The Most OVERPOWERED Item In Minecraft Speedrunning!

hello you absolute legends minecraft allows you to craft almost 400 different items but which is the best you'd think this question would be hard to answer i mean there are so many different situations you can find yourself in it should be impossible to determine a single item that offers the most value but no it's not a hard question to answer at all it's the boat it's not even close the humble boat is an amazing tool and offers the most versatile collection of uses of any craftable item in the game in this video we will learn why the boat is so incredible granted i am a speedrunner and this is a speedrunning channel so my opinion is probably a bit biased here when it comes to speedrunning not only has the boat had a monumental impact on the various strategies speedrunners use but it's also just used a lot in general even in places you would least expect and the greatest thing about the boat aside from its countless benefits is how cheap it is all you need is five planks of wood and the world is your oyster today we will explore some of the most amazing ways speedrunners and minecraft players in general use the boat to their advantage and i think that by the end of this video not only will you agree that the boat is undoubtedly the most overpowered item in minecraft but from this point on you'll never leave home again without one i hope you enjoy now legends before springs to mind is the boat's ability to travel across water on water the boat moves at eight meters per second which is about one meter per second faster than sprint jumping it also doesn't deplete your hunger which means you can boat for thousands of meters before needing to eat in speedrunning oceans are really important biomes that facilitate a ton of different strategies they contain features like shipwrecks and monuments which give gold and iron both being necessary resources they also house magma ravines which provide a quick and reliable method of entering the nether early and it's not just the early game where oceans are important either ocean exposed strongholds are incredibly beneficial allowing players to find the end portal much faster than the standard buried stronghold would allow given the reliance on ocean strategies you'll find that most top speed runs contain some form of boat travel but ironically where boats shine the most is inside the nether where water can't exist at all on ice boats move fantastically fast and one of the best ways to get around in the nether is on blue ice highways where you can reach speeds of 70 meters per second which is basically the fastest realistic travel speed you can hope to achieve in this dimension boats can also help us go up both ladders are really efficient ways to climb that are much faster than normal ladders or water if you want to get really fancy you can even incorporate boats into much more elaborate elevated designs as well another useful feature of boats is their ability to trap mobs and this spawns a ton of different strategic uses first and foremost for everyday use you can place a boat defensively if you find yourself in a tricky situation with several mobs on your tail or you can use it offensively if you want to kill mobs easily this works wonders with endermen who like to teleport around when you try to directly engage them trapping and killing endermen in speedruns is particularly useful because of their ability to drop pearls which are not only a fast way to travel but they are also extremely good at helping you navigate otherwise impossible terrain hostile mobs are not the only useful thing boats can trap though trapping peg lens is a requirement in certain strategies at present the fastest way to attain enough pearls to enter the end is through trading with peglens which is generally done in bastions because they contain not only piglens to barter with but also plenty of gold but there is also another strategy that involves attaining gold before entering the nether by finding a monument every monument contains 8 gold blocks and as long as you know where to dig they are pretty easy to collect with the gold gathered from monuments you can bypass the need for a bastion entirely all you need to do is find a couple of stray piglens ideally near a fortress which is where you'll be farming blaze rods speedrunners will do something called task overlapping which is where they will simultaneously work on two goals at the same time which is obviously faster than doing one after the other piglet trading takes a while especially if you're only trading with two so standing around waiting for that to happen would be a huge time loss instead speed runners will trap two piglets in a boat feed them gold and then go farm blazers for rods trapping the piglens in a boat is a must because if you don't do this the piglens will despawn or wander off making this strategy impossible after collecting enough rods the speedrunner will return and the piglets will be right where they left them surrounded by all of the items they traded keeping mobs in one place is one way to use boats but moving them from place to place is also critical on the 1st of march 2021 the speedrunner at doi pengu beat the existing world record in the 1.9 to 1.15 category by over two minutes by implementing something called hostage strats in the earlier versions of minecraft piglet bartering for ender pearls isn't available so players relied on trading with villagers but this requires you to get very lucky with the location of villages as you needed to find them on day 2 which was already 10 minutes into the run with hostage strats you kidnap a villager at the beginning of the run by trapping them in a boat mobs cannot leave boat until the boat is destroyed so unfortunately for the villager they are stuck for as long as we need the strategy required an early village next to an ocean to work which was pretty rare but it's very fast the hostage would then be dragged along while shipwrecks were looted and monuments mined for gold then on day 2 after coming back from the nether with enough blaze rods we no longer have to find a village because we already took a piece of one with us now a quick shout out to a very cute outdated strategy known as boat cow looting monuments for gold is a bit risky due to the elder guardians within that inflict upon you mining fatigue if you have no way to cure it mining fatigue will end your speed run as it leaves you essentially useless nowadays players get around this problem by lowering the render distance to despawn the elder guardians giving them much more time to lose the gold but before this strategy was figured out you always had an 80 chance of getting inflicted with mining fatigue mining fatigue can be cured with a bucket of milk so players would haul a cow onto the back of a boat so they always had a fresh supply of metal candy while traveling the treacherous oceans by this point boats have already proven themselves to be very useful but now the fun really begins let's take a look at how boats have revolutionized the world of jumping and falling when it comes to parkour boats are amazing the key mechanic that makes a lot of the insane jumps you see performed with boats is that the player will take no fall damage while inside this is because while the boat itself might be falling the player's velocity technically doesn't really increase speedrunners especially will take advantage of this by falling from great heights while inside of a boat which is obviously far quicker than finding a safe passage in the overworld you can use a bucket and water to escape fall damage rather easily but given that water can't be placed in the nether it's here where boats are the most useful nether terrain is very unpredictable and dangerous often providing a player with no easy options to progress but thankfully the trusty boat is always there to lend a hand there are two main ways you can use a boat to fall safely the first and easiest is to place the boat on an edge of a cliff get in and slowly creep off the other method is much faster much riskier but also much more stylish here we simply leap off the cliff and try to place and enter the boat in the several frames before we hit the ground this is the technique used by dream in the infamous boat clutch boats aren't just good for a falling straight down either you can use them to cover a pretty good distance in the air as well if you've ever watched one of dream's manhunts you'll see him abuse boat fall mechanics everywhere if you want to cover more horizontal distance you can repeatedly exit and enter the boat while it's falling each time you get out the fall velocity resets giving you much more air time to cover more distance this requires some mechanical ability and it is possible to screw it up there is another way to do it though that is also really cool which is called the fire boat generally if you set a boat on fire it will break however if it touches fire for only a single frame it will just catch fire you can then enter the boat and start to fall each time the boat gets damaged by the fire its full velocity resets again giving it more air time and covering more distance if you want to be even more legit you can finish your fire boat maneuver with a jump boats can also provide you with a few extra blocks of distance by using them as a grappling hook as long as you can place the boat and reach it you can enter it even if you weren't going to make the distance in normal circumstances you can only jump across a gap that is 4 blocks wide using a boat you can get across a gap 9 or even possibly 10 blocks wide you can even use this mechanic to do some really cool tricks like falling off a cliff and then using the boat to grab onto a ledge below finally another cool jump is of course the lava run again another technique that was made popular after being showcased in a dream manhunt when a boat is placed on lava it gets destroyed almost instantly but there is barely enough time to use it as a platform to jump off before it disappears by using multiple boats you can literally run across lava now let's take a quick look at some of the more creative ways that speedrunners use the boat to their advantage boats can put you into what's called a crawl state if you need to tunnel through a wall generally you'll need to break two blocks in order to fit through as that's the size of the player so if a wall is five blocks thick you'll have to break 10 blocks but it's possible to cut that in half by entering a crawl state so you fit into an area only one block in size in the overworld this is normally done by using water but again in the nether that's not possible so a boat can be used this crawl mechanic is starting to weave itself into various new bastion strategies as well where it can save a few seconds by minimizing the amount of blocks that need to be mined it doesn't seem like it should be possible but you can place a boat up to seven blocks above you and then enter the boat allowing you to climb up this saves on the amount of blocks you need which is a valuable resource in speedrunning if you thought boats were already cheap requiring only five planks they become even cheaper when you realize you can get most of that back generally if you break a boat it will just revert into a collectible state but if a boat falls from very specific heights it will shatter breaking into three planks and two sticks the heights are really weird numbers being 12 13 49 51 111 and 114 blocks high there's a much more efficient method though which is by clipping the boat into a block by placing it on the very top pixel of this side if you get in after placing it it will shatter giving you back the resources this might not seem like a big deal but surprisingly wood is a very scarce resource in world record pace speed runs in ideal circumstances which is to enter the nether with a bastion and a fortress nearby and to then place a portal leading straight into a stronghold the only time you'll encounter wood is at the very start of a run but at this stage you only have wood tools so collecting wood is really slow needing to collect less at the beginning of a speed run is very helpful another resource that can be scarce in speed runs is food and sometimes hunger is a really big problem when players don't have enough food and they're about to hit the point where they can no longer sprint they will perform what's called a hunger reset this is done by resetting their spawn point with a bed getting into a self-dug grave and killing themselves when they respawn their hunger bar will be refilled one way to end your life is by setting yourself on fire but that's rather slow ender pearls have been the primary choice in the past but pearls are incredibly valuable so you don't really want to waste them here recently a new method of hunger resetting was found by performing a boat clip which takes away 4.5 hearts it's just as fast as pearls and doesn't cost anything to do in pre 1.9 version speed runs there is no piglet bartering or villager trading for ender pearls so the best method to get them is by killing endermen over the years speedrunners have refined this process to an incredible extent creating massive towers that they use to lure in endermen forcing them to drop down a really deep hole the only issue is that once you've dug the hole it's hard to get back out towering back out takes time but a pretty genius method was discovered by using you guessed it a boat the crawl mechanic wasn't yet built into the game in these early versions so players would carve out a one block high section at the base of the hole and place inside a boat when they enter the boat the player gets suffocated because their upper body ends up inside the rock when they die the items are also trapped inside of the rock and in an attempt to escape they get pushed upwards all the way to the surface at which point they can be recollected i could keep going on about the boat for days but let's end on a particularly glitchy note boats can be used to clip straight through walls and ceilings don't ask me how it works it just does you can even use them to get above the bedrock in the nether boats are incredibly broken but who would want it any other way i will stop here but believe me this isn't an exhaustive list by any means the boat is one of the cheapest but also one of the most versatile and undoubtedly the most overpowered item in the game next time you're out adventuring especially if you're in the early game make sure to take a boat it will always come in handy if you agree with my opinion that the boat is
