The Greatest Game You Don't Remember

it's November 16th 2014 and the New England Patriots are taking on the Indianapolis Colts on a Sunday night where the world believed we were going to see an historic matchup between two great quarterbacks Tom Brady and Andrew Luck although that couldn't be more further from the truth coming into this game the Patriots identity was obviously passing the ball while also being one of the worst rushing teams in the league having six of their first nine games be under 90 rushing yards and when you look at the backfield of this team it makes sense that these are the results you're getting here's the game by game leader in carries going into this game with Steven Ridley being the featured back for most of these games being the only running back to crack 20 plus carries in a game although you'll notice after week five Ridley wasn't the top running back for the next 3 weeks that's because unfortunately Ridley would tear his ACL in week five opening up opportunity for Jonas Gray to get touches who became the featured back after just one game having the most carries on the team week eight and week nine but no one in the world could predict that Steven Ridley getting injured would cause what happened during this Sunday night game Jonas Gray would once again get the start for this game and I want to emphasize that Jonas Gray the 24-year-old undrafted rookie that only had one career start under his belt and here is what he did this game four second and goal on the ground and trying to get his way into the end zone and does for the touchdown is Jonas Gray take that a first and goal from the eight and look at way working his way down of the the one yd line between gaining three and five yards and here he goes again with a little shift to the left and into the end zone for his second touchdown Fleming rookie out of Stanford here's gray again breaking tackles 182 on the ground more here to the outside gray cuts it back has the first down one of them and they are pounding these guys looking for his third touchdown of the night and he has it got him and they give it to Gray and gray for the fourth time tonight 37 attempts 201 yards and four touchdowns that's a statline that only six players have achieved in the Super Bowl era a list that includes Derk Henry Barry Sanders and Clinton poris now most people in the NFL World believe that the Patriots just found a gem in Gray but one mistake may have ruined all of that everyone knows the Patriots are an incredibly Rich franchise having one of the greatest coaches and quarterbacks in NFL history while also winning three Super Bowls together at the time and Bill bich is obviously known for being a Stern coach that sticks by his rules and doesn't roll over for anyone especially not an undrafted rookie the following week after his 200 yard performance Jonas would show up late to a practice practice and in any level of football that's unacceptable in my personal experience if you were late to practice you wouldn't be able to play the first quarter but this is the NFL not high school so Jonas Gray would not get benched for the first quarter or even the first half gray would get benched for the entire next game a healthy DMP coming off a 200 yard four touchdown game and that would be the regular going forward with gray only receiving a total of 20 carries for the rest of the season his final stats from That season look like this seemingly getting no real game time outside of that Sunday night game especially when you look at it like this he basically did his whole season production in one game as he did in the rest of the season combined and this trend will continue for The Following Season Jonas would be released by the Patriots on September 5th 2015 and will go on to play for two teams this season the Dolphins and the Jaguars putting up 45 carries 176 yards and z touchdowns in eight games and this would be the last we would see of gray in the NFL being released on October 24th 2016 by the Jaguars finishing his career with 588 yards and five touchdowns to put into perspective how low that number is here are some notable players to have more than 588 rushing yards in their career Amir Abdullah his rookie season Curtis Samuel a wide receiver Elijah Maguire and Bishop seni pretty wild I know but I really want to show you just how crazy a performance like this was so I'll put it this way here's a list with the lowest career yards of every running back with a 200 yard game and when we look all the way down here with by far the lowest yards Jonas Gray the biggest one game Wonder in NFL history but have you ever heard of such a thing called a three- game wonder I'm sure most of you watching this video are familiar with the name Jay aay Dolphins and Eagles running back during the late 2010s and he mostly known for his sophomore season where he made the Pro Bowl and put up nearly 1300 yards in eight touchdowns but this was no ordinary Pro Bowl season by a running back in fact it's one of the weirdest Seasons you'll see by any player aay was a fifth round pick in the 2015 draft and didn't receive any real burn his rookie season totally only 49 carries and appearing in nine games but after a 1 in4 start in 2016 the Dolphins were looking for some type of spark on offense and Jay would give them all that plus more over the next two games aay would total over 400 yards and three touchdowns backto back 200 yard performances in his second and third career start becoming only the fourth player in the Super Bowl era to do such a thing but this historic run wouldn't end after just two games because in week 16 aay would add another 200 yard game in the record books putting his total at three on the season that's more 200 yard games than CMC Todd Gurley Marshon Lynch Aran Foster and lesea McCoy combined and with the ji having three 200 yard games in one season that would put him second all time trailing only the great Earl Campbell with four in a season now I want to blindly show you a player stats and I want you to try to guess the player and here they are about 650 yards four touchdowns and 54 yards per game now I know this is a tough one because this can literally be anybody but what if I told you this is actually J a for the other 12 games of the Season you know the expression hot or cold players in the NBA well AI took that to the extreme in his career he had the same amount of 200 plus yard games as he did games finishing in between a 100 and 199 yards he was basically either dropping 50 points or five points no in between these three games accounted for nearly 50% of his rushing yards this season a literal historic mark since 2016 here are the running backs to have the highest amount of yards come from their top three rushing games with Todd Gurley being the highest percentage on this list and he's still over 12% less than aii was when you have three performances like this in one season it's almost impossible to call it a fluke but that was exactly the case for AI because after this season Jay wouldn't find much success in the NFL playing only three more seasons totaling just over a th000 rushing yards in that time time putting his career rushing yards at 2546 that means those three games from 2016 account for nearly 25% of his career yards not a one or a two but the only three game W
