There might be favorites coming into each Olympics, but with all these athletes at the top of their game, there's no telling what might happen. Let's take a moment to marvel at some of the unexpected victories from Tokyo 2020, as well as some surprising demonstrations of Olympic spirit. READY? JAPANESE OST LOOKING BACK / MOVING FORWARD UNEXPECTED WINS The Olympics are where we crown the best of the best, which makes a tie perhaps the most unexpected result of all. But that's just what happened in the men's high jump. Italy's Gianmarco Tamberi and Qatar's Mutaz Essa Barshim both cleared the bar at 2.37 meters. But when neither made it past the next height in three attempts, they showed the ultimate in international brotherhood and agreed to share the top spot. Maybe friendship is more valuable than gold after all. JAPANESE OST HIGH JUMP And speaking of gold, before Tokyo, Estonia had never received an Olympic fencing medal. So when Katrina Lehis beat Korea's Choi In-jeong in the finals, it was a seriously big deal for Estonians everywhere, including President Kersti Kaljulaid, who called Lehis to personally congratulate her on the historic victory. And for those who tune in for the upsets, the 110-meter men's hurdles was the ultimate reward. With team USA's Grant Holloway holding the lead the whole way, the race seemed all but decided. At least until Hansle Parchment flipped the script, mounting a late push that gave Jamaica one of its four golds and one of its nine medals overall. Truly kids, it ain't over till it's over. OLYMPIC SPIRIT Next up, the Olympic spirit was in the building, or rather the skate park, when a pair of young women came together to lift up one of their own. Japan's Misugo Okamoto fell early in her final run, costing her a shot at the medal. But rather than revel in their competitor's misfortune, fellow skaters Poppy Olsen and Bryce Wettstein hoisted Okamoto onto their shoulders and carried her off, reminding us what the Olympics are really all about. No less touching was the shot put trio of Ryan Crouser, Joe Kovacs and Tom Walsh, who found themselves standing together in the exact same podium lineup from Rio 2016. Reunited and it feels so good. JAPANESE OST SHOT PUT Our next stirring display of camaraderie comes on the badminton court. While Asian countries have long held dominion in the sport, this year saw Denmark's Viktor Axelsen beat China's Chen Long to bring home the first European gold in over 20 years. But no sour grapes here, Long and Axelsen capped things off with a warm embrace that set a new bar for friendships everywhere. Hug it out. Surprise is the name of the Olympic game and Tokyo 2020 was no exception. Which moment shocked you, shook you up, or showed you that we're stronger together? And who are you pulling for in Beijing 2022? LOOKING BACK / MOVING FORWARD SUBSCRIBE
