British Pound notes of the period relied solely on an intricate, complex font to thwart counterfeiting. It was thought that the amount of skill and effort required to fake the bills would exceed the value of counterfeiting operations. This was true for small operations, but they certainly did not count on a nation-level amount of resources or the skills of prisoners that were literally in a "do or die" position.

Though not a state sponsored operation, counterfeiting Confederate notes did in fact help destroy their economy. Lincoln passively approved this though he was worried it could be used against the Union. That’s why he created the Secret Service to stop counterfeiters.
