Imagine if PLFL did projects like this? Just simple fast projects that have utility

Homey don't do simple and fast.

Five videos minimum. Whole lot of plumbing, leveling, and squaring involved...ain't gonna happen...cuz grampa's Ship Framing Square is under the Tyvek drain, maybe, or in the compost heap, and the $800 Bosch Laser Level is broke after the garage door lighting install.

They wouldn't build garage shelving because they'd rather buy shelving which then they can promote via amazon links and earn money. Everything is a cash grab to them.

I love the Whites. Simple stuff that looks good. Their small house in one summer series is how it should be done... and that girl loves her some pocket holes.

From the thumbnail, appears screwed together and to the wall? Not a huge fan. Workshop areas (assuming that's what it is from the crude 2x shelving) tend to gather large, heavy things and weight can add up quickly. Without rabbiting the supports, all that weight is in shear on the the screws (or nails). Based on the seam I can see on the bottom shelf, they ripped the ply lengthwise, which puts fewer plys across the gap. Topshelf looks to only have a single cross brace.

Adding blocking behind the uprights and between shelves on the wall would also work to transfer the weight to the floor. Cross cut the ply so the maximum number of plys is across the gap and add bracing where the edges butt each other.

Now if it's just for boxes of xmas decorations and sleeping bags,... nevermind.

hi guys my name is jacob white in this video i'm going to show you how to build my all-time favorite utility shelf [Music] the reason this shelving is my favorite is because it only costs about ten dollars a linear foot to build and it's really simple to build in an hour and a half of your time with three simple tools you can build this shelf i think this is a project that anybody that wants to build shelving can build [Music] okay guys am i ready to get started on my garage shelving um you can see we've got a bare wall here that's in this side of the garage this is the non-heated side we really need some storage so i'm going to show you a real quick easy shelving system that me and my wife have come up with and you can build this really simple so we got some two by fours we got some plywood and all we're going to need is some simple tools we got a circular saw we have our drill tape square pencil and a chalk line and then some screws to attach it all together so i'm going to show you really quick in this video how to build some shelving so for each shelf you're going to need two 2x4 supports i'm doing four shelves uh in the shelf system so i need eight uh supports and they're all being cut at 12 foot so i got all my shelf boards cut now i'm going to go ahead and start attaching them to the wall normally on my shelves i like to go 20 inches tall because most totes that you put in are 18 inches tall so i mean if you have to customize something you can choose whatever height you want so i'm going to go ahead and mark uh the tops of where i want all my shelves to be so we're going to go for a 20 inch shelf our two by fours are going to take up uh three and a half inches so you got one two three and a half that's where our two by four will be and then our 24 will be the height of the plywood so from there now we can go we know that distance now we can go up 48 or 47 and a half that will allow for our 20 inches in between the shelves and then from there we're at 71 and a half [Music] if i were to put up the shelf boards um but here's a trick because you know obviously these things are 12 feet long these two by fours so it's hard to hold it by yourself and put it on so one thing is to make yourself a spacer block we're going to put it on the end and go ahead and screw this 2x4 to the wall [Music] so i got 2x4 on the mark okay so i got one screw on so obviously most times garage floors aren't perfect so you can't really go off of the floor so we're gonna go ahead and use the level and and level this first one up put more screws in where the studs are okay so i got the first one up so we're just going to move our block up and we're going to repeat put the rest of them on there so wherever you want to show put a 2x4 so obviously when you put these on we're using three inch screws and then they will attach these to the studs that are in the wall so you have a solid uh something very sturdy to tie into make sure that you mark all the studs on the wall this wall we can see very easily but on like a sheet rock wall sometimes you need to find your studs and then they'll either be on a 16 or a 24 inch layout [Music] all building materials come in lengths of you know two so like 2 by four eight by ten twelve fourteen and the reason we did uh twelve foot shelf obviously we'd go a little bit longer on our shelves in here right but we stuck with the twelve hundred because plywood comes in four bait sheets four-way sheets are really nice because you have an eight and then you can take a half a sheet rip it in half there you have 12 feet so keep that in mind when you're building shelves it'll keep the cost down a little bit you may have to shorten yourself in by a foot or something but if you do like a number of 13 and a half or something like that i think that the costs are going to go up and you have a lot more scraps so keep that in mind when you're building that if you plan with the building materials the way they come maybe you can save yourself a bit of time and money now here's my other thing that i'm going to do that makes sheldon really easy to put on is we're just going to go ahead and put a 2x4 right over top of this but we're just going to tack it with one screw and then i'm going to show you how we're going to make these shelves really fast [Music] done now we're going to repeat this step and we'll do it on all the other three so we're putting the two by fours on the outside all i'm doing here is just it's one screw and a cleat you probably have hanging around your shop whatever you're building right there okay then we go ahead [Music] and then you know that one is where it needs to be so then you could start there get it right you can go ahead and put a screw in so as simple as that one little block then you just remove it when you're done it is nice to have two hands on the job but if for some reason you don't have somebody helping you it can always be done [Music] okay [Music] we got our main boards on which are screwed onto the wall we have our two by fours which are going to be the outside of the shelves which are just tacked on now we can go ahead and show you how to put the uprights on right now [Music] uh one thing you want to do when you put your uprights on the temporary screws that are attaching the front one you want to make sure you don't cover them up [Music] [Music] now we're going to go ahead and unscrew the screws which we tacked the 2x4 on right here we're going to remove the whole shelf system and move it out 24 inches and that would be our shelf [Music] oh yeah now we're free right so our shelf system is about 24 we're ready for some plywood okay so uh we have our pieces here we cut them at 21 because we want our overall shelves to be 24 inches deep and so we're basically just trying to achieve getting these blocks put in these aren't really structural at all they're just supporting the plywood so um just toenailing some screws in yeah if you have a krig jig this would work really good for this but this works just fine the way it is yeah so i'll just keep putting these on here you'll be good to go so these are supports for the plywood ends this is right at eight feet i like to make my shelves either 16 or 24 inches deep these are 24's the reason that you do that is 16 or 24 is because a 4x8 sheet a sheet of plywood comes in 48 inches wide so you can get three reps out of 16 or 2 out of 24. this way you get the most out of your materials i went ahead got all the cleats in here and everything we need you can see that this is pretty uh solid shelving and uh it's all said and done so now all we have to do is just drop in the plywood and got shelving so i'm using a 7 16 osb it's plenty strong enough for these shelves we're going to build it's very economical i think this runs about fifteen dollars a sheet that's your hardware store you can use whatever you want you can use half inch ac plywood half inch cdx if you want it to look nice there's different materials you can use but i wouldn't use anything thinner than a half inch thick because 24 inches wide start putting a lot of weight on there and you might get a little bit of a bow but for this application this will work fine i'll show you how to do it take this off shock line and tape measure that's all you really need so as you can see i kind of laid this out i'm not too worried about the plywood being this way the eight foot lengthwise because we want to rip this in 24 inches wide you can see i got three sheets stacked together i went ahead and i used my screw gun and i just found a piece of scrap 2x4 i ran a screw right down through there and these pieces of plywood are all flush i did both ends here that way i know that both are here flush i measured from this side over 24 made a mark on both ends i snapped the line and from there i have my line that i know that i need for the cut so i'm going to cut all three sheets at once so i don't have to go ahead and repeat this process three times i'm only going to do it once so now we need to set the depth of our saw and you do that a little adjustment lever on this side we're going to cut all three sheets at the same time so i like to go a little bit below the the actual cutting i lock my blade or lock my depth in there so a lot of times people when they're using a circular saw and you're constantly always looking at the mark on the table well it's really hard to do and it's really hard to do when you're ripping plywood so i'll show you this little mark right here that's on this is this little mark right here there's always a saw mark and that is actually where the blade is cutting so if you line this up right in the middle of your mark your snap line your chalk line there and just follow that right there and just push it in a straight line you know that that blade will be right on that chalk line so that is the best way to do it because if you watch your blade you can start doing this number and bind your blade but if you're always looking out here at this mark and you're on there it should just rip right through there [Music] and they're pretty easy now you have all three three sheets of your plywood cut and they're ready to go on [Music] [Music] [Music] the shelves here are eight foot pieces put in we have two more on the table right over there and we have four foot left because we built ourselves 12 foot shelves so we're going to go ahead and cross cut both of those to 48 and then those should fit our last two sheets so if you're cutting on saw horses and you're doing the cross cut put something underneath them we've got some two by fours underneath them if you don't it's going to fall or readjust your sawhorses so right now we got 48 we got this mark in the middle we could probably just go buy it because lsb comes three marked and we're not looking for tons of accuracy but i know that that mark right there is 48 so we'll just go ahead and use that without having to chalk the line [Music] okay so pretty straightforward and we can look at that so the other thing too is if you leave your factory edges together they're 100 square a lot of times your rip cuts if you're really good can be square but if you want to go ahead and put those together you have nice tight seams [Music] okay so i got all the plywood on the shelving and went ahead and got some smaller screws you don't need big screws you can buy these by the founder and hardware store any screws that work i really like these torque head ones you don't need a ton of screws maybe like every two foot somewhere in there it'd be fine [Music] just like that i'll go ahead and finish screwing this on there so we got 12 24 48 feet of two foot wide shelves here think about all the stuff you can put away in your shop have it off the floor and have it easily accessible for when you want to go use it so hey this shelving turned out really good built in about an hour now i'm going to the other side i'm going to build another one when i build that second shelf i'm going to show you a couple different techniques that you can actually if you're working with somebody that helps you out like chalk lines and things like that so time lapse it you can watch it maybe pick up some tips there's no wrong way to build this but maybe some of these tips will help you build your shelf a little faster or a little better [Music] [Music] so i built a lot of shelving in my life and you know um my wife came up with this design and it's super economical and super friendly because no not everybody has a lot of time to spend on building stuff right these shelves right here um they're two foot wide 12 foot long there's four of them and built this shelf in less than probably an hour started at one o'clock and by the time i was done i cleaned up the mess it was 3 30 i'm out here i think we have uh six sheets of plywood in here six sheets times 32 is uh right around 200 square feet of shelving space for all your stuff that you want to store off the floor and super handy you can use it as a workbench there's uh um you can store you know you build yourself a little higher you can store your bikes underneath it it's super nice for floors that are uneven like a concrete floor concrete floors are never flat and so like you're always like adjusting here and there so you go and you measure and everything well this takes out all this the uh the flaws in the floor because you basically when you put your two two by fours on the wall and then you put your stringers up you move it out it's done it's it's it's completely uh um it's that quick i can't go on and on but you know what i have about 200 square feet of shelving and lots of gear and lots of stuff that i like to get put on these shelves so i'm going to get to it if you want the specifics for these shelves and actually a cut list and all this stuff uh visit anaway.com so thanks for watching and we'll see you guys next week [Music] you
