Consumer Reports just came out with their updated list for most reliable makes and models of automobiles if you care about a reliable vehicle which I'm sure you do smash the heck out of the like button and let's find out which vehicles are going to last a test of time and which ones are going to leave you stranded I finally done it guys I have become a member of consumer reports so I can get this data and share it with you guys and also weigh in uh with my opinion on these topics for reliability Consumer Reports um some people swear by them some people don't let me know down below what you think but I always find it interesting to discuss their findings and before we get into who makes the most reliable new cars we need to get into how they score reliability this year they've gathered data on over 330,000 vehicles from the 2000 model year to the 2023 model year if you look at like JD Power for example they do reliability and dependability surveys and tests and results based off of like the last 3 years I have a fun time discussing it but with such a small sample size it's hard to take it seriously all right so they've studied 20 trouble areas from nuances such as squeaky brakes and broken interior trim to Major bummers such as potentially expensive outof warranty engine transmission EV battery and EV charging problems and they weigh the severity of each time type of problem to create a predicted reliability score for each vehicle from 1 to 100 and this year they're addressing hybrids plug-in hybrids and electric vehicles like they've never done before so internal combustion engine cars have 17 potential trouble areas EVS have up to 12 potential trouble areas there's less moving Parts in an Eevee hybrids have 19 potential trouble areas because it has a gas and EV system in it um and then you also plugin Vehicles which take it to the next level they say has potential 20 trouble areas because you have to now add in the charging potential problems and people not a fan of hybrids love to throw them under the bus because since they have more moving Parts they're more complex they're like well it's going to be less reliable hold the phone most of us know better than just to completely Dam a uh technology because it is has more parts to it that's not the whole story and that's also going to depend on the automaker with their hybrids and plug-in hybrids with the reliability as well and since we're talking about it I have to just put this in here guys hybrids are the most reliable according to Consumer Reports the most reliable types of vehicles on the road for powertrains 26% fewer problems than gas vehicles electric vehicles get this guys electric vehicles have 79% more problems than gas vehicles why why is that well I haven't read into it and I don't need to and maybe I should but electric vehicles are new there's a lot of software behind them traditional automakers are not that good at software yet it's going to take a while and we're also learning how to manage Battery Systems thermal management Etc so electric vehicles are still very green not meaning like environmentally friendly I mean they're new technology and there's a lot of change in a short amount of time as the technology uh improves the rapid change in technology as well that increases the problems to be seen in electric vehicles now plugin hybrids here's the thing they say 146% more problems than gas vehicles it depends we know the Prius Prime in the R 4 Prime and and this list shows that uh the Sportage plug-in hybrid from Kia they're extraordinarily reliable there are a lot of other plug-in hybrids from unreliable Brands so a lot of the Germans and uh Volvo provide lots of plug-in hybrids um Chrysler Pacifica is the most unreliable vehicle in the country according to Consumer Reports we'll talk about that in a little bit and that is D dragging down um the general plug-in hybrid uh reliability so just don't paint all plug-in hybrids as bad and avoid it like you know the plague avoid certain models of plugin hybrids like the plague if you plan on owning it a long time if you're leasing who cares dependability does not matter as much when you're leasing but it does suck if stuff is breaking in your three-year lease and it's in the shop you're paying for a vehicle and it's in the shop you're making payments you're you're paying the insurance on it it's in the shop for uh warranty work so reliability still matters for uh leasing people as well just not as much as it would if you were owning the vehicle long term okay let's get into the most reliable and least reliable Brands drum roll please let's get get into it number one on the list let's see if I can pump this up oh yeah there we go number one on the list right behind them is parent company Toyota but Lexus is number one um they say that the ux hybrid is the most reliable uh Lexus model it's essentially a Prius that's Better Built so there you go Lexus is the most reliable brand that shouldn't come as any surprise to most people who follow this channel um same thing with Toyota Toyota a parent company of Lexus is just that Lexus models have tighter tolerances so you are going to get a more reliable vehicle more times than not in a Lexus than your average Toyota and as we go through this list of the most reliable automakers we are going to go over the most reliable individual models which there are a lot of Toyota and Lexus models in there as well as other Japanese brands and we're also going to go over the least reliable models so make sure you have your snacks and drinks today guys we are just getting started and let's get into into number three many hold the phone Min is one of the most reliable Brands according to Consumer Reports I personally find this hard to believe when I was selling cars um I sold a couple minis uh on the used car and I also sold products so I would sell aftermarket warranties or service agreements and many had some of the most expensive aftermarket or service agreements or aftermarket warranties or after warrant after the factory warranty is done you're trying to sell an additional warranty it wasn't even worth spending it because the minis a warranty I remember selling like as like a 2011 Mini convertible Mini Cooper Convertible and the warranty cost is much as the car okay so you know it's probably depends on the May the model the model year maybe avoid the convertibles maybe they're not very reliable but let's keep moving down the list uh Acura no surprise there luxury division or you can say performance uh premium per performance premium uh acur doesn't consider thems luxury they call them like sport premium I can't even think of it right now they're they're the upper tier of Honda all right let's keep moving Honda shouldn't be too far off there they are at number five no surprise uh Subaru Subaru has very simple Vehicles you know we hear the head gasket issues with the boxer engines but the cvts they have super reliable cvts even though they're not very satisfying sub are very well-built cars uh even though they have cheaper materials that keeps the price down they're durable they last the test of time mazza's up there as well most of the mazas are made in Japan um Japan has insanely High uh build quality standards and culinary standards as well best food I've ever had in my life when I was in Japan thanks to David Chow when I was over there from Automotive press shout out he was taking me to some of the best restaurants Porsche now here's the thing Porsche a lot of people say you know pors is not as reliable as they seem because people don't drive them that much and the miles stay low and they keep them garaged and they keep them uh perfectly maintained these very wealthy owners so that's a part of it as well BMW in the top 10 for reliability that's interesting that is interesting maybe not their plug-in hybrids because plug-in hybrids in general are scorned upon at least according to Consumer Reports Kia in the top 10 Hyundai should be right there next to them as they are uh they should be one or you know right next to each other they are the same Brands essentially just just different philosophies and different styling they use the same powertrain same platform same technology Buick uh up is the first General Motors brand here on the list Infinity uh the luxury brand of Nissan up here uh doing okay Tesla no Tesla's getting better with the reliability uh seemingly so good for them but they have a long ways to go if they want to be knocking on the doors of some of the top uh manufacturers we've already talked about Ram uh simple pickup trucks not a lot to go wrong there in theory Cadillac Cadillac the luxury arm of General Motors Nissan probably the lowest Japanese brand on this list Genesis the luxury here's the thing as a luxury brand you think Genesis would be ahead their parent company like we saw with acur like we saw with Lexus like we saw with Infinity uh Etc but Genesis is actually less reliable now compared to Hyundai all right um it could be their introduction of more electrified models which we know electrified cars in general are not as reliable as gas or Hybrid models all right Audi uh a down falling down as well Chevy um and I'm just going to let the list I'm not going to talk about the rest of them at this point again Lincoln scoring under Ford interesting Volvo you know they have a lot of plug-in hybrids that's not helping their case seemingly if they have issues with those plugin hybrids uh Jeep not doing well there's going to be a lot of Jeeps on the unreliable list and same thing with Chrysler so rivan's even on the list but new company they're going to have a lot of growing pains a lot of bugs to work out Volkswagon super low on the list the second largest manufacturer in the world is arguably you know top five unreliable manufacturers as well Mercedes Benz very very low as they struggle to move their EVS Mercedes-Benz okay vehicle types this is something I haven't talked about I've talked about powertrain types that are most reliable let's talk about vehicle types cars including Sans hatchbacks and wagons are the most reliable vehicle type with an average reliability rating of 57 out of 100 SUVs at 50 minivans at 45 that Pacifica is throwing uh the other minivans under the bus here really dragging down their reliability rating uh let's see here and pickup trucks even though pickup trucks typically hold their value pretty well especially if you're talking about Tacoma and Tundra pickup trucks are in last place with an average reliability rating of 41 okay so let's dive more into the hybrids and which hybrids are doing really well here um Lexus ux NX hybrid uh Camry Hybrid Highlander Hy so essentially every single Toyota uh hybrid whether it's on the Lexus of Toyota because they're very similar hybrid technology if not exactly the same they are extraordinarily reliable probably s tier reliability Toyota hybrids uh they're okay let's talk about plug-in hybrids though we know these are very unreliable so the Q5 plug-in hybrid the Pacifica plug-in hybrid are really really poor but check this out there are standouts like the R 4 Prime the pre Prime will be in there as well um the Kia Sportage plug-in hybrids score well above average and the BMW X5 tucon here's the thing the Tucson and the Sportage plug-in hybrids it's the same technology so it shouldn't be that that big of a difference but uh maybe the Sportage and Tucson are build in two different uh manufacturing centers and that could lead to some differences um but yeah the the BMW X5 Tucson and Escape plug-in hybrids have average reliability all right guys if you need a potty break go ahead and do that we're going to get in consumer reports 10 most reliable cars here uh at the end of 2023 again looking at vehicles uh starting as as far back as the year or the model year 2000 look Camry on the list now Camry Hybrid uh ironic right Camry is going full hybrid which is only going to help uh its reliability in theory okay but we're going to find out real quick here that pretty much all Camry cames are very reliable we're going to work our way way backwards talk about the number 10 10th most reliable vehicle which is the Highlander Hybrid scoring uh not 85 that's what Consumer Reports rates the car overall but the Highlander Hybrid has a reliability rating of 75 out of 100 moving on to the next one which is a Toyota Corolla uh getting a 77 reliability rating again two Toyotas so far here on the top 10 most reliable list um and let's keep moving now the Corolla hybrid hasn't been out long enough probably for them to weigh in on that but it's going to be just as reliable if not more reliable than the standard Corolla uh all right next vehicle is acur RDX all right um with an average reliability of 80 um RDX is in kind of a need of a redesign probably by the end of 2025 I would say all right uh next vehicle on the list is the Rav 4 um with a reliability rating of 80 ra for coming in well now the ra for hybrid is not on here could be due to the cable gate the corrosion of that hybrid cable um which did has had problems in the past few years I believe it's all fixed on new models but it's something to to keep in mind if you're buying used I think Toyota is fixing it now but it's been like lawsuits piling up against them all right Subaru Forester coming with a reliability reliability rating of 82 really like the Forester love boxy it is gets good fuel economy um yeah it's typical Subaru all right next up on the list a bmwx5 is super reliable apparently with an a reliability rating of 82 RAB 4 Prime so just because it's a plug-in hybrid and the general category of plug-in hybrids have extremely low reliability just depends on the make in the model you're getting that's a plug-in hybrid the R 4 Prime an 84 reliability rating um and it is just an amazing Swiss army knife of a vehicle uh so I wish we had the Venza plugin hybrid in America but you know that would cut into the NX and RX plug-in hybrid sales for sure the Venza is being canceled unfortunately you guys know how I feel about that but yeah rap 4 Prime super reliable incredible vehicle all right now we're getting into the Camry I believe this is number three on the list the Camry uh and this is including the 4-cylinder and sixcy ER models so with Camry with average reliability of 86 next up on the list is a Camry Hybrid that's great news because the Camry Hybrid is only going to be more desirable now because it's fully hybrid now I know that's not going to be the answer for everyone right no one's happy with the cancelling of the V6 or or no you know um 8-speed automatics anymore but guys for the masses and the Camry cells in masses a fullon Camry Hybrid with more power and just a essentially a super refresh version of the current camera means it's just going to be as equally as reliable uh with the new redesign I use that term loosely the new redesign coming out and the most reliable vehicle on the list today is the Toyota 4Runner uh and it is going to get a redesign and is a redesign going to be as reliable highly doubt it especially at launch right because first year second year you have some problems um that they got to work out but the 4Runner hasn't changed for about five centuries at this point with the 4 L V6 six uh 5-speed Auto um and it feels like it's built from Granite um I'm driving a a Bronco Everglades and that thing it's loud it's rattly I know I'm comparing apples to oranges but doesn't feel like could ever Outlast a forerunner uh and an overall longevity and reliability so anyways Forerunner crushing it the most reliable vehicle on this list does that surprise you doesn't surprise me uh some of the surprises on the most reliable list are going to be like the X5 for example uh nothing else on this list surprises me to be honest so we're going to move on to the most unreliable vehicles that your dollar can buy in 2023 coming at number 10 on the list is a Jeep Wrangler at a lovely 27 reliability rating I'm going to go through this faster than I did the reliab ones um Jeep Grand oh two Jeeps starting great Jeep you have two so far in the top 10 of most unreliable Vehicles all right Volkswagen Jetta with a reliability of 25 I remember trying to sell after market service warranties on jetos not easy to do it would cost as much as the car kind of like Min um Nissan Frontier this one surprises me uh because the frontier I like the truck so much I love the V6 I love the 9-speed Auto I don't know why it's so low on the list when I was driving it it kind of gave me 4Runner Vibes it felt very well built but maybe that's just a sample I got cuz I've heard other uh journalists get Frontiers in and they said well you know the doors weren't you know slamming per properly and it's like the ones I tested the doors were like some of the most satisfying door closes so I think they just have issues with quality control on the frontier uh so we're going to move on Jeep cray Cherokee oh what is this our third Jeep already on the list um of top 10 most unreliable r1t we already talked about rivan um Volvo so again those plug-in hybrids from Volvo seem to be extraordinarily unreliable even though they are fantastic powertrains my gosh is it super satisfying check out my uh review on the S60 the postar tuned S60 oh my gosh if if that vehicle was reliable man I wouldn't uh yeah it would be hard to to not to just sink my teeth into it F-150 hybrid these are are tanking in uh after sorry on the used market right now I think they're sitting on lots of while on a while but uh even on the new market as well but yeah maybe it's because they're super unreliable so just because it's a hybrid doesn't mean it's the most reliable it depends on the make and the model all right let's keep moving the to another Volkswagen similar to the Jetta right super low reliability rating um yeah I mean I've reviewed the to two or three times here on the channel it's kind of like the most whatever vehicle all right Pacifica plug-in hybrid I just reviewed it the within the past couple actually it was around Halloween um I can see like this I don't yeah just watch my review on it I don't want to follow fall too far off the the frustration rants but pacifical plugin hybrid I can't recommend it it's really expensive I love plug-in hybrids I love them I love them but this felt un underbaked massively there's a lot of issues I had with it so just watch my review on it um if you're going to buy Pacifica get the V6 you're going to have a lot better reliability and experience than you are more than likely more than likely than the hybrid model all right thank you guys for making it this far um here are some models for Lexus that are doing extremely well well the NX has average reliability um but the NX hybrid es es hybrid RX RX Hybrid are all above average and the ux is well above average the 4Runner for Toyota we know it's the most reliable vehicle on the list and the only model with below average rating is a tundra you know they went to the new platform twin turbo V6 so a lot of issues people are having with it so but it's not the twin Trio V6 necessarily but they're saying issues in uh Hardware paint trim and car electronics and Brake issues with the tundra yikes uh the crown and bz 4X brand new vehicles are average you know the b4x had its Wheels falling off the crown I find hard to believe is just average it's built in Japan but the powertrain is new on it the the hybrid Max anyway so anyways the Sienna seems to be just average as well uh the redesign previous and previous Prime are well above average and let's see here other Toyotas above average we know we talked about the Camry and the raap 4 Prime are top 10 in Rel ability accurate we know the RDX was top 10 but the TLX also has above average reliability MDX and Integra are both average MDX owners have issues with incar electronics and noises and leaks o Hondas are average isn't that interesting Hondas are are scoring average in today's modern uh reliability reports uh that includes a passport pilot Odyssey CRV hybrid uh rideline Accord and Civic the Accord Hybrid and CRV are above average and the h RV is outstanding pilot owners are reported issues with body Hardware paint and trim Odyssey and passport owners have issues with electronics now on to Subaru BRZ WRX Forester cross Che score above average or well above average well we talked about how the Forester is in the top 10 right Outback isent sutera and Legacy are all average people are having issues with the sutera and charging which doesn't surprise me uh that's going to affect the pz4 X as well Outback and Legacy have incar Electronics issues and the ascent has climate control issues and break issues Mazda's well above average uh for the MX5 uh the Mazda 3 which doesn't say sedan and hatch probably both cx50 which is a brand new vehicle cx30 and CX5 Kia score above average or better the Sportage plug-in hybrid is well above average um and yeah I'm I can't go into every single car maker here because this video would probably end up being about an hour long um but if you you feel like pausing while I scroll down once you get into the automaker you care about um then go ahead and do that here's some Tesla stuff Ram Cadillac we're on the domestic automakers like I said I have a Bronco uh in the driveway right now they're saying uh Maverick and Edge are above average and the Bronco below average which doesn't surprise me um I've heard a lot of issues with the Bronco I I like the Bronco sport more I'll just say that after test the Bronco sport I like it a lot more than the big Bronco um but I you know I'm not doing off-roading so that's probably why I like it better because this is a better everyday vehicle unless you just want to look like the off-road man of the year and the Bronco will make you look like that because it's absolutely amazing looking truck but anyways um yeah I'm going to end it there guys what are you surprised about here on today's list um has your mind changed about any of the automakers and their reliability how much stock do you put in consumer reports uh reliability list um I think it's you know out of out of the reliability reports out there it's hard to argue that they're not uh the best not saying that what they're saying is 100% gospel but they probably have the most accurate reliability reports um especially compared to JD Power um but I know it's not perfect but let me know which of these surprised you many and the top three like that doesn't make sense to me based off of my personal experience but let me know have you owned minis have they been reliable for you um Porsche BMW also in the top 10 is pretty surprising but let me know have have you own those vehicles have they been reliable for you what has your personal experience been um and yeah the list goes on thank you guys for watching uh this year's breakdown of consumer reports reliability ratings um Toyota Lexus at the top uh again we'll just do we'll finish the top 10 Acura number four Honda number five Subaru number six Maza number seven Porsche BMW and then you can lump Kia and Hyundai together for rounding out the top 10 thank you guys have a great holiday season uh if you're watching this in late 2023 if you're watching in 2024 Happy New Year hope you're having a great 2024
