with the wrestling career dating back to the 1980s mark callaway carved out a career nothing short of astonishing join us now as wrestlemania examines the complete history and evolution of the undertaker born in Houston Texas on March 24 1965 mark Callaway was the youngest of five boys an avid Houston Oilers fan Callaway was an avid fan of his hometown football team but it was basketball where he made his mark in sports after graduating Waltrip high school he attended the University of st. Thomas and Texas Wesleyan University where he played college basketball while Callaway lacked the skills to play in the NBA he was actually offered a chance to play basketball in France he declined deciding to pursue a wrestling career however things weren't easy with no contacts in the wrestling world Callaway found it difficult to break into the business working as a bouncer where he lived out of his truck however as he told a group of Texas football players in 2017 it was a very slow process I used to go down to the old Sportatorium for eight months every Wednesday I went down there and sat at the office I watched him walk right by me didn't acknowledge me didn't say hello to me didn't tell me to get the hell in or get the hell out one day Fritz Von Erich walked in the door Fritz Von Erich walked in he looked at me didn't say anything but still he walked in another room and I heard him say who's the big redheaded kid he says let's book him for Friday night he booked me because I look like his son I was just in the right place at the right time and my perseverance paid off and all the doors that got slammed in my face I got my stop because I look like the oldest son that he had lost and that set me on my course Calloway found work in Fritz Von Erichs a legendary world class Championship Wrestling Territory working under a mask as Texas red against the late great bruiser Brody from there Calloway headed to Memphis Texas working as the master of pain wrestler Dutchman tell who was managing Callaway and Memphis took him under his wing and shared his years of experience in the industry when Callaway told him his ultimate goal was at WWF Mantell told him he'd have to go to WCW to get the exposure he needed to catch Vince McMahon's attention however Memphis was barely a blip on the national wrestling radar and it seemed unlikely anyone would take notice of him as sometimes happens one man's misfortune proved to be another's fortune here mark Callaway caught his first big break when WCW big man Sid Vicious felt her injury Vicious had been teaming with dan spivey and WCW as the big man tag team known as the skyscrapers Jim Cornette who'd started his career in Memphis and still followed the territory was now working on WCW booking committee with vicious al Cornett knew where to find a big man and a big man was what he was looking for he was a guy we brought in from Memphis because he's tall I had seen Mark's matches I knew he could pull it off but yeah it was basically because he was tall there's the parameters he's a skyscraper callaway was still learning his craft but he landed the opportunity he'd sought for four years callaway got a big push as the new member of the skyscrapers debuting against the road warriors at 1989 s clash of Champions TV special however when Spivey left WCW Callaway found his career sputtering in singles action as mean Mark Ellis a big man just to put over a number of WCW stars nevertheless Callaway learned from every match and Paul Heyman observed Callaway's passion for learning he could wrestle a match and then review the match in his head move by move completely bell-to-bell despite WCW Booker o Lee Anderson telling him he'd never draw Callaway didn't give up and when the WWF called he traveled north [Music] Vince McMahon decided to give the big man the gimmick of an unstoppable monster he'll whose persona was that of an old western mortician Callaway filmed a small part in Hulk Hogan suburban commando a role Hogan would claim led him to personally asking for the WWF to sign Callaway whatever the circumstances Callaway debuted as Kane the Undertaker and 1990s Survivor Series destroying Dusty Rhodes Dream Team as part of Ted DiBiase's million dollar team while brother love aka Bruce Prichard initially managed him that would soon change along with the WWF dropping came from The Undertaker's name from there the WWF pushed the Undertaker as an unstoppable force who destroyed all opponents pairing taker with a pasty-faced manager Paul Bearer who actually worked as a mortician before entering the WWF added the right touch of the macabre to the gimmick and The Undertaker's post match ritual of placing fallen opponents into body bags scared many a young fan the Undertaker would eventually be seen as one of the wws most fearsome heal and soon the Undertaker was put into a WWF Championship match in 1991 Survivor Series with The Deadman shocking the world by defeating Hulk Hogan for the belt Francis Bacon once wrote men feared death as children fear to go in the dark and as that natural fear in children is increased by tales so is the other such was the case with the Undertaker a character who played upon humanity's universal fear of the great unknown called death with his imposing size and garish look The Undertaker represented an inhumane juggernaut who no opponent seemed capable of defeating wrestling history is full of badass personas who got over with the fans due to their winning ways and the Undertaker proved to be one such character after teaming with Jake the snake Roberts during their program against the ultimate warrior and later Randy Macho Man Savage The Undertaker proved there were limits to his evil ways as he was seen rescuing Miss Elizabeth from a chair shot from Roberts the two met at WrestleMania 8 would the Undertaker scoring another win in what would eventually become known as the streak Marc Callaway took the opportunity he was given and ran with it take what could have been a bad gimmick for others and turning it into arguably the greatest character in WWE history WWF creative guru Bruce Prichard discus mark Callaway's dedication to his character mark jumped in with both feet there are guys who are given gimmicks and feel like the gimmick isn't them or they can't do it well did they don't want to do it mark embraced him he became that character inside and outside the ring The Undertaker worked during a time known as the new generation a period marked by skill wrestlers such as Bret the Hitman Hart and Shawn Michaels but also remarkable for his bad booking although the Undertaker was a main eventer he worked through some awful programs including his disqualification win over giant gonzales at wrestlemania 9 the 1994 royal rumble where Yokozuna and his hired guns killed the undertaker The Undertaker's returned to take on his mirror image the under faker and a program with the 500 pound King Mabel that saw the big man accidentally break take his orbital bone through it all the Undertaker did is told becoming a reliable hand and a respected locker room leader over time the Undertaker maintained order in the locker room even through the most turbulent of times as James Dixon details in Titans sinking the Undertaker formed a backstage faction known as the bone Street crew with Yokozuna and others in order to counteract the growing power of the click when the Montreal Screwjob threatened to tear the WWF locker room apart The Undertaker told Vince McMahon he needs to apologize to Bret Hart the Undertaker would serve as a judge for wrestlers court dispensing justice for infractions amongst the roster such as disrespecting veterans The Undertaker faced one of his strongest challenges in years when Mick Foley entered that WWF as did deranged mankind mankind proved as vicious as the Undertaker scoring surprised wins over his larger opponent the field proved even worse when Paul Bearer betrayed the Undertaker to side with mankind The Undertaker eventually won the feud proving himself at a time when many new superstars were headed to the main event these included Stone Cold Steve Austin and the rock as well as established main eventers such as Shawn Michaels and Bret Hart however a more personal opponent lurked in the shadows The Undertaker's brother came Paul Bearer threatened to reveal a dark secret from The Undertaker's pass unless he allowed Barrett back as his manager taker refused and eventually Bearer revealed that the Undertaker had burnt down his family's funeral home killing his family including the Undertaker's half-brother however Kane showed up at 1997 s-band blood pay-per-view during the Undertaker's match versus Shawn Michaels in the wws first Hell in a Cell bout there Kane made an unforgettable debut tearing the door of the cage and attacking his storyline brother with a Tombstone Piledriver while The Undertaker didn't want to fight his brother things culminated in a match at WrestleMania 14 where he defeated Kane and in a follow-up Inferno match Unforgiven the two would clash again several times over the next two decades as well as former powerful team the Brothers of Destruction after his iconic Hell in a Cell match against mankind at 1998 king of the Ring The Undertaker entered a feud with Stone Cold Steve Austin before turning heel and forming his own fraction the Ministry of Darkness the WWF capitalized on its more adult orientated content turning the Undertaker into a diabolical villain who threatened to wrest control of the WWF by targeting Vince McMahon's daughter Stephanie the program was well received until it was revealed that it was all an elaborate ruse set up by Vince McMahon to get back at Stone Cold Steve Austin The Undertaker's constant presence on WWF television took its toll on his body and by 2000 he had to take time off to recover from nagging injuries around this time Kevin Nash reportedly reached out to Calloway to join WCW while Eric Bischoff has gone on record and denied there were any plans to bring Calloway into WCW had he gone it's possible he would have gone in as the American Badass character as the Undertaker character was owned by the WWF however he did not and when he returned to the WWF it was as a new biker character The Undertaker knew the importance of keeping his character fresh in the eyes of fans and used the American badass biker gimmick to do so another Hilton as big evil made for new matchups against established stars and rising stars such as Jeff Hardy he continued to be a dominant force but he was gracious in helping to get over stars such as edge and Batista when asked to do so taker would even put over would-be stars such as the Great Khali and Vladimir Kozlov even if they didn't turn out to be the stars Vince McMahon envisioned by the 21st century it was clear that the Undertaker's WrestleMania winning and Perl elde in the company's history every year fans wondered if this would be the year that the Undertaker finally lost although the Undertaker faced a steady diet of outstanding opponents such as Triple H Ric Flair Kane Randy Orton Batista Mark Henry edge and Shawn Michaels he stood undefeated the Undertaker work some of the best matches of his career including his back-to-back WrestleMania Series against Shawn Michaels followed by back-to-back WrestleManias against Triple H the Undertaker seemed timeless despite a career dating back decades in 2013 the Undertaker defeated CM Punk at WrestleMania 29 racking up his 21st win at the showcase of The Immortals would no defeat yet however the next year saw the Undertaker's greatest challenge yet when he locked up with Brock Lesnar that day Vince McMahon asked the Undertaker to do what something thought was unthinkable dropping a match at WrestleMania the Undertaker suffered a serious concussion during the match but he managed to work through it Vince McMahon left WrestleMania xxx early in order to ride to the hospital with the Undertaker in a December 2014 appearance on Steve Austin's podcast McMahon defended his decision no one wants to give back to the business more than the Undertaker more than Marc Callaway he knew it was important to give back to the business there comes a time in which it's time to do that the Undertaker continued wrestling but his appearances would be limited he was always a big event but now every appearance meant even more whether it was teaming up with Kane to take on the Wyatt family renewing his feud with Brock Lesnar or putting Roman reigns over at WrestleMania 33 the Undertaker continues to be a beloved star in the promotion and someone who is a guaranteed draw whilst rumors persist that the Undertaker is about to hang up his boots his recent appearance at WWE's crown jewel and rumors about WrestleMania 35 rematch against John Cena have fans guessing what the future holds for the Phenom with an unbelievable career and a legacy that few wrestlers will ever come close to approaching the Undertaker is
