this video is brought to you by Squarespace The Beatles discography is littered with compilations between 1966 and 2000 Emi and apple released them in all kinds of themes and colors but there hasn't been a new one for 23 years in this video we'll look at all of those official compilations and judge which one we think is the best and also discuss if now is the time for a new one I'm Andrew from parlogram and welcome to the Beatles best compilation [Music] The Beatles Community is currently Rife with rumor and speculation about what's going to be released next [Music] well one cat was let out of the bag a few weeks ago when Paul McCartney himself accidentally on purpose let it slip that a new Beetle single which is sure to be now and then had been completed which we think is lined up for release at the end of the year [Music] rumors are also abound about a new compilation album which although isn't what hardcore Beatles fans want I think is exactly what the Beatles catalog needs after all it's been well over 20 years since the release of this their last major compilation which has now sold well over 13 million copies worldwide but is there such a thing as a Flawless Beatles compilation well to find out let's run through all the official ones and I'll tell you what I think ranks as the best and what I think a new compilation should look like thank you The Beatles first official compilation a collection of Beatles oldies appeared in December 1966 in the UK which was the time of uncertainty amongst both fans and Emi not just about the musical Direction The Beatles were taking but if they would actually continue as a group the album drew a line in the sand between the end of the group as a touring entity and the beginning of the studio years and a more mature approach to their work but this album was completely ignored by capital in the states who tended to reserve such hits albums for a quick cash in at the end of a group's career despite being packed full of hits the album peaked at only number seven and became their first album not to reach number one and that's not surprising because apart from the track bad boy UK fans already had everything on it however it made the perfect Christmas gift to give to someone who didn't have any it remained a steady seller throughout the 1970s but was finally deleted in 1986 when it's placed in the official album Canon was taken by Magical Mystery Tour with its unattractive cover art and compressed and mushy sound quality it's today one for the completist collector only however unlike most of their original albums it's still cheap and easy to find today and its random track listing makes for an interesting listen in 1973 as a direct response to an unofficial 60 track 4 album compilation put together by a small company in New Jersey called Omega Apple released their best known and biggest selling Beatles compilation albums now in today's simply as the red and the blue albums these two double album sets were a massive success and became Gateway albums into the Beatles music not just for me but for a whole new generation of Beatles fans but whilst they're packaging and sound quality of the UK pressings especially was first class the track selection of one of them was majorly flawed significant tracks such as I saw her standing there were left off 1962-1966 and Apple's policy of using only self-pen songs meant that signature cover versions like Twist and Shout and Long Tall Sally were also missing also there was the issue with the second disc which carried six tracks from Rubber Soul but just Yellow Submarine and Ella the Rigby from revolver 1967-70 was a much more satisfying album and holds a special place in my heart as it was the first Beatles album I bought with my own money but it wasn't until 1976 and the end of The Beatles contract that the next compilation appeared [Music] rock and roll music and the album which followed it love songs were capital-led projects right from the start and were both unashamed cash grabs if you'd like to know more about both these albums check out our detailed videos about them elsewhere on the channel the links will be in the description the next compilation Rarities was initially issued as a bonus album in the Beatles collection box set in December 1978 but was eventually given a standalone release in October 1979. although a good idea poor presentation and tape research let it down and the promised rare mixes were not delivered and the capital version released in March 1980 did a much better job at actually delivering some Rarities October 1980 saw the release of Beatles ballads an Emi conceived compilation which was ignored by capital and by the majority of the record buying public not just in the UK but in Europe too and apart from its cover contains little of interest to anyone however Emi bounced back the following month with this unlike bc13 this was not just a straight reissue of their Studio albums and was compiled by a man named Simon Sinclair this underrated eight album set was released on November 3rd 1980 and was only available via emi's mail order world record Club this exclusive 124 track set was advertised in the National newspapers and was available in both vinyl and cassette formats for a very reasonable 29 pound 75 which is about 180 pounds or 230 dollars today now this set wasn't exclusive to the UK it was also issued in a number of other countries around the world for example in Australia France Switzerland Mexico and Japan this set not only gave Emi the opportunity to deliver some of the promised rare stereo versions which have been missing from Rarities but also some other rare mixes to satisfy collectors for example there was the original Ringo on drums version of Love Me Do the untrimmed hi-hat version of All My Loving the extended ending to and I love her a bunch of stereo mixes from the US album yesterday and today Penny Lane with a trumpet ending and a composite mix of I Am The Walrus from the US Rarities albums and a few others if you're interested in finding out more about this set guess what we've already done a video about it a link to which is you know where this set really is the best Beatles Vinyl box set bargain out there and with prices of bc13 going through the roof you can pick up this for a fraction of the cost of one of those making songs from their films was a capital project through and through by the same team had put together the Rarities album two years earlier now despite its artwork I have a real soft spot for this album because beneath the packaging it was an interesting well thought through concept which certainly made more sense in the states perhaps more than it did in the UK Capital even went to the trouble of including mixes which were at that time unavailable in the US namely the UK stereo mix of I Am The Walrus A Hard Day's Night and Ticket to Ride in true stereo and they even created a unique stereo edit of I should have known better where they fixed the harmonica Dropout in the intro unfortunately it wasn't a commercial success and didn't even chart in the UK despite help from the movie medley single which reached number 10 in the singles chart a video about which you can also see Elsewhere on the channel needless to say both album and single were quickly deleted and have since been erased from official Beatles history now timing is everything in the music business and Emi thought they got it spot on when on the back of the success of the Love Me Do single in October 1982 they released 20 Greatest Hits unfortunately disagreements about track listing between Emi and capital led to this insipid looking and sounding album which failed to sell and was swiftly deleted after the release of all the regular studio albums on CD everyone expected the next digital release to be the red and the blue albums instead Emi with the help of Mark lewison compiled what was the most sensible and comprehensive Beatles compilation to date pass Masters volumes 1 and 2 was released in March 1988 and put together all of the A and B sides of their Singles Plus the long tool Sally EP German language tracks and Across the Universe from the 1969 World Wildlife Fund charity album not forgetting the 1970s stereo mix of the Inner Light despite its dull-looking artwork it was a rare moment where both fans and collectors were happy and its updated version the mono one especially still stands up today as one of the best compilations in their catalog as I said before timing is everything and although it will be another 12 years before another Beatles compilation appeared Apple's timing was bang on with its well-designed modern looking cover inner sleeves showing picture sleeves from around the world and psychedelic portrait photos Allah The White Album it appealed to fans new and old and it's no surprise that it went on to sell millions as the red and the blue albums had done for me and for many others of my generation The Beatles 1 became a Gateway into the Beatles music for a new generation despite a welcome upgrade in 2015 where it was accompanied by the OnePlus DVD it's still a fundamentally flawed compilation mainly due to its emission of Please Please Me and Strawberry Fields Forever but now 23 years later a lot of things have changed and although a new compilation is well overdue who will it be aimed at and who is going to buy it well I think it can't be just a straight reissue of the red and the blue albums in a box after all that was done in France in 1981. I think it has to be something along the lines of the world record set not an eight album box set but one which contains not just good sounding original tracks but also includes a few Rarities and unreleased mixes or even some live tracks rather than just reuse the 2015 remixes from one they could demixel the tracks and present them in Dolby Atmos for the digital set and on colored vinyl for the vinyl collectors and this could give us proper stereo mixes of love we do and she loves you and before anyone starts shouting sacrilege don't forget the original mixes aren't going anywhere any new mix is just another listening option which you can either take or leave Apple's challenge is to balance a new compilation between two camps not all fans of The Beatles music are collectors who want to hear every detail variation or take I think the main aim of a new compilation is to enroll a new generation of fans into the Beatles Legacy so in that case they could issue two different editions one for Joe public maybe in the form of a regular two or three disc set and then one for collectors as say a deluxe box set with some alternate takes or unreleased tracks people today don't care about listening to the songs in the order they were released and are used to making up their own playlists any new compilation needs to be curated for enjoyment rather than historical accuracy maybe something like Elvis's 2003 album Second To None which included tracks which didn't appear on the 30 number one hits album the previous year and also included a previously unreleased recording all mixed and Mastered by the best in the business which in the Beatles case means Charles Martin also would now and then be part of such a compilation or is that reserved for another project who knows but it will make a great title for a career spanning compilation looking further ahead Peter Jackson is rumored to be working on a project based around the star Club tapes where he uses his own AI technology to clean up the audio tapes and then using pictures from the performances animate The Beatles playing them let me know what you think about that in the comments and indeed anything else I've mentioned in this video to answer my original question which compilation I like the best well my vote has to go to the world records box set but as far as regular albums go it has to be 67 to 70. but what about you what's your favorite Beatles compilation do tell me and everyone else about it in the comments I'll be back next week with a look at this but I'll say bye for now and thanks for watching [Music]
