heidleberg is world famous for great food and a stunning Castle however it can get a little touristy so come with us today out into the Odin and M 20 minutes away for some of the best food most authentic Villages and best castles no one has ever heard [Music] of welcome back to part two of our heidleberg series everybody yesterday we did an amazing job of seeing as much as we could in this amazing City and I'm really happy with what we managed to accomplish but you know as near from home we can't just settle with that we need to mix it up a little bit and see if we can find some long forgotten gems today will be a proper challenge too because I've been studying my maps I'm reading my 19th century German travel guide that I bought yesterday and I think I found something truly amazing hiding in plain sight just 16 km away in the small village of necac lie four castles famous for dotting the hillside in the most beautiful way I want to take the local train over to necina and Hike the five castles that I've managed to find all in a single day naturally we'll hit up some great little bakeries in cafes too but it's going to be a stretch our train leaves in just a few minutes wish us luck we very well might need it it's going to be a long [Music] day and welcome to NECA Steiner everybody door to door that was only about 20 minutes there is no reason to drive this in my mind and it was beautiful too that Fall Foliage that we're going to get to bask in today I just absolutely loved that train ride and I couldn't be more pumped for hiking if I tried so without further Ado let's leave the town behind let's leave the station behind Let's cross that River and start crushing some elevation there are castle ruins to be [Music] found what do we do about this I was expecting like a real pedestrian foot Bridge instead I think this is a lock or a weir or something like that let's go find out what it is and how we can cross the sign says we can it doesn't look like we can though okay crisis averted pedestrians can walk in and around and buy the buildings and I was right it is a lock for barges that is the coolest thing usually on this channel we only see historical locks for old tiny barges not proper modern ones so uh aren't you feeling special right now I love this stuff this is so [Music] cool and I don't want to spoil the surprise too much for later but from this vantage point in the middle of the river is a great view of the castles we'll be checking out later today it's going to be a great great day oh my God it's horrible oh no this is awful literally 2 seconds after saying we're going to have a great day the entire bridge is seethrough greates oh do you see how that ladder system is working I have never seen this before you've got a ladder and then that pipular walkway to the other ladder hey you play Assassin's Creed I couldn't do that honestly I don't like that I I do not like that at all I've never seen a double ladder pipe system [Music] before so I think now is as good a time as any to bring the map up on screen and really talk about what we do know so far and at least what we're trying to accomplish oh is that a fighter jet obviously we did start off in heidleberg where we took the train to ninak that was lovely we've walked across the bridge and we are heading over to our first bur ruina of the day but eventually we're going to retreat back down cross back into neak and do its four castles two are privately owned and two are open to the public so unfortunately we're not going to be able to see all four of them up close but you know I'm going to be doing my best to explore as much as I can nyak is also a little bit of an unknown for me it didn't look very nice when we were leaving the train station but I don't know I've been surprised before and there's only one way to find out it's definitely going to be a challenge though so wish us luck in the comments right now that we can complete all of that sure hope we [Music] can these Woods are stunningly beautiful but the signage is a little cryptic maybe some Germans out there can help me in the comments cuz I have no no idea what this is talking about and we talked about this yesterday in heidleberg all about how the architecture looks subtly different from what I'm used to in Bavaria and how a big part of that is the stone there's this absolutely stunning red stone they get in this area that they use on all of their buildings and I absolutely love it and here it is in its natural form the color palette is just so wonderful this has such a magical forest Vibe mind your head and it's a little bit steep but it's incredibly beautiful I really am so grateful to be out here today there's nowhere else I'd rather [Music] be I really wasn't expecting this at the top of the hike looks like the fortification wall is still rather intact we need to go through an iron gate how cool is that wait is there like a whole village [Music] here where even are we like what have we stumbled our way into now this is Dillsburg it's only 25 minutes away from heidleberg and yet no one seems to know about it all right I am so excited it's just over this bridge around the corner and we're going to be able to buy our tickets this is going to be awesome so here we are finally inside burgina Dillsburg and this is a small and mighty Castle essentially famous for two things it's intact medieval tower that you can climb up and Summit to walk across the curtain wall at least the part of it that still stands and it is stunning in person I'm also excited to see ruins this all dating back to the 1150s unfortunately however for me but not so much for you I have arrived a little bit in the shoulder season and they've started a renovation project on the tower so I won't be able to go into it personally which I must admit is what I was excited for but as just my luck you can still Summit the wall you can still walk across it to get those amazing views of the Neco Valley I'm just going to have to climb scaffolding with more see-through GRS but I don't know I don't think we have to go up there just yet I'm sure I can find some things in this little Courtyard to uh procrastinate with specifically this here is really neat because this Castle as we all know now is so high up so high from the river that water management was actually really difficult they had to dig a 21 M well and these benches over here the iron work is actually from a small town further up north called osbrook which is actually twinned with where my grandparents live in the UK in spondon and my granddad was actually stationed in osnar Brook at the military base when he was young long long ago H that's pretty interesting you know I take you to an almost Thousand-Year old castle and we uh look at the iron work and the benches all right guys I think I'm going to give Ben like 5 minutes to decompress and mentally prepare himself for the challenge of climbing up the scaffolding thank you because oh my God guys this Castle is so cool it's actually my first castle outside of Bavaria and the differences are really really interesting specifically the stone all the stone just has this amazing red Sheen to it and it's so sparkly when the Sun hits it at a specific angle it's beautiful none of the castles in b that I've seen have this kind of stonework and I'm just really grateful that I've gotten to live in Bavaria for 5 years to be able to notice this kind of thing that's pretty cool that's how it's supposed to look it is a beautiful Tower I'm glad they're restoring it though I like it yeah are you ready I don't think we can put off the inevitable any longer canway seethrough Gres in Vertigo I really was super excited to climb that Tower how many times have I needed to not look down already today there it goes feeling a little unstable the point is we do it anyway right guys how beautiful is this I mean people come from all over the world to see heidleberg right and it was beautiful we had an amazing day yesterday but it's these surprises these hidden gems that like no one is here like everything I do that I love there were like three old there were three old people in here earlier with impeccable taste but this is stunning this this is worth coming all the way out here too this was so worth the €2 entry fee the vertigo the stairs and the hike to get here I've had an amazing time but I am really hungry we need to go get ourselves some lunch but we're never completing this challenge [Music] [Music] I don't think my heart nor my stomach could take it if we walked by and didn't go in this fantastic little Ki and sweet shop the cookies look incredible and I think they might just satiate me on the hike back down I am so excited for you to try this I know me too a pastry from B venberg my first one m is that good okay so I was a little concerned that this would be super hard and crunchy a little bit like the Scotty but it's actually super soft on the inside there's just a lot of awesome stuff going on in here there are nuts dried fruit there's all of the sugar on top it's kind of got that like old World charm going on with a lot of the sweetness coming from the dried fruits within but the powdered sugar on top adds a really nice sweetness to it this is a pretty beautiful place to have a snack as well mhm I haven't seen this in many places in Germany so when you're in the region you should definitely keep your eye out for this but for now I'm going to enjoy this on our hike back [Music] [Music] down [Music] Yep this is [Music] fantastic Nea steinach is so interesting walking back from the castle along the main road near the Hal bun Hof it just really wasn't that nice and I was feeling a little dismayed but I'll tell you what no don't be dismayed by the ugly ugly road we all know how much we hate cars on this channel but the moment you descend down and you get closer to the river oh my word this town is gorgeous specifically the restaurant I want to go to is a cafe in their local Museum it looks very quirky it looks very fun and the food looks brilliant let's go eat somehow the food tasted even better than it looked a truly fantastic hearty yet healthy meal perfect for a day of hiking unfortunately though this restaurant deserves far more time than we have to give it today so just as we planned last week in heidleberg we're going to have to follow up this glorious adventure with another video a complete hleb food tour please then make sure you are subscribed and sharing the Channel with your friends so you don't miss out the food scene here really blew us away it's also worth noting that the cafe Museum that we've stopped in is all about the geology and the castles that were built from those RS this whole area is a UNESCO world heritage site because of how many castles there are we're seeing as many as we can but if you go a little bit further down the river continuing on towards stutgart there are up to around 60 or so along this River alone it is incredible and you know I love a good diarama the museum itself is small local specific and free so that's a near from home recommendation if I've ever heard of one that was absolutely fantastic it really hit the spot we have four castles to see I mean two to look at and two to really explore and I want to walk near this River we need to start making good time if we were spending more time here in necro I would hit up this Beer Garden in a heartbeat but not today unfortunately as we start to try to cross off the rest of the castles from our list I have been saying that two of them are indeed privately owned so you can't really go up to them you can't really see them but I did bring the Drone maybe we throw that in the air get a few good aerial views and then I'll tick them off and we can begin hiking to the next set of [Music] ruins [Music] that was so much fun and now we have seen the two private castles which means we're now making good time we just need to get to the trail head and get hiking I think we can still see both of them today oh my god let's [Music] go two breathtaking hikes in a day what are the chances pretty high if you're traveling with near from home this might just be a mething but I always get so nostalgic walking by these dry stack stone walls covered in mass and I know they're popular all around Europe they're populate in Germany but they just remind me of Home growing up in like a small village surrounded by Farms I was running outside practically every day near these things I'm just not trying to scramble all over them anymore just appreciating them from a distance what a grand entrance to a glorious castle and we have it entirely to ourselves in general this actually reminds me so much of the castle that we saw oh so many hours ago this morning in the way that it's a big tower and an amazing curtain wall walking along the wall though let's not lose sight of the forest for the trees because looking out over the river you can actually see where we were this morning as well what's been wild is that all day I've been able to see every castle that we're going to at any moment it's been really weird and a fun little historical fact that separates this Castle from all the others we've seen today is that this one was built illegally quite literally the bricks were laid before the land was bought but he didn't get in that much trouble and yes I am telling telling you all of those fun facts and stories and looking out over the river as procrastination for going up more seethrough greated stairs but at least we get to go up into a tower this time that's true at least I hope we do a what on Earth am I looking at this is insane let's go up the stairs you know not to knock the Middle Ages Camille but the ston walk is a bit shoddy that's why I love it so much because it's shoddy yeah it's like really funny and depressing I feel like people think that the Middle Ages was a much higher equilibrium Society than it was it was not it was not and it shows this is a nice view with the windows yeah actually looking you okay I have a stinging nettle I think in my I have an innate eye for them having grown up in the UK Camille has not so you've been stung a lot today off camera I just like walked straight into a bush of them and was like oh very American I'll stop procrastinating all right I was just trying to teach you about medieval windows and for some reason as a person who does get a bit of vertigo and hates see-through greates I also do it onehanded holding like a three PB camera at arms length I'm very smart whoa oh this is awesome wow can you go into both yes nice this is so cool inside a medieval Tower though technically this was retrofitted during the Renaissance so it's not purely medieval it's not bad and when you get to the second tower there is one reading Nook that is semi-usable the only one left in the whole castle that you can come to you can sit in and you can gaze out of I'm going to need to descend now wish me luck this is awful we're so high up I literally can't fit my feet onto the steps they are so short and yet again I continue to go on stairs with my arm outstretched and a camera at the end we have less than an hour until actual Sundown this Castle has been absolutely amazing but it's time to say goodbye and return to hinterberg right about now Welcome to our last burgina of the day and we might have been saving Best For Last whereas all of our other Castle Rin have been fantastic towers with beautiful curtain walls this this is something else a full fortified complex we do not have very much time to explore until the Sun finally Fades oh how cool and that looks like a beautiful castle entrance right off the bat the layout of this Castle is really quite striking and I'm not a historian I'm just just an Enthusiast but this to me seems like a really great representation of a classic Martin Bailey Castle the lines the circles the Rings they're all so distinct you can really feel the different areas unlike the other castles that we've been going to the road here leading from the main entrance up to this more fortified inner Courtyard signals that I think we're in the Bailey let's go explore the mot now we're in the mot which I think think would make this the keep and I even spot the well let me know in the comments if Germans or the Germanic castles didn't follow that pattern like British ones often did but this seems like a really classic Castle what a lovely place to kind of start bringing this video to a close for the last major tent Poole activity of the day honestly I think any one of the things that we've done today would make the perfect day trip from but Camille earlier was mentioning it and she's completely right if you had just gone to the train station hikes up that big hill to the wonderful Village and the first castle ruin that would have been a great day if you just come here and gone up on Castle Road to these things W that would have been a great day too but me I'm glad to have done everything I could to help you out at home so in the end I have no problem calling this day trip a success it was a proper Adventure I didn't know what I was getting myself into but sometimes luck is on your side and everything goes to plan today couldn't have gone better I really do hope you have enjoyed watching this video a 10th as much as I've enjoyed making it if so then you know what to do you need to like the video you need to comment you need to share it with your friends and help the channel grow because the algorithm doesn't really like things like this I don't begrudge most travel YouTubers for sticking to the pretty worn in at this point path that's what gets you the money and keeps the lights on so I begrudge no one but that's not the Channel I want to have I want to do things like this give us a tip if you think we've earned it subscribe if you haven't already watch our main heidleberg video If you haven't and you know if you've loved this there's so much more for you to watch so thank you for watching and I will see you in the next video wherever that might be [Music] and I did get my beer at the schan and Garten even if it comes in small
