hi I'm Adam from forty eight and forty eight and I'm going to walk you through the basic difference between the domain name a registrar domain name server or DNS email and website hosting and I'm going to try to map it out here on this white board to make it easy for all of us so to start with you need to have a domain name for your website so in our case at 40 and 48 that's 48 in 48 org is for eight in or eight org that's our domain name now to get this domain name we have to register this domain name somewhere it can't just sort of magically pull up there you got a red shirt somewhere typically you're going to register it somewhere like Namecheap or GoDaddy or one of those type places so that's going to be a domain name registrars so we're going to say right here we have our registrar okay this is where we pay for our domain name this is where we know you're going to pay ten twenty thirty forty fifty dollars a year depending what you're doing domain name is this is like I said GoDaddy Blue Hose Namecheap one of those types of domain name registrar companies this is the registrar then you've got your DNS or your domain name server so the domain name is the address for where people go to your website on the web I type in 48 and 48 org that's registered so it's owned by or sort of leased from you can think of it from a registrar then your domain name server is where the traffic actually gets directed right so the domain name server has two components that's got an a record and it's got an MX record the a record directs a record directs traffic to your website and the MX record directs traffic to your email so you can have your website hosted on one server on the internet and your email hosted an entirely different place on the internet if you want to you can divide those off on your a record in your and your MX record so you've got to have hosting for those things like I mentioned then you got hosting over here we're going to say we web hosting and you've got email hosting so web hosting is our website email hosting is your email obviously now here's what's interesting sometimes DNS is managed by your web hosting and your web hosting is also managing your email hosting so it's all wrapped up into one big giant thing okay sometimes your DNS is management managed by your registrar so you register at GoDaddy and DNS is then manage the GoDaddy and sometimes these three things actually four things our man is completely independently of one another so for example for 48 and 40 org with registered or domain name at GoDaddy our DNS is actually managed at CloudFlare instead so GoDaddy the registrar level points all traffic to the DNS at clouds layer and then cloud so looks at it says ok well all the website traffic is going to go to web hosting which is at WP engine and all the email traffic the MX records is going to go to email hosting which is at Google Apps so in theory you can actually have all of this together so GoDaddy for example does all of this GoDaddy can be a register it can be your DNS it can be your website everything it can be your email hosting alternatively go down it can be just your registrar ok so do you think can all be one or these things can be together or these things can be together or they can all for be separate completely different components of your web and digital presence so at 40 and 48 we like to try to try to point out to people is our goal is to get everybody to manage their DNS at CloudFlare right here CloudFlare is a free DNS management platform where you can go it adds a layer of security it has a lot of different features that are really helpful to you to have it there but ultimately what that means is that at an event for 48 48 we can log into one location clouds layer and we can update the traffic to only your web hosting to point to our server ok so what that means is if prior to a 48 48 event you've done you've gone through courses and don't what you need to do during a lesson and gone your registrar you made sure that CloudFlare is now hosting your dns and this currently cluster import your DNS with all the proper settings for your current website in your current email so then at the event we just pop one into CloudFlare if we change only the a record there and then we point your new web website traffic to the new web hosting that we're providing for you for this first free 30 days so again it goes this one last time hopefully this would be good you get your registrar which is where you pay for the domain name every year like I said 10 20 30 40 $50 a month depending on what our year depending on what kind of domain name you have your DNS is what manages your traffic for your website so when somebody hits 48 and 48 org DNS tell people tell that traffic which servers to go to the a record goes to web hosting MX records point to email there are more records but we're not going to worry about that at this time your web hosting is where your website is hosted is the physical style of your website's files and database Xavier website so it's what people are accessing when they see your website how they get to it how they interact with it and your email hosting is again it's like a Google Apps or it can be Microsoft 365 or one of those types of things where this is where your email is managed you can all be one thing but for the sake of 48 and 48 we separate them out we don't want to mess with the registrar ever we want to deal only with the domain manage servers specifically with this a record that's why we handle it on cloud player so we can then take the a record point it to the web hosting and take your site live at the end of the event hope that was helpful thanks for joining me
