives on Griffin puts it up with a lot of spin but it won't go and Griffin has a rebound here's the guy that had 25 rebounds against Milwaukee on the floor the fans cheering for Pete there goes the pistol he'll let us fly this when his off target basement owl no wrong with a jacket evening so he can pick up a couple here that would give him 58 [Applause] he makes them both so the pistol at 58 and the Jazz on top 106 87 seven minutes left in this ball game mix back home against the Pacers tomorrow night here's family jazz are taking a timeout in this crowd will roar [Applause] [Music] it was magical hard to describe in fact to this day I tried to relate the electricity associated with singing Maravich light up the court so to speak light up the audience light up the players just an incredible talent and it was Showtime when Peter was on it was Showtime there was nothing like it that I've ever seen in my lifetime the one jazz memory that I have over any other was the pass between the legs against Buffalo I'm reasonably sure that sort of was the beginning of the end of the jazz and New Orleans jazz was headed to the playoffs up by 30 some-odd points Pizza in the game in the fourth quarter and it's Showtime and Showtime turned into a tragedy it was one of the greatest passes I've ever seen 3/4 3/4 court between the legs bounce pass to I either air in the truck my memory dims they're you know hitting the guy right in the hands and then him crumpling to the floor and you had this premonition that it wasn't good he was a magician but he grew up that way you know it's legendary about how he would go to school and when he was in elementary school junior high school dribbling the ball behind his back through his legs and these were things that that very few people were doing at that time I mean that was what it was nice I wish they had the 3-point play that would have been really something if they had the 3-point play Pete Maravich has all of the points New Orleans has scored this quarter he has had 50 or more points twice this year the Knicks the Jazz won both times he's had 40 or more points six times the as one all six he has scored 30 points or better 26 times and the team's record in those games is 18 and 8 so in pistol doesn't the Jazz do it they go and he gets the layup [Applause] team basketball history for Pete Maravich tonight 60 big ones and this is the highest single game for any player in the NBA this year Tom macmillan short and the rebound taken down by Otto boar [Applause] now customers great with the best clubs also very good with doctor for you watch him get the ball up here from feeding off on this big they're filling the nice switch and that's the result to prevent poor layer here's another jump shot by Maravich no good rebound ah no more get it back to mall Howard here [Music] previous high game by any NBA player this year was 51 it happened twice both by Maravich and also by Phil Smith of the Golden State halfway through this final quarter and Maravich is tripped and he comes up holding his ankle and wouldn't it be something if this fine player got hurt in a game where he had come up with a performance like this but he got tangled up and it looked like it was with meminger to then nope I think it was a sucky burden came behind and reached in for the ball yeah it took a ridge again for the ball he gets his foot you twist his ankle a little bit coming down I don't think it's too serious I hope not any other and they're taking a look at him trainer Don sparks is out there working on the pistol and you'll watch again cook he steps on his foot here reaching here trying to get the ball right there and he turned his ankle a little bit but he's not hurt not bad [Applause] - look suffered a floor burn sliding like that - here he is at the free-throw line and he just keeps scoring on that 61 points he misses this one here he's had a good night at the foul line to his 14 of 16 from the free-throw line Dickey Burton has the ball knocked away Lonnie Shelton tries to follow can't do it Otto Moors passed out of Mokpo thieves recover it here's the pistol sees some daylight goes in the car a charging foul a pistol and that is his fifth personal foul while your wife special here make the move took a break in China make a seal on him here Tom Macmillan moving over and position tough car could have gone either way for the win against nervous Kilian is important well in football not the way being working hard on defense that time to his hunting Philippines and that ball came in and would offer by dean hands they call here looking for Aaron James inside what a basket he's got 63 he put the right spin on that ball he sure do dickie burden fires up and hits a Dickey with along with Kentucky has contributed seven points it is 113 to 91 New Orleans on top the crowd rootin for peat every time he comes up the floor Nick's trying to double-team him now Dean has the task of trying to contain him and that's a hard job today Coleman leaps into the air when he scored 65 for the Vicki Burton doing his Pistol Pete imitation 115 to 93 the Jazz are going to pickle every time down to Florida they're trying to get fixed for and now they're no longer asking him to bring the ball up the floor here's the ball [Applause] now this is some knife we've got 248 left and he does indeed have a chance to get into these 70s number eleven Rhonda Hagan into the ball game in places Coleman when Ron Femina gave me 10 minutes and resonated marvelous great shooting performance will be who gave me 50 was doing it good 66 points loose ball foul on the Haga [Applause] the fans were yelling for feet to get the ball the Hagins go fundings for it from a Hagan McCullen blocked it on the way down to 14 remaining a pistol with 66 right now here's the basket form if he can convert Marivic see look at him fight for this ball [Applause] Oh traveling crowd is going wild like you're going to ask for this ballgame he oughta call is naked and run away funny joke the qur'anic stuff 1:22 to 97 a minute 45 to go and it's just a question of how many the festival score here he is the basketball he makes the shot no good he's forcing a little bit there's no question but he's making most of them anyway and he have to be tired right now sure Nikki burden those on the drive he's out of the ballgame they called him with an offensive foul and that will call him out of the ballgame with 1:18 to go listen to the hand he gets with 68 [Applause] [Music] by a guard and the history of the octo master ball association well you gotta give it to me put on a performance [Applause] probably heard that they announced only two players that ever scored more than FIFA tonight Baylor and Chamberlain the final score 124 Cove in New Orleans the reason we honor him is not because he was such a great basketball player we honor his memory because after all of those other successes and after all of the honors and the trophies he came face to face with Jesus Christ remember Pistol Pete for work with the Lord he would want them [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Music]
