this video is for information and educational purposes only why because I don't want to go to jail [Music] hey guys welcome to the homestead so today we're gonna talk about a plant that grows pretty much throughout the Ozarks you'll see it here and there more often some places than others but it definitely grows on our homestead and I thought it'd be a good video talk about it because there's a really cool interesting characteristic that this plant offers and provides that is actually illegal to use the reason it's illegal all the reason most things are illegal is because they work so I'll share that with you in a second but let me show you the plant what you see behind me here is what's called Mullen common Mullen has lots of different names common mullein great Mullen cowboy toilet-paper Indian toy paper pig candlewick Indian ragweed Bullock's lung works Adam's rod hair pears beard ice leaf bullies Mullen velvet Mullen blanket Mullen Beggar's blanket Moses blanket poor-man's blanket our ladies blanket an old man's blanket felt worth velvet doc and Mullen doc Mullen actually means soft in French I'm not sure who first came up with that term but it is actually pretty soft I've always heard to it referred to as Indians toilet paper or you know cowboy toilet paper but you know it's very soft it would definitely be a good toilet paper if you didn't have anything else to use but it's just a really interesting plant very very soft velvety it's got very fine hairs on it doesn't hurt you at all it's normally where people have always told me that it's an invasive species which really isn't true but the reason people think it's an invasive species is because when the pods grew up in its second year takes two years for the seeds to come in but its second year a big rod will come up and then there'll be all kinds of seed pods and each seed pod holds about I don't know seven hundred or so seeds and so because it holds so many seeds people think of it as an invasive species but it's actually not really hard to get rid of out of your property or area it's real simple to dig it up it's got a very short tap root you dig it up you toss it aside it's dead and it won't produce seed because it takes two years to produce the seed it's got a long list of uses including medicinal uses starting with wait a minute let me get my list again sores rashes pulmonary diseases skin infections athlete's foot colic ear aches frostbite eczema warts boils carbuncles hemorrhoids and all kinds of ways to boil it into a tea and some of those teas can they say are used to treat even tumors but the thing I find the most incredible about this plant is something that you can actually use to feed yourself and I'm not talking about the plant eating the plant it's a great way to catch fish however it's illegal to do this so again informational educational purposes only in the second year when it produces its gigantic rod that cuff sticks way up it'll produce lots of flowers on that rod and on that rod after the flowers go away there'll be lots of these you know big seed pods and inside those seed pods you take those seeds again about 700 seeds per pod and you take those you gather all those pods you break it open gather the seeds and you put them inside like a mortar and pestle and you squish them all together and grind them all up and then you take that so that ground-up seed and then you go out to a lake or a pond and then you scatter them into that pond and wait because very shortly after fish will start to rise to the surface where you can easily grab them and put them into your boat or whatever you're in but yeah what it does there are certain chemicals about four different chemicals these chemicals when they encountered the water they spread a stunning agent into the water and any fish that come into it comes and encounters that that that stunning agent will immediately go to sleep and just rise to the surface I don't think it actually kills the fish well it does actually stuns it for a period of time allowing you to easily catch the fish and then putting into putting it into your boat or going out and waiting in catching putting the fish into a net or something like that but easy way to catch fish and it is definitely illegal in almost every state in our country there are certain laws that are written that prevents you from using any type of chemical natural or otherwise for catching fish so you cannot but see this is something that indigenous people and Indians and native natives from other countries and even this country used to catch their fish and they were smart enough to be able to understand that you couldn't do this but maybe once a year because if you did it more than once all of the population of the fish are gonna be gone so let's just say you go out to a pond a small pond or a small lake and you put these seeds out and you disperse them and you go out there and you catch all the fish well you know it doesn't kill all the fish there are some fish that are gonna make it and survive and not be affected by these seeds however if you go out there year after year our month after month and do this over and over again when you get these seeds there won't be any fish alive and so most of the indigenous peoples that you read about who do this practice they will do it once a year or maybe once every two years so that they can continue to make sure that the fish in these ponds and in these lakes continue to thrive and grow and reproduce themselves it's very effective and so that's why they used to do that too because it's very effective you can't do it too many times otherwise you won't have any fish but this is an amazing plant the Mullen plant the plant that you see often it's often referred to as toilet paper or Indians toilet paper is what I've heard heard it the seeds that it produces will catch fish you actually do the catching but it you know allows you to catch the fish again information educational purposes only I'm not telling you to break the law I'm just telling you that if if it was legal it would work all right believe it at that see you next time on Olmstead
