it's hard not to make the playoffs with a franchise quarterback but congratulations after this one is I don't know they talked about staying in this Talent last year missing the Playoffs now this year you got a 27 point lead with all that Talent yep all the best created Chargers do I have to get into it I mean this is just it's just mind-numbing because the charger fans will go we've seen this from the US disappointed in the Chargers offense passing game doing a disservice to Justin Herbert one of the greatest arms in the history of football here we are at the end of another playing season for this team and uh it's the same old phrase I I don't know how the Chargers can come back from that the Los Angeles Chargers have had devastating ends in back-to-back Seasons two years ago the charges fell apart late in the season and missed the playoffs after losing a week 18 matchup in overtime last season they did make the postseason and even LED 27-0 but somehow some way they lost the Chargers still haven't won a playoff game with Justin Herbert and the clock is ticking Herbert has two years left on his rookie deal and that then he becomes expensive the best time to win is now but after the Chargers wasted the career of Philip Rivers you have to ask yourself will they do the same for Justin Herbert the Los Angeles Chargers had the sixth overall pick at the 2020 NFL draft they got the pick after going 5-11 in 2019 which was the final season with Philip Rivers on the roster he was a starter for 14 years and Herbert was supposed to succeed him and he did Herbert started his rookie season as the backup to Tyrod Taylor but started in week two after Tyron had his lung punctured accidentally by the team doctor yes that actually happened and if you ask me I think the team doctor just had money on the over on Justin Herbert yards Herbert ended up having a super impressive first career start passing for 311 yards a touchdown and an interception while forcing the Chiefs to overtime but the Chargers ended up losing whoever did end up losing his first four starts but don't get it twisted he playing poorly over that span he complete deleted 68.8 percent of his passes with 1200 yards and nine touchdowns to three interceptions in week five Herbert even passed for four touchdowns without a single interception on Monday Night Football but Los Angeles still found a way to lose to the Saints two weeks later Herbert finally picked up his first career win over the Jaguars he threw for 350 yards and three touchdowns without a pick Herbert was solid but the Chargers continued to struggle losing five of their next six including a 45-0 loss to the Patriots where Herbert threw two interceptions now that was a very worrying performance but it all worked out and the Chargers final four games of the year Herbert passed for 1112 yards eight touchdowns and a single interception Los Angeles seemed to have finally found that secret formula and went 4-0 to finish the season with a 7-9 record Herbert played in all but one game completing 66.6 of his passes through through for 4 336 yards 31 touchdowns and 10 interceptions his 31 touchdowns were the most by a rookie in NFL history but he also broke the rookie records for passing yards per game and completions he even made an impact on the ground with 234 yards and five touchdowns Justin Herbert had some high expectations coming into his sophomore season and he just continued to prove himself he helped the Chargers jump out to a 4-1 record and showed that his rookie year was no fluke those first five weeks displayed a lot of potential for Herbert but there were a lot of bumps in the road in the near future the charges went on to lose four of their next six and Herbert struggled at times throwing for 11 touchdowns with seven interceptions over the stretch Los Angeles rallied with back-to-back wins in week 13 and 14 to sit at 8-5 the Chargers were in a good spot to make the postseason short of a collapse but that's exactly what they did they lost three of their next four including an over over time in week 18 versus the Raiders to miss out on the playoffs and finish with a 9-8 record it was disappointing but there was still plenty of Hope for the future behind Justin Herbert he finished with 5 000 yards and 38 touchdowns to 15 interceptions with a 65.9 completion percentage rushing Herbert had 300 yards and three touchdowns he made his first Career Pro Bowl became the first Chargers quarterback to pass for over 5 000 yards and broke the record for the most passing yards in total touchdowns and a player's first two seasons missing out narrowly on the postseason in 2021 just had to sting but Los Angeles turned around and made the playoffs in 2022. the Chargers faced off against the Jaguars in the wild card and it felt like Jacksonville could just do nothing right Trevor Lawrence threw four interceptions and Los Angeles LED 27-0 but somehow Jacksonville came back to win 31-30 it was the third largest blown lead in NFL playoff history to be honest Dent may have hurt even more than barely missing the postseason the Chargers did have a good year though they went 10-7 in the regular season and Justin Herbert performed well again he sent franchise records for past attempts and completions Herbert had a 68.2 completion percentage a career high with 4739 yards and 25 touchdowns to 10 interceptions Los Angeles made the easy decision to pick up his fifth year option but he'll be expensive soon and the Chargers really want to win while he's cheap before handing him that massive extension when you look at the Chargers roster one of the biggest things that stands out is the receiving Corps Los Angeles has some very good wide receivers and they just got another one Quentin Johnston the Chargers had the 21st overall pick at the 2023 draft and used it on Johnston he spent three seasons at TCU and got better every year Johnston was first team all Big 12 in his last two seasons in Fort Worth and he was a big reason for tcu's run to the National Championship last season Johnston played in 14 games with 1069 yards and he also hit the sixth touchdown Mark for the second straight year he showed a ton of Promise in college and now he gets to join two other stud wide receivers in Los Angeles Keenan Allen and Mike Williams Keenan Allen missed some time last season with a hamstring injury and was even rumored to be traded or released this off-season but he will be back after restructuring his contract Ellen has been one of the top receivers in the league in recent years and has eclipsed a thousand yards in four of the last six seasons he's been in Los Angeles since 2013 and has been a true staple for the Chargers but he hasn't led the team in receiving yards in either of the past two seasons it's actually been Mike Williams a Chargers 2017 first round pick now Williams took a couple of seasons to turn into what the Chargers had hoped but he did surpass a thousand yards for the first time in 2019 and did it again 2021 the Chargers are going to have a good one two three but there are some other interesting names I have to at least bring up Josh Palmer he was a 2021 third rounder and broke out last season with 769 yards the second most on the team and three touchdowns Quentin Johnston wasn't the only wide receiver the Chargers took at the draft either not only that he wasn't the only TCU wide receiver in the fourth round they drafted Darius Davis who had over 500 yards receiving and each of his last two collegiate Seasons to really get the full Horned Frogs effect the Chargers followed It Up by taking quarterback Max Duggan to make matters even funnier there were four TCU players drafted and all four are heading to Los Angeles the other was cornerback travius Hodges Tomlinson who was selected by the Rams the Chargers have done a good job building around Justin Herbert and they're going to be a very pass heavy offense that should have a lot of success but they are in a very tough division the Chiefs are still Kings of the AFC West and are coming off of another Super Bowl Patrick with Holmes is no doubt the best quarterback in the league and it seems like nobody has been able to stop Kansas City meanwhile the rest of the division should be better too the Raiders signed Jimmy Garoppolo who has played in two of the last four NFC championships he's a winner when he's healthy and the Raiders are going to have some good pieces around him the Broncos were supposed to be good last season but somehow sucked Russell Wilson was terrible but now that Denver traded for Sean Payton there is an expectation that they will turn it around the Chargers are a good team but with how good the AFC West is it's going to be a dog fight and they could reasonably finish in last place if things don't go their way the Chargers really did waste Philip River's career there's a reason why Eli Manning didn't want to play for the Chargers Rivers was great but never got a ring while Eli won two somehow I still don't know how that happened the Chargers just have a history of failure and now you have to worry if they're gonna do that again Dean Spano and the entire Spanos family has been a train wreck but hopefully Justin Herbert doesn't have to suffer the same ringless fate as Philip Rivers did [Music] foreign
