The Best Coin Capsules for Gold and Silver

coin capsules do you need them for your gold should you get them for your silver which are best and where do you get them let's take a look i don't think i've posted a video yet that hasn't had a question about capsules in the comments so we're going to cover the basic questions of where to get them when to use them and then i'm going to change out some of my old uh gold coin capsules to use direct fit rather than the black ring capsules i've been using it's amazing how much better a coin can look just based on the capsule it's presented in so even if you know everything there is to know about capsules stick around for a few minutes to see the before and after on some buffaloes in their new homes so let's start with gold i don't care if the coin is a 20 francs rooster re-strike or a five nines fine canadian commemorative if it's gold i'm putting it in a capsule that is uh if i can get it open here we go so the first coins i have to look at are one quarter ounce american gold eagles they're 22 karat or 91.67 percent gold with just over eight percent copper and silver to harden them up and you could argue that 22 carat coins don't need capsules because they're hard they're meant more for circulation but i like capsules for two reasons first they keep you going as you can see i keep dropping these i guess maybe i'm making a point uh they keep your gold safe and my only gripe with local coin shops is product availability so not only do shops not have what i want at my every whim uh they don't have the coins i want in the shape that i want them in and maybe ordering online has made me picky but i can't tell you how many times i've stopped into a shop to check on inventory only to pass on a coin or coins because they have too much wear these are in perfect condition i got them online i put them in a capsule that's where they've lived as you can see i'm not afraid to take them out but there are no scratches on these coins they're in perfect condition and the reason they're in perfect condition is because i keep them in capsules so people will tell you that gold is gold and these coins are just bullion and scratch doesn't matter but it matters to me and i know i'm not the only person who gets bothered by scratches i figure these are expensive coins i want to keep them nice i'm going to do everything i can to do that so first and foremost the top question i get is what kind of capsules do you use i use airtights and there are a number of different kinds of airtights these are the black ring airtights and i've been using these for a long time so one quarter ounce gold american eagle excuse me american gold eagles use a 22 millimeter ring so these cases uh these air tights you're gonna get the same outer diameter whether you're stacking quarter ounce maples or quarter ounce eagles they have a different diameter themselves but the difference in the capsules are the black ring in those cases you can stack them in a single tube and nobody will know any different don't worry i'm going to drop some links in the comments telling you exactly where to get these so what about silver silver is a shiny metal that has a tendency to get less shiny as the years go by especially if you handle it often now i don't recommend keeping one ounce silver coins and capsules but mostly i just say that because you'd be spending an extra 50 cents or so on every coin to pay for the capsule and it just doesn't make sense but i mentioned two reasons i like putting coins in capsules and the second reason i like them is that they reduce clutter so i like the image of a chest full of coins as much as the next kid from the 80s but that doesn't store well capsules and tubes that stores well so most of my silver coins i just leave in the mint tubes but i've got a couple tubes with direct fit eagles and i probably always will back to gold so if you've been hanging out waiting to see those buffaloes and their new homes this is the part for you [Music] so the reason i have these coins in the black ring and white ring airtights is pretty simple i started buying gold um one ounce canadian maple leaf coins and i did have an eagle as one of my earliest coins but i had a few maples and a gold canadian maple leaf i think that's really a good place to start because they really started the karat bullion fad fad that's not the way to put it but this is a coin that's four nines fine and what that means if nothing else is that it's super soft so if you wanted to do the tooth test and take a bite out of it you would see the dent from your tooth same goes if you drop that coin so putting them in an airtight with a foam ring is just good solid practice now the gold buffalo it's four nines fine again it's 24 karat gold which means it's soft now this coin doesn't look like it can scratch uh but it can so having that extra foam ring i don't know it's not bad practice at least it wasn't when i got started i've noticed that they haven't really shown dents now the eagle the american gold eagle is a different story 22 carat coin i mentioned this earlier 91.67 percent gold the coin itself has one troy ounce but this is a harder coin it's meant more for circulation than the gold buffalo it might not need that foam ring but with the gold buffalo that extra padding it really can't hurt that said after having these coins for about 10 years i'm really not gonna be playing with them in a way that i'm gonna do any damage and airtight makes more capsules than these you see here they actually make a direct fit capsule as well and they look really nice any time i watch a florida stacker video or silver britches who i think i think he'd probably admit this he probably stole that from florida as well he has his coins they have their coins in the direct fit capsules like this and they just look fantastic because you can see the reeded edges you can see more of the gold it just looks nicer and like those tubes of american silver eagles that are direct fit they let you see the silver the actual color of the metal from the side of the tube those direct fit capsules let you do the same thing when you have gold in them and there's just something about that glow of gold that looks super cool so i'm gonna take these out and rather than hide them in the white and the black foam rings i'm gonna put them in some direct some direct fit capsules and if things work out the way i hope they're gonna work out i'm not gonna drop these coins onto this knife here and put a big gouge in them all right so give me give me a second to concentrate here perfect so look at this thing okay so now you can see the edges you can see more of the gold the outer diameter of this capsule is the same as it was with the black ring let me grab one so uh they look different there's just as safe as they were before at least really close and uh there's just a little bit more gold you can see a little bit more of the detail around the edges get this open without cutting my fingers uh there's just something about having that tube of gold you can actually see that's gonna present a little bit nicer than it does with the rings that's not to say that there's anything wrong with the goal with the black ring or the white ring air tights actually you're probably better off in terms of safety really getting into that detail i just like the way these look and i've been meaning to do this for a while that looks fantastic uh i'm going to grab the rest of these put them in the direct fit but i'm probably not going to make you sit through it all and make i'll make you watch me do this one by one so hold on one second let me flip these in and i will be right back as promised i got a handful of these buffaloes and the direct fit capsules and here they are they look fantastic uh so much so that you're going to want to smash that like button like you're watching a graham stefan video i bet that guy will never show you gold buffaloes and direct fit tubes though so where we at we talked about airtight capsules a few different kinds uh the 22 millimeters for the quarter ounce gold american eagles uh they're actually a 20 millimeter for the canadian maple one quarter ounce gold coins the buffaloes and the one ounce american gold eagles require a 32 millimeter direct fit or black ring case and the maples are a 30 millimeter these capsules are easy to find you can find them on amazon i'm going to give you some links a lot of times they'll come with these tubes that i have them in and they will let you look at the gold handle the gold and not ding up the gold the other thing they'll do oh hell i lost some gold hold on one second i lost a buffalo uh like i was saying the other thing they'll do is make it easy to store the gold and hopefully not lose the gold which you probably think is impossible to do but i have i have at least one quarter rounds gold american eagle american gold eagle whatever coin that's totally missing in action right now i don't have a clue where it is and it's driving me crazy the idea here would be get that gold get that gold in a capsule and then don't mess around with the gold don't take the gold out make youtube videos or whatever but seriously though how fantastic does this stuff look it's hard to throw it in a tube throw it in a safe and forget about it it's just too much fun to grab out once in a while and if i wasn't clear about this before these tubes are also made by airtight they'll fit 20 capsules per tube and that's the same for one ounce gold or silver coins and i think the smaller tubes fit 25 quarter ounce coin capsules but i guess i'll never find out if i keep losing my quarters now i focused a bit on gold capsules today because i think it's more important to protect the softer yellow metal but like i said they're available for just about any standard silver coin or bar i like to use these for 10 ounce silver bars as well like the sunshine mint bars or the royal canadian mint bars but regardless of whether they're for silver or gold that lets us get rid of these stupid things these worthless flips we get from the dealers when we buy online so here's
