let's reach together for some inspiration let's speak about some well-known writers who use fountain pens as part of their creative processes first let's talk about Neil gamon Neil giman I first became aware of him through his writing of some Doctor Who episodes I'm a huge Doctor Who fan and I've since read some of his books including his Norse mythology he's famous for writing American Gods and good Omens and many other really interesting stories that just take mythical elements and Magical elements and combine them in very creative and interesting ways always an interesting fun read with Neil gaimon so he is famous for using two fountain pens openly the first is a pilot custom 823 with a broad nib that he uses at his book signings so there's quite a few pictures of him out there signing books with this beautiful pen and of course the pilot custom 823 is one of the most Exquisite fountain pens that there are it has a beautiful vacuum filling mechanism that holds quite a bit of ink which is probably why he uses it for his book signings and although I have a medium nib and it is really really flowy and smooth and wonder ful I can only imagine that that broad nib is just more so which probably AIDS in his signing his name the many times over that he must do when he's doing a book signing so fantastic choice on the part of Mr gaon secondly he's known for using the Lami 2000 I'm not sure which nib he uses for this but it is a Lami 2000 and he's known for writing his books his stories lonand in almost a journal format and that's his first pass he loves to be creative just writing forming the words sometimes he crosses out he puts notes in the margins his manuscripts are actually really interesting to look at and he's making these with the Lami 2000 once again a really nice Workhorse of the pen not known for false starts so always there at already it also has a really quick cap action so I could see how you would want to use that as you get more and more creative and the word start flowing also it has a decent ink capacity so he's not going to be refilling too regularly and he'll be able to just write as long as he needs to as long as those ideas are coming so those are excellent choices for Mr G the next writer I'd like to discuss us is Haruki morakami this Japanese genres spanding surrealistic absurdist hard to describe just an absolutely interesting compelling amazing writer and really compelling personality as well my wife Ador morakami so there's quite a few of his books here and I've read a few myself he's known for killing commendator for Kafka on the Shore for 1q84 and just so many more books Norwegian Wood another one and um just a really interesting writer who actually mentions fountain pens as the means by which he began his writing career and this is what he says when I thought about sitting down at my desk at home and starting to write I realized that I didn't own even a decent fountain pen so I went to the kin Kunia store in Shinjuku and bought a sheath of manuscript paper and a $5 sailor pen so morami was inspired by sailor which is a fantastic choice I still see that sailor puts out quite a few beginner fountain pens I like sailor they're fantastic pens their quality just goes from their lowest tier pens all the way up to their very exclusive and incredible pens like the king of pant just absolutely brilliant brilliant company so morami made an excellent choice now let's talk about one of my favorite poets Dylan Thomas that Welsh poet who had such an amazing command over the sound of language the alliteration the asinet that just impending meter that just never quit just absolutely brilliant that sort of loed you in with almost a sing song approach and then devastated you with the levels of his meaning you probably know him from do not go gently into that good night rage rage against the dying of the light fantastic poem just absolutely adore Dyan Thomas and what did he use to write many of these poems well it's a fountain pen that he was often photographed with and that is the absolutely classic Parker 51 at the time Parker 51 had its quick drying ink it has a hooded nib it is a fantastic writer if a little difficult to find the edge I find personally I have a classic example of that pen right around the time that he would have had one so I have a bit of experience with it I do like it I find it to be very smooth than just a really nice expressive writer but I do roll it around in my hands a bit trying to find that edge I imagine that he was very familiar with this pen and didn't have that issue because he produced some absolute masterpieces with his Parker 51 let's speak now about the Indian born American writer salmon rashd he is known for the enchant of Florence the ground beneath her feet and of course the Satanic Verses Mr rushy has suffered for his art and has become a symbol of free speech and free expression all over the world so which fountain pen does he prefer it's the M Meister sto class which is an elegant pen very slim sophistic icated and very beautiful and how it writes he likes it because it is so smooth as he said to New York Magazine saying that many fountain pens feel scratchy to him so he gravitated toward the smoothest one he could find which is the epitome of Mont Blan smoothness is really their strong suit Mr rushy is a prolific writer just grounded in history yet with this incredible dose of magical realism I think it's really interesting that it's a ml Meister Stu that is his inspiration when he's writing by hand but it's a fantastic choice it's definitely an elegant and civilized pen for a very interesting writer and personality so I saved my namesake for last when it was time to create my num the internet I went went to my favorite writer and my favorite fictional character and put them together came up with Hemingway Jones and so we have Ernest Hemingway to consider here and there's a lot to say of course Ernest Hemingway really redefined literature and how sentences were constructed there was much more of a tendency to be very long- winded to fill in a bunch of adjectives and just make a sentence as verb CL as you possibly could Hemingway came along with a very sparse use of language that he learned as a cub reporter and a journalist he just learned how to pair down his language to its most Essential Elements and in fact he even experimented with taking the point of a sentence or a story out so that it was hinted at and had even more resonance so really fascinating Hemingway is always subjected to different revisions over the years people see him in many different ways he's a very complex individual he definitely had some interesting portrayals that will surprise a lot of people if you read his entire catalog it's very modern and always surprising and always easy to understand in that sparse but lyrical language so which fountain pens did Heming way use there's a lot of talk about this and I actually went through a lot of my pictures I tried to find some lists of his belongings and it's interesting you were more apt to find his desk with shotgun shells and different ephemera from his trips rather than his pens it seems like they weren't valued at the time his belongings were inventoried and no one really held on to them now his writing style was normally with with a pencil long hand which he then would retype and occasionally he typed so his pens were often used for other things for his correspondences which are fascinating and for his housekeeping for writing checks for writing notes to people and whatnot so he is always associated with Monte graa pens because in World War I he was stationed in basano De graa which is where these pens were produced and he probably owned some at one time but in all the photographs that I went through in trying to find him actually using a pen was him holding what appears to be a Parker 51 and curiously enough he endorsed Parker 51 in advertisements he was not above being paid to endorse a product the Parker 51 which is a fantastic choice and I'm assuming it was given to him and knowing how economical he could be I would imagine he probably used his free pens so Monte graa though still produces a line of Hemingway pens as have other manufacturers including M blong who has a famous one out there but the pen that seems most closely associated with him for use is the Parker 51 which as I said before is a brilliant noons choice for a writer who is brilliant and No Nonsense who uses sparse language and wants to get to the point quickly so another brilliant pen used by an amazing transforming artist so what do you think of my choices are there are any writers that I left out that you'd like to see in a part two leave them in the comment section I'd love to hear from you and if you've reached this point in the video and you haven't subscribed please do I'd love to have you on
