this is not a real scoreboard but this is on October 7th 1916 Georgia Tech absolutely decimated Cumberland 222 to Z it was a Beatdown of mythical proportion to run up the score like this seems diabolical prior to that game Georgia Tech's coach John Heisman the one the trophy was named after was out for Revenge the year prior Georgia Tech's baseball team which was also coached by Heisman was beaten down by Cumberland 22 nothing now rumors were that they had Pro players playing on that Cumberland team which would have gave them a massive advantage and understandably so this would piss off any coach but man did Heisman take it to another level the year following that 22 nothing beat down on the baseball diamond these two schools football teams were set to play the issue however was that Cumberland discontinued their football program right before the season well Mr Heisman was not going to let that slide Heisman offered to pay Cumberland $500 and all their travel expenses to come to Atlanta but if they refused to fulfill their obligations to play the game Heisman was going to threaten legal action there must have been some sort of scheduling rule at the time that dealt with this so basically Cumberland who no longer had an organized football team sent off a group of Frat Boys and law students to go play Georgia Tech who was one of the top college football teams in the country at the time after one quarter Tech LED 63 nothing they were scoring at will while Cumberland consistently turned the ball over a possession that ended in a three and out with a punt was considered a success at halftime the score was 126 to0 and according to Cumberland historian Frank Burns Heisman told this to his team at halftime quote we're ahead but you just can't tell what those Cumberland players have up their sleeves they may spring a Sur surprise be alert men Beyond Revenge there might have been another Factor as to why Heisman was doing this at the Time Sports Riders tended to Value winning margin and writers were the one who decided the quote unquote mythical national champion and Heisman hated this fact so perhaps he was using this game to make a point as well as getting revenge on Cumberland now because of how bad the Beatdown was by halftime both teams agreed to lower the quarter lengths for the second half but just barely and like a psychopathic older brother Tech put up another 54 points in the third and 42 in the fourth the final score arrived at 222 to0 which feels like it was the plan all along considering the baseball score the year prior the yardage disparity was absolutely ridiculous Cumberland had 15 turnovers while Tech had zero of course and 32 rushing touchdowns oddly enough there wasn't a single first down in that game Tech on every set of downs scored while Cumberland did not get one first down cuz they couldn't move the ball in fact sports writer Grantland rice wrote The Following quote cumberland's greatest individual play of the game occurred when fullback Allen circled right end for a 6-yard loss now there have been some crazy blowouts in the history of college football but nothing even comes close to this game it was so legendary that there's a book written about it and also the YouTuber John Boyce made a video years back about it which goes more into depth and is worth checking out for the sake of this video let's check out some other unbreakable college football records in 1939 Texas Tech played centinary college in a game dubbed one of the weirdest games in NCAA history due to horrific weather conditions both teams failed to advance the ball running or passing which led them to punting and punting a lot at the end of the contest the final score tallied a total of zero points while both teams combined for 77 punts 77 punts that's closer to Australian football than to American football at one point the teams punted 22 plays in a row perhaps even more than the first game I mentioned you got to wonder why they didn't call this game I mean it probably should have been canceled if the weather was that bad and by halftime You' think they would have just agreed to call it a wash anyways this game had more NCAA single game records set in it than any other game in NCAA history all of which still remain unbroken to this day here's another weird game back in 1944 NC State could not move the ball if their life depended on it they failed to get a single first down and only amounted to just 10 offensive yards while Virginia amassed 200 yards despite this NC State won the game 13 to Z making this the fewest yards gained by a winning team how is this possible well Virginia failed to convert on any of their drives plus they fumbled the ball eight times two of which NC State recovered In The End Zone I think Iowa at some point saw this game whether it was a video or just reading about it and they felt inspired and built their whole identity around it in almost any other circumstance a team that struggles this much offensively is going to lose and that's just what Penn State's defense did to opponents in 1947 that year Penn State allowed just 153 rushan yards for the entire season including holding Syracuse to minus 107 rushing yards the nitty Lions only gave up four points a game that season too bad they couldn't beat SMU in the Cotton Bowl similarly Duke in 1938 and Tennessee in 1939 didn't give up a single point the entire season that was until their bowl games both Tennessee and Duke played USC in the Rose Bowl and their Seasons ended on not only giving up the first points of the season but but also a loss according to my research I could only find one team who didn't give up a single point all season and that was Michigan in 1901 this team was insane they averaged 50 points a game and they didn't give up a single point then in the first ever Rose Bowl which wasn't called that at the time but it eventually became the rose bow they played Stanford and the game was so bad that stamford's Captain asked if they could quit the contest in the fourth quarter it was so brutal that the roseb committee who sanctioned that game decided not to have another one for almost two decades Michigan had an even more dominant winning margin The Following season but unfortunately their defense fell off as they gave up 12 total points all season and six the season after that from 1901 to 1904 they didn't lose a single game in those 44 games and only gave up 40 total points now obviously this is a completely different era and almost unrecognizable compared to today considering the first forward pass hadn't even been made and also I'm not sure how tough these opponents were I don't think cam mazou Physicians and surgeons and American Medical ever developed into any sort of Powerhouse what a weird time in football history continuing on the theme of dominant teams Georgia recently went on a 29 game win streak which in today's day and age especially in the SEC is pretty insane and what's crazy is that's not even close to the greatest streak in college football history back in the 50s Oklahoma rattled off 47 straight victories which somehow only won them two national titles the closest any team has gotten to that streak was Miami in the early 2000s when they won 34 in a row because of the difference in eras you could make a case that what Miami pulled off was more impressive that 01 Miami team is considered by many as the greatest college football team of all time all right so I got this helmet here which is signed by a bunch of the members of the 01 Miami Hurricanes team and once you start reading the names that this team had you begin to understand why they were so dominant I'm hurt dog don't ask me if I'm all right hell no names like Frank Gore Ed Reed Andre Johnson Clinton pis Jeremy Shocky and Vince will Fork overall that roster produced a record 38 NFL draft picks try beating that in college football 25 Dynasty mode speaking of that game like many of you I can't wait to play I mean that was my main childhood game growing up it's one of the biggest reasons why I became passionate about football and one of the aspects of the game that I loved as a kid was scrolling through the old records and trying to break those so if you're anything like me perhaps this next section will inspire you to go do the same to this point we've covered a lot of Team specific records let's transition to individuals I'll give you the career single season single game and single quarter records that stood out to me the most career passing yards by any player was set by Case Keenum with 19,27 passing yards that's over 2,000 yards ahead of second place this will probably never be broken considering the time period we live in with transferring and going to the NFL early and all that forward defensive record in 1988 Alabama's Derek Thomas piled up 27 sacks only three players have even broken 18 since 2000 and Thomas only played in 11 games so at the very least that sacks game number seems Untouchable what's also wild about Derek Thomas was 2 years later in the NFL he set the all-time record for sacks in a game with seven rest in peace to one of the goats of the game for the single season records the craziest one to me goes to Barry Sanders and his absurd 273.5 yards from scrimmage per game that included four games with over 300 total yards that's a feat no other running back has ever eclipsed in their her entire career and Barry did it in just 10 games now this next stat I admit is a little obscure but I think it's worth mentioning and it's another Barry Sanders record so I don't know if any of you knew this but Barry had a brother who also played at the same time as him his brother's name was Byron and these two together in 1988 set the record for the most Russian yards gained by two brothers in the same season Barry obviously carried most of the load as he had 2600 yards while his brother Byron at Northwestern had about a thousand the likelihood that this record will fall is extremely unlikely for the single game records how about a 99 yard punt honestly this is probably the only technically unbreakable record in this video as you only can tie that Mark there's no footage of the 99 yard College punt but I'll show this NFL one to give an [Music] idea for another crazy single game record Johnny Jackson had three pick sixes in a game back in 1987 on the flip side the worst single game record individually goes to John Reeves who versus Auburn in 1969 threw nine interceptions at some point you'd think the coach would try somebody else I mean come on but maybe the backups were much worse who knows here's another crazy one Nate Burleson back in the early 2000s versus San Jose State had over 300 receiving yards and crazy enough no touchdown how is this possible his 2001 game log is just bizarre as a whole he only had two touchdowns all season and that huge game that he had was nearly half his total season yards the week before he had zero catches and the week after just four for 23 yards of course I can't forget to talk about the most productive college football game of all time a 2016 matchup between Texas Tech and Oklahoma this was a showdown for the ages between Baker Mayfield and Patrick mahom these two teams combined for over 1,700 yard just a little bit different than that first Texas Tech game I mentioned Not only was the performance of these two quarterbacks incredible but the added drama of Baker playing against his former team only added to the legend now momes in that game set the NCAA record with over 800 total yards which is only possible in the Big 12 but an even crazier performance happened decades prior in a game between Houston and SMN you in the first quarter of that game Andre wear Houston's quarterback threw for 340 yards and five touchdowns this put him on Pace for over, 1300 yards where would accumulate a total of 519 yards in the first half before his coach was like all right let's chill out on this one and he sat where for the second half they still went on to win that game 95 to 21 that's a 74o disparity an absolute Massacre now imagine a team triple that winning margin doesn't sound real right well that's just what Georgia Tech did to Cumberland back in 1916 [Music]
