for the past 30 years or so Swedish forestry has placed equal weight on environmental and production goals this is regulated by the forestry act which specifies that these goals are equally important there are various ways to fail and manage forests but what determines which forestry method to use in this film we will learn more about three methods clear cutting with General environmental considerations shelter wood cutting with General environmental considerations and selective cutting clear cutting has been the dominant forestry method in Sweden since the 1950s restaurant clear cutting is the dominant forestry method in Sweden it's a cyclical process with various phases it starts with regeneration felling followed by planting and seeding growth clearing and thinning and finally the trees are failed and the circle is closed and then starts again the process starts with the older trees being failed to make room for the younger trees this is called regeneration felling a number of trees are left to preserve and develop biodiversity soil scarification is done after one to three years to create good growing points for seedlings that will be planted or that have been naturally seeded from the remaining trees this is followed by clearing when the trees are at least one meter tall and thinning of around one-third of the trees in several stages depending on where the trees are growing and how the forest looks foreign under the forest act the trees need to reach a minimum age before regeneration felling is done but Forest landowners normally allow some more time for the trees to grow then it all starts again we will now be meeting Krista Carlson an expert in selective cutting and shelter wood cutting the other two forestry methods we're examining let's start with shelter wood cutting your health is shelter wood cutting is often used for pain and sometimes for spruce this method also starts with regeneration felling to make space for the younger trees it's often said that the forest has two layers order trees are left in place with large gaps between them to allow younger trees to grow the older trees protect the plants under their shelter the Treetops which creates a microclimate that benefits the growing plants Crystal has focused on an in-depth study of stands of seed trees and the process of natural Pine regeneration foreign [Music] foreign foreign selective cutting is another continuous cover forestry method so we'll show us how this works is foreign a selection Forest has trees of many different sizes and age classes and it's often said that the forest has multiple layers in selective cutting the largest trees are failed and the younger trees are left in place and allowed to grow until it's time for the next filling cycle it's important that there are always small trees growing because growth will slow down if there's too much space between the trees selective cutting should be done every 10 to 15 years if it's done too infrequently there's a risk that the forest will end up having one or two layers due to weak growth a selection Forest has spruce trees mainly because a multi-layered forest doesn't let in as much light for the new plants and Spruce is one of the few types of trees that can grow without large amounts of light now that we've learned more about different forestry methods it's not difficult to understand that one single method is not appropriate for all Forest types or for the different goals Forest landowners have for their forests in cases where it's preferable to preserve the forest's appearance and protect species that cannot tolerate major consecutive cutting operations selective cutting or shelter wood cutting may be most appropriate clear cutting has higher volume growth and also produces residual products such as branches and Tree Tops that can be used as biomass in the production of bioenergy different methods are best suited to different situations depending on the goal of the particular forestry operation is [Music] [Music] [Music] foreign
