uh um an extraordinarily moving moment and you have to remember in this pandemic the people of britain are not lining streets this is happening only at windsor castle so so many of the british people watching just as we are here in america watching it play out on television this morning the deference and respect for prince philip we worked on that land rover right up until 2019 just a couple of years ago chose the color wanted to change from their typical belize green to the military green that he remembered from his time in the military behind that land rover this morning his children will be part of the procession prince charles of course who now takes on a much greater role princess hand the arrival of queen elizabeth in the state bentley wearing a mask i noticed through that window and traveling with lady and waiting lady susan hussey chosen to escort the queen [Music] to the chapel this morning all right [Music] and there you see prince charles and his siblings his sister princess anne prince andrew prince edward this is a half mile route lined with military personnel from all services and this is what prince philip wanted [Music] and you can see behind prince charles there prince william on the left of course [Music] and on the far right prince harry separated by their older cousin peter phillips but standing side by side as you can see right there that was likely [Music] something they were aware of things don't happen by accident here every step every position well planned the fact that they were walking side by side perhaps is a signal of unity they're there for their grandfather and i'm sure for many of you watching at home you'll remember one of the last moving processions when we saw princess william and harry and they were with their grandfather prince philip as they walk behind their own mother the late princess diana those princes have long talked of their love for the grandfather and it will likely mean a great deal to the people of britain and really around the world to see those two brothers there together to honor their grandfather [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] you know it is royal tradition that in processions like these they would wear uniform because of their service or honorary links with military commands but it was the queen herself who in recent days said all senior royals will wear civilian clothes to this funeral of course that meant less attention for prince harry who had been stripped of his military honors his his rank within the royal family given his service in afghanistan simply because he chose to step back from his royal duties but the queen's sensitive to that and the queen asking that everyone wear civilian clothes to the funeral to this service today and many of them likely with medals and certainly hairy to marking his service to his country something his grandfather was no doubt very proud of as well and prince philip and you'll see this throughout the service this morning wanted to make sure that his service to country and that all of the men and women who have served would be celebrated and honored today through his service [Music] [Music] [Music] there you see duchess kate [Music] of course prince philip there for her wedding to prince william and also there for the wedding there's duchess camilla all members of the royal family wearing masks this morning and there is strict protocol in the uk that you must keep a distance from people that you haven't been in a bubble with and so there have been questions about whether or not once we enter the chapel if the queen will be sitting alone which is very likely since her bubble is her staff and her team within the palace and there we see the queen [Music] looking back and it it sort of takes your breath away doesn't it debra it really does david and at the end this is a family this is a funeral and this is uh an elderly woman who has lost her husband her life mate and you really feel it when you watch this it is a family saying goodbye to a grandfather and a father prince charles leading the procession of course remembering his dear papa with very loving words for prince philip and [Music] prince charles heir to the throne but he you've been waiting for a long time with with great respect for his mother the queen and she shows no signs of slowing down holding her first sort of royal duties engagement after the death of prince philip already just within four days or so if i recall but prince charles will step up he'll take on a greater role and omit scoby abc news royal contributor with us too and we were seeing there the queen she enters the chapel and the family behind the coffin and and we can't say it enough that prince philip behind the scenes was the rock of this family he was the person that so many members of the royal family turn to if they wanted the truth flag we wanted to take in that moment but omid talk about the power of what we're seeing here this morning the royal tribute and military honors for a prince who was so proud of his service to his country yeah this this is a day that we see prince philip's life and legacy celebrated of course a man that wasn't born to this country but lived a life of service to this country at a very young age he turned his back on his military career to give his life to this country as the consorts to the queen also supporting her in the role that she had but also in a very difficult position where he had to carve out his own role his own legacy and we really saw that in the recent years uh his life really being remembered after his retirement in 2017 people really still look back on the work that he achieved across the commonwealth visiting over 229 countries really focusing on that role but also many young people across the country today are also remembering his life the impact he's had on that youth community through the duke of edinburgh awards has been something that has really struck a chord with many omitted thank you purple it would fight [Music] careful one huh [Music] god now the national minutes of silence across the uk to honor number one on number two catcher joey hello good what [Music] so purple one not and now the coffin carried up the rest of the western steps there of saint george's chapel met by the dean of windsor and the archbishop of canterbury there will not be eulogies this morning from the royal family during this service but we do remember the queen's famous words that prince philip has quite simply been my strength and stay all these years and i and his whole family and this and many other countries owe him a debt greater than we would ever claim or we shall ever know [Music] we had been told that members of the royal family you can see it right there putting on their masks as they enter the chapel just a reminder of the of what really the whole world has been through but certainly the uk and viewers here in america understand and in many ways it's a reminder of the of the funerals not only from covet but from any other reason to lose a loved one in this past year or more has been so difficult for families around the world because of the distance we've had to keep from these funerals and this on a much grander scale is emblematic of that they'll be sitting apart from one another in the chapel and we haven't seen the lines in the streets though we know millions across the uk are watching this with us this morning deborah david i'm struck by one thing too is that even though he was a private person a lot of people didn't know that prince philip was a man of great faith and uh here at this very chapel he has helped establish a retreat years ago for people of faith but he wanted a very simple ceremony which is what you're seeing here and it seems to reflect what he was all about keep it simple let's get on with it but certainly paying homage to a man who cared deeply about his country and also about his faith and he turned to faith in greater measure as he got older middle age and later as he questioned his role within the royal family and [Music] what he could do to make a difference that is on full display as you point out debra right here this morning [Music] yes foreign [Music] [Applause] [Music] god [Music] is [Music] is [Music] oh [Music] the choir beautiful especially when you know there are just four people performing in that choir because of coving [Music] foreign [Music] yes [Music] yes [Music] we are here today in saint george's chapel to commit into the hands of god the soul of his servant prince philip duke of edinburgh with grateful hearts we remember the many ways in which his long life has been a blessing to us we have been inspired by his unwavering loyalty to our queen by his service to the nation and the commonwealth by his courage fortitude and faith our lives have been enriched through the challenges that he has set us the encouragement that he has given us his kindness humor and humanity we fly out like birds by his mighty power the clouds are piled up and the hailstones broken small the crash of his thunder makes the earth writhe and when he appears an earthquake shakes the hills at his will the south wind blows the squall from the north and the hurricane he scatters the snowflakes like birds are lighting they settle like a swarm of locusts the eye is dazzled by their beautiful whiteness and as they fall the mind is entranced he spreads frost on the earth like salt and icicles form like pointed stakes a cold blast from the north and ice grows hard on the water settling on every pool as though the water we're putting on a breastplate he consumes the hills scorches the wilderness and withers the grass like fire cloudy weather quickly puts all to rights and due brings welcome relief after heat by the power of his thought he tamed the deep and planted it with islands those who sail the sea tell stories of its dangers which astonish all who hear them in it are strange and wonderful creatures all kinds of living things and huge sea monsters by his own action he achieves his end and by his word all things are held together foreign [Music] is [Music] is to the church the queen and the commonwealth and all people unity peace and concord and to us and all god's servants life everlasting and the blessing of god almighty the father the son and the holy spirit be with you all and remain with you always amen [Music] [Applause] is [Music] [Applause] [Music] of course the national anthem god saved the queen and perhaps the most powerful moment of the morning here in the anthem watching queen elizabeth and in these final moments they will lower the coffin [Music] and you might be wondering if this is the final resting place it's not [Music] and here's the queen as her children and grandchildren follow we should note that when the queen dies the duke will be moved actually to the tiny king george vi memorial chapel also there on the grounds where the queen's father and her mother queen elizabeth the queen mother and the cremains of her sister princess margaret are also interred he will then lie beside his wife again prince william such as kate and we saw during the service prince harry alone at the end there that was part of the protocol that we knew we would witness but it's still painful to watch a family mourn their grandfather their father their husband and a reminder of what quite frankly so many families have gone through during these pandemics this pandemic these times fitting farewell from a safe distance [Music] deborah roberts the queen met the young cadet when she was just a teenager 13 14 years old she told her father he's the only man i will ever love and her father signaled slow down slow down but they would then marry and you know we saw the sword on top of that coffin that was a gift from queen elizabeth's father with an inscription a message from him as prince philip married his daughter david you're reminded of what they meant to each other as we watched with all the photos of them together and people have been touched by it on social media talking about what it is to see all these pictures many we've never seen before of the two of them and seeing that image of her alone but someone said on social media the queen will not be alone the nation will be by her side and i think that is the overwhelming feeling that people are having today the whatever they think about the monarchy they are deeply devoted to this woman and her life of service and as james longman mentioned earlier in our coverage this has been an opportunity deborah for the uk to be reminded of all of the tests britain has faced and that the queen and prince philip have been there to help them usher them through it all and certainly the tests within the royal family that played out in front of the cameras in fact it was prince philip himself who wanted to be more accessible to the british people encourage the queen to be part of that documentary very early on in their marriage with their children i'm not sure the queen loved it so much but uh it did show them to be more ordinary than folks perhaps might have thought and it also probably led to more hunger you know that sort of insatiable curiosity about the royals that they've had to deal with for so many years as we watch and see the family as they leave and wait to see what they'll show us next maggie rooley is outside buckingham palace she's in london and i know maggie the big difference with this is that people haven't been able to line the streets to show their public respects for the prince but in your reporting in recent days you've often pointed out that people have come to the palace anyway in quiet ways and in their own way to say thank you yeah exactly david you know we've been seeing just a constant stream of people behind us even during that minute of silence just moments ago we saw a small group gathering to pay their respects and david you know i'll never forget the moment from last friday we were standing right here when that news of prince philip's passing was announced and we turned around and we saw that flag on the buckingham palace being lowered to half-mast and just the heaviness that was in the air the heaviness has not left buckingham palace since and the people that have all come to pay their respects to mourn i've spoken to so many of them and the thing that sticks with me is that so many of them tell me the same thing that to them prince philip was like the nation's grandfather this constant in their life and to know that he's no longer with us just leaves this void so yes david the group is very small behind me police are not letting people gather the memorials are small the tributes have been kept tiny but despite this size they're still so powerful because people are here honoring prince philip and in some ways it's fitting for a prince who was known to not like a fuss known for his quiet dignity in some ways it seems like this is kind of the perfect way to remember him today thank you the queen getting back into the state bentley which by the way we mentioned prince philip in the land rover that he helped design to carry him he and the queen also had a lot to do with this bentley and this was given to her for her jubilee they were involved in that too not necessarily in the design of the bentley it's hard to really mess with a bentley button with some of the modifications that she's driven off along with the lady in waiting so not entirely alone but deborah as you point out that that image of the funeral of the queen sitting by herself and that famous story you know it wasn't long after they were married she was certainly not queen yet but her father was sick and they traveled to kenya on their first commonwealth tour their first stop on the tour there we see prince william and prince harry together duchess kate people have said in the days leading up to this that they were hoping for moments like the one you just saw and that's the one thing i think that you're reminded of when you watch a funeral like this and that this is a family a family sons have said often deborah how much they love their grandfather and now they leave together a family that drew great strength from each other and he was that strength for all of them after their mother died it was prince philip who jumped in and said that he wanted to make sure the boys were taken care of he walked with them along the route he took them fishing and hunting to take their mind off their grief i mean at the end of the day he was a grandfather and he may have been a little gruff in his nature people may have made jokes about that but he was a caring grandfather and great-grandfather the ceo of his family we see prince charles there duchess camilla duchess of cornwall in front of them andrew of course with his two daughters fusioning in beatrice and we see there that's edward sons james he stands out because he's the youngest of the grandchildren just 13 years old as we look at that picture and as i noted a moment ago that that image of princess william and harry and duchess kate i have no doubt that that will become also one of the defining moments of the day and they're well aware that the world has dissected the tensions and the headlines as of late and they know their own truths and certainly they are aware of the power of an image of talking with one another and walking out together after remembering their grandfather and omen i would i would gather you've reported so much on william and harry and uh and harry has been so open about his own struggle with mental health after the loss of his mother princess diana prince william has talked about it too such as kate it was something they all did together for a time duchess megan included this we have to remember is a day when they're mourning the loss of someone they were very very close to their grandfather yeah despite the differences that we've heard about the family members and and alleged or reported tensions this has been the day where they are unified and their grief and their love for the life and legacy of prince philip those moments we see now with william and harry talking together this is the first time they've seen each other in over a year face to face and it'll no doubt be those first steps forward and really building the bridges to repairing relations and that's exactly what prince philip would have wanted today he would have wanted to have for everyone to put their differences aside focus on family and what matters and we're seeing that unfold in front in front of our very eyes thank you and victoria i began to tell the story a moment ago that first stop on their commonwealth tour as a young couple newly married uh queen elizabeth and prince philip she wasn't the queen yet she was the crown princess of course and she had traveled to kenya they went up into a treehouse where they were staying the night and it was overnight that she lost her father it's been written so often that she came down that tree a queen and it was actually prince philip at the time who broke the news and i can't help but to look that it's been such a long life and to see her alone in that chapel she is strong and certainly the british people know that the world knows that but what an extraordinary challenge this day and these days ahead will be for her not to have the person who's been there every step of the way you're absolutely right david i mean he has been by her side every step of the way and seeing her alone that image of her sitting on the edge of the pew in the chapel today i think will really be a defining image of this funeral because it was incredibly moving to see that completely by herself with a face mask on as well of course due to covered times and i think another really poignant image as you pointed out when we first saw it was of course the duke's navel cap on his um on top of the coffin there and i think that that is incredibly moving to see because that is symbolic of the career that he gave up in order to do his duty and support her and that will really be his legacy that he gave up as you point out to serve his queen even though he was unsure in the beginning how to necessarily fulfill that role and he would learn along the way and be honest about it humble and honest about having to seek out what that role would mean over the course of time and it certainly took on different definitions an outward facing role but also an inward one where he became sort of the rock for the family the queen certainly is as well but many able to turn to prince philip through the years his children grandchildren obviously stories of even princess diana for a time when she was struggling with prince charles that prince philip tried to help them tried to reach out to princess diana because he knew what it was like to join this family ultimately though it didn't work out and of course as we've mentioned here this morning the prince walking with his grandsons behind princess diana's coffin the queen has said before the funeral today and she wanted to make a point of this buckingham palace repeatedly said this that these were very much the personal wishes of the duke the queen said prince philip planned this funeral and i want to bring in robert again because robert we were struck here in the studio deborah and i were talking about this that the readings today in particular the first reading so much about the outdoors about nature about uh intersection of our lives with the wildlife around us the birds and the sea and it spoke so much about prince philip without actually talking about prince philip which i thought was sort of a metaphor for the way he carried himself not wanting to make it about himself but this service very much reflected him well it certainly did because it was deeply moving the entire service not only the queen i thought the image is the queen alone but uh as regards nature of course the duke edinburgh was the founder of the wildlife wildlife fund he you know it was a man of vision a man of um who actually got that whole movement going he inspired his son to become one of the great environmentalists i think and his grandson prince william too so he's a deep thinking man a very well-read man he he wrote many books about birds and nature um he was a great photographer a great artist too a man of a man who had really contributed an awful lot that a lot of people don't know about and then i for one was deeply moved by that ceremony i'm sure a lot of people will be thinking of their own loved ones who passed but this is a family in grief and at the end luckily we saw william and the harrier put penny squabbles aside and be united in grief and that was a hopeful image how significant do you think that'll be robert there in the uk well i'm sure that that image will be significant to the tabloid media that get a bit excited about all of these things but i think to be brutally honest um the image for me and i think the image for everybody in this country will be of her majesty queen elizabeth sitting alone with that mask on and contemplating the loss of her one true love but more importantly you know she is 95 very soon she's been on the throne longer than any other queen any other king um she must have been it must have been deep in thought and um i'm sure that the prince of wales will be the main supporter of her as the patriarch mayor of the family as we are now a monarchy in transition because he will take on if you like a quasi-king role now that philip is dead robert make the point that we were making earlier that there's no question the the singular image of the day was queen elizabeth sitting by herself in the chapel and the longest serving monarch in british history of course prince philip was the longest serving spouse to the monarchy this is a bit of a turning of the page a new chapter and and prince charles will certainly take on a much greater role as you just mentioned robert uh and then of course to see prince william and duchess kate there uh as well uh as they define sort of the next chapter the queen isn't going anywhere and she has proven to the british people into the world her staying power and her strength and that was on full display again today victoria i want to bring you back into the conversation because i know that this couple like any couple endeavor mentioned this earlier in our coverage um they they certainly had their their struggles as a married couple and they kept that uh for the most part very very private it's only in the stories that we've read in in books and in portrayals on television uh certainly people watching this morning many of whom have watched the crown and there have been questions about how much of that was actually a true reflection of the royal family but but prince philip famously said at one point we've got to make this monarchy thing work you know he always was aware of sort of the the very obvious distance between the royal family and the public and he wanted to find a way to make them more accessible more ordinary long before there was pressure to do that for the royal family he sensed what it is we watched them go through today i think that's very interesting yes and i think this will be a huge part of his legacy i think that he was a very outward looking man you know he wasn't really interested in the pomp and pageantry of monarchy he wasn't particularly excited about the fact that he was marrying into royalty i think he was more interested in looking at the world around him and thinking about how it worked and how he could help to make it better and i think that's what he really passed on to his children and his grandchildren he said he had so many interests and so many things and and he was definitely interested in progression and always looking at ways that that could be done and i think that that did set the tone really for what we see now with the royal family for them continuing to be outward looking and continuing to understand the importance of modernizing victoria thank you all morning long and i wanted to show the viewers watching us this morning some of the american connection with philip and elizabeth through the years and there you see them with the kennedys there the first president that prince philip would meet would be president truman that puts this in perspective the reagans the bushes there uh i believe that's camden yards there with president george h.w bush and first lady barbara bush of course the clintons and then the obamas uh prince philip there and queen elizabeth they they have partnered with american presidents and first ladies for so many years and that will be something we miss here james longman i know that you went out of your way to sort of report on that that american relationship and it's been a very close one for so many decades and prince philip will be missed here in the united states as well yeah absolutely i think you know there's a real love of monarchy around the world the united states is no exception i think our hearts really go out to the queen whether you're in the united states in the united kingdom anywhere on earth today that is who people are thinking of that moment in the church where we saw her in the pew with her mask on sitting alone when the national anthem was sung that was so extraordinary and to me it wasn't sad it was a moment we were watching the queen doing her duty which is exactly what philip would have wanted and that is why to people all over the world she's such a symbol today was also about two families saying goodbye i think yes the royal family but also the wider military family you know philip was representative of an entire generation a generation of war heroes people for whom duty and service and honor were the most important things and people who didn't talk about themselves they wanted to help other people and that is what i'm taking away today david i think and today was such a fitting tribute to prince philip james longman right there in windsor forest james excellent reporting really in the days leading up to this as we sort of uh narrated together a reliving of the history of prince philip and his impact not only on britain but the world his devotion to the queen and i want to bring back in deborah roberts who's with me here in the studio in new york and deborah you and i traveled to windsor we covered the last royal wedding obviously harry and meghan and then and covered the royals for so many years and one of the things that will also be missed about prince philip is um his down-to-earth nature and the queen counted on him i mean listen he certainly had pedigree in his roots and with his family but he was the only one sort of with a connection to the outside world and he was able to guide the queen through those moments she would ask him questions knowing that he would be truthful again they were equals behind the scenes and he'd also put people at ease too david he may have been a prince but he was sort of the king of the one-liners even recently when he stepped down from his duties he was hurt to save when somebody said i'm sorry to hear you stepping down and he without missing a beat said well because i can't stand up much longer you know he had a sense of humor and i think it was probably all about trying to puncture that mystique around the royals and make people feel a little bit at ease because he did have a humor and he looked at them as people and i think that at the end of the day people did sort of feel that when they were in his presence and it's always funny to read those little anecdotes about him sort of ahead of his time in in saying we're people too and trying to demonstrate that to uh really the world not only to britain but but to the world deborah thanks so much for joining us here today and and guiding us through this together and and i thank our entire team we're going to leave you here this morning with images of this day and as we watch here in america i know that all of you at home are likely thinking of queen elizabeth as well that that moment of seeing her in the chapel certainly near the end when prince philip's coffin was was lowered into the vault and again i pointed it out earlier but i think it bears repeating that eventually that is not his permanent resting place eventually he will be brought together and he will rest beside the queen once again just as he did in life for more than 73 years as her partner as i mentioned earlier happy to walk two paces behind the queen in public but there is a true partner and as an equal in private i'm david muir i want to thank all of our members of our team here this morning deborah here in new york james maggie of course robert victoria and omid as well and we thank you at home for starting your saturday morning with us and now the images of this day i hope you have a safe and um restful weekend wait lindsey are here and i'll see you on monday night good day we do go through life trying to make a legacy no i if i can life marginally more tolerable for people who come afterwards or even of the time i'd be delighted [Music] the fact of the matter is the marriage involves two partners [Music] when there's lots to do time seems to fly until that is you start looking back and you begin to realize how much has changed as much can be done by an individual but i'm sufficiently old-fashioned to believe that a great deal more can be achieved by a partnership in marriage it's been a challenge for us however i think that the main lesson that we've learned is that tolerance is the one essential ingredient of any happy marriage it may not be quite so important when things are going well but it is absolutely vital when things get difficult and you can take it from me that the queen has the quality of tolerance and abundance this has been a special report from abc news hannibal the barbarian took over two millennia ago when they invaded rome let's find some [Music] truffles
