The following videogram contains SPOILERS and pictures that can hour the sensitivity of the spectators. The End of the Mystery STAR WARS Intriguing, isn’t it? Clowns have always fascinated me. What mystery hides under their makeup? Are they just like you and me? You want to find it out? Are you sure? Some mysteries are better left unsolved. Fine, you asked for it. In 1983, after the huge success of the first two episodes, comes into theaters: Star Wars: Return of the Jedi. What a phenomenon. The audience was totally delighted and his universe was already mythical. The score. The sets. The spaceships, the weapons... and the characters. And among these characters, the most iconic of all: Darth Vader. With his frightening breathing, his tall black shape, his impressive mask and his telekinesis power. He naturally became an iconic villain. Possibly the greatest villain in the history of cinema, making his death even more fascinating at the end of the movie. As Luke was about to get killed by the Emperor, Vader remembers his paternal instinct and decides to sacrify himself in order to save his son. Luke carries his nemesis in a safe place and supports him during his las moments. A mythical scene because it shows one of the biggest mysteries of the saga. Luke himself removes his father’s mask to show his real face. Darth Vader takes a last breath, before fully enjoying his new fatherhood. The price to pay for joining the dark side. Bullshit! This is not 1983 anymore. Since then Vader even got his own trilogy. Lucas kills a character then dedicates him three movies. Why? A clue is hidden in this scene. One phrase is going to make an impression. Indeed, even if he is going to die, his soul is saved. This is the well known Vader’s redemption. But another phrase sounds different now. «Help me take this mask off» According to you, the interest of this scene is the death of Vader or the reveal of his face? The true shock of this scene is the Vader’s myth collapsing. He was an icon, he becomes a man again. The greatest villain in the history of cinema, is nothing but a dying old man. By removing his mask, you remove his mystery. Lucas defuses what he created, without being aware that the icon is now stronger than the story. There was a real mystery under the mask of Vader. An infinity of possibilities in the mind of the public. Lucas imposed a choice, and kill all the others. All our fantasies are gone. By the way, a dozen of actors played Vader’s role. So there was literally no one behind that mask. Why was it removed then? Lucas wanted his character to be more human, certainly with the idea of a prelogy in mind. But he didn’t plan that Vader will become the true evil icon of his saga, way ahead the Emperor. Launched into orbit since Episode IV, Vader remains forever the iconic villain of the Star Wars universe. With this scene, the Star Wars saga loses its great villain. And what does a saga worth without a great villain? Lucas will put in place a hole new trilogy to make Vader reborn. three movies to put his mask on. But the prequel trilogy will only remove a little more from the mystery. Even today, Disney tries to recreate the myth. Sometimes by pulling it out of a hat like in Rogue One, sometimes with the character of Kylo Ren. In vain. Vader definitely dies at the end of Return of the Jedi. From now on, the challenge for Disney is to give its saga a whole new villain. We know it won’t be Supreme leader Snoke. For Kylo Ren, the mask is already off. The death of Vader reminds us that the mask is a piece of the character’s identity. Remove the mask... it’s the end of the mystery. You look disapointed. I told you. For me, I always prefer to leave... a part of the mystery. See you soon, and don’t forget: we can miss our life, but not our death. Subtitles: @BaptisteChiloup Translation: Valentin Bayle
