also has a long history of Haunting surrounding some of its most frequently visited memorials over the years Rosel has become a hot spot for paranormal activity with visitors and staff alike having strange encounters on the Cemetery grounds and inside the mass of Mausoleum where 10,000 people are laid to rest in this video I wander through the winding Pathways of Rose Hill Cemetery in Chicago and explore the haunted stories behind some of its most famous monuments I also cover some of the cemetery's early history and showcase some of its fascinating structures that still stand [Music] today in the 1850s the city of Chicago was facing an epidemic of chalera that took the lives of thousands of people the death rate was high and the city was running out of room to bury the Departed but that was only part of the problem before Rose Hill Cemetery existed those who perished from disease were buried in The Old City Cemetery along the lakefront in what is now Lincoln Park the cemetery's close proximity to Lake Michigan combined with elevated water levels caused residents and health officials to fear the bodies would pollute the groundwater with disease a petition brought forth by concerned residents along with the testimony of Dr John Rous contributed to the need for a new Cemetery in the opening of Rose Hill in 1859 in the years that followed thousands of people were exhumed from the old city cemetery and moved to Rose Hill by train using an elevator to lower the caskets into the cemetery sadly thousands of people interred in the former city cemetery were never relocated to Rose Hill and remain buried under the Lincoln Park Zoo in other areas of the park one of the most impressive structures at Rose Hill Cemetery is the massive Gothic Gat house at the entrance the historic Limestone entrance in Bell Tower built in 1864 was designed by famous architect William Boyington Boyington also designed the Chicago water tower one of the only buildings downtown to survive the Chicago Fire of 1871 the historic gate has also been the scene of ghost sightings and a bizarre encounter in 2015 Cemetery visitors have reported seeing the ghost of a young girl running past the gate but when anyone looks for the girl she is nowhere to be found visitors have also reported seeing the girl looking out the gates office Windows below the Bell Tower the ghost is believed to be filamina Boyington the granddaughter of William Boyington the architect of the cemetery's gate it was said that filamina loved to play outside the Gat house during its construction in 1864 but her life was tragically cut short when she suddenly passed away from ponia before the gate was finished the ghost of a girl isn't the only strange event to occur at the cemetery's entrance in the summer of 2015 at 11:30 at night a couple had a bizarre encounter when driving on Rose Hill Avenue towards the entrance as the car approached the cemetery the couple was shocked to see a clown standing in front of the gates waving to the driver who recorded the whole event the clown climbed over the tall 7t gate and waved to the driver one last time before running off into the darkness of the cemetery although the bizarre encounter isn't paranormal the thought of a creepy clown running around a cemetery at night is still quite disturbing Rose Hill Cemetery has thousands of mausoleums but one that draws a lot of visitors is the one for Jacob Franks the mausoleum is known not only for the ghost that once appeared there but also for the infamous murder case behind it starting as early as the 1920s Cemetery workers and visitors reported seeing the ghost of a boy near the Jacob Frank's Mausoleum the boy was always seen from a distance and when anyone tried to approach him he would disappear the sightings occurred for decades and continued all the way into the early 1970s before abruptly coming to an end the ghost was identified as Bobby Franks a young boy who was the victim of a terrible crime in the 1920s he was also laid to rest inside the Jacob Franks Mausoleum on May 24th 1924 Bobby Franks was abducted by Richard L and Nathan leopo the sons of two of Chicago's wealthiest families at the time lob ended Bobby Frank's life in a rental car and the evil Duo disposed of the body in a Culver but it was discovered the next day along with L's glasses which were used to prove his guilt in court Leopold and lber spared the death sentence but received life in prison for the terrible crime in 1936 while incarcerated lob was attacked in the prison's bathroom by an inmate wielding a straight Razer and died a short time later from his injuries Leopold was paroled in 1958 and lived out the rest of his life in Puerto Rico until he died from a heart attack in 19 71 after Nathan Leopold's death the ghost of Bobby Franks was never seen again suggesting his Spirit was finally at rest knowing his killers were gone Rose Hill Cemetery has many haunted Legends and fascinating Graves but one of the most photographed memorials is the monument for Francis Pier Stone and her infant daughter concealed inside a glass box the lifelike marble statue was carved in Rome in 1856 and originally sat in the Chicago City cemeter before it was moved to Rose Hill along with the mother and daughter one Legend says the handcar statue is a replacement for an original that was lost at sea on a sunken ship but that was later proven to be untrue another story says the mother died while giving birth to her daughter but that was also proven to be false Francis the mother passed away in 1854 at the young age of 20 not long after giving birth to her daughter who was also named Francis Baby Francis was only 8 months old at the time of her passing the mother is said to have died from tuberculosis but the cause of death remains unknown due to the records being destroyed in the Chicago Fire of 1871 the glass encase Monument also has a haunted Legend behind it the legend says that on the anniversary of the mother's death the glass box fills with mist however some believe the Mist is likely from condensation and changing temperatures still though many people visit the monument on the anniversary hoping witness the ghostly Mist in the glass box another grave in Rose Hill Cemetery that draws a lot of visitors is the unique Monument for Lulu fellows like the monument for Francis Pierce Stone the grave features a marble statue concealed in a case to protect it from the elements unfortunately though the statue was previously left uncovered for many years and suffered damage to the nose and one of the hands Lulu fellows was an elocutionist or spoken word performer but sadly she met a tragic end at a young age in 1883 she contracted typhoid fever and passed away only 11 days later at the age of 16 many people who visit her grave site leave toys and some even deposit money through a hole in the top of the plexiglass box many people who visit Lulu fellow's grave have reported smelling flowers even in the dead of winter when no flowers are present at the grave site another haunted Legend similar to Francis Pier Stone says the Box fills with mist in over the years Cemetery workers and visitors have also reported seeing the ghost of a girl near the grave site which is believed to be Lulu fellows along the north side of the pond and Rose Hill Cemetery sit several elaborate mums one of which belongs to Charles Daws the 30th Vice President of the United States under Calvin kulage right next door to Charles da is Darius Miller in his Egyptian theme Crypt which has a fascinating Legend behind it Darius Miller was a wealthy president president of a Chicago railroad company whose untimely death is often said to be the result of King tutt's curse old Legends claimed that Miller was part of the expedition that open King tutt's tomb but this claim was proven to be false since Miller actually died in 1914 from appendicitis 9 years before the tomb was opened in 1923 the legend was likely fueled by the maoams Egyptian architecture which was very common in the 1920s at the time of Miller's death another Legend says a blue light glowes underneath the door of the Darius Miller Crypt early in the morning the glowing blue light has allegedly been seen by Cemetery staff and only appears in the morning hours of the month of May across the street from the pond not far from Darius Miller's Egyptian maum is the May Chapel built in 1899 the historic Chapel features stunning stonework and Mosaic ceiling tiles above the carriage porch in the back of the chapel is the underground receiving Vault where the ghost of a man was allegedly seen by the vault's door the ghost is said to be a former caretaker who worked at the cemetery for many years before he was murdered in his home nearby the historic vault is fully intact and played an important role in the early days of the cemetery the receiving Vault was once used as a holding facility for the dead when the ground was too Frozen for burial digging as many as 100 bodies at a time were temporarily stored in the vault during the winter months and it was also used during the construction of Rose Hills Community maum built in 1914 the community melum at Rose Hill Cemetery is the largest of its kind in the state of Illinois with 10,000 people in tuned inside its walls the massive two-story Mausoleum has long endless corridors and it isn't uncommon for people to get lost while exploring it each hallway branches off into another wing and the deeper into the building you explore it's easy to lose your sense of direction even during my visit I almost got lost twice while exploring the old section of the building on the second floor the interior of the cemetery's mausoleum is truly a work of art the massive building features White marble throughout with beautiful stained glass windows inside the cryts as well as a skylight on the second floor the main attraction in the maalim is the stunning memorial for millionaire John G shed who passed away in 1926 shed became president of Marshall Fields but he's mostly known for donating millions of dollars to the city City of Chicago to build a Shed Aquarium the maum is also known for a haunting involving mail order Tycoon Richard Sears whose family crypt is located on the second floor near the memorials for John G shed and Montgomery Ward in life Montgomery Ward and Richard Sears were bitter business rivals and died only one year apart with Ward dying first in 1913 a man wearing a top hat believed to be the ghost of Sears has been seen wandering the hallway near Montgomery Wards Crypt visitors have also reported hearing Footsteps in the hallways near the Sears tomb when no one is there although I didn't see a ghost or hear anything unusual inside the mausoleum I had a very unsettling feeling while exploring the building alone in front of the community Mausoleum at Rose Hill Cemetery is a grave that has sparked a mix of curiosity and controversy due to the 666 death date and unusual Epitaph the lid of this sarcophagus often referred to as the devil's grave contains the following inscription from Darkness he came in darkness he lived to Darkness he returned and from Darkness he will be reborn to a better time it should be noted that an obituary does exist for the man laid to rest here but some people have said the man is actually still alive and allegedly an artist and vampire Enthusiast who had the grave built as an art piece whether the mysterious tomb is empty or not the unique grave is C ly interesting and continues to Fascinate visitors have you ever visited Rose Hill Cemetery in Chicago do you believe the cemetery is haunted leave a comment below and let me know your [Music]
