hey guys nikolai here video games have become a very profitable industry and today the most common way for developers to monetize their games is to create and sell skins these are entirely cosmetic items that offer a new look to your character and although skins are very straightforward some people are incredibly passionate about in-game skins so in today's video we'll be taking a look at 5 times skin releases didn't go as planned but before we get started today's video is sponsored by audible odds are once upon a time you've come across a book thought it was interesting but remembered that you don't actually read books because instead you play league of legends or you're just simply busy reading takes time however speaking of time frequently people look back at the time they spent gaming and think damn i could have done something productive with all that time and with audible you kind of can while you're spending all your time playing video games you could at the same time be learning about financial literacy diving into a new fantasy story that you never got the chance to read or literally anything else as audible has a catalog of over 200 000 audiobooks for you to choose from you can get started with a free trial of audible today by going to audible.com nikolai or texting nikolai to 500 500 now with that being said let's jump into the video beginning with number five we get things started with the delayed controversy that followed the release of striker lucian this skin was released on june 18th 2014 in celebration of that year's fifa world cup it was also released alongside four other soccer themed skins however the only skin to cause a problem was lucians this is because the skin shared a very strong resemblance to the retired professional soccer player edgar davids although initially this wasn't a problem edgar actually showed appreciation toward riot for the skin sharing similarities with him but this became a news story when one year after sending this tweet edgar would go on to write a letter to riot requesting the company to stop using his appearance and then four months later riot's lawyers would end up filing a defense against edgar's claim but in the end riot lost the lawsuit resulting in having to reveal how much money the skin generated and a portion of that revenue would have to be given to edgar though despite getting a nice payday he did have to deal with a bunch of angry gamers in his mansions who were mad at him for suing riot but believe it or not this story isn't quite unique nowadays a while back a model from kazakhstan tried bringing legal action to riot by accusing them of using her likeness and just recently the ex-girlfriend of an ex-riot employee came out and said that she would seek legal action against riot because the champion seraphine was clearly based on her though unlike edgar's case these didn't result in anything moving along with number four the draven draven skin a skin released on april 1st 2016 and what's unique about this skin is that it's one of the few skins to release with its own variation of summoner's rift however this skin release came with immense disappointment from the community because prior to 2016 the game mode earth was exclusively an april fools event so imagine everyone's disappointment when april 1st comes around and instead of earth mode players received draven mode this was basically regular league of legends but everything had a draven head and people didn't like it thanks riot this is so much better than earth said no one ever draven day more like disappointment day and to extend their disappointments players came to the conclusion that draven mode was actually a prank and later on riot would enable earth mode this idea was further supported by riot disabling the draven mode on the second day of the event but no earth mode never came it was simply just a full three days of draven mode draven now next up with number three this is probably the most degenerate thing i'll talk about on this channel but here we go number three frostblade aurelia this issue didn't come from the skin itself though but instead the rework of her splash art you see with this splash art her bottom half was no longer in center frame making a lot of players quite simply devastated irelia's frost but has been cropped out in her loading screen splash art [Music] riot hog everything you need to fix this but after a lot of outrage from the community riot went in and adjusted the splash art next up something a little more serious for number two we remember custom skins odds are a majority of you watching have never used a custom skin these were downloadable skins made by the community that you could install and then they would replace your champion's base skin for free so instead of playing boring old lee sin you could be playing goku the catch here is that only you would see your skin other players would still see regular lee sin when you're playing goku and for this reason riot was a little lenient on allowing players to do this though obviously they probably weren't a fan of players using these skins instead of buying official skins which is why i'm bringing it up in this video because eventually riot did decide to end the use of custom skins in 2016 wright changed the way their files operated therefore now going in there to change anything like adding a custom skin would result in your account likely being banned this of course made some players very upset because basically overnight the entire custom skin community got killed there used to be a lot of creative skins being made by the community and even entire youtube channels creating content out of these skins but regardless of how you felt about the situation it didn't matter at the end of the day riot is completely in the right to tell their users that they can no longer edit their game files especially since the file changes were for security reasons either way i want to say rest in peace to all the glorious custom skins that will never walk the rift again now ending the video with number one gun goddess misfortune arguably the most controversial skin release by riot games so let's get into it this is gun goddess misfortune a skin released on march 22 2018 however this wasn't just a regular skin this was an ultimate skin these are generally supposed to always provide something new that no skin has ever done before but the catch is that all ultimate skins are valued at 3250rp which is equivalent to like thirty dollars depending on how you buy your rp but imagine spending money on a free-to-play game but alright back to miss fortune like i was saying ultimate skins are supposed to be a very high quality product which is providing something entirely new at this time there had only been four other ultimate skins so expectations were kind of high and once the skin was revealed many players were disappointed by riot even calling this an ultimate skin many and i mean many reddit threads were made which were just flat out shifting on the skin's entire existence because although you're paying 30 dollars for this skin her four forms visually looked really similar and many described them as just being different chromas as the main visual differences were just the colors but riot did listen to the player feedback and before the release of the skin they cut the price from 3250 to 2775 which still didn't satisfy a lot of people the reddit post kept coming and people kept saying crazy things to the point where a year later the lead skin producer at riot games revealed that this situation led to her eventually quitting her job she said on twitter the ordeal did ultimately result in me leaving riot so i guess that's a win for the people who demanded i get fired and being honest with you while i was researching and putting everything together for this video most of the reactions i found to this skin were pretty positive the youtube trailers were well received videos on the skin were positive to go even further i'd bet that most of you watching probably had no idea that there was ever any drama attached to this skin this to me was genuinely a major case of the vocal minority being really loud because honestly if you follow the league of legends subreddit you will know that no one is ever entirely pleased by a skin release ever but anyway with that being said let me know what you think in the comments below and of course if you haven't already please consider subscribing thanks for watching and i'll see you again next week maybe
