Illuminating [Music] television niod [Music] niod in the beginning there was pin wheel pin wheel was the first show on the channel in 1977 the creator of the channel Dr Vivian Herer who was responsible for PBS and the electric company wanted to experiment with educational programming for kids and Warner Corp gave the channel C3 or QB a launch to see an experimental test on how kids reacted to the show at the time it was seen as a lost Leader by Warner as having commercial free shows didn't make it a competitor to then HBO in 1979 Nickelodeon would Rebrand as the first ever children's net Network fun fact Vivian was dissatisfied with the name I wasn't thrilled with Nickelodeon it was Whimsical sounding though it had a fun ill it the shows on the rebranded channel aside from pin wheel was America Goes Bananas nickel flick and by the way all made and produced in Columbus Ohio by QB Joseph lzy created the first Nickelodeon logo in 1978 and was akin to how cartoons were seen before as Nickelodeons a machine that only cost 5 cents to watch cartoons on Warner Corp then expands the channel to other networks in the country MTV and Nick were separate at the time however sharing the same satellite in hagag New York short shows called interess were played by Jonathan Schwarz Nickelodeon would play for 15 hours each day before being replaced by the star Channel now known as the movie channel when the day was done on September 14th 1979 American Express bought 50% of Nickelodeon stock from war Corp for $175 million and would launch its own Network satellite providing by the new merger onck news nick nick nick nick nick nick nick Nickelodeon the 80s was a trying time for Nickelodeon as the channel was seeing tough times this time was also seen as the green vegetable era by then former president Sai Schneider which meant any show that was parent approve was broadcasted however kids really didn't want to watch shows like Dusty's Treehouse first row featured is what will they think of next and special delivery during 1981 Bob Kling created the new logo for Nick as well as 13-hour days as an extension to the network additional shows added to the roster were double dare the third eye Mr Wizards World standby lights camera in action Warner AMX then partnered Nickelodeon and MTV together as assets were Beginning to Look Grim in 1984 $10 million in Revenue were completely lost viewership was tanking and finished dead last by then Bob Pitman former president of MTV revamps Nickelodeon with Fred cybert and Alan Goodman on the logo and giving Nick its own jingle created by the J 5 responsible for this song my true story in 1961 by October 1st 1984 the revamp was a success and became the most dominant kids network for 26 years which would then Garner the intention of both Turner with Cartoon Network and Disney with the Disney Channel July 1st 1985 launches Nick at night with the Donna Reed Show that was pitched by Geraldine laborn who also hated the series for the late night block that ran from 8:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m. to play oldies but goodies at the same time American Express in Warner Corp drops Nickelodeon while MTV picks up Nick then launches VH1 for $685 million one of bros decides that kids television was not lucrative until Kids WB in 1995 in 1988 the Kids Choice Awards and Nick Jr launched on Nickelodeon while Pizza Hut partnered with the network in 1990 to make the publication Nickelodeon magazine while the brand grows popular Universal Studios in Orlando Florida makes Nickelodeon a tourist attraction and semi- recording studio with Nickelodeon Studios while Nickelodeon studios in Burbank California was starting to grow with original [Applause] content [Music] Nickelodeon was a dominant source for children's programming however the problem was the network relied on Canadian television shows August 11th 1991 was when Nick Tunes debut but it gets a bit deeper than that Geraldine leborn during the 70s made the first actual Nick tune called video Dream Theater however ran into financial trouble that left the show unaired later on during the bad years picked up Ralph brass with tatter town by 1989 Geral Dean would gathered a team at her house to redefine the purpose of cartoons and she pointed out that the main goal of cartoons was to sell toys and merchandise everybody else was doing toy driven stuff and it was garbage it's hard to create a character out of a toy for a lot of reasons you have a limited time to produce because you have to get the thing out when the product hits the market how about instead we do this radical thing of looking around the country for animators who have great characters living inside them Gerald Dean then in the early '90s would look for artists in LA in charge of scouting was Vanessa kof who did Nick Thanksgiving Fest in 1988 in 1991 the goal was to put the artist and characters first and then the money would follow the pitch concept and story as well as a reversal from Disney cartoons was what was needed with a $100,000 budget Nick secured two out ofh housee Animation Studios jumbo pictures and clasy super Incorporated Doug and Rugrats were the first two animated Nick Tunes following Ren and Stimpy which came from a variety show called your gang by John caly with the success of Rugrats and Doug renan Stimpy Creator John kuraly was fired by Vanessa for breach of contract delayed episodes and CW humor by him but that situation doesn't exist anymore in America it's no longer a free country it's communist or something and you can only make cartoons that are politically correct just like everything else you can only make cars that are politically correct and you can only make movies that are politically correct the internet eliminates the need for distribution which is one of the world's great evils the rights however were bought and given over to Bob Camp to continue the show in 1992 Nickelodeon in-house Studio games animation created Rocko's moderan Life which was green lit and becoming popular because of this initial success Sony wner partners with Nickelodeon to release VHS tapes of episodes before being sourced by the parent company Paramount Home Entertainment by 1995 Viacom issues a budget free which cancels Ren and Stimpy then Doug but sells jumbo pictures to Disney to revive the Disney show on one Saturday morning in 1996 the rights are still owned by Nick however don't know how that's possible Kabam in 1996 became an underrated animation show that took random Styles in animation and showed them in different shorts with snis and fondue life with lupy Prometheus and Bob and birthing the Nickelodeon series Action League now and Angela Anaconda Hey Arnold also debuted at the same time created by Craig Bart L based off to the character made from clation on peewee's Playhouse in 1997 dick spent $350 million in animation investment and Pilots SpongeBob SquarePants and cat dog were in production SpongeBob by Steven helenberg was almost abandoned as Nick Wanted SpongeBob to be in school rather than an adult working a job the pilot sponge boy aoy was a hit but ran into copyright issues as sponge boy was already trademarked Steven then meets with voice actor Tom Kenny who voices different characters on different projects Tom pitches the idea of SpongeBob's last name with him saying quote look at the sponge with SquarePants thinking he can get a job at a fast food place by 1998 oh yeah Cartoons by Fred cyber became a test subject for cartoon pitches akin to what a cartoon in 1997 which would birth a few cartoon shows such as chalk Zone The Fairly OD parents in My Life as a Teenage Robot by then The Rugrats Movie would then make the first Nickelodeon animated movie to compete with Disney and beat Disney's box office by $174 Million by then a second movie as well as two other cartoon pitches were becoming movies in production presents Jerk Chicken and Fish Out of Water that's me I'm the star he's a sidekick you got a Snick to snack Snick snacks short and sweet coming at you snake was a test subject on Saturday nights because major networks didn't care to cater to young people on Saturday nights Nick decided to pick up the idea and prove that young people were looking to watch shows on Saturday nights by the time of the launch Snick would go up to a million views in the first night according to neelen beating ABC Fox and NBC decimal rating numbers the show Ren in Stimpy Are You Afraid of the Dark roundhouse and Clarissa Explains It All were the top of shows on Snick Kabam was the show that was made for Snick an unconventional animation show that made it on the Nick Dooms roster by then new shows such as the adventures of Pete and Pete all that and The Secret World of Alex Mack were replaced after roundhouse and Clarissa ended Seasons the black would run for 15 years and was a time where the 8 to 10: p.m. slot would be filled with pre-teen to teenager demographics keep a bookmark on this one Nickelodeon would get a bit more corporate and saturated with brand and advertisements than ever before but still held true to the original philosophy of creating shows however with the successes of SpongeBob and The Fairly Odd Parents clasy super was creating the Wild Thornberries As Told by Ginger and Rocket Power Angry Beavers joined the roster in 1997 Nickelodeon would then make a few more moves regarding expansions in 1999 with the success of Nick Jr would then partner with the Sesame Workshop to create the thinking Channel then renamed n o I am nin Nagin would then air Sesame Street and Nick Junior shows while becoming commercial free for kids in preschool to Elementary ages with Cartoon Network having success and competing with Nick it launched cartoon cartoon Fridays taking over the Friday night slot Nick responded with Friday night Nick Tunes in 2001 to air new episodes of Nick Tunes because of EI during the Saturday morning craze by major networks nicholo was untouched due to the fact that it was its own network therefore wasn't a part of the controversy that they weren't educational and dominated Saturday nights albeit in 2002 Nickelodeon would get greedy and air Nick on CBS to put a hat in the race for Saturday morning cartoons however after the successes of Nick Movies such as Harriet the Spy and The Rugrats Movie Nickelodeon would be doing business with THQ to make video games and its own off character video game tacking the power of ju guu SpongeBob SquarePants would debut after the 99 Kids Choice Awards and prove that adults were half the viewership of the show as well as a money maker regarding its own movie and toy branding slime time live in the early 2000s would make the scene as it was filmed on set at Nickelodeon Studios in Orlando after every show during the noon day it would be an interactive game where kids would call in and play games with real people or celebrities people would then get pied or slimed as it was a running gag or if they won the game fun fact this this show holds the Guinness Book of World Records for most people pied and slimed in a show airing Nickelodeon however needed a new hit show second to SpongeBob then looked to Jimmy Neutron which was a struggling pilot as Runway rocket boy and Johnny quazar Steve oerk was inspired to pick up John a Davis's pilots and merges it with his own production company and creates it with CGI Lighthouse 3D and project Messiah by then Nickelodeon would tested with a budget of $30 million and make a movie on the boy Genius by the time it was released the movie reached $130 million in box office revenue despite losing D Shrek in the box office Nickelodean would then see Jimmy Neutron as not only its next Cash Cow but giving it a show in its own spin-off called The Adventures of Jimmy Neutron boy Genius Snick with new shows like the brothers Garcia and cousin sker would also join the roster in the mid 2000s with the success of the filad parents Butch Hartman would create his own studio billionfold and create d Phantom the second successful Nick tune federator and Butch would have a problem with rights to the fair OD parents brand but still create episodes on Nick's contract upick live which came from Nick in the afternoon in 1994 with stick stickly would have segments where kids can not only pick the show but be interactive with the characters in the mid 2000s Nick Tunes would later on have a problem many seasons were ending out of house Studios would lose contracts and Nickelodeon would expand its own Nick tunes Channel by 2002 Nagin would expanded sister channel to cater to teens called the N Nagin XX decide that to 6:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m. slots were important for teens to watch the shows they wanted to watch Canadian drama Degrassi was gaining traction and opened up not only channel view traffic but actual real discussions on what's Happening regarding actual teen issues this would also put certain liveaction shows from Nick on the Block after cancellations in 2004 Nick would separate from Nick at night due to neelson getting complaints from channels that Nick was manipulating views and then a law being passed that networks must have 51% or more of a day part to qualify for ratings in 2005 Nickelodeon would span into anime with avatar The Last Airbender which at the time was very revolutionary as it wasn't imported from Japan and was Nickelodeon's original work during 2006 Nick on CBS would discontinue spider and fly spider and fly spider and fly an enre day devoted completely to play Inon of the Worldwide Day of Play Nickelodeon is currently off the from 12 p.m. to 3 p.m. Nickelodeon would lose its luster as Snick would be cancelled in 2005 upic Live would end Nickelodeon Studios in Orlando Florida would close down due to financial hardships moving from Florida to California games animation would shut down KY suo dropped andess presence would switch to gain a more corporate Edge that and SpongeBob still alive Nickelodeon would also expand to hotels and food brandings to stay afloat while SpongeBob after its first movie would see a change in viewership MTV and Sony would also partner with Nickelodeon on creating music and albums with a child actors getting into music The Naked Brothers Band would be a music TV series with two real young musicians that would make numbers from 2007 to 2009 Nickelodeon would also keep Steven Hill ber and Butch Hartman until Steve died and Butch's contract was up with billionfold Inc frederator Inc would create a new experimental show to create new shows from the frederator studio called random cartoons two shows were piloted Fanboy and Chum Chum which was just called Fanboy and Adventure Time guess which one Nick [Music] chose Fanboy and Chum Chum were produced into a series because Nickelodeon thought that Adventure Time while a standalone series Eng gained its own hype could not sell toys therefore scrapping it while its competitor Cartoon Network would pick up and revive its cartoon Renaissance by then the mighty be by Amy polar made the scene while Nickelodeon would partner with DreamWork Studios to make TV spin-offs of Madagascar monsters versus aliens and Kung Fu Panda because Jimmy Neutron ended o Productions also known as omation would survive while DNA Productions would go into dormy however would pitch a spin-off on the barnyard movie would back at the Barnard also with Sheen Estes with Planet Sheen while not like by many audiences gained a call following Nick would also lose live action shows Drake and Josh The Amanda Show I Carly Victorious and Sam and Cat Henry Danger was the last installment of a liveaction sitcom coming out of Schneider's Bakery after certain allegations came out on him Nickelodeon's low View ship and expansion of channels would also see a heavy decline Nick wouldn't have a hit outside of SpongeBob and Avatar Legend ofur which also saw problems with cost switching Animation Studios to save money you would think it would get bad oh it gets a whole lot worse uh fellas yeah I don't think we're in the '90s anymore Nickelodeon would see that a lot of its old fans grew up from the 80s and '90s while many shows ended Nick contracts social media as well as brand merchandising sales and online signatures bought over to Nick made the network go into the reboot Lane with Hey Arnold the jungle movie and Rocco's Modern Life static cling Hey Arnold from the last season of the Jungle Burke continues the story of Arnold shortman in his friends going to the Lost jungle City to Find Arnold's parents while Rocco's Modern Life static cling follows Roco and Company trying to get his favorite TV show back on the air after being trapped in a rocket ship for almost a decade after after the reboots Nickelodeon decided to make t Nick's own channel and added the Splat a black dedicated to airing reruns of '90s favorites but it wouldn't stop there after the launch of Paramount plus I Carly Rugrats and fair parents received reboots as well the loudhouse by Chris Savino who is also responsible for Angry Beavers Cow and Chicken I Am Weasel and kick Bowski had a high turn of viewers returned to Nick considering SpongeBob spin-offs were turning audiences away from Nickelodeon while that was going on Chris Savino was then fired from Nick and suspended from aoi animation Guild 829 for me2 allegations Nickelodeon would then find a new artistic director while also creating the new spin-off the Kasa Grandes Nickelodeon was a revolutionary Network for the last 26 years mainly due to the fact that the former presidents would take into an account niches and putting the cartoon characters first the animators and creators were important to not only making money and selling toys Paving the way for not only competition ition but to set a course for animation for generations and an erir of kids that would then share the cartoons with their kids Nick was interactive wacky but also engage real life conversation with the content engaging kids to understand the world around them and that they were not alone regarding certain social issues Nickelodeon with his sister channels proved that kids and teens were looking to be catered to and with the limited networks not seeing how lucrative ad Revenue was with cartoons Nickelodeon earned its title as the first kid Network Nickelodeon would then Inspire Cartoon Network to revolutionize blocks and become competition where Nick lost its way was when presents only saw monetization of already popular titles without understanding why they became popular in the first place the problem is Nickelodeon lost their way regarding seeing way too much success with certain shows and only carrying one show as the cash cow while in return rejecting its core philosophy and only being about corporate interest can you say Nickelodeon being the diamond in the rough only made it so that it would see the exact same fate of what happens when you taste too much success maybe however in its Heyday proof to the world that you can make an Empire by trial and error and that's what Nickelodeon was the trial and error take a risk of a cartoon company not just cartoons we're ni not just cartoons we're ni not just cartoons we not just cartoons
