so dublin to a stranger from quieter parts a grim place on a gray day and just as grim and harsh on a bright day the overpowering din of traffic the geography of the city of the suburbs there is so much to take in so many unsmiling faces in a faceless crowd and where to go how to find places for a quiet country girl unprepared for the bustle of city life that's her first problem to her dublin is the compact comfort of that map on the front of the telephone directory it seems to make dublin neat and accessible that was the way francis mcguigan saw dublin when she first arrived from castle blaming it was a question of where to live she tells her own story i hadn't really thought about the life you know how to babe i was just really determined to get out of the small town where i lived because i was brought up in the country i came to dublin four years ago i had imagined it'd be rather big much bigger than what i was used to you know so much traffic so many people rushing here and there you know i guess that i would really be lost you know as i was when i came you know i would come out completely on my own try to find buses here and there you know many a time i got lost you know it's quite small to me now really you know after four years always meeting somebody on the street i know you know i had a job when i first came to dublin luckily enough i was typist in a finance office there were two other girls there with me i didn't know anybody at all in dublin had no relations at all whatsoever so i came completely on my own i'm in a flat at the moment and with two other girls it's a basement flat we have our own kitchen bathroom we have a sitting room quite a large sitting room one bedroom only i own around about nine pounds i find it you know difficult to make ends meet you know have to budget very carefully clothes rent food i get paid by the month which helps a little i can save better then flat i live in is regarded as very reasonable we pay five kennedys a week it was one pound fifteen each but three of us and we into the kitty has recorded we each put a pound we can buy the basic groceries and butter and tea and that sort of thing and usually we cook something about maybe two or three nights a week and then we have a good meal then i normally get a snack then during the day lunchtime breakfast sometimes only we have time about three times a week i treat myself to a really good meal i get by all right on that i don't get drun down or that really you know survive haven't got a very big appetite my mothers are always telling you make sure you get your meals your daily meal the main thing good lunch you know i miss home i definitely do sometimes when i sit and think of it you know i some nights i go home especially in winter nights i go home and on the bus i say to myself i wish i were going home to my family you know so that's when i miss it mostly you know if i sit and think about it i go home every two weeks i get a lift home get home friday night and back first thing on monday morning straight into work i couldn't afford to go home if i had to pay my fair every two weeks quite impossible i don't save at all i'm regardless been a bit of a spin drift really i always have to get help from home usually every month and of course when i go on the weekend i have to get something to come back to live on for the week as well from my parents living in a flat to go to quite a lot of parties really i have boyfriends one steady one at the moment and go out with him about four nights a week go to theater pictures and only for that i think my social life would be well i couldn't afford to have a really good social life only that i do have a boyfriend my one ambition is to eventually settle down in dublin but i like to live in the suburbs i love the suburbs south side especially have a family of course
