endings and memorable games tend to receive nicknames sometimes the name can reflect how incredible the finale was or it can represent more of the game's infamy but this official here jerry goes up and signals touchdown and see the other one go with that signal you would give for an interception correct touchback yes but perhaps no game in league history has had a more grotesque nickname than this one [Music] the liberty bell here at veterans stadium in philadelphia pennsylvania a capacity crowd on hand tonight for the philadelphia eagles and the washington redskins it was week 10 of the 1990 season just past the halfway point and featured as the premier matchup on national television monday night football was two playoff contenders not only that they were sworn enemies the rivalry between philadelphia and washington dates back to 1934 and has seen them go head to head over 170 times many of those associated closely with the rivalry speculate that the greatest period of time between these two teams occurred during a five-year stretch from 1988 through 1992 the peak of it in 1990. at the time washington was coached by joe gibbs whose wikipedia bio has his accomplishments as a nascar team owner listed before what he did as a head coach this says more about his nascar accomplishments because he won three super bowls with washington with three separate quarterbacks as an offensive minded coach his philosophy was smash mouth style football three yards and a cloud of dust if you will and they were led by their most famous unit their offensive line aka the hogs and now here is why their rivalry with philadelphia was so great because at the time the eagles had one of the most notorious defensive minded coaches in nfl history buddy ryan his greatest football accomplishment was being the catalyst to the famous 85 bears defense a unit that was intimidating nasty and absolutely dominated but he would become more known for his infamy as a former drill sergeant buddy was not to be messed with even in his old age the dude had some fire there's buddy ryan there's kevin gilbride that's buddy ryan taking a swing at kevin as a coach he was willing to let his players do anything he was once accused by cowboys coach jimmy johnson of putting a bounty on dallas kicker and quarterback this famously became known as the bounty bowl but despite trying to punch fellow assistant coaches and being accused of placing bounties on players his most memorable moment is what this video is all about this week 10 matchup in 1990 was the rematch between these two teams washington had grinded out a 13-7 win in their first game looking for revenge buddy ryan famously told reporters they were going to beat them so bad quote they'll have to be carted off in body bags now that's a quote just imagine a coach saying that now you couldn't get away with that even in a joking way but when buddy ryan said it it was no joke there is walter stanley who returned that punt and remained on the ground he got up and took one step immediately went back down watchman ron salt is coming off with a little assistance ben if you're gonna hold a guy hold the guy not exactly leaping to his feet emojienko al is hurt he got hit we've got is that manuscript still down on the field greg minuski the field and you can see that they have splitted that leg and he's not putting any weight on that at all [Music] and there goes 200 yards in total offense remaining in the corner and walter stanley on his way back back and howard is still scrolling out well a helmet the helmet hit joe howard takes it right into the year he'll watch number 80. here it comes [Music] and we hope that we hope that joe howard is going to be okay this is a scary moment what buddy ryan had said before the game had almost come true multiple players had been carted to the locker room and another player was placed on a stretcher that's about as close as it gets to not so available backup jeff rutledge started the game this hit ended his night brian and everybody else goes into the pad in west hopkins with a sack it's picked up by clyde simmons and it's a touchdown washington was down to stan humphries the team's third string quarterback and the only qb left on the roster and it is humphreys fighting his way in an attempt to get the first down and i don't think he's got it and i think humphreys is hurt did you see his leg get twisted when he went down reggie white twisting back to the inside and there it is look at the right knee pinned underneath so now what do they do they had no choice but to turn to their kick returner brian mitchell brian mitchell was a rookie that season he was a fifth round pick that was brought in to be a specialist in the return game and get some carries out of the backfield if necessary luckily he did play quarterback in college so the team listed him as the emergency qb this is a quote from mitchell i never thought i'd go in the game at quarterback because i wasn't expecting the other two guys to get hurt so when coach gibbs came up and said brian you're in i thought he meant at running back amazingly enough mitchell led them right down the field completing multiple passes and set up this one yard qb snake this just so happened to be his very first nfl touchdown anyways the final score read 2814 in philadelphia's favor but that's not the number people remember from this game the one they talk about is nine that was the number of washington players that left the game with injuries five of those players had to be carried off the field three of them required a cart and one required a stretcher later on this game would lead to a change in nfl rules allowing teams to dress a third quarterback outside of the roster limit this was a rule that lasted until they allowed for more players on the gameday roster this game is considered an iconic moment for philadelphia's franchise history it was a representation of what the buddy ryan years were all about but this is not where the story ends they would meet again two months later in the first round of the playoffs well it was body bags for the redskins the last time and who knows maybe it'll be a pine box for buddy after this after everything the redskins had heard about the bodybag game they went on to pretty much dominate the eagles philadelphia fired buddy ryan following that game one year later joe gibbs would host his third and final super bowl trophy and also brian mitchell was never needed again as an emergency qb but ironically enough he did throw one touchdown in his career as a member of the eagles on a fake punch shovel to brian dawkins for the most part brian mitchell's legacy will be remembered for what he did in washington not that drive in the bodybag game but as one of the best return specialists in the nfl and brian mitchell returning from the goal line for the redskins and mitchell gets into the open field and dramatica misses a tackle and mitchell still going down field and another miss [Applause] the key was his match-up on martin [Music] gramatica [Music] you
