is our second campus and i was in the back of the room watching those men worship and i looked around these guys legitimately are yelling and screaming while they're singing it is such an incredible sight i look up and i see a there's a big tv on the wall there's a big sign that says branchville campus it's like it feel like home and maybe think oh my gosh i'm i'm so grateful that we have a community who is generous because without a generous people that wouldn't be a campus right now so seriously from the bottom of my heart from the bottom of our hearts thank you so much for being a be in church all right i don't know how many times i have to do this but every time i say it's a good day to be in church it really is a good day to be in church and that's your your chance to go amen good day and because 90 of you here today are the real deal christians the fake ones are on vacation we know where you are we will find you at the beach or whatever lake is around here okay but we will forgive you you can be sure of that now how many of you thought dave stone was speaking today you got an email from the church saying dave was speaking today that's why you're here i won't be hurt but it's a true thing let me tell you what happened i'm in charge of all the creative elements that was my job previous to becoming the lead pastor i did all the graphic design and all the weird stuff you see and so i still do most of that and i was getting that email ready and the newsletter ready and i accidentally hit instead of save draft i hit send draft and that was a draft i have for when dave stone was coming to preach and all of you got the alert that he was coming to preach so i called him i said hey man super excited about you coming this weekend and he's like well i'm in phoenix i have no idea what you're talking about i say i may or may not have sent to my entire church that you were coming and he's like well if they want to see me in bed via via the internet they can so i decided against that but i blame him for not wanting to be here today he's on vacation as well so i'm not sure if that's even true but i know that he is in phoenix maybe he's preaching there but today i'm excited to preach to you one of the messages that excites me most in the entire bible it's one of the things that when it hit me it stuck with me forever still to this day it's one of the messages that i preach on on most obscure holidays when people don't come to church like today i preach this message to a certain group of people because when the committed of the committed show up they need to hear something a little different so i've got something a little tweaked a little special for you but i want to say this next week you cannot miss church we have the biggest everybody say the biggest we have the biggest announcement we have ever had since the naming of our church next sunday it is something we've all been praying about some we're all excited about and we're excited to finally tell you show you and have concrete info to give you so you don't want to miss it and if you're watching online you're going to get to hear about it but you won't get to see a thing because we're only going to put it on that screen and you only see that screen so you'll have to come in person risk dying for the message all right so today i want to back up to a statement made by john maxwell and it goes along perfectly with today's message it says this people rise and fall to meet your level of expectation for them if you express express skepticism and doubt in others they will return your lack of confidence with mediocrity but if you believe in them and expect them to do well they will go an extra mile trying to do their best today we're going to talk about one of the biggest fights in the bible and it has everything to do with one human being they fight over one guy there's three characters in this story there's barnabas which i'll introduce you to him in a second there's paul both of those guys are apostles and then there's a guy named john mark so let me give you the three little introductions here okay number one we've got barnabas barnabas is one of the oldest disciples in the bible he predates paul he hangs out he's one of the best okay his name literally means son of encouragement his real name is joseph but he's so good at encouraging people that they change his name are any of you good at anything so much so that they change your name no no i've never been imagine okay just being addressed as like hairdresser okay like no that's not her she's just hairdresser she's so good that's her name okay his name literally is what he's good at he's the son of encouragement so here's what happens barnabas okay he's a part of the church he's a part of the early church and he goes around strengthening and teaching all the body and he meets up with paul okay when paul is a nobody he is one of the best mentors in the entire bible and we're going to see where paul is discounted where barnabas steps in and then we're going to see why these two guys who are titans get into an argument over some random obscure man this sharp disagreement has to do with a guy named john mark that's who they're fighting about they have a disagreement on how they should treat a guy who deserted them john mark all we know about him okay is that he was converted by peter he hung out with the disciples and one day randomly decides he's leaving this is too much for him he's out so john mark leaves right then we have the apostle paul okay who everybody has heard of the apostle paul okay his books he accounts for 13 of the 27 books in the new testament okay he has been read by more people in history than any other writer in the world to this day his letters have been read by more people that think about that think about how many people have have read his letters okay he is like the cream of the crop he has led more people to jesus than any other man in history but he has a flaw he has the inability to remember where he came from he can't see the value in something he once was he can only see the value in what he currently is how many of you grew up let me explain i i know i say i'm i'm hispanic in cuban a lot let me explain what cuban actually means to a bunch of white people okay cuban are basically rednecks who speak spanish right that's all we have the same habits you just have to change the jokes a little bit and i'll explain them to you because this happened in your home how many of you recognize these beautiful little dixie cups here these red little solo cubs i mean you guys even wrote a song about it in your culture okay i don't know who sings it but i've heard it okay and many of you this weekend are gonna go through these bad boys okay tomorrow how many of you are going to a barbecue have a friend having a barbecue you're doing something like that raise your hand how many of you need a friend okay i hope you guys out after church but in my house my mom saw value in two things that most people do not see value in number one my mom saw the value in a sandal okay my mom could scare anybody to death with a sandal okay that's the word chuang plata if that thing came out death was imminent to everybody who was near okay white people have the grim reaper we have a sandal okay when that thing came out it was going to do some serious damage to you the other thing was these were not disposable in our house okay only rich people did that where i came from okay how many of your friends throw these away raise your hand folks this is an interactive message here okay don't ask your friends where they got all their money from okay have so much money they can just toss this away like it's nothing like mere peasants would drink out of this okay we would write our names on them you get your little handy sharpie out you write your name on it right my mom would wash these either by hand or put them in the dishwasher every time okay i have had drinks of the same cola that has turned into penicillin came from like my fourth birthday that's daryl's cup my mom never gave up on these cups they followed you through your whole life okay you know how this is a beautiful cup by the way it's very sturdy okay but mine when you put them in the dishwasher and you let them dry they curl they don't hold drinks like they used to so now you got like half a cup right in the over you got your cup just melted a little bit more every time it was in there my mom never let go of these and this is how i know whether you're rich or not is when i go to your house the cup you hand me right if you hand me a glass i am blown away by your hospitality i'm like wow you got some serious money how'd you do that man this is real look at this this is impressive where do you guys work you own an oil mine or something but there's some of your houses i've been to i've seen the collection of azip cups and you know the best my favorite when they give you old tupperware like you're not going to know that they don't make square cups like here's your cup i'm like this never mind i'll drink it but that's the deal that she saw value in these things and these things never went away they represented two things number one a good time these cups only came out like they were china at our house this is a party where good times were going to happen in these okay so you knew if thieves were coming out a good time was going to happen but they also had somebody's name on them and what was really sad is when we'd lose a family member he still had their cup and it was crazy because you'd look at him and be like here's one for my homies you're like pouring it you know in his glass you're like i got you bro you're still here with us you'll get that later but the idea was that you have this eternal value on something that no one else sees value in right how many of you pass pennies on the ground you just leave them there right i'm not a penny passer okay i will pick up that penny and lose it with the best of them i don't know where i put it i lose it after that but i pick it up you have to see value in something that no one else sees value in my mom was a perfect example of that she never got rid of any of these things here not because we couldn't afford them but those values still left here and a lot of times what happens to paul is the same thing in this story he doesn't see value in something that was once valuable he just passes on it and we're going to pick up in the story with barnabas introducing paul to value it and it's in acts chapter 9 verse 26 it says this when he came to jerusalem paul okay his name was saul he has this amazing experience with god he's riding a donkey god kicks him off with light and now he's blind and he's like i'm jesus and he's blind and now he's in town this old man leads him to jesus and now he at that point is the biggest killer of christians of all time he's like the taliban on steroids he's a one-man wrecking crew of christians he leads bands of people who literally behead christians all over the known world this guy comes to jesus and nobody we're going to read will talk to him about jesus so it says when he came to jerusalem he tried to join the disciples he's a little thrown back but they were afraid of him not believing that he was a disciple i don't know why they were afraid of him he's only killed a couple thousand people but bartimaeus took him and brought him to the apostles he told them how saul on his journey saul becomes paul had seen the lord and that the lord had spoken to him and how in damascus he had preached fearlessly in the name of jesus so saul stayed with them and moved about freely in jerusalem speaking boldly in the name of the lord he talked and debated with the grecian jews but they tried to kill him nobody in the entire church would talk to paul nobody they only saw what they saw a killer let me put in today's perspective to you you come to church okay osama bin laden sits in the front row he gives his heart to jesus and turns to you and says where are we going to lunch you're like oh i don't know i mean i'm going to be honest you're a little sketchy yeah but i got jesus now and nobody nobody's going to take the chance you have to have the random one guy all of you would be like pastor i'll go to lunch with you oh he loves going to lunch with strangers he'll go to lunch with you here's the deal nobody will go to lunch with this guy and here comes barnabas this random guy this son of encouragement and he's like hey come with me he's like i know these guys are afraid of you but i believe what jesus did in you this is one of the craziest stories you've got to imagine that the rest of the disciples are going hey because nobody else sold this they're only taking paul's word for it they're like hey this guy's nuts okay he's just making that up he's going to try to kill us all because you know christians we got some good conspiracy theories about everything if you want a conspiracy theory tell a christian we'll feed you back something crazy so what happens is no one believes it no one will hang out with him so barnabas hangs out with him not for one day not for one year but for 14 years he takes him everywhere with him for 14 years and pours into him he not only takes him to the disciples he was raising him the entire time you know what this looks like in the church so many of us give up on young christians we're so disgusted by what they've done we can't see who they are or what they could be barnabas had a great great intuition to see what people could be what they were worth in the long term so here's what happens let me ask you this how many of you have children raise your hand how many of you expected them to walk and get a job the day they were born you push it out you're like hey lazy i've been carrying you around for nine months about time you get a job for yourself we ain't gonna feed you okay i don't know what you're thinking i'm not helping you you're on your own or your kid starts to learn how to walk you just kick them they're like oh no you're not doing that right let me show you how to do it here try like me see that see how it is get up do it again if you go less than one step i'm kicking you back down i know it seems crazy but there are young christians all the time that give their life to jesus and they're beat up by older christians that somehow forgot where they came from they forgot that it took somebody being a young christian an older christian to live life with them and show them the ropes so we get so enthralled by their story it's like you were perfect when you came out i'm blown away by parents who tell me they can't believe what their kids did i'm like i'm pretty sure you and i were just talking about something we did when we were 18. and we were laughing about it like we burnt our house down i didn't literally burn my house down but a neighbor's house i burned a piece of it i was a good kid man just couldn't prove it in proverbs chapter 22 verse 6 many of us think this only applies to our literal children but it applies to spiritual children what is a spiritual child a spiritual child is somebody who gives their life to jesus at any point in their life they're an infant in christ and needs somebody to raise them it doesn't matter if they're 40 years old they need somebody to teach them you're like well you should know how to do this no you shouldn't you know how weird it is to walk into a place and people just throwing their hands up what are you doing someone's got to teach you why that's important some of you still don't know you look at me like i'm crazy you're like well i don't know why he's doing that i'm not going to ask i want to do it as a spiritual child you want to grow and we have an entire generation in the church world we have an entire generation of fatherless young christians mentorless young christians many of you i hear this said all the time man i think we're in the end times how many of you raise your hand you believe you're in the end times okay you read the book of revelation pretty scary wars rumors of wars all that stuff right if you believe we're in the end times i'm not going to tell you whether i disagree with you or not because that's besides the point it shouldn't change your behavior but if you believe it you better live like it if we're on the last airplane out of earth we better start living like we're on the last airplane out of earth we don't live like we're in an emergency situation we're just happy we got a house but i don't see you raising any killers i don't see you inviting strange weirdos over your house you keep them at an artist's length barnabas believed in restoring people we continue in this book in the book of acts chapter 15 it says sometimes later paul said to barnabas let's go back and visit the brothers and all the towns we preach the word of the lord and see how they are doing but barnabas wanted to take john also called mark the guy i introduced you to with them but paul didn't think it was wise because he had deserted them now i don't know if paul gets what he says here he's like hey i'm not bringing that guy because that guy left us when times got tough this is what their whole argument is about the mentor and student the mr miyagi and daniel's son are about to go at it over one principle that danielson cannot get mr miyagi is like wax on wax off always daniel's like except for in this situation except for in the deserter situation no wax on wax off get out that's what's happening here is he's going no you need to understand that you cannot just get rid of somebody because of their past because barnabas always saw potential in things that people discarded you're like john mark doesn't seem like a super important guy this is all we know about him his mother was an active member of the church he was converted by peter and while on the missionary journey with these two guys the first time he just leaves that's all we know and when he tries to come back paul is indignant being like no i would rather fight with my mentor tell them to go shove it than to take this guy with me okay it says they had a sharp disagreement have you ever had a sharp disagreement at your house mine are very loud kids are like are you angry i'm like we are having a sharp disagreement it's in the bible son read it i'm not yelling at your mother she's just hard of hearing sometimes the second thing barnabas believed in that we don't believe in is this barnabas believed not only in raising people he believed in restoring people there's a lot of us in that story when we talk about him casting him out because he walked away we might not agree with that story but we do that often we might not agree with that story we might go no no paul needs to have a little bit how when was the last time you had mercy on somebody who walked out of your life instead of holding it against them see barnabas is trying to show something that all of us go through when somebody walks away we're like i don't think so baby you need to apologize okay make a big to do because i'm a big deal around here okay i don't know if you know this but you hurt me pretty bad and for that you will pay we don't believe that we don't shouldn't act that way but we do and we don't know why we do it because we have that in us how do you see people who have made mistakes how do you see people who live a life of sin you know yesterday i caught myself really mad because that whole texas thing thing's going on and i saw this obgyn on facebook and i know better than to go on facebook but i did and she's talking about how awesome abortions are and how they help and i'm just getting angry i'm just like i've got something i've got a million scriptures to back up what i'm about to say and then all sudden like a little piece inside of me said how is that going to help her i was like what's not i was like i can't look at what i see i need to see what can't be i need to see what she can become not what i see in front of me if i only focus on what i see in front of me i'm going to be angry at that but if i see what god sees in her then my perspective changes then i go from hatred to wanting to reach her and i'm going okay what if every other christian is mad at her what if i came the other way and just wrote i don't hate you i'm praying for you i didn't write that but what if i did what if i went about it the different way and stopped hating everything and telling them that they're going to hell see my my goal in life is have tons of people in my party it's pretty simple the idea is that i take as many people with the names my friends the people i love to heaven with me it's simple it's just not done very often because we get caught up in what we see we get caught up in their sin we're like oh no they're bad i'm like it is so easy to say they're bad and i'm not how many of you have ever been in a fight where you're just like one percent better than the other person admit it like you only have like one thing better than them and you're like i win and that's all you needed right i've been there man where i'm like yes i'm gonna win this one i'm gonna win this one i'm so amped up i'm like you're gonna drop it but i've got one percent better my wife's like i changed the kids every day and i was like and i did it all day today boom roasted you're done got you i win but the end of the day we lose when all we do is focus on what we see our stories should outlive us the way we treated people should be awesome to everybody else that you want to be emulated by other people people should go man i need to go to that church they're just awesome people they don't believe anything like me but they've never hated on me here's the amazing part i don't agree with hardly anybody i ever talk to i'm just not going to treat you bad because i don't agree with you it's called being an adult my goal is to reach you i'm not going to do it by bashing you over the head or celebrating when you're angry has that ever helped anybody when somebody told you to calm down you're in the middle of a fight they're like calm down oh yeah i didn't even think of that i'm better now you're right you're right that's all i need to do is calm down i feel so much better it took me forever to learn that with my wife i thought i had like magic powers like you know what you need to do calm down know what she heard you know what you need to do kill daryl okay that's what she heard why you can't deal with what you see in front of you if you only deal with what you see and not where they're going you're going to argue and be angry at the world if you stay on mission and go i'm not going to see you for what you are i see you for where we're going you're going to reach people there are people that you love that it's going to take 20 years to reach them from the gospel and you haven't ticked off one day of moving forward to that because you've been bitter angry ryan if you'll come join me you can't spend your life being bitter and angry for nine years the person one of the people who's supposed to be protecting me hurt me almost nightly for nine years as a young child and the hardest thing i had to do when i got the strength at 22 was to forgive and change my motive my motive went from hey i'm not i don't hate you i want to reach you i want to see what jesus sees in you you're like that doesn't happen that's exactly what happens in these stories that's exactly what bartimaeus did the same guy who wanted to kill him weeks earlier needs his help think about that had they met three weeks earlier paul was notorious for cutting christians heads off like and now he needs the very guy he wants to kill let me tell you something the biggest obstacle you will have to reaching people is not the other person it's getting over you and going i need to do this even if it's not comfortable we talked about confrontation last week now we're talking about you are you dying to reach other people this pointless man is what they're arguing about and let me tell you how pointless he is because paul gives up on him and goes on his merry way and has an awesome story to tell they're imprisoned they're singing paul and silas god shows up rumbles all awesome stuff and that whole time you hear nothing out of barnabas where has he been this whole time two years later here's what happens in second timothy one of paul's disciples says this only luke is with me get mark and bring him because he's helpful to me in the ministry barnabas doesn't leave mark's side he continues to restore him and now the very thing that paul and timothy and that whole clan didn't want a part of now they need him every one of you know this mark you just don't know that this is the insignificant mark matthew mark luke and john that's that mark it's one of the gospels it's one of the greatest stories ever written it's that mark that paul was giving up on who barnabas said no no so see we give credit to paul for writing 13 books of the bible we give credit to paul's disciple timothy we give credit to mark notice how barnabas has never written a chapter barnabas's greatest works weren't the miracles or the sermons but in the people he raised for jesus that was the incredible thing about barnabas there is no 13 books of the new testament without barnabas there is no mark without barnabas there is no timothy without barnabas there is no jude without barnabas how is this man such a back figure because he never lost his eye he was building the church constantly going what are you a killer i got your back what are you a loser i got your back and i'm gonna take you from where you are and what you identify as all the way to where god wants you and when everybody else even when the church tries to point their finger at you i'm going to stand in their way because paul represents the church the church comes in and condemns and pushes him down and barnabas stands in his way he says you're going to have to get through me first and i have to get through me first john chapter 15 verse 13 says greater love has no man than to lay down his life for his friend so many times we think about that and we think a bullet we're like and you jump in front you're like i did it i gave my life that's easy jumping in front of a bullet is much easier than waking up every day to lay down your life there are very few professions in life that actually have to do that police officers have to wake up every day going this could be my last one and they do it anyway firemen soldiers you know who was also supposed to live like every day is her last day a christian i'm getting so tired fearing christians talking about the end times and they're not living like it's the end times they're living like they've got plenty of time they're not telling other people about jesus they're not trying to go out of their way they're not loving on people that are hurting they're mocking them back you know who needs jesus the most right now that woman who is okay with killing babies not because she's a horrible maniac of a human being but she needs a heart change and that doesn't come through harsh words and critics and people yelling at comes through jesus and understanding that every life is precious and she won't believe it till she sees it in somebody else first somebody's gotta model it somebody's gonna spend 14 years walking alongside going hey it's okay paul doesn't preach for 12 years while he's walking alongside barnabas he doesn't say a word and then barnabas lets him loose after 12 years and he explodes on the scene who are the people at your parties man that need jesus and you're not working on them who are the people closest to you you're not praying for man you should be working every day to cross them off that calendar be like i'm one step closer i'm one day closer i've done my part jesus i've prayed i've laid down my life today for them i've acted the way i should have i've talked highly about them i don't speak down i don't push down i raise up that's my job because the hardest day is going to be let me tell you something if we are living in the last days the hardest day for me it's going to be when i see my feet floating and i see all the feet stuck to the ground i go why couldn't i do more we're not going to care about anything else today i promise you that you're not going to care about what how much money you had you're not going to care about possessions you're not going you're going to care about who's coming with you whose name's on those solo cups who's coming to that party with us with every head bowed nobody looking around every eye closed if you just say this morning daryl i want to reach as many people as i can before the end of my life it's never too late to reach people we just raise your hand real quick so i can see it so i can pray for you thank you you can put it right back down thank you thank you you want to reach us thank you you can put it right back down thank you thank you hands are going up thank you you want to reach as many people this is the most dangerous prayer i'm ever going to pray over you that god make you 100 effective at reaching people which means you're going to lay down your life willingly waking up every day going i'd it doesn't matter what shot at me i'm going to stand firm it doesn't matter who i have to stand in the way of i've got to protect i've got the shield i've got to perfect protect and defend and live like today's my last day heavenly father i pray for each person that raises their hand god i pray that you convict their heart every morning for the lost now that they would wake up going i need to pray i need to search that person out i need to speak life into them and when they see everybody else being pushed down they don't jump on the train and pushing people down that they they see something else and they see a human life a spirit of god inside no matter how dim that light is maybe the light is extinguished in that person our job is to reach out and light the flame inside of that person god and my goal for our church and every person that raised our hand is to populate heaven by living on mission with raising up reaching out going out of our comfort zone to reach people to love on them and to live life with them lord and i pray that we do that and we live like we're dying every day in jesus name and everybody said amen amen if you believe that we're going to do incredible things for god if you continue to do that we are going to do
