for this video we're going to take a look at gravity wheels there are many types the base carro wheel is one of the more common that you see on YouTube it was invented in 1150 by an Indian mathematician and an attempt to create a perpetual motion machine the wheel consisted of curved tilted spokes partially filled with Mercury the idea being that once you induced rotation mercury would flow from one side of the spoke to another creating an equilibrium of continuing rotation this one in particular is composed of salt mixed with water and plastic bottles attached to a bicycle wheel with zip ties if you analyze it closely what's actually causing the wheel to rotate as an air hose just outside of the screen the sound was cut to cover that up but there is a segment of the video where little boy comes running up to the wheel and you see the air from the hose blowing is sure there's another one from a different channel that's owned by the same person in this video you can hear the air hose when he moves the camera close to the wheel and the sound subsides as he moves it way here's another example of one that's rotating by the use of an air hose this particular channel has quite a few supposed perpetual motion devices some are obvious fakes and some are less obvious but they're all nicely done and the videos are fun to watch I'm not pointing us out to attack either of these youtubers they're just doing what they do and making money off the channels in analyzing graphic wheels though it's important to detail how they work or fail to let me explain why these designs fail too here's a basic diagram of what the liquid in the containers is doing as the wheel is spun if you remove each bottle that cancels itself out because of its equal weight and balance you're left with these as you see the weight is on the opposite side of the supposin rotation meaning this design won't work in the methods attempted in the previous video clips so I decided to experiment with a different design for the gravity wheel I've seen similar designs to the one I'm putting together that simply don't work but I decided to give it an honest try to see if I could come up with something that might work or at least might give someone else ideas to draw from should they decide to attempt to build one their self it's fun to design and build these things regardless purely for the pleasure of experimentation and part of the framework for this I can use for another device that I intend to build on a later date so some of the parts will be interchangeable and I'll have a better idea how to build the other device from the experience I gained building this one I initially tried gluing plastic cylinders to a Plexiglas rotor that would house weighted arms while experimenting with the rotor assembly I decided it wouldn't spend smooth enough to accurately test the device so I scrapped that and decided to mount the weighted arms on a bicycle then it limited the need to build and find a bearing and gave me a solid balance field to build the rest of the device from I used square lemon pipe a piece of wood and these angled shelf holders to put together an assembly to hold the wheel in place I wanted to keep the weighted arms inexpensive in case I needed to tweak the design later so I bought a couple of packs of these paint mixers inexpensive hinges and thin square wooden pole to assemble the arms a half inch diameter metal pole to cut into 1 and 1/2 inch pieces for the weights a few screws nuts and bolts a couple boxes of assorted springs I picked up I picked up most of the parts from Home Depot with the exception of the springs and some zip ties I picked up from Harbor Freight this is a basic diagram of how the weighted arms are put together I tested the wheels with the springs in this direction first as you can see you can simply move one arm over the top of the device and the wheel moves so if you found a way to keep the arms in this position dropping faster the wheel would probably rotate I tried flipping the springs in the opposite direction and tested it this way this angled the arms in the other direction enough that you could no longer move the arm as before to move the device in the same direction though you could achieve the same result if you move the arm in the other direction this is a common trait of these types of designs if you study them this isn't something out of the ordinary they tend to balance themselves out to zero gain in motion and stay in a position of rest I also try the design with no Springs this method worked the least if I were to experiment with this design further I would use aluminum pieces for the weighted arms the wood is far too flimsy for extensive testing now if you find a way to cause one of the weighted arms to drop faster it's possible the wheel could spend continuously part of the reason I use the metal weights was so I could attempt using a magnetic gate to assist and move in the arm in place faster I tested this method briefly but didn't spend a great deal of time with so I won't say it's impossible but it would probably require some thought in effort the cheaper parts I used are good for figuring out the design but impractical for proper testing the arm should all stand upright like this one but as you can see the wood warps pretty quickly this is the way I would alter the design to give it a better chance of working even with the aluminum parts I don't think it would work without the addition of a magnetic ramp to create an effect similar to that of a magnetic accelerator the metal cylinders would place the steel ball and the magnets would need to be aligned in an arc shape to create a ramp that pulls away the cylinder at the right moment to combine momentum and gravity in order to break away from the ramp I believe that would be the best method to make this design work I may test it out at some point that I'm sharing the information in case someone else would like to give it a try most gravity wheels make use of gravity alone to attempt to induce rotation I believe you need to apply leverage or the use of magnets to have a better chance of achieving success while I believe it might be possible to build a self rotating field that uses gravity to induce rotation it would be a very delicate process to design a building you need a wheel that's properly balanced and a high quality bearing to even properly test a design the parts need to be precision made assembled accurately smooth and fluid and move the design would need to be smart and very well thought-out this is one of the best know'st designs that might work it's also suggested that with the overall size so that the wind might be aiding in its rotation but it's an engineering marvel all the same as always thanks for watching and do great things [Music] [Music]
