happy little games when the scrolling beat em up was introduced in the arcades in the 1980s it caught the attention of arcade gamers worldwide i've said it before and i'll say it again there was nothing better than playing a simultaneous two-player co-op game and beating the tar out of all the various enemies on screen with one of your mates or just some random stranger at the machine arcade giant konami had dipped their toes into the genre with 1986's part run and gun part run and punch iron horse [Music] another beat-em-up released by the company also in 1986 was mr kabuki they would also release another well-known beat-em-up that featured four-player simultaneous action by the name of crime fighters in 1989. [Music] that same year konami stumbled upon the winning formula with a combination of the perfect hardware and the perfect license these radical dudes with attitudes would go on to punch and kick their way not only into our hearts but also our big stack of quarters as well no i'm not talking about battle toads i'm not even talking about biker mice for mars i'm talking about the mutated pizza loving reptiles the teenage mutant ninja turtles but more specifically the arcade game teenage mutant ninja turtles turtles in time what famous professional wrestler has a connection to this game so put on your mask and grab your nunchucks this is the history of teenage mutant ninja turtles turtles in time the year is 1990 and konami is looking to follow up its mega successful arcade game teenage mutant ninja turtles before we dive headfirst into the classic arcade game we've got to go back even further to 1984 when the writer artist duo peter laird and kevin eastman were trying to come up with a concept for a comic book one evening they were brainstorming and eastman sketched a humorous ninja turtle which laird thought was fantastic with money from a tax refund they decided to self-publish the book the original idea was to parody some of the more serious comics on the market at that time such as frank miller's ronin and marvel's daredevil they published the first issue through mirage studios and it was a massive hit it was initially a black and white comic so all of the characters wore the same color headbands they were named after the four renaissance painters leonardo donatello michelangelo and rafael thanks to a crafty licensing agent soon a cartoon deal was offered up provided the dual could lighten the mood and make a few changes the turtles would all wear different colored masks to help identify them easier it couldn't be anywhere near as violent as the comics so that meant killing shredder was a definite no-no even though it occurred early in the series life something else that was out was their love of beer being replaced by the sweet sweet taste of pizza had seen the success of the original comic book and cartoon and felt that little would be lost in the translation between the two countries they felt that the original cartoon would be the perfect license for their hardware says there were four turtles they designed the game with four simultaneous players in mind meaning four times the profit it would go on to be konami's most successful arcade game no matter what arcade you went into you could hear this familiar tune [Music] playing back in 1990 konami had wanted to capitalize on the success of their previous turtle entry and also fixed some of the issues of the first one a lot of people enjoyed it myself included but many players felt that the game got repetitious they wanted to expand the moves just a bit in the new game and also add more bosses and locations the best way to get a varied set of levels is to use different points in time or travel to outer space which is exactly what they did the game runs in the same engine as the first one but with many tweaks to the gameplay the graphics have also been upgraded with even better animation the sound effects and music were given a boost as well and composed by mutsuhiko izumi who also took care of the original arcade game soundtrack and of course what would a turtle's arcade game be without the signature four player action each of the turtles have their own unique attributes such as donatello having a longer more powerful reach but not quite as fast raphael is probably the fastest in my opinion but his attacks are not quite as strong etc teenage mutant ninja turtles turtles and time sliced and diced its way into the arcades in 1991. as the story goes april o'neil is broadcasting live from the statue of liberty while the turtles are watching on their humble 13-inch tv screen all i know is the tv must have one heck of an antenna to get reception all the way down in the sewers below krang decides to crash the party and steal the statue of liberty similar to what david copperfield did back in 1983. [Applause] all i know is that when the curtain dropped the statue was not there and i didn't see it hey crying bring that statue back you bloated beanbag our four heroes have to go on a quest to save the statue of liberty take out all the dastardly criminals and restore new york city just the way it was which includes living in a sewer with an oversized rat who teaches you martial arts while you munch on day-old pizza the game takes place across eight levels with a mini boss at the end of each one the controls are the same as the first one with an eight-way joystick used for movement along with an attack button and a jump button although their movesets remain pretty much the same there are a couple of new additions such as the slam grapple this is automatically triggered during the striking combo which sees you slam your opponent side to side if an enemy is too heavy this will result in just a simple throw being done you also have the very cool looking screen throw which allows you to throw an enemy at the screen utilizing a cool scaling effect but again done at random each of the turtles also have their own special attacks when both jump and strike are pressed at the same time although powerful it does use up a little of your health the game takes place across nine levels with the mini boss at the end of each one the levels you will encounter are the big apple [Music] 3am [Music] alley cat blues surfing [Music] after defeating this level shredder sends you back in time to prehistoric turtlesaurus 25 million bc skull and crossbones 30 a.d very my shell and wounded knee 1885 a.d neon knight riders 2020 a.d star base where no turtle has gone before 2100 a.d and the final showdown between the turtles and shredder takes place at the technodrome the final shell shock in the year 1991 [Music] some of the bosses you will encounter are baxter stockman metal head [Music] cement man [Music] leather head [Music] super crank android crying in the spaceship [Music] and finally shredder if you are able to defeat shredder you are treated to a radical ending featuring april o'neil the turtles and the turtle blind the teenage mutant ninja turtles our four reptilian heroes have overcome the arc villain shredder [Music] the graphics and animation are really well done with some nice scaling and rotating effects thrown in the sound effects and audio were given a massive upgrade with longer and much clearer voice clips each boss will taunt you before the fight and again they sound fantastic [Music] man i just had a shower [Music] for some reason the original team that provided the voices were not brought back they sound similar but not quite exactly the same the attract mode tune was changed from the original cartoon opening to pizza power which was taken from the live tmnt concert known as coming out of their shell since this game was developed while the second movie secret of the use was in production they decided to include elements from it such as taka razar and super shredder as bosses super shredder was played by professional wrestler kevin nash who would go on to become big daddy cool diesel in the wwf even with all these tweaks and improvements the gameplay is still silky smooth and it's a fantastic party game the humor facial expressions and voice clips really bring you into the game and is almost as if you're playing an actual cartoon my toes my toes thanks to the overwhelming success of the arcade game it was converted to the super nintendo a hybrid of the first two turtles arcade games was also released on the sega genesis there were a number of changes and additions which i will cover at the end of this video the arcade game was a nice unlockable after completing the first episode in teenage mutant ninja turtles 3 mutant nightmare which was released for the gamecube playstation 2 nintendo ds and xbox there were a number of changes from the original arcade release including a brand new intro tune which was replaced due to licensing issues although the voices were also re-recorded although it is running under emulation the quality is not very good with lots of dropped frames and stiff gameplay that rears its ugly head at random times [Applause] [Music] tmnt turtles in time reshelve was released in 2009 for the xbox 360 and playstation 3. this is a 2.5 d remake of the original turtles in time which included enhanced graphics and online play similar to the previous titles the original voices were re-recorded by the actors who did the 2003 turtles cartoon the music has also been redone but it sounds great the opening and closing cinematics have been given a nice visual boost and they look fantastic [Applause] [Music] there were a couple of additions such as a survival mode and leaderboards since this is based on the arcade release the extra levels found in the super nintendo version are not here apparently the developers had wanted to include these in the game but nintendo has a strict block on that version of the game appearing only on their system the gameplay is pure turtle power and it feels like the arcade game only with the eye candy cranked f211 reviews at the time were not so positive calling it shallow and repetitious but i thought it really reminded me of the original arcade game it's a great way to re-experience the original arcade classic unfortunately it was de-listed in 2011 and is no longer available [Music] i've said it before and i'll say it again the coolest licensed product in my opinion would have to be the arcade 1up cabinet which featured both the original teenage mutant ninja turtles and turtles in time arcade games the two-in-one cab runs on a 17-inch lcd which is not the biggest but definitely gets the job done they have included four joysticks which allows for four player simultaneous action this is also running on emulation so it is essentially an arcade game at home but at a fraction of the cost nika released a line of action figures based on turtles and time and they look fantastic the sculpting in color really makes it appear as if they stepped out of the arcade and into your hands and 2021 teenage mutant ninja turtles shredders revenge will be released for the pc xbox live playstation network and nintendo switch this is a direct follow-up to turtles and time featuring nice large pixel graphics and the trademark four player simultaneous play dot mu who brought us the fantastic streets of rage 4 is behind this one as well so players are hopeful it's taken 20 years but it looks like we may finally get a full-on sequel and i for one can't wait teenage mutant ninja turtles 4 turtles in time was released exclusively for the super nintendo in 1992. the reason for the number four in the title is that they are placing it as a numbered sequel to the nes title teenage mutant ninja turtles 3 manhattan project back in 1992 this was considered very close to arcade perfect in terms of graphics and playability there were some tweaks to the gameplay including an actual throw move instead of just occurring at random as found in the arcade game when you throw your opponent into the screen the scaling effect is not quite as smooth but it's still there you also now have a dedicated button for running thanks to konami wanting to pad out the game's length and now takes place across 10 levels including the technodrome which was last seen in the original turtles arcade game [Music] so we're surfing and neon knight riders for change to bonus levels some other tweaks to the levels include neon knight riders being a full-on mode 7 level with plenty of twists and turns similar to f-zero [Music] there were a couple of new bosses as well such as rat king [Music] [Music] slash rocksteady and bebop and shredders robot suit [Music] this is also only two players simultaneously as opposed to four other additions to the game include a time trial mode [Music] a versus mode in which you fight against another player head to head in the best two out of three falls and a very cool color mode which lets you choose between the cartoons bright colors or a grittier down to earth palette which reminded me of the playmates toys the audio has taken a bump as well with many of the voice clips missing such as the boss taunts and april o'neil's intro and outro another thing missing is the pizza power tune which was replaced by an instrumental version of the original turtle's theme the controls feel just like the arcade game in my opinion and this was one of my favorite early super nintendo games back in 1992 [Music] a sort of hybrid version was released for the sega genesis entitled teenage mutant ninja turtles the hyperstone heist this mixes in elements from the first two arcade games though put together in a unique setting for konami's debut game on the system as the story goes shredder has stolen the hyperstone from dimension x to shrink down manhattan he taunts the turtles to come after him which indubitably is leading to a trap it's up to you to follow him with your high energy detector take down him and all of his cronies and save the day [Music] the graphics and playability appear to be lifted straight from turtles in time with only one omission and that is hurling your enemies at the screen the color palette has a much more grittier and realistic look which fits well with our radical dudes the game takes place across five levels which is a far cry from the tin found in the super nintendo version the five levels and bosses that you compete against are new york city in which you face leatherhead [Applause] a mysterious ghost ship in which you face rocksteady redder's hideout and what you have to take on tatsu the gauntlet which is a sort of boss rush seeing you have to face leatherhead rocksteady and tattoo once again before finally taking on baxter stockton [Music] and the last level is the final shell shock in which you take on both [Music] cranks and super shredder each stage level has been greatly increased in length with new sections added throughout [Music] one boss it did add that was in no other version was shredder's right hand man tatsu he appeared in the very first two live action movies the audio features some fantastic genesis music and fairly clear sound samples but a lot of the voice clips are missing there are some nice special effects littered throughout for graphical flair want you to beat shredder you are rewarded with another april o'neil newscast and a fancy trip on the turtle blimp [Music] [Music] pizza powers the controls are fantastic and it feels like you are playing the arcade game which is exactly what you want with a home conversion [Music] and that my friends is the history of teenage mutant ninja turtles turtles in time the turtle arcade games are definitely in my top five of all time including other such heavyweights as final fight and double dragon there is nothing better than having three friends along for the ride while you take down the foot plane and make shredder take his medicine this game was in pretty much every arcade i went to back in the early 90s but if you've never had a chance to try it for yourself and are a fan of the beat em up genre make sure you do you'll be glad you did if you enjoyed this video and want more history on the creation of the very first
