tonight on the show I'll be having the most oscar-nominated actress of all time but who will it be the nominations are Meryl Streep in The Devil Wears Prada little Street in the French Lieutenant's woman street in the Iron Lady we are starting the new year with a bang I couldn't be more excited because yes my favorite actress of all time the great Meryl Street is the loads on the shower the always wonderful james mcavoy is joining us we've got music hot new Irish star who's here so genuinely excited to be talking to Meryl Streep she's appearing in a spectacular musical film into the woods now emitters of all sorts of classic fairy tales Meryl plays the evil witch have you ever seen such a scary character in a fairy tale have you fairy tale favorites including Little Red Riding Hood well I wonder what frightening sites you'll see in the woods what Big Boy friends have got is not the only musical Merrill's being and of course her biggest grossing film ever was Mamma Mia and in the film Merrill's character has to work out which one of three men is the father of her child and you do think like why do the men like her so much huh Meryl oh it's extraordinary she's been in so many great films I think she's probably one of the few stars who has never been in a massive Turkey although she did come close Mark Ruffalo on to the show he's appearing in the new film Foxcatcher where he plays an Olympic wrestler and if you don't know what an Olympic wrestler looks like here's one not sure what he's looking for but I'm guessing he's found it James McAvoy co-stars there at the x-men atonement and he was also mr. Tumnus in the Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe whoo doesn't that look chilly it looks chilly doesn't it looks ready chilly chilly I said it looks chilly I wonder if there's anywhere in Britain that's been that frosty it's a fairytale come true you know it's good right good yes a big factor to James and Mark but the first time you are you have you just mean you've just been at the premier mixing with people yeah stars that are upsetting I'm not the premier did you mingle do you do the autographs do you do the photographs nobody wants an autograph anymore stand there while they they get it and then they don't like it I've never asked can we just do another one their whole face ready and yes takes a long time I've seen online you do selfies with celebrities yes occasionally yeah well it was one of the two of them vidi-vidi sent there oh yeah two there well that's his camera I I don't know how to work it but the thing with people take photographer really persistent like Mark didn't you have the thing were you in New York going to a I was in Toronto Oh - Ronson and I was chased for two blocks and the guy said he's letting me get out of a cab and I was two blocks away from the restaurant I was going to so he parked his car and started following me and he caught me two blocks later to ask if he could do a selfie and then his phone died I asked if you could do a selfie with my phone like so James cuz you're about to be in a play in the West End so stage doors do you have a policy for the stage door oh yeah try and be a good guy you try and talk to everybody and see every single person what do you really do the audience are leavin and no you trying to be a good guy no actors but you can be there for quite a long time but it's nice to try see everybody but then sometimes people get disappointed when they come from atony because in between to show days you've got an hour and a half to yourself and all that and you don't go out to go see everybody and they get the right ass sometimes yeah but do you have proof that they've been to see the play yeah that's another thing when people go like yeah I'd love to play love to play now obviously you were in was in Leicester Square the premier no it was at the Curzon Mayfair scale because of course it's the premiere of into the woods which opens tonight if you want to go see it and you should because it is a terrific movie it's it's great and we thought we'd seen you play everything but first which bitches my first wish but I hear you went through a phase you've got offered a lot of witches when I was 40 when I turned 40 I was offered 3 which is in one year and it was sending me a signal I felt and how they felt about people turning 40 so I felt bad and I and it made me sort of I had a like a little my back up you know and so no I didn't want to play them so lots changed in the last five years that was so smooth Mark Ruffalo it never works like that but here's the thing you're not just any witch you're which kind of sets the whole story in motion yeah she's sort of she well it's Stephen Sondheim so it's a complicated witch you know it's not just straight on evil if she's motivated by love but for her daughter and she wants to keep her safe so she puts her Rapunzel up in a tower I mean what mother wouldn't exactly Stephen Sondheim he's written a song especially for you he did and I said well I'm dying to hear it and he said we'll come to my townhouse I went with the director and he played it for me and he sang it for me I could steal it was great and it sort of showed me what he wanted to convey in the song and at the end he handed me the sheet music and I said would it be too odd if I you know asked you to autograph it and he said of course of course and he took it back and he pulled out that beautiful Mont Blanc pen and he wrote don't it up and while we're blowing smoke which is a huge congratulations Golden Globe nomination it's your 29th Golden Globe nominee now two well-oiled machine sort of you know stylists and this and that he here did it but back when you started going back in kind of The Deer Hunter Kramer versus Kramer days was that was it very different it was very different it was the Golden Gloves was a little afternoon event that was held at lunchtime and it was on closed-circuit television for the Los Angeles area Los Angeles County only I remember Jack Nicholson was there really drunk it was a great great you know just go forever but I was there after Kramer vs Kramer giving birth to my first child and in those days I didn't have you know they didn't lend you dresses so you had to buy something and I didn't have any money so I wore my wedding dress as you would perfectly nice white silk dress but the luncheon went on you know and I was I was breastfeeding and two o'clock came in a white dress they called my name I won and I walk odd you know it was so embarrassing but what's ordinary about you is that you it was so kind of you seemed so quick off the blocks if you don't I mean in that you know it was Julia Deerhunter and then Kramer vs Kramer an Oscar already yeah and see in my head I'm thinking like that's a new film well time for guess what his thing my mother always told me to throw these away and I'm so glad I didn't because look is my old cover of Playgirl and there you are Meryl Streep the freshest face of Hollywood this is genius Playgirl picks America's 10 sexiest men okay yeah Oh Jay Simpson I say that oh well yeah we have it now mother always told you not to throw those away no she said to throw them away throw them yeah and I said no one day don't come in useful and now look now the thing is I think this is comforting people young actors out there should take solace because although the success was very fast everything not all the additions went that really the beginning do you know the one I'm talking about with Dino De Laurentiis Oh auditioning yes yes yes well that was for King Kong no yes yes the girl she's very good yeah that was Dino De Laurentiis senior and his son had seen me in a play and so I went up to the top of the Gulf and Western building that's like the 33rd floor and he had this amazing office that looked all over Manhattan and he was back there and I walked in and and his son was sitting there very excited that he brought in this new actress and the father said to his son in Italian because I understand tiny said gay brother you know why do you bring me this ugly thing very sobering so I said to him me this Piazza Motoman you know but I understand what you're saying I'm sorry I'm not beautiful enough to be in Kings car but what was the thing you were up for when they wanted to do the really crate the drug me that was a nightmare but I've kind of horrible woman I've had many auditions that I've had to get myself out of because it was just bad bad bad when you're young actors they just make you do stuff that you there was one particularly my agent once put me up for something which which she was convinced was a there's gonna be something great for me Italian songs I had to play the guitar and all that kind of stuff I said no problem and of course the day came and I just haven't probably all that so I didn't have it and I stood in front of them and my heart was in my mouth and I just thought I've gotta get her and this so I started to cry and I said and they'll probably if they ever hear the stuff sank wow we really believed him he's an absolute bastard so to make myself crying I mean I'm really sorry I'm really sorry I've just had a phone call from uh me he's been knocked down I'm gonna oh do you want me play yes so I'm sorry about that so you should be you know what sure you are now Meryl Streep we can come to have you here without talking about your amazing process with the accents well you are amazing and but do you have like are you just fully confident have you ever got a script and gotta go whoa can't do this one oh yeah I mean I think that every time but I I don't I don't I'm not a natural at it actually I'm not like my friend Tracey Ullman she can sit for five seconds with somebody and then leaned over to me and do them you know she's amazing amazing I can't do that I sort of I have to work a little bit harder and I like it I like going deep into into that sort of thing because it conjures up a whole a whole world but yeah what's the hardest which one have you found the toughest thus far Scottish oh really yeah all right whatever you start to cry my friends Binaca do do me do me all right I can you see this place is pure watching me ball bags this place is pure ho t-mobile bags opening tonight also opening tonight is a movie it's sure to do well this award season it's called Foxcatcher and one of its stars is mr. Mark Ruffalo yes based on a true story it's an extraordinary story what can you tell us about it well mid 90s there was a Jean DuPont who was the heir of the DuPont fortune basically took in the American wrestling Olympic wrestling team onto his farm as their benefactor so he got these wonderfully talented people to to go and live there and and and basically have them call him coach to brothers and yeah and saw the toots oh I play one of two brothers the Schultz brothers Dave and Mark Schultz I play Dave Schultz and they were American wrestling heroes icons they were the best that America had produced up into that point the forces are amazing I mean you're so good in it but the fact that you have done a lot of wrestling did that come into play in you were wanting to do it you're being asked to do it that was the only reason they cast me I did I did wrestle in high school and and so I thought that that was going to help me give me a leg up until I had to wrestle against Channing Tatum whose arm is bigger than my torso but you got very strong yeah I put on 30 pounds Wow but now I smoke steve carell about it briefly and I think it's fair to say he said making this film was not a barrel of laughs it was quite hmm tough yeah it was we were shooting in Pittsburgh in the winter it was it was it was never any lovely place if you like steel mills that so it was it was it was cold and we had to wrestle all the time and the wrestling was really on I a was playing a 35 year old man who's at the peak of his athletic prowess and I am a 47 year old man who is at the bottom whatever's left of it and is it true the thing that you guys didn't really hang out you didn't socialize you didn't break chanting and I were together every moment but but steve carell was sort of off in his own thing and and and you'll see the way he looks in the movie is so repulsive that no one wanted to talk to him he would she was saying the same thing on the Devil Wears Prada it was real that don't they you know don't think we're horrible people you didn't speak oh well they all had they all had a fabulous time stanley tucci and Emily Blunt I think thought it wouldn't be helpful I'm sure she was thinking this way because when you and I like to have a good time I mean I really that's basically why minute you know is to have fun and but I couldn't do that and then sort of walk in and chill the blood so it it is a funny thing because James McAvoy when you were in the Last King of Scotland yeah a forest with a very East day where did that thing of being idiom mean all the time oh he did yeah man it was kind of weird I was lucky I was sort of a Loudon he was gorgeous listen he was never liked n character it was never committed you know crimes against humanity but I remember one particular day we were driving this car and I had a beautiful little clap doh Mercedes seventies Mercedes and the thing which had a hole in the bottom Flintstone style and and it was one of Edie's original cars as well anyway so I was driving him little did he know that I didn't have a driver's license that was tail fishing round corners and between six and he have to take this call and he stayed in character he was on the phone to his lawyer now this is yourself and Channing Tatum so it's extraordinary and if you didn't get that was Steve Carell talking to back there and Channing Tatum yeah yeah I wasn't in that clip because no obviously Steve Carrell percentage but you really did it I mean the hair the weights so good look right how long did you have to look like that for a long time months and months how did that go down at home not well turn off the light darling intruder tonight now the Hulk weirdly no percentage for the Hulk but in green suits yeah and new prosthetic so you just wear the green people ask me all the time like how long did you have to stay in the makeup chair for that did you did did you have to workout for that are you aware of all the concern online amongst the Mark Ruffalo fans about what the finished Hulk would look like I know all my fans by name you know their concerns you know their worries there was a lot of concern amongst the mark of an offense that the Hulk would not retain his beautifully pursuit chest they thought he might be hairless oh but happily the The Hulk has got some hair it's the first Hulk in the history of moviemaking all three movies yeah all two of them now we're where the Hulk has body hair it's a really it's a revolution it's really we're doing some groundbreaking work you're probably familiar that mark since you are a campaigner for the hairy chest your body could flow here with the there's a site called hairy chest I want to cry on there really is there really hit your producing team made me aware so you you are front and center on this I think you look really like my big garbage that's not me is that really not you that's Lenny Kravitz is it really no don't mess with my head the person who ever posted this but a little comment on the side mark ruffalo more like mark buffalo look at that Harry hi speaking of Buffalo I want to drive his body to the verge of extinction what was that person's name but there's other people on it there's other people on it there are of course of course a co-star of yours features on it here is its peers did you know men weren't allowed to be photographed in the 80s unless they exposed some chest hair while riding a yacht there are some surprising people on this website and now brace yourself Merrill because I know we warned you we're over that no I believe I've I recommend in old crush of yours appears on here look it's our very own Prince Charlie you really when you were younger when I was a kid I found out that we were born in the same year and so I figured it was pretty likely that we'd get married you told him that finally funny because we have to ease that you know he really is the daddy of all screen hairiness no Sean Connery wait I love this this is my favorite comedy ever Sean Connery if I were that lady I'd match my face into his chest so hard my nose of we must say james mcavoy james mcavoy back in the West End because huge success the Trafalgar studios with Macbeth thank you now you've reunited with the same team and you're back there with a play called the ruling class that it was on the 16th of January yes is it the ruling class the Peter O'Toole did yeah he did the movie version of it they made the play from 1968 and then they did the movie and I think in 1970 how do you know your God Oh simple when I pray to him I find I'm talking to myself I just got to say people had forgotten this play but they clearly have great great I saw it's an incredible piece but is it perhaps maybe it's about the aristocracy and in the 60s and in the UK and I thought you know did we care about that anymore I grew up in the classless society as tambon coined by John Major and then we had real Britannia and you know new labor and all that and I was like they we cared about class and I started reading it and it's just exactly the right time for this play in the and the same month the guy Carrie Smith from you kept said we should all go hunting peasants and the you know disgusting poofters and all that kind of stuff this play is exactly about the people who are in government the the that system of education creates and it's an incredible waste it sounds quite serious it's actually very funny and you're singing in it I'm singing from there yes singing and dancing I'm doing a bit of opera bit of vaudeville and a bit of dancing play the flute I play the flute in it yes no I've I've had to learn how to be good at playing there's one particular thing and I can do that bit nothing else okay and and this is weird Mark Ruffalo what are the chances of this coming into our lives again you have learned the unicycle I like to uni do you like to uni would you you need I'd love that here it is the ball Gruffalo not only was he wrestler this is this for the last having saw mark and one of his testicles I honestly which one really worries poor many we really worried for you because he got on that unicycle look at the size can you see Seebeck sternum it's a huge one I wanted to be a clown wow there's a help line available sure you feel foolish now don't you listen we've got some unicycles here we've got to be unicycle sin so you can do this hey define can we'll see okay he's in the visual pudding yes so if you come over to the UNICEF okay can you really do this down here yeah yeah over here sir but be careful of that thing don't hit your head okay call this ham no terrible um I think I can like sort of do it are you gonna start to cry and tell us of friends being sort of like I'm I kind of in the play right I just need to come on riding it I don't need to get on it on stage something serious would you help me get this is good oh the sword of the Lord is sheriff blood here we go Oh God give me strength man okay okay right give me some room go we've got another one you can you can both do it together here we go oh look at you hey smart okay don't crash into each other he's sure Merrill there is another one if Mehta was the right of Massey I've never walked out we'll get rid of them while the music because we can talk with them no we can talk no more so it is time for music performing the most played song of 2014 we would have even bigger things forever 2015 here with take me to church it is it's only meryl streep that we met the street hey sit down there down there sir now who's your face okay you know a lots of opportunities come with the sort of success you had last year and one of the opportunities you had was to perform at the Victoria Secrets Fashion Show yeah now focus on his music not even pretending I think to be fair and be fair why wouldn't you snowed yeah I've never I've never done a fashion show but in certainly in that fashion show as well I'm used to you know
