hey everyone wolf lordro here today we're discussing the praetorian of Terror rogaldone with the frustrations he faced throughout the heresy General spoiler warning to begin as the events we're discussing today are from across the Warhammer 40K universe as always I really recommend you read the stories for yourself first without spoilers as that's the best way to enjoy the law for yourself but with that said let's just jump straight in it's hard to argue the Pinnacle of the imperium's existence wasn't the Triumph at eulinore here at the height of the great Crusade the all-campire was shattered and the emperor proclaimed his chosen War Master Horus lupacao such was Mankind's dominance across the Galaxy the emperor could now progress to the next stage of his grand plan the Conquering of the web way leaving the rest of the Crusade to his sons alone of the primarks upon his return to Terror the emperor would have rogal by his side proclaiming him his praetorian within the very start of the heresy series all those many years ago now Horus Rising we were witness to the beginning of Dawn's Duty informing the sons of Horus that he and his Legion would be departing The Crusade with the emperor we are charged to return to the Homeworld dawn said conversationally his voice was low and astonishingly soft like the lap of water on a distant Beach but there was a strength running through it like the tension of a steel cable the emperor has asked us to fortify the Imperial stronghold and who am I to question the emperor's needs the debate will rage eternally on just what the emperor foresaw and what he didn't why he appointed Dawn the praetorian of Terror and asked him to fortify the palace was it for the war in the web way to come or instead the heresy I'm not sure we've ever had that discussion so maybe we can do that soon but whatever the reason whatever the emperor knew and didn't know it's a certainty rogal would have had no idea how quickly his life would change returning to Terror to fortify in the palace roguel instead would find himself appointed Lord commander of the Imperium marshaling its defense with the Betrayal of Horus this was certainly a responsibility rogal never signed up for an incredulous turn of events that would defy belief with him having to contemplate war with his brothers yet with rogal on terror being upon the throne world with the emperor himself there was really no debate no one better positioned and there's obviously been a bit of speculation over the years about rebute being the preferred and better choice that Dawn was just a placeholder fueled mainly by the words of dawn himself within the novel master of mankind you quote my own brother at me Dawn narrowed his gaze rabute is not here Oblivion night would that he were in his absence I Am Lord commander of the Imperium and given reboots a success with Ultramar it's hard to argue he wouldn't be the number one option behind Horus but it was rogal to who the responsibility fell and as we approach the very end of the siege of Terror I think we can all agree none could have done it any better but while the annihilation and Apocalypse of the siege of Terror would be to come it's the earlier years of the heresy that for me were quite possibly the real test for Dawn in many ways with the siege he had his armies to command with him his defenses to strategize his brothers to rely on though he would bear its scars mentally and physically thereafter it was war it was a Siege his realm with the years earlier with word of the heresy breaking the Imperium responding and reacting as best it could and the warp storms beginning to plague the Galaxy there rogel was to command away from the theater of war left to wait weeks months to hear reports and messages to hope his instructions would be played out with no real way of affecting the outcome for by the time he received word of what had transpired the battle or event would be long gone that is a true test for a Primark the test of inability of inaction of patience and reliance there's examples of it throughout the entire heresy as rogal did what he could to stem the tide from Terror to prepare the throne World 4 what's to come even after his brothers had begun to arrive at Sarah it was still a struggle with rogal having to deal with relationships as a brother not a soldier with sanguineous and the blood Angel's arrival he unveiled his plan for beta Garmin to slow the war Master's forces the greatest Marshal of Imperial mites prior to the siege itself only to have Russ inform him he's leaving for Fenris instead the holy Bay ended with Dawn shouting in frustration after Russ as he left the room highlighting how meaningless titles are when it comes to dealing with fellow primarks just one more of the hurdles Dawn struggled to manage and there were quite possibly emotions and frustrations built up there from over the years and some I've only recently stumbled across within the novel The Outcast did we are witness to the earliest days of the heresy upon Terror a time when the retribution Fleet is on route to istan and a time when the difficulties of Dawn's new position and responsibilities are surprisingly emerging already the first hint of his years of Trials to come in the aftermath of horus's rebellion breaking we know the emperor in reality rogal dispatched his retribution Fleet to bring Horus and his fellow traitor Legions to heal the retribution fleet's first wave was to be led by Ferris Manus and the iron hands korax and the Raven guard and Vulcan and the salamanders with the second wave of reinforcements to be kurz's night Lords alfarious and the alpha Legion perturobo and the iron Warriors and logar with his word bearers unbeknownst to the Imperium the second wave all were already in secret Allied to Horus and a Galaxy away all the way back on the throne World itself all roguel could do was wait for news and there's a great moment where the astropaths and heads of the choir are trying desperately to contact the iron hands do you have communion yet ask the choir Master his voice sounding as though it came from impossibly far away though he stood right next to IBN kalden give him time Nemo said mistress sarashina her voice maternal and soothing we will know when the link is made the astropaths of the iron hands are not subtle I am aware of that anik replied the choir master I trained most of them then you should know better than to rush this I know that's well enough but Lord Dawn is impatient for news of Ferris masses Fleet and he has a gun now obviously rogal's not standing there with a gun to their heads he's not even in the room at the time but it's a great little moment even said half ingest that highlights how important this moment is the kind of joke you half-heartedly make to break the tension of something but even there in that line Dawn's presence weighs heavy his personality already bridling at the confines and chains of Terror laying the pressure on the servants beneath him in something that would only get worse as the years go by I know that well enough but Lord Dawn is impatient for news of Ferris manis's Fleet and he has a gun you've got to imagine Dawn's made some kind of reference to shooting them if they don't find out what's going on and while it's unlikely he would do that it is the perfect example of the frustrations he's beginning to feel already the weight of the moment and on a side note I love that reference to the astropaths of the eye in hands not being subtle the implication of how the legion's astropaths must take on the character of their Legion just a small thing a tiny detail but it's those kind of things that make the law so great that make the universe have that rich depth to it that make it feel alive how all of the Servants of a legion are molded and shaped by its nature however of course rogel simply can't stay away and moments later he enters into the chamber something that not only is he not supposed to be allowed to do but something he really shouldn't be doing either none of the gates of Terror are bad to me choir Master said Dawn and his words were like bright streamers ejected from the corona of a volatile Style they lingered long after he spoke and IBN calden felt the power Ripple outwards through the awestruck choir this is a sealed ritual protested the choir Master you should not be here Dawn marched towards the center of the Mind Hall and even calden felt his skin prickle at the nearest of such a forceful implacable psyche the majority of mortal Minds simmered with a mundane clutter close to the surface but rogaldorn's mind was an impregnable Fortress hard-aged and unyielding of its secrets no one learned anything from dawn he did not want them to know my brothers are approaching istfan 5 said Dawn I need to be here the response from dawn there is very telling my brothers are approaching eastvan 5. I need to be here 's a Galaxy away completely unable to affect events in any way at all that's not simply a strategic or practical response it's an emotional one rogel needs to be there he needs to find out what's going on what's Happening because he wants to know he craves it it's very much foreshadowing for the years ahead rogal upon Terror Shoring up the palace and the throne world as best he can hoping for word from elsewhere from his brothers that's something anything good has transpired for all his stoicism his reserved nature rogel's never been more Human Than This Moment he just has to be here in this room to see it firsthand for himself to hear it himself and despite the difficulties at establishing communication with a ship across the Galaxy they eventually managed to do so and there's some more great little references to how the astropath can tell it's an iron hands vessel the Spartan nature of the other astropaths chamber the psychic images of Iron hands around them the cold feel and taste of metal again it's a little thing but something I would love to see more of the looks and feels of different Legions Communications how other astropaths can tell by the feel who they're talking to how much more eloquence a message may be from say an ultramarine astropath or a blood Angel one and the message comes through blunts in true eye in hand fashion The Fleets were making good speed that's how the iron hands were going to arrive in system first Angel Ferris was going to make Planet 4 before even korax and Vulcan arrived determined to take fullgram's head to be the emperor's Avenger and here not even rogel's mind Fortress could keep his feelings hidden as his inner frustrations are truly revealed damn your impatience Ferris you will be the death of me hist Dawn his voice betraying a measure of the terrible burden he bore the plan requires you to follow my orders to the letter the Primark of the Imperial fists turned to the choir master there is no more you are sure this is the entirety of the message if abir IBN kaldan says there is no more then there is no more stated the choir Master we will filter the bleed for any residual meaning or hidden subtext but IBN calden is one of our best rounded upon the man one of your best why would you not employ your best telepath for so crucial a message the choir Master exchanged the look with sarashina and IBN calden felt their unease as they formed the image of an astropath who had long since left the whispering tower for the lofty Heights of secondment to a patrician House of the navis nobleites our best is not yet Among Us said the choir master I ordered you to utilize every and all means to bring me reliable information from the frontier said Dawn his hand closing over the Onyx and gold pommel of his heavy bladed sword do any of you people understand what is at stake I am forced to wage a war I cannot see to fight a foe I cannot gauge and the only way I can do that is if I know exactly what is happening on route to istan to save the Imperium I need you to use only your best operatives the truth is all that matters and there it is that small little description his voice betraying the terrible burden he bore that's what sets the heart of it all the burden of Duty that rogel bears he doesn't want to be on terror he wants to be out there leading from the front getting the answers for himself and bringing the emperor's vengeance yes he's not Duty demanded he returned to Terror and now Duty demand he remain It's a cruel fate for rogal in reality and even here at the very beginning before the tragedy that follows transpires roguel already feels the weight of his responsibility bridling at his chains to Terror so much so he can't help himself snapping at the servants around him rogaldorn rounded upon the man one of your best why would you not employ your best telepath for so crucial a message one of our best it's a turn of phrase something that most likely anyone else would not have picked up on yet rogal in his frustration nails down on it straight away looking for any flaw to be exercised and it's not the choir Master Dawn is truly angry at here it's his brother Ferris for not following his plan it's Horus for the whole mess in the first place for leaving him lost and without answers yance rogul can't speak to them relay his frustrations so all he can do is take it out on those around him in a remark or two perhaps harsher than intended the duty Dawn performs in the heresy is really Second To None the one Primark who really has to fight against his desires from day one a lot is made of rogel's ability to fortify to hold worlds but let's make no mistake about it rogal did not want to be on terror he wanted to be out there taking the fight to the enemy looking his betraying Brothers in the eye much is made of the sacrifice of sanguineous and rightly so but rogel undoubtedly deserves recognition because even here so early on in the days of the heresy even before the tragedy of istvan we can see he was sacrificing from the very beginning yet not once did he break not once did he give in to those frustrations he did as rogal always would his duty from the very beginning of the heresy to the very end but as always everyone what do you think are you surprised rogel felt such frustration so early on in the heresy is it something you would have expected the Lord Commander to be more in control of or considering the situation the Betrayal of primarks his own Brothers something so completely unbelievable is it simply a human reaction and given how Dawn would be upon Terror for virtually the entire heresy fighting his own impulses and desires to take the enemy head on is his sacrifice truly the greatest of the heresy and does it make his grief in its aftermath all the more tragic as always everyone leave your thoughts in the comments below huge thank you to all my subscribers your support truly means a lot to me
