welcome back to exotic our play place everybody mark here again so today we're gonna talk about the best of the 3-series BMW lineups now your let's just say your shopper you're looking for a 3-series BMW maybe you're looking for a used one maybe a new one maybe you're currently in a used 3 Series BMW and you're looking at upgrading to what we have behind us here which is the new 3-series is the newest car actually better than everything before it that is the ultimate question is it worth the upgrade going to the newest car or is the older generations really a better car is it more - the ultimate driving machine than the new car let's take a look at some of the previous generations and show you what they really have going for them let's go the first generation more or less that we even care about is the e30 right here here's an example of an e30 the e30 was one of the first generations and was a real driver's car the e30 had an m3 as well I mean it had the M car but look at these cars I mean they have a very simplistic body style to them there's not a lot of weight pack behind these things you could get them in a manual typically is the way you found these you can get this early generation in the e30 here in several different engine configurations I mean you had the four-cylinder normally aspirated car you also had an m3 which was a 4-cylinder turbo or you could get straight sixes and that's ultimately where they carved their name with the straight-6 engines was based in this car the 3-series is a lightweight car with a normally aspirated inline 6-cylinder was just a pleasure to drive with a manual transmission very light very simple car and very nice nonetheless if you look look around basic taillights almost something that you'd get from a kit you know almost very kit car like very simplistic upright excellent visibility overall a fairly attractive car in its day not over-the-top very subdued if you will but an overall very nice car sporting quick handled like it was on Rails and actually at a time when BMWs were not overly expensive they were more focused just on a good Drive and then what we have over here the next generation was the e36 I owned a car like this once great drivers car you'll notice they more or less retain the same head very similar to the e30 but now they've actually just got a plastic shield over the front of them protecting them more or less from the elements but still had that very trademark round double round headlight look with the small front grille very similar to the e30 but now of course these dressed are dressing things up you have a an improved front down you have the rockers that will gives it a more modern look improve mirrors everything was much dressed up from the previous generation they did a great job in trying to doll these up everything was more advanced the taillights now looked more custom moulded they didn't have those fabricated almost kit car looking taillights everything looked a lot more custom I mean the car was dressed up it had a lot more safety features and it overall was a great car because it had four-cylinder engines in a 318 you could get a 316 318 you can get a 320 inline six you can get a 325 inline six you could get a 328 and most importantly they came either in a manual or automatic transmission and it really satisfied the majority of the buyers out there it was a great car in its day still fairly lightweight still fairly simple and a great drivers car all the way around was really true to the ultimate driving machine and then we move into the 90s and along comes the wonderful 3 Series this is the e46 generation now you'll notice the headlights are a lot cleaner now they're a little more rounded they're a little more molded the front hood becomes a longer component now instead of cutting off at the top that actually wraps right around front air dam a lot nicer yet than the previous generation a36 again natural improvements the rocker panels are very nice they're even cleaner looking than in the e36 the trim the side door trim was a lot cleaner on these cars as well we have this nice molded trim now it does a lot better job of matching the paint colors mirrors are nice pretty conventional stuff of course you've got much better wheel options now in the newer cars tail lights really really nice much better than you found typically in some of the other tail lights up to this point you know lots of nice dressed up features in these cars this one here does not have the sunroof sunroof delete I guess but generally these cars were pretty distinguishable mainly from the front end you have this interesting grille up front here as well as the over-the-top front nose that's the distinguishing features primarily over the e36 but lots of subtle little changes made it a much more desirable car than before again an extension of the driving dynamics it was very similar to the e36 but again as this generation moved on you had more and more and more different options like the 330s and in some markets diesels and again autos or manuals better and more safety features than you typically found in the e36 and then what do we have over here we have the next generation which came out around 2005 we have the e 90 or 92 this one's a 92 because it's a coupe so all of a sudden now you have coupes sedans as you did in the e46 of course as well and e36 you could get coupes and sedans as well but this one is an e 92 so it is the e 90 series the e series the last of the e series and lots of big changes with this generation look at the rocker now it's very integrated it's no longer a separate rocker panel it's actually a lot more incorporated in the body and it wraps around a lot cleanly a lot more cleanly the mirrors now at least in the coupe are a lot more pointed more sharp and definitely sporty you're looking you've got some really interesting creases now new to the brand you've got this crease that runs the length of the car whereas before if you remember the e46 and 36 they actually had that molding that went halfway up the door now you have this crease that's up higher and it's what actually forms the upper end here and it ties the hood and it gives it that flare right here it's a great little styling piece as well now they have another crease along the hood so lots of different creases in this this is new for the brand the 3-series till now we're a lot more squared off and and conventional and very conservative this style here is where they really stepped up they they definitely stepped it up with their styling Department when they moved into the E Series not everybody loves this style but you have to admit it's definitely leagues ahead in terms of overall styling design and the concepts for sure the car is much much more advanced looking No Corsa taillights a lot more round looking again a little more up-to-date a little bit more modern for sure the rear bumpers again less pronounced bumper now it becomes a lot more molded the bumpers more molded in becomes more of a one-piece look you don't have that separate piece looking bumper compression bumper everything sort of molds and flows better in this car if there's one thing I can say better about the e90 series and e92 is flow all the lines flow the car flares nicely ever throws the lines everything looks very intentional and deliberate now I look at this car the grille the conventional grille although it's a little bit bigger a little straightened out from the previous generations now the headlights as they did with the 5 Series they do more of a wraparound now of a sudden than they did in previous generations where the previous 30 6 and 46 we're a little bit more centered and they were a little more straight now sudden we do a wraparound now you'll notice that wraparound headlight pretty distinctive look integrated fog lights again front valence is quite molded it's it's just a better flowing piece than you typically found in some of the older generation BMWs wheels lots of great wheel packages in some cases very large wheel packages particularly in the m3 when you stepped into that they had tall wheels you can get 19-inch wheels very very stylish exercise and a really really great car that's very popular today the e90 and e92 is still a very very popular design just based on its overall contemporary style and performance capabilities depending on what you're looking for you can get diesel engines you can get four cylinders six cylinders m3s which have a v8 in them there's lots of different options Diesel's in certain markets very very great car lots of nice styling accents again they really stepped it up on styling here lots of nice trim that is sort of new to the brand again they use kind of a normally in the past they've used more of a conventional standardized style a trim now they're actually making putting some style to the look and some of these patterns and designs the handles again a lot more conventional lots of cool safety features and whatnot in these cars as well and now you have other things like soft touch you can unlock the door here at just a touch if you have the key in your pocket so lots of great fact lots of great design elements and certainly a lot of great safety and conveniences in this generation now one more thing to note with the e90 series this is the first generation that they really settled in with turbocharging particularly in these straight-6 engines so if we pop the hood you'll notice this was BMWs first attempt or one of their first attempts at a seriously powerful inline twin-turbo 6-cylinder engine what we have here the n54 is known for its performance attributes its tuning capabilities and overall it's just it was reaching for the stars when BMW designed this engine lots of power lots potentially on top but controversial because of its some of its reliability concerns with leaks and between leaks and wastegate rattles and all kinds the and all kinds issues like that and then we move here this is the next generation that's the f-series this is the car that came was almost current at least up until this year now unfortunately this car was still a little bit dated because no BMW realized that the gauge cluster in this car was still analog meantime and Audi was doing digital dashes and a lot more unique interesting technology on the interior of the car whereas BMW is still a little bit old-school and conventional now if you look at this other than it was just recently the current model other than that it still had a very you know generation look very similar generation to the to the e90 they had a very similar kidney grille to the e90 the headlights were still wraparound wraparound a lot like the e90 was the only difference is now you had the LED headlights which were a beautiful touch everybody's going led BMW had the Connie and BMW had to get on board with that as well so they did that kidney grilles pretty standard everything else was pretty standard the front nose was very similar to the later generation the newer facelifted he 90 which this is not as the early version but the later version of that was very similar to the f-series in terms of the front spoiler so they didn't make drastic Changez when they moved into the f-series cars now in the f-series cars you have other things going on you have upgraded wheel packages substantially larger wheel packages in many cases but if you look at the side moldings again now this is a sedan so it's a little bit different but again you're going with more of a conventional rocker panel very simplistic look again but again you'll notice the theme the f-series you've got that crease along the side almost like you do over here the crease on the 90 is pretty much the same crease as the f-series cars now you'll notice the handles stolen from the e 90 and 92 pretty similar they're most the other panels are very similar on this car as they were on the 90 now the one big change at the back of course is the taillights quite a bit different on the taillights now this is a sedan so it will look a little different however the bumper is a little bit nicer now this is the 340 so this is their high-end version this is the performance version that's the non-m performance version with the b-58 engine but the backs bumper is a little bit slicker than you'd find on the earlier 90s the rear bumper is really nice here they've got a little bit more integration going on there they have a little bit of separation different materials gives it a richer look you've got these great little sharp accents here you'll notice on the e90 it's a little simpler wraparound they've just built on that and they've made it a little nicer on the f-series cars now another thing that you're gonna find interesting this one here is the 340 so that's the newer version of what you would find in the e90 which this is the n54 and later you get the n55 and the newer versions but this now is the b-58 which is also a 3 liter inline 6 cylinder turbocharged engine single turbo twin scroll produced substantially more power than this car and this car is a lot more reliable so far it's looking like that b-58 turbocharged 6-cylinder engines a lot more reliable in here it has well over 300 horse versus the standard 300 ponies in there just mainly unreliability it's a better system closed deck design they do better things for cooling the system it's just a better more well packaged and engineered and drivetrain than you had an e 90 now the other thing with this series the F Series is you could also get that's the first generation where they got into turbo charging four-cylinder engines for their non high-end cars for example if you bought this in a 330 this car was a four-cylinder 2-liter four-cylinder turbocharged engine versus the previous generation which was a 3 liter inline 6 normally aspirated so now all of a sudden in the f-series they bump things they went down for the sake of fuel economy and trying to save the environment they went down to a smaller engine so even though it's called a 330 or a 328 they actually went down in displacement to a 2 liter four-cylinder but it was turbocharged two different states of tune depending if he bought the 323 28 or 330 they were all more or less the same engine in different states of tune and a340 of course now is just a newer version of the e90 so they made some changes than some improvements on technology some improvements on safety a few cosmetic changes like the LED headlights but overall not a drastic change from the e90 and soul that takes us to the current generation the g20 we have the G Series 3 series car right here guys this is the latest is this car in fact better than everything that we've looked at so far there's lots of reasons to suggest this is a better car acceleration it's going to be much quicker it's a faster car it handles better it's already been proven we've driven these cars I already know I can attest that it's a very very quick car with these finely tuned transmissions and power trains these cars are very very quick very sporty now this is the first series because now we are talking at a time where this is a 330 because the current the the next generation 340 isn't out yet this is the first car that they released in the G series of 330 and again it's the 2-liter turbocharged engine that produces a whole host of power but it is still an exceptionally quick little car for what its power what it's powered by beautiful car lots of cosmetic updates again if you look at the rocker it's going back more to the e90 you'll notice it kind of swirls up there a little bit it's a little nicer rocker panel than you found in the f-series cars it's going back a little bit to generations ago wheel packages again a little more of the same very similar to what you'd find in any of the f-series cars the rear bumper this is the interesting part you'll notice the rear taillights are the big news this beautiful finish on there now this is very much in line taking this car currently to the current model lineups everything from the x5 s X threes 5 Series cars even this is the current look and all this taillight assembly is really just to bring this car in line with the current model now of course the tail end here down here you've got twin exhaust you've also got this upgraded bumper looks very sharp I mean you've got these cheap plastic inserts but outside of that it does actually have a little bit of a unique look to it it does look sporty-er than previous now of course the handles are different we finally updated the handles on these know it's a much smoother cleaner cleaner handle now it's recessed so you can get your hand and behind there but it's a cleaner design than previous not that it's better it's just slightly cleaner a little different again other little interesting accents we've got this cute little accent behind the wheel here in the front again you've still got that common crease very common for the 3-series BMW that crease that carries from front to back but now as they've done in the 5 Series not sure if you've noticed but the m5 they've got a secondary crease that runs here that's not in line with this primary crease so they've got two separate accents built out there the mirrors very cutesy you've got the inset LED signals moving around to the front very very sharp front end I have to say by far the biggest upgrade in my opinion you've got these grilles that open up as needed really sharp looking very clean when you're not using it the headlights again much improved you've got these LEDs looks more like an angry that just got told some bad news at work very aggressive looking headlights you got this cute little point up here everything is well engineered very well designed pretty stylish looking out overall and you've got a oversized sunroof now if you look at this sunroof in here it's quite large actually relative to the size of the roof you've got this huge sunroof which takes up a good half of the roofline versus versus the e90 sunroof looks distinctively smaller this way there's less glass happening there so on the other one you have it extends back a little ways further so you get an extra few inches of glass on the sunroof on the new G car now like with every modern BMW they've done a lot of work on the interior to really dress things up nicely they've made a lot of nice significant changes in there from the iDrive system being a lot larger and more crisp a lot more chrome look really sharply design interior the downside for me is that transmission what are we talking about here did you know folks that this car is now in North America only able to come in a automatic transmission 8-speed automatic transmission only available in this car so that begs the question does this car really deserve the name the ultimate driving machine and if you need a car with a manual transmission you may have to check back to one of these this is the last model that you could get a manual transmission and a turbocharged inline six or four-cylinder engine made it together this is the last generation so the only saving grace if you really need to have that manual transmission or you want a DCT which again you cannot get in this car you're gonna have to step up to the m3 the m3 of the m4 are still retained with two options manual or double clutch transmission in the M cars this unfortunately as well as the new 340 to be released or coming out will also unfortunately not have a manual transmission available in the North American market so I really hope that helped you make up your mind which 3-series car is the one for you if not definitely drop me a line below and of course it most importantly make sure you click on that endscreen link that's going to take you to my BMW reliability series and it's going to share a whole host of information for you folks out there that are shopping for a BMW but I really hope this talk to you guys soon catch you next time buh-bye
