part of the military buildup in the Pacific the Enterprise spent much of 1941 ferrying Army Air corps fighters to bases in Guam and Wake Island on November 28 she left Pearl Harbor carrying a and Marcus Islands under Admiral William F Bull Halsey in April 1942 another Yorktown class carrier the USS Hornet Laden with U.S army B-25 bombers lashed to its deck made its way towards the Japanese home Islands their mission to hit topio in a surprise raid as payback for Pearl Harbor with the Hornets Flight Deck occupied the Enterprise provided the combat Air Patrol that protected the task force it was the Enterprise that first noticed the Japanese Patrol boat forcing the fleet to divert its course to avoid detection when another Patrol boat was spotted the decision was made to launch the bombers by Admiral Halsey who was using the Enterprise as his flagship Colonel James Doolittle and the rest of his Crews took off from the Hornet nearly twice the distance previously anticipated from their targets once the bombers lifted off the Enterprise and the rest of the task force broke off and made their way back to Pearl Harbor less than a week after arriving the Enterprise sailed out again making full speed towards the ongoing Battle of Coral Sea there other American carriers including the Lexington and the Enterprise's sister ship Yorktown were engaging the Japanese though the Enterprise arrived too late for the battle and turned back in May preparations were made to blunt an expected Japanese thrust towards the strategically vital island of Midway joined by The Hornet and the Yorktown along with supporting ships the Enterprise engaged the Japanese Fleet in one of the most decisive Naval battles in history at the Battle of Midway planes from the Enterprise sank two Japanese carriers and helped in the sinking of a third the Japanese would lose four carriers that day though the Yorktown would also be sung after a month-long overhaul the Enterprise steamed towards the South Pacific she provided cover for the amphibious Landings at Guadalcanal in the Solomon Islands while there a Japanese fleet was spotted and the Enterprise and other American ships raced to engage between August 24 to 25 the battle of the Eastern Solomons the Japanese lost a light carrier though the Enterprise received three bomb heads killing 44 and wounding 75. thanks to the capable damage control parties the damage was contained and she was able to continue operations returning to Pearl for repairs the Enterprise was back in Action by that Autumn and participated in the Battle of Santa Cruz on October 25th to the 27th once again damaged she still remained afloat and took on planes from the sinking USS Hornet in spite of its damage the Enterprise was the last operational carrier in the Pacific Fleet repaired while underway the Enterprise participated in the naval Battle of Guadalcanal and the Battle of Reynold Island in the spring of 1943 the Enterprise was outfitted with anti-torpedo blisters along the hull Enterprise spent the rest of the year raiding Japanese installations sinking many ships and supporting numerous amphibious Landings in 1944 American forces invaded the Marianas prompting the Japanese to attempt to disrupt operations at the Battle of the Philippine Sea pilots from the Enterprise along with a number of other carriers shot down hundreds of Japanese planes crippling Japan's Naval Aviation for the rest of the war the Enterprise then participated in the Battle of leighty Gulf the largest naval battle in history where her aircraft struck at all three prongs of the Japanese effort to disrupt The Landings of the Philippines that winter Enterprise was overhauled again and her air Crews were trained for night Ops making it the only ship capable of night operations in February of 1945 her Air Group participated in raids on Tokyo before she sped South to support the invasion of Iwo Jima after operations there concluded she once again launched attacks on the Japanese home Islands before covering The Landings on Okinawa during this operation Enterprise was crippled after being hit by a pair of kamikazes the second of which caused the forward elevator to launch 400 feet into the air this damage forced the Enterprise to return to port for repairs and the war ended before she could return to action Enterprise then spent the next few months ferrying servicemen back home from Pearl Harbor before being transferred to the Atlantic where she also ferried Personnel back from the war in Europe with no longer any need for her service the Enterprise was decommissioned in 1947. in spite of efforts to save the ship as a museum funding proved insufficient and in 1958 the Enterprise was scrapped over the course of her service the Enterprise became the most decorated ship in American history earning 20 Battle Stars was the first aircraft carrier to earn the presidential unit citation and the naval unit commendation its air Crews shot down 911 enemy planes and sunk 71 ships and damaged scores more in spite of being scrapped the Enterprise's Legacy lived on in 1961 another carrier CVN 65 was commissioned the world's first nuclear-powered aircraft carrier it served until its decommissioning in 2017. another carrier designated CVN 80 will also bear that name and is scheduled to launch in 2025. there is another Legacy of cv6 in 1966 TV Creator Gene Roddenberry needed a name for a ship to boldly go where no man has gone before he could think of no better name than USS Enterprise thank you
