I feel like this is too cartoony for recently deceased US military with real families.

4th 2002 just before 5am in the cold and rugged eastern islands of afghanistan a lone cia predator drone flies high overhead while far below a single us army helicopter makes a crash landing on the snow-covered terrain next to a small hill a moment before when the helicopter was peppered by heavy machine gun and rpg fire petty officer first class neil roberts had slipped and fallen from the back of the helicopter u.s air force combat controller sergeant john chapman and five members of navy seal team 6 and he was attached to at the time quickly exit from the us army chinook helicopter straight away they come under heavy enemy fire from all directions and the group quickly become pinned down but as it's dark and the enemy has no nighttime fighting equipment the gunfire is inaccurate chapman tries to call up air support but he's unsuccessful so he decides to split away from the team and head up a nearby slope through knee and thigh deep snow towards an enemy bunker chapman then quickly establishes communication with an ac-130 gunship directing it to provide the team with close air support he also requests and coordinates a helicopter to extract the stranded team and request the ac-130 join an unmanned mq-1 predator drone already searching for roberts chapman goes first into the enemy bunker and his team follows him the bunker contains two poorly trained insurgent fighters who are armed with highly effective ak-47 assault rifles they fire wildly in his direction with little effect apart from giving away their own position next to the bunker by a large outcrop of rocks lay the dead body of navy seal petty officer first class neil roberts who had been killed in action a short time before earlier that day roberts had been taking part in operation anaconda which was an attempt to break the taliban resistance in the area his squad had been formed into a reconnaissance team aided by sergeant chapman of the us air force as their spotter the chinook helicopter they were traveling in was a special ops version the mh-47e which had increased fuel capacity and a purpose-built terrain tracking radar the helicopter was heading late at night towards the strategic mountaintop of tucker gar where they were to set up an observation post and monitor al-qaeda units in the area as the chinook flew along low and fast they suddenly and unexpectedly came under fire from out of the darkness by a group of enemy insurgents the helicopter was riddled with gunfire and then it was hit by a rocket-propelled grenade making the chinook shutter from the blast petty officer roberts who was standing near the ramp of the helicopter lost his grip and was thrown from the back it's unknown whether he fell to his death therefore dying immediately or whether he was captured by the al-qaeda fighters and executed later with a single shot to the back of the head some of the chinook's hydraulic lines had been severed in the explosion and the pilot struggled to keep control this forced them to move away from the engagement and find a safe spot to land the badly damaged helicopter the pilots managed to put the chinook down four miles away on a deserted mountaintop a short time later chapman and the remaining seal team decided to go back into the danger bravely they all volunteered to go back and retrieve robert's body now they found themselves in the middle of enemy hell territory realizing how vulnerable the team is opens fire on the bunker with his rifle before charging at it meanwhile the seal team leader is trying to get up the slope in order to support him but stumbles and falls by the time he gets to the bunker chapman has already stormed it killing both insurgents inside at almost point-blank range it's now less than two minutes since chapman and the seal team first landed together chapman and the team leader engage a second nearby bunker containing a small group of insurgents worryingly one of them is banning a pkm light machine gun and another is using a rocket-propelled grenade launcher in the crossfire an insurgent fighter is killed before chapman is hit twice in the torso and collapses onto the floor of the bunker and is thought to be dead by the team leader the rest of the seal team then move up into the boulder area and start to engage the second bunker the team leader gets out of bunker and joins up with the rest of the sea of team but the situation is quickly deemed as hopeless by the seals as more enemy insurgents move up and the seal team quickly realizes that they're in danger of being overrun by a significantly larger force weather seal stands up to fire's m60 belt bed light machine gun from the hip but is almost immediately thrown off the boulder by an enemy grenade blast and is hurled 10 feet to the ground below the position is untenable the soldier is badly wounded and the decision is finally made to retreat it's presumed wrongly at this stage that chapman is dead but in fact he's unconscious in the nearby bunker it would later be known that chapman had in fact been mortally wounded and was dying from his wounds the seal team slides down a steep snow-covered embankment and a short time later an ac-130 gunship arrives overhead and starts firing its 105 millimeter howitzer ruthlessly bombarding the hilltop this allows the seals to get off the hill and to a nearby clearing ready for an emergency extraction during this time chapman is experiencing this destructive aerial fire from his position after the ac-130 breaks off from its attack at around 5 20 am radio messages can be heard from chapman who is alive and has regained consciousness he updates the command that he's under attack by around two dozen insurgents and bravely starts to engage them despite attempts to talk to him chapman does not respond he continues fighting for the next 40 minutes by which time the sun is risen and it's now daytime he had sustained further gunshot wounds as well as injury from grenade shrapnel the enemy attempts to charge chapman's position several times but he manages to drive them back each time on one occasion a lone insurgent makes it into the bunker and engages chapman in hand-to-hand combat and though mortally wounded and after a violent struggle chapman manages to kill the man it's 6 13 a.m and chapman is nearly out of ammunition a quick response team with a paramedic is inbound and his helicopter is nearing his position chapman heroically leaves the bunker and starts firing in all directions in order to distract the insurgents from firing upon the approaching chinook but despite this an enemy rocket-propelled grenade strikes the inbound helicopter though it manages to make a successful force landing just below chapman's position as the 19 ranger quick response team exits down the ramp at the back of the helicopter several are killed as the enemy insurgents wore heavy and sustained fire on this new target at this time chapman is literally down to his last few rounds of ammunition and is shot through the heart and dies instantly eventually after several airstrikes the enemy positions are assaulted by the rangers and they kill the al-qaeda fighters and take the hill this whole event was caught on surveillance cameras from us drones and spy planes 36 year old u.s air force sergeant john chapman left behind a wife and two young daughters in 2003 chapman was posthumously awarded the air force cross for his courage selfless dedication to duty that day and extraordinary heroism but after a prolonged campaign this was upgraded in 2018 to the u.s armed services highest award for bravery and valor the medal of honor you
