The Mystery of Praying in the Spirit

blessed and encouraged and now here is your host and teacher Perry stone I tell you where we're at right now obviously I'm under an olive tree I'm in the city of Jerusalem I'm in a beautiful park where they have excavated the city of Jerusalem not just back to the time of the destruction of the temple but the Islamic time the Crusader time the Byzantine time just surrounded by these wonderful white limestone rocks of Jerusalem you cannot hear this probably but in the background what are y'all hear drums and just people just it sounds like music and drums this is the day of bar Mitzvahed where they bring the young men who have turned 13 years of age and introducing them into manhood and so in a little bit our groups going to leave after the taping and head to the Western Wall and they're gonna see one of the most exciting celebrations in the Jewish community first time I saw it I just wanted to get out there and dance with these guys they've got the little boy on their shoulder dancing anyway that's not my message today but I did want you to know where we're at what's taking place for the next few moments on the manna-fest telecast I have a very important message that I believe is going to help a lot of you I call this message the mystery of praying in the spirit now in the scriptures in the book of Acts God gave a great promise acts 1 verse 8 through Jesus Christ that the people of God would receive power after that the Holy Ghost would come upon him and they would be witnesses in Judea in Samaria Judea Jerusalem all through the uttermost parts of the earth Acts chapter 1 verse 8 then he's tells him in Luke 2 tarry in the city of Jerusalem till they be endued with power from on high Acts chapter 2 verses 1 through 4 and when the day of Pentecost was fully come they were all in one place in one Accord and suddenly there came a sound from heaven like as a mighty rushing wind filled all the house where they were seated there appeared unto them cloven tongues like as a fire set upon each of them they were all filled with the Holy Spirit began to speak with other tongues as the spirit gave utterance now one of the Greek words used for that event is called glossolalia glossolalia and that word is to actually not just speak with tongues but it's actually to speak in the languages which were known in that day because if you read the book of Acts I believe my account is 15 or 16 major languages that were spoken in and that were understood by the Jews who were attending the feast of Pentecost when Peter and the the the disciples came out of that upper chamber which would have actually been here in the temple somewhere and they're you know they're speaking in tongues and they think they're drunk they think they're full of new wine and of course Peter begins to tell them this is a fulfillment of what was spoken by the Prophet Joel where God is going to pour out his spirit in the last days upon all flesh Acts chapter 2 is not the only place where the holy spirits poured out in Acts chapter 10 Peter goes to a Cornelius house in Caesarea he preaches the gospel here's a Jew preaching to a Gentile which is a totally unheard of thing but while Peters preaching the Holy Spirit fell on them that heard the word and they have a circumcision as many as came with Peter were astonished for on the Gentiles was also poured out the gift of the Holy Ghost for they heard them speak with tongues and magnify God we also have the revival in Samaria in the book of Acts 8 where they sent Peter and John down to lay hands on them that they might receive the Holy Spirit we have an ex nineteen many years after Pentecost Paul going to disciples and asking them have they heard of the Holy Spirit they said we've not even heard there is such a thing but Paul had his hands on them they too received the Holy Spirit spoke with tongues and prophesied we do know the Paul on the road to Damascus and his experience was baptized in the Holy Spirit there's no record and acts where he spoke with tongues but there is in 1st Corinthians 14 now let me say this this is probably a a subject that has more different diversity of opinion in the body of Christ than any other subject I'm going to share some things with you today on the manna-fest telecast that we've never publicly talked about on the telecast but we do want to show with you show you what God is doing now I've said this in my big meetings when I go to our larger meetings in different parts of the country my congregation is half Baptist in most places that's because there's more Baptists than there are human beings now the Baptist folks left me to say that the reason the Baptist's support us heavily is they love the preaching of the Bible and the word and they see us preach the word they they love to learn they love prophecy one of the things I love to watch however is when we get to what we call the use of the last night we will invite anyone who wants to be baptized in the Holy Spirit to come forward we have seen two to three hundred people baptized in the Holy Spirit with what we call the prayer language speaking in tongues is a prayer language a lot of times when I'm ministering to people about the Holy Spirit I don't even use the phrase speaking in other tongues or unknown tongues because some people are so new they don't know what you're talking about I explain it this way that the baptism of the Holy Spirit you're a vessel if you are saved you are already born of the Spirit you have the spirit with you you could not have ever come to Christ without the Holy Spirit because no man comes to the Father except the spirit draws him you already have the Holy Spirit however there is a measure called the anointing first John talks about the unction of the Holy One and the anointing that abides in us the Holy Spirit when he gives you a prayer language it is not just for you know to say words that you don't understand it is a manifestation of the power and anointing of God in you called baptism in the Holy Spirit and I like to call it a prayer language because that's the purpose of this gift now let me just give you a little bit of a background we've had 65,000 people baptized in the Holy Spirit in our meetings throughout the United States over the past let's say thirty four years of ministry I love to watch this happen because it absolutely does several things when a person receives the in filling of the spirit number one they have a greater zeal and fire for God number two they want to be around God's people God's house and the things about number three they always want to read the Bible more they always want to pray more and they always want to worship more and another thing that happens that I've noticed that 65,000 people who receive the joy level stays up they now enjoy serving the Lord my pastor friend Ron Phillips who pastors a Southern Baptist Church in Hickson Tennessee is a spirit-filled baptist pastor and I've read his wonderful books and Ron talks about how the scourge and depressed he was being a pastor having gone to college in seminary and he was ready to write a letter of resignation out to his church and quit that's how just absolutely fed up with everything he was now God baptized him in the Holy Spirit and since that time he's the jolliest fella I've ever seen he's as happy as Santa Claus on Christmas Ron Phillips is a happy man and one of my closest friends I've got in all the world there was a day in which the charismatic were considered odd the Pentecostals were considered odd the Baptist stayed to themself the Methodists stayed to themselves but God in the last day said he pours it on all flesh and the reason he pours it out here's what he's doing he's pouring this all in one cup you didn't hear me he's pouring this all in one cup we've all had our little cups and our little ideas and I found that when I started hanging around Baptist people I believe I believed a lot of things they were teaching that I hadn't been taught they started hanging around the Full Gospel people and found out you know what they've got stuff that we weren't taught we have to learn from each other we're going to make a mistake if all we do is sit with our group and listen to our own little theologians when when none of us have a solo you know Scripture solo truth we all have to glean from each other charismatic SAR very strong in worship we need that the Baptist's are very strong and understanding grace and water baptism we need that the full gospel people are very strong in the gifts of the Spirit we need that can you imagine if everybody could understand each other and get together what would happen now what I want to share with you is something that has changed my life over the years it's a verse from Romans 8 now in Romans chapter a first of all let me say that my great-grandfather he actually was the man who raised my grandmother Lucy rexrode his name was ro Rexroat he was a pioneer minister he worked for the Secret Service and he came into the move of God became a minister during the time of the depression under law heartache started churches especially in West Virginia my grandfather who married Lucy was John baver she became from Lucy Rexroat - Lucy bhava now grandma baby and granddaddy Ava granddad especially was Italian his father Pete baby came from Italy John and Joe there were brothers and of course John would later become my mother's father before he was married 17 years of age they went to a Methodist revival where rx Road was preaching ro rexrode preached on the baptism of the holy spirit John and Joe were both baptized in the Holy Spirit I'm abbreviating the story when they came home my granddad was speaking in tongues and my Italian great-grandfather his daddy knew those boys couldn't talk a language and he came down there and I wish I could I found a tape the other day in 1959 of my great granddad Pete Weber testifying in an open-air meeting he I can't I can't do the accent but he said he said of my goddddd as a preacher Dunn said of my boys are crazy I'm going to get a gun they're gonna kill at a preacher said of my boys are crazy he actually was going to get a gun my granddad said and go down and shoot the preachers for making his boys crazy what happened was Pete however ended up getting deathly sick laying on a bed and John and Joe decided to ask the Pentecostal preachers to go pray for him and they made sort of an agreement with him if we can pray for you and God can heal you will you serve the Lord I servant of God if he can raise me up laid hands on him God raised him up off his death bed he got the baptism of the Holy Spirit I never will forget this we used to go to church at my grandma's church and Gorman Maryland Pete would wear a black hat and a black suit all the time just that's all he wore and you'd say how was the service today and if he'd go to revival or something he told no good no good other people don't have a no victory my god the people have a no victory then order they know a shout they know worship for God today if they don't know what a God to do for me I've got to Hue me he's go back about how God healed him and baptized him in the Holy Spirit I always said he dropped the shout of the drop of the head he dropped the hat if you let him and then so he could shout he was Italian he was Catholic so a mom saw the family through Pete they came from Italy so that's a Catholic background on my father's side of the family they were basically were Mountain heathen and my dad was saved and baptized in the Holy Spirit I'm going to show you the verses not what I'm saying is I come from three generations of people who are spirit filled people but this is the verse I absolutely love ready here we go verse 16 the spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit that we are the children of God now how does the spirit bear witness with our spirit here's what happens I have seen people that I did not know never saw him in my life and I knew they were believers when I got near him because their spirit bore witness with my how many ever had that happen raise your hand you see happens to everybody but when the Holy Spirit gives you the evidence of the prayer language that's the point you know not look I'm saved without that you understand I don't have to have that to be saved but to bear witness with what you are how do we put it this way how did Peter know in Acts chapter 10 the Lord had accepted the Gentiles because when they spoke in tongues see Cornelius could assist I received Christ stand up family let's receive Christ Peter could have gone back and said they receive Christ the Apostles would have said I don't think so this is for us salvations for the Jews the moment they spoke in tongues Peter said who was I that could resist what God did so in other words it was the manifestation of the Spirit that let the Jews know that the Gentiles had a new covenant with God so what happens is when the Holy Spirit comes in you it bears witness with your spirit that you're a child of God there's just something about I can't explain it but that does happen one of my favorite verses now I'm gonna read this to you we know that all things work together for the good of them that love God and call two corners purpose how many of you have ever heard that quoted raise your hand all things work together now you know what I want to tell you there's a condition for that to happen let me say it again there's a condition let me read to you the condition for all things to work together for your good because I'm gonna say something if you're flat out of God's will acting like a fool all things aren't gonna work together for your good and if you're out there getting drunk on Friday night and taking drugs and you end up having problems in your body you're gonna have to do some heavy praying to pull yourself out of that situation you see if people have to pray for you but you can't take that verse by itself don't take it out of the context here's what let me read what's before it likewise the spirit help with our infirmities that Greek word infirmities is weaknesses of the mind the body the soul in the spirit for we know not what we should pray for as we ought now let me stop for a moment ask a question how many of you have ever wanted to pray about something honest didn't know which way to go with it raise your hand keep your hand up keep your hand up alright now this is what it's talking about here you don't know what to pray for I know who to pray for the who is no problem with me I just sometimes don't know am I supposed to pray for this to happen that to happen to back to heaven here's what happens we don't know what to pray for is we but the spirit itself maketh intercession for us with groanings and one translation says an articulate speech which can't be uttered in other words it comes out of you you don't understand what you're saying let me ask you this has anybody ever just got along with God it was so burden you couldn't say words and this is like oh Jesus oh God alright this was talking about here for he that searches the hearts knows what is the mind of the Spirit because he makes intercession for the Saints according to the will of God then we know all things work together for the good of them that love God and there's the key the key is if you want all things to work together for your good if you and all things to work together for your good then what you're gonna have to do is you're gonna have to learn how to pray in the spirit and let the Holy Spirit find the mind of God let me tell you what praying in the spirit does I've learned this over the years number one when I pray in the spirit and I allow the prayer language of the Holy Spirit to work within a Paul taught that in a church setting you should teach the people in the language of the people years ago I'm you know I remember going to churches years ago and they were just really good people simple minded people but you know they just kind of spoke in tongues out when they wanted to that's not orderly when you're preaching in a church service you have to preach with your understanding so that people understand Paul said I speak with tongues more than you all but he didn't do it necessarily in a church setting he did in private but he said when you come into the church setting you can speak to yourself and to God okay so that's that's absolutely you know that happens all the time in our meetings but he said if a person speaks out loud by themselves where the church hears they have to have an interpreter now let me give you before I get into the idea of interpretation let me tell you a couple things here number one when you pray in the spirit you pray the mind of God number two when you pray in the spirit you pray the will of God alright number three when you pray in the spirit you're praying the protection of God I was on a volcano this I won't go into the whole story hanging on the edge of a volcano about to fall off at the bottom in Oregon many years ago and my dad when I got back said okay son what happened to you I said that way talking about what happened to me he said you were in danger I said what do you mean I was in danger he said I felt it on a throne Thursday at six o'clock I told my I told your mother he's in danger he's near death and my dad prayed one hour for me driving a car through Knoxville to Cleveland just pray mama said it looked like he act like he was dying he was praying so hard listen I said well dad that's amazing I was hanging on the edge of a volcano getting ready to roll down at the bottom of the cliff on some some rock and I found a stick about four inches long and I hit the ground and long story folks behind the way and went across that extinct volcano up in Oregon and made it to the other side and he said well that's odd what time was it I said I think it was about three o'clock when I started falling and I caught myself well he said that doesn't make sense at six o'clock over here well three hours difference come on somebody see my dad was sensitive enough to hear the Holy Spirit say Perry is in trouble he is in danger and so when he when God told him that I was in danger he began to pray praying in the spirit for protection is very significant because anytime now I want everybody to hear this because this is something everybody here needs to learn when you get a burden and it's not normal you're not having a bad day you don't feel sick you don't have the flu it's a normal day and all of a sudden you are gripped with a weight a burden is a weight and your grip with this weight in your spirit whatever you do that's the moment well this is one of the things my dad taught me in prayer he said when you feel the burden son and it's so heavy you've got to get alone with God I don't know why sense this my secretary Gina she hates to see me get this way but 10 times at least I will get a burden of death I know when one of my closest friends are going to die seven to ten days before and I said Gina it's on me I've got to go home I can't function I can't eat I can't think I can't steady I feel like I'm dying on the inside and she says oh no don't tell me I said yeah it's the death burden seven to ten days somebody very dear passes away so here's the thing you've got to learn to follow the burden and you've got to learn to pray when you sense this burden upon you now another thing that I want to tell you about which is very significant here talking about praying in the spirit and praying the mind of God has to do with the idea of interpretation now when I say interpreting a message in tongues I used to think because I grew up again around Full Gospel folks who are saint of God would stand up and speak in the prayer language and then through a gift of the Spirit someone would interpret an interpretation is not a translation a translation would be like the Bible where you take a Greek or Hebrew word and you find the exact match to that word at an interpretation in public depends upon sometimes the personality of the people let me give an example some Sain of God may stand up and say the Lord would say to you today someone else must stand up and say the Spirit of God speaks this to you today they're giving you the same general idea but it doesn't have to be a direct translation an interpretation is the thought and interpretation in the spirit is the concept or the idea of what the Holy Spirit is saying through that person now here's a nugget that I want to give you boy I wish I had more time on this when you are praying in the spirit many times you will have a focus of what you're praying for in your mind you give your flowing with your mind this is what I've learned all of a sudden in the middle of your prayer you're going off here and thinking about someone else or a different need what I have discovered is God is quickening your mind to what you're praying about I used to think it was a distraction because I would start off praying for someone or praying for something and then I would be gonna be talking thinking about my son everybody thinking about my dad they've been thinking about a meeting over here and I realize what the Lord is doing he's interpreting into my mind that thought doesn't have to tell me everything but so next time that you're praying in the spirit and your thoughts began to change and I'm not talking about you're thinking about goofy stuff like the meatball sandwich and the refrigerator that you just you're hungry for that's just the flesh but if your thoughts change many times you are actually interpreting in the spirit the Spirit is interpreting back to your mind the things the Holy Spirit's saying you know I tell you one of my favorite subjects is the Holy Spirit and I'm gonna say this I have never said this on manna-fest before but our partners who have known me for 25 to 30 years know this God has used us nine times to speak to foreign people in their language and I didn't even know the language Cartersville Georgia a while back the girl from Columbia came to the altar and I felt this strong anointing a different and on account I started praying for her in the spirit list of this I called her name I told her she would be going back home to Columbia I told her she was going to go back filled up and she'd been praying about going back home and she'd been praying about it not going back empty she wanted to be full and she interpreted everything I said now I didn't know her I hadn't met never met I hadn't seen that happening that gift operate that's called the gift of divers tongues and the interpretation wasn't needed because she got the message see it's like under their Pentecost they understood the language and what an interpretation needed so let me encourage you these are signs and wonders God is doing you were raised in a church that doesn't believe that I understand that your traditions doesn't believe I understand it but can I encourage you on your own at home seek the Lord and ask him to fill you with his power this is the last days God said he's going to do it so why not accept it I'm excited about the prayer book that's
