my favorite thing about the pilgrim jubilees is first and foremost they was authentic and they were real i watched i watched some of the videos and like cleveland clay and the pilgrim jubilees they had such a flow like every single one of them like they all had their own unique style they didn't copycat other folks like they had their own unique style and what i really respect about them is and why they're one of my groups one of my favorite groups that i look up to is they could have did any genre but they stuck with gospel music and you know that's rare because you know nowadays we got groups just going on any other every single genre but like those guys they stuck with gospel music and they stuck to their roots and they stuck to what they was raised in but that they'll forever be my heroes one of the things that i um remember most about the jews is they used to come here for years i think 20 something odd years straight as my sister joanne real was the promoter at the time and they would come in and they would come in like celebrities and i think i was so young to where i didn't really understand their status um and i took it for granted they were just you know the premium jubilees that was the jews from horse nation from new zealand houston church family you know you hear them you hear some of the songs that they sing they talk about you know the way they was raised and the way their mom took them to church at new zealand i mean this stuff is these places are places tangible places that we touch so it was common but it wasn't until um i got older and they began to get older and i realized wow these are really legends from our very own hometown not only that um we got to speaking with some of them and one thing they would always say whenever um they figured out who i married which i married the baby son of um mr irving johnson and miss sadie johnson of houston but mr irv lee johnson was indeed their first cousins they was two sister children and they would always make a point to say you marry my cousin you know and they would always say uh the johnson's got this thing to where you want to tell the johnson look at his nose so uh the boys want to think when the boys started getting older sarah wasn't born at the time but they would always gather them and i remember the last time that they were here we was over at afton omega at the last homecoming that um joanne presented for the town and the boys song a song that we saw i feel like going on and cleve and clay were there and after the song the boys had got down off the stage and cleve had hugged them and it wasn't just one of those ordinary hooks he held them and he held them a long time and tears was just streaming down his face and that made me realize wow they are really serious about families they didn't look at them as little boys in the crowd that wanted to hug the pilgrim jubilees they were hugging their family so i took it upon myself um quartet has always been in my blood my mother was um a part of a quartet group my father sang quartz before he started preaching my sister's formulated a group in the early 80s the voices of faith that we sang for years so quartet is something that we've always had in our blood um and then once the johnson started one of the things i pull up is the pringle jubilees and i think it wasn't until they was about 15 or 16 and they was driving home one day and they was hearing the song testimony their testimony about how their daddy got saved and they mimic them oh my god this song was just amazing to them and i when i told them i said you know those were your cousins and they just couldn't believe like for real so they started studying them they started listening to them and i always told them i said look one thing about the jews the jews had a band now they had a band they had mr bobby uh with the guitar and he just moved just like this and he he swing that good side they had uh mr eddie joe graham and they had uh i call him uncle mike the bass player one of the baddest basses it is and but one thing about the jews before they had that band you would see them if you google them on youtube you see black and white pictures of them singing just with a mic and just hand clapping for stomping they might have one guitar and that made me uh inspire me to let my children know all the hoopla is okay you can have the tracks and you have the the ten the ten person band but if you want to touch the heart of god you know the biggest instrument you have is your voice that's the most important um instrument you have is your voice so we we started out acapella and one of the songs that i taught them from the jews is this old song and we're going to attempt it we're not the jew but this is one thing i try to let them know is that you know i i love all different types of gospel music i love gospel rap i love contemporary i love traditional but quartet and acapella will always be in my court so i um call them around and we get around the living room and um i tell them look we're gonna say one of the jews song and this is the one i told [Music] [Music] oh [Applause] [Music] oh somebody might want to see jesus step on if you want to choose [Music] ain't [Music] ain't no danger oh [Music] oh it is [Music] [Music] if you want to see jesus [Music] [Music] wow [Music] oh if you want to see jesus you gotta oh me me me me me me me me me [Applause] [Music] ladies and gentlemen at this time we'd like to honor our cousin leave the playground of the famous pilgrim jubilees killing the horse nation [Music] whatever you do please don't forget to [Music] sing [Music] that sounds good but it is not good enough you know what i want my brother kirkland to be singing by himself [Music] [Music] yes [Music] look upon [Music] home [Music] oh [Music] is [Music] for everyone and there's got to be a [Music] problem [Music] oh [Music] it'll make you feel better it will lift you up [Applause] my god [Music] so [Music] you
