hi there my name Vince from my mate Vince calm and in this video today I'm going to talk about the evolution of the Xbox controller we're going to start in 2001 with a first ever Xbox controller and we're going to go right the way up so I've done in date order to the most recent at the end there and that's the Xbox one X at the ends with the controller that came with it now there's going to be lots of other third-party controllers but these are the main controllers that were shipped with each of the systems so I'm going to talk about each one in order go from the oldest to the newest so I'm just going to quickly scan up the table now and you can see that the controller's are next to the consoles that they came out with so here we have the original Xbox console and these two controllers here we've got the 360 console and these three controllers here we've got the Xbox one console these two Xbox 1s that one and Xbox one X and that one so let's get started so we're going to start with a controllers from the original Xbox console this one here was nicknamed fat C or more commonly known as the Juke because of the size of thing now this was shipped in all regions apart from Japan in 2001 and then in 2002 it got swapped over to the controller s which is the smaller version of this in Japan they went straight for the controller s because they didn't want to have a controller of this size now let me first will show you the features of this controller firstly it's a wide controller and the cord length is nice and long it's about nine and a half foot long and it's also got the breakaway dongle here so the idea of this is if you were to have your Xbox up on a shelf and somebody was to trip over this cord here then it would pull out from here rather than putting the Xbox console off the shelf and damaged in it so it features two motors for vibrations so we have rumble and it also has analog sticks so in this video you're gonna hear a lot about analog and digital let me just quickly explain what that is in case you don't know basically with a d-pad it would be digital meaning that if we were to go to the left its fiber off or on so the Iver doesn't go to the left or go select with analogs we have various degrees if something's analog it means that it doesn't just go all the way to the left it's proportional so it will go a little bit then a little bit more a little bit more and a little bit more and a little bit more so for example on this controller here it's got a digital d-pad and digital back and start buttons but yet the analog sticks are analog like we would come to expect nowadays but also on this one the buttons here are analog so the pressure-sensitive so the more you press them down the more they will do something so you can just have it rested like that and it will do one thing press it a bit more and it will do another thing and if you press it even more than that it will do another thing so for example on the analog stick here you're going to have loads of different stages as it moves across but on the buttons I believe it's three stages and I believe the white and black buttons are two stage now if any of this information is incorrect please add it to the comments down below I'm not going to be offended if I'm corrected on the controllers in this video now we have two accessory ports here so this would be if you wanted to put in your memory card here so for example if you want take your game saves to another Xbox if for example your friend's house so you can put your memory cards in here also you can put in something like an Xbox communicator so if you wanted to do voice chat then there was an Xbox communicator that you could plug into the top here and then it would allow voice chat when you're on Xbox Live and also we have some really nice triggers on this one here so we've got two triggers there's no bumper buttons because originally we had the white and black buttons that later got replaced with bumper buttons but I'll show you that later in the video a lot of people like the triggers on these because there's a lot of resistance to them so it's good for racing games because you can have quite a degree of control over it and also if you have a look at the analog sticks here you can see that this one is more concave it will fit your whole thumb in and this one here is more for fine movement now this was heavily criticized mostly because of the size of this and a lot of people said that these buttons here were inaccessible but some people likes it because they say the triggers are really good the analog sticks are really good most people agree that the d-pad wasn't great but one nice feature is can you see the way these buttons are laid out here it's different than it is nowadays so for example you can just rest your thumb here and you've got access to all the buttons just from your thumb without really moving it because you can hit the top one there and then if you want to hit the a you can do it with your knuckle so just hit it with your knuckle and then you can roll to hit the X and roll to hit the B so a lot of people like that because they can just rest there from there and then they can get all the movements on the buttons it's the Juke controller so if you have a closer look you can see the layout of all the buttons there this thing in the middle does absolutely nothing it was just to fill in empty space because the memory cards took up so much room that they just put this here doesn't light up doesn't do anything it's just in the middle they're taking up the majority of the roof right let's weigh it and do a quick size measurement right so without the cord it looks like it weighs around about 316 grams right let's just do a quick measurement now this is in millimeters so you can see the size of it all right let's move on to the next one so this is a second controller on the original Xbox console and this is called a controller s so this was the original controller in Japan but in the rest of the world this came out in 2002 for us and in Europe it came out in 2003 so buttons wise it's very similar to the Juke so we have our white and black buttons we have our back and start buttons again pressure sensitive so analog analog sticks and a lot of triggers digital d-pad these are digital here we've still got our two ports at the top just like the Juke we've still got a wired cable which is nine and a half foot long and it also still includes the breakaway dongle the main difference here is purely the size and also the layout of the buttons so the white and black buttons move from the top corner down to the bottom right here also if you have a look at the analog sticks they both look the same now so they're in the same location but remember this one here is shaped differently it's not concave on top also the D pads are massively different so this is a lot more what we're used to nowadays compared to this one here but the main thing with the difference is the weight and the size of it it's so much smaller also the action buttons here have gone to the diamond formation which we're used to now rather than this formation here so we can no longer just rest our hands on the buttons and get them all as easily as we could before and we've got our back and our start button here right this way this one right so without the lead we're looking at just under 250 grams so that is a good 60 something grams less than the Juke so it's much lighter and just to give you an idea of the measurements [Applause] right so they're the controllers for the Xbox console let's move on to the Xbox 360 next we're doing the 3 controllers from the Xbox 360 console so when the Xbox 360 came out you had a choice on which one you bought you could get a console with the wired controller or you can go for a more expensive one and have a console with the wireless controller so these both came out at the same time first of all I'm going to talk about the wired controller the xbox360 wired controller was released in 2005 and again it comes with a nine and a half foot cord like the previous generation and it also has the breakaway dongle the size of the controller is a little bit smaller than the controller s that it replaced but the buttons are in a different layout and it feels much more comfortable because it's more rounded it's not quite as angular as the previous generation now a backwards step was the fact that these action buttons now are no longer analog they're digital so they're just on and off they're not pressure-sensitive so as far as analog concerns we've got two analog sticks and we've also got two analog triggers here now you might have noticed that we no longer have the black and the white buttons these now have been replaced with bumper buttons up here so the right bumper would be the black button and the left bumper would be the white button so we have 11 digital buttons in total so we've got the two bumpers we've got our back our start and also our Guide button which is a new button I'll talk about that in a minute we've got our action buttons here and also we now have click in right click and left click on the analog stick so that's two more buttons we have there our d-pad is digital to the guide button here is labeled with the Xbox logo and this is used to turn the Xbox on or the controller on also around the edge here we have lights to indicate which player we are and if you look closely you can see one two three and four so that will indicate what player you are so if for example this third quarter was lit up from here to here then that would mean your player three you can also tap this in the middle of the game to access the Xbox Guide also if you have a look at the bottom here we have a 2.5 millimeter jack and that will allow you to plug in your headset so you can do your online chat and it's handy that it comes out at the bottom rather than the top because on the previous model it used to come out at the top here so there's less chance of getting it snagged when it comes out at the bottom also if you look next to the jack we have two more little sockets there that's to allow Xbox connectors for example the chap had wait off the controller without the lead is 222 grams here is the approximate size of it wireless version is a acted the same as far as the layouts concerned it was also released in 2005 the main difference is we're no longer tethered to the console via a cable so we have the freedom to move around the place so this was the first wireless controller with the Xbox systems downside is we now have a big battery pack sticking out of that so if you compare the two you can see that it's a lot of clear out the back because of the battery pack so a lot of people prefer the wide one because there's more room for your fingers on this one it's great that you have it Wireless so you've got the freedom of it but unfortunately this can get in the way of your fingers when you're playing now the battery pack it just takes two AAA batteries obviously you can put in rechargeable ones or you can get a plug-and-play kit which you charge up via here into the Xbox 360 console itself so on this the range is really good it's really reliable for most people you're not going to notice any difference in like a professional gamer would say that the wired connection is going to be better than the wireless but for the majority of people you're not going to notice any difference weight off the controller included in the batteries is 267 grams if you look closely at the top here we have a little sync button so that is to pair the controller with the Xbox 360 console that we're using and it doesn't use bluetooth it uses a 2.4 gigahertz signal so let's now move on to the next version of this controller right the next wireless xbox360 controller we have is this one here and this was released in November 2010 in the US and February 2011 in Europe and basically it's very very similar to the old one but we have a transform in d-pad so I'm going to show you that in a minute other very small changes are if you have a look very closely at the analog sticks can you see that there's a little Ridge around there and it's a different texture it goes from smooth to slightly rough while on the older model here is hard to see because it's worn away but if you have a look there's little dots there and there's no Ridge also if we have a look at the buttons here you can see now on this particular model they've gone away from their vibrant colors and it's just graze on gray so it depends now if a young child was playing this they're gonna find it harder to recognize than the brightly colored buttons on here but the main feature of this was that this had some criticism for the d-pad and on this one here it's a changeable d-pad so at the moment we've got the the plus shaped d-pad and now if we just gently turn it round like so can you see it turns into a disc shaped so these bits at the edge here just come up to meet the plus so now it's turned into a disc shaped v pad and then to turn it back again we just use a bit of force and turn it back so you can see it there but apart from that very very similar we've still got the battery pack sticking out the back weight of the controller including the batteries is 284 grams now we're going to do these two controllers from the first Xbox one console the Xbox one controller was released in 2013 and Microsoft spent over a hundred million dollars developing this so they wanted to make sure they got it right now the layout of the buttons is almost identical to the previous Xbox 360 apart from we no longer have the back and the start buttons we now have the view and the menu buttons the feel of it is similar but it's more angular down here so this had a more rounded feel to it while now it's got a more angled feel but if you have a look now we no longer have the battery pack sticking out so obviously this is still wireless it's never going to go back to the cable again but the batteries are now built into the body of the controller themselves so it doesn't stick out as much as the previous generation also if you wanted to connect it up to make it into a wide controller then you can now do that with this because it just has a micro USB port on the top here and what you can just do is you can just plug in a micro USB cable so you have the benefit of the wireless for those that want it and for the professional gamers that want zero or near enough zero lag then you can have it as a wired controller just like before you can also get battery packs so you don't have to keep putting your batteries in and then you can plug this in use your micro USB cable and you can charge it from your Xbox while playing it and it still uses a 2.4 gigahertz frequency to communicate with the Xbox one console but it's a redesign one that's supposed to work faster than the previous Xbox 360 and also the audio supposed to be clearer on it so with this one this is an expansion port down the bottom here and on this particular model of controller you have the user dedicated Xbox one chat headset so this is the one that came bundled with it and you just plug it into there like so and this is just a mono one but you can obviously get a better quality one but there's no 3.5 millimeter or two point five millimeter port on this you have to use their own connectors here but it's supposed to allow a clearer communication than the previous generation buttons are the same as before with here and analog triggers and then the rest of them are digital also we have to click in on the analog sticks so we have the Xbox Guide button here where you can press down to either turn the Xbox on or off with turn the controller on an offer to access to the menu etc but on this one it just lights up there is no lights around it so it's a bit of a backwards step because on the Xbox 360 each quarter would light up depending on what player you were and on for example a PlayStation 4 it will light up blue or red or green depending on what pay you are on this one it doesn't it just lights up white controller also contains light emitters up here so it can communicate with the Kinect sensor so it knows where you are and it also knows when it's being held on earth so when it's not being held for example when you're watching a movie and the controller is on but it's to the side then it will go into a low-power state so it will save your batteries so they'll last longer and just like the Xbox 360 controller before it it does support Rumble so they've got motors built in down here so you get their Rumble feedback as well as that on this one on the triggers there's a little motor on each of the triggers to give you haptic feedback so for example when you're accelerating in a racing game or when you're shooting a gun you can actually feel these give slight little vibrations which weren't on the previous model so basically these are called impulse triggers now the sticks on this a slightly redesigned as well so they're smaller than the previous generation because if you have a look here you can see that they're actually quite a bit smaller and they are 25% easier to move so there's less resistance on them the design of them is different as well and if you have a look at the bumpers and the triggers these have been completely redesigned as well so while before the triggers were quite small if you have over here the triggers are now really big yeah and the bumpers take up this whole area here as well so a lot of this is personal preference a lot of people would prefer the 360 feel but sir you know they've done their research into it and this is what they believe the market wanted so overall a very nice controller and a lot of people are very happy with it wait if the controller code in the batteries is 282 grams here was a proximate size of it now after this controller there is one controller that I haven't got it basically looks just like this one apart from you have a 3.5 millimeter hole here a 3.5 millimeter jack just like this one here so imagine this in black and that's that one there also they redesigned the bumpers because a lot of people said that these bumpers were tyring when you had to keep holding them down so they've made them with less resistance the only way I can explain it is if you have a look here it clicks fine when I do it there but if I was to try and click here it doesn't really click because I have to make sure I lean this way to make it click when I go in here I have to use an awful lot of force and sometimes it doesn't click at all because it's hinged here well with the redesigned one it clicks much easier even at the very top so have a listen you can see there it's click in there so it doesn't matter where I tap it it's clicking yeah but apart from that it is identical to this controller the Xbox elite controller this was released in October 2015 and it is a beautiful controller but you don't need it the Xbox controllers work just fine on all the systems but these have to be made relatively cheaply they have to be made to a certain cost to entice you to buy the console because if the consoles too expensive then people are going to go over to Playstation or Nintendo now if they were to bundle an elite controller with the console as standard then the price of that console is going to go up by about 100 pound which is going to put a lot of people off but if you've got the money this is a beautiful controller because they've made it not based so much on cost now the main thing about this controller the buttons all are the same apart from you have extra ones at the back I'll talk about in a minute but the analog sticks the triggers everything's in the same layout the thing about the elite controller is the way it is built the way it feels and the customization for example if you don't want to use the d-pad disk you can then use the plus and it's all magnetic it all goes together so nice if you listen to that it pulls it in because it's magnetic again with the analog sticks you've got choices if you don't like the design of that one you can change it to that one if you don't like the design of that one and you want a longer stick you can change it to that one yeah it's all about customizations if you look at the back here if you're doing a racing game then you might want to have a long throw on the triggers if you're doing a shooting game then you can change the triggers so you've got a shorter throw before it registers the hip so for example that's short let me change this to long and that's long you can see the difference there yeah again here we've got four extra buttons here and you can put these paddles on the back here and then you can map some of the face buttons onto the back here so you can't do combo for example I can't map three buttons onto one of these all this is is an alternative to the face buttons but the reason they've done this is so you don't have to take your thumbs off the analog sticks or you fingers off the triggers and you can still do an extra move so for example you can crouch or jump using these ones here without having to take your thumb off here to go onto here you've also got two profile motives can have one profile for one player another profile for another player and overall the feel of it is just really well made so you've got nice rubber textured grips here the overall feelin has a rubberized feel to it and you would be less likely to sweat on this compared to the standard Xbox controller which is just plastic and it's not just a physical customization of the analog sticks and the paddles and stuff you can also do it via software as well so I can change the sensitivity of the analog sticks if I go into the Xbox app I can even change the brightness of the lights here on the Xbox app although it is expensive it is a great controller and you find that a lot of people that buy these do actually think it's worth the money or I got this one secondhand for ninety pounds weight of the controller including the batteries is 348 grams now we're going to do the controller from the Xbox 1s console here we have the Xbox 1s controller this was released in 2016 along with the Xbox 1s now the main difference between this one and this one here is the fact that this one allows bluetooth so it will still connect to your Xbox console via a 2.4 gigahertz frequency that the old controllers did but you can now connect this up to your PC or laptop when you're doing your Windows 10 game in directly without using that Wireless Windows 10 adapter that you used to have to get before now as well as the Bluetooth we also have a textured grip on here so it's smooth here but textured here so it feels slightly nicer in the hand and slightly less sweaty than the old controllers apart from that we also have a 3.5 millimeter jack so this is actually very similar to the one that came after this you know the one I mentioned before with the 3.5 millimeter jack and the revised bumper buttons so this still has the 3.5 millimeter jack and the revised bumper buttons so now we can plug any pretty much any headset into this now and it's going to work obviously there's two different types of connectors so not all headsets work but you don't have to just rely on the Xbox headsets anymore they're a very good controller but buttons wise it's all exactly the same as this one features us all the same apart from headphone jack Bluetooth textured grip and bumper buttons weight of the controller including the batteries is 284 grams now we're going to do the controller from the Xbox 1x console and now finally we have the Xbox one X controller which is exactly the same as the Xbox one s controller apart from its black that's the only difference now if you're wondering how you're going to tell the difference between this and the first Xbox one controller then if you have a look here around the Xbox button can you see this is shiny and it's a different texture to this one here while this one is the same texture and it's all a one piece molding that's how you tell the difference between them but apart from that looking at them there you wouldn't actually be able to tell the difference just by looking at them because they both look so similar I said that's the difference there but apart from that there's no need to change it because this one works so well people are so happy with this and it's got bluetooth that there's no need to fix what isn't broken so that's why they've gone with this one for the Xbox one X console that is the video I appreciate it was a long one but there was a lot of controllers to get through so I hope you enjoyed it please give it a thumbs up if you liked it and please subscribe for more how-to videos take care bye now
