Many notable guests including royalty and world leaders visited the house. The property dates back to the 14th century The lounge ( Reception Room) Lady Clementine Churchill - Winston's wife and rock! Port Arromanches - On June 6th 1944, some 4,126 Allied ships successfully achieved the greatest landing in history on the beaches of Normandy, taking the Germans by surprise. A day away from Chartwell is a day wasted [Winston Churchill quote] The bedroom - Winston had a separate bedroom ( only accessible on special tours) He liked to work late and so to not disturb "Clem" Lady Churchill's Parliamentary Robes The property hold's many artifacts, gifts and family possessions. Order of the Garter - Refused by Churchill in 1945 but finally relented and accepted in 1953 presented by Queen Elizabeth II Uniforms, hats and his famous poka dot tie provide a fascinating insight into his life. Soft toys were used by Winston as placeholders for books he had removed from the library for reference. The Study - (door to right leading to private bedroom) Many now famous speeches and decisions were made from this desk. The cigars are not original as they dry out. A few do remain but are kept in special protected condition. The dining room has a more modern feel to the rest of the house, with it's neo-classical arch windows. Winston entertained his guests in politics, arts and business. The kitchen, modest for the size of the house. The gardens and lake are extensive 9 hectares (20 acres) They were largely landscaped by Churchill and Lady Churchill The swimming pool Churchill stocked the pond with little golden orfe in 1938 He fed and painted them from this seat, the picture is displayed in the studio The Marlborough Pavilion was built as a summer house in the mid 1920's Views of the Kent countryside The walled kitchen garden provided vegetables for the house. A qualified brick layer be build parts of the walled garden The upkeep of the house became a burden for the Churchill family 18 years before his death the family allowed a group of business men to buy the property. They in turn offered it to The National Trust in 1946/7 A condition was that Winston and Chementine could remain for as long as they wanted. They stayed until 1964 A leaving request was that there should always be a marmalade cat called Jock at Chartwell. Keep an eye out for Jock VI during your visit! An estate cottage was converted into Winston's painting studio Now home to many of his 500+ completed paintings the little golden orfe Chartwell home of Sir Winston Churchull was bought & presented to the nation in 1947 by a group of his friends and admirers whose names are recorded here in gratitude by the National Trust For more information visit the National Trust website.
