Could beat any of us in a race. He hates me. Always gives me this look. Hedges goes out and doesn't come back and he nabs me up. He doesn't want me coming back. Can't be talking like that. Germans took the northern tip. They're right there. Attila. What? Attila the Hun. He lead the Huns agains the Romans. They fought right here in these trees. Attila and his people were barbarians. Pillaged, raped, murdered. Savages. The Romans were scared of em. They had to hold them off. I heard this story. This Roman legion was stuck way out on the plain. Stranded. Wave after wave, the Huns came in, pounding them with everything they had. Just when they think they had them all, BAM. Another wave of the savages comes rolling in. The legion set up for the night, preparing for the next attack, but.. it didn't come. So they waited and waited. Heard faint screams. Wails from their own wounded. But they swore, believed without a shadow of a doubt the Huns were coming at them. Drove a few of them boys mad after a while. A few of them just.. up and walked away. Walked away? Yeah. Wandered straight towards the trees. Towards the Huns. Yeah. Maybe they just didn't care anymore. Figured.. they'd go meet death formally. Here you go, Sir. Cheers. What is it, MacDonald? Nothing, Sir. You want to know why, don't you? Why I picked you as the new runner? Yes Sir. Take a seat. You look outside, you see the rest of the guys, your friends. They're all just as scared, angry, just as anxious as you to get out of here. I picked you because I can see in your face how much you care about them. Most of them don't show it, even if they do. The way I see it, the guy who can't help showing that he cares is the best guy for a job getting messages around. I know you hate me. I'm sure the rest of them do too. Some things you just have to carry with you. It's just the way it is. Whole thing's an awful mess. I don't rightly know when any of this will end. Feels like, no matter what happens, no matter if I make it out of here or not, i'm always going to be in this trench, you know? Oh! Shit! What did I say, left or right! Hand em over! How come i'm the only one handing out smokes? Hey Mac? Can you check on Aiello? Yup Aiello, you good up there? Peachy, tell Corporal Mathias we got to fix this thing. Lens is damaged.
