[Music] well here's what i propose why don't we go on a little mini road trip today you can see the front electric motor the rear electric motor the battery and then where the power is going at any given time i'm gonna time tommy to see how long it takes to fill up get one more squeeze yeah all right now for the moment of truth okay so here's our pull-up menu charging [Music] friday may 10th [Music] hey guys welcome to episode eight of our thrifty three series and today is a special day because i have challenged tommy to bring the most fuel-efficient all-wheel drive car sold in america to find out if it's cheaper to drive a traditional all-wheel drive internal combustion engine car or a dual motor all-wheel drive tesla so tommy has brought [Music] a hybrid tommy you brought the prius i didn't bring any old prius though this is the prius all-wheel drive e this is the most efficient all-wheel drive gasoline-powered car you can buy yeah and we of course have the dual-motor long-range tesla which makes it one of the most fuel-efficient all-wheel drive electric cars you can buy so we need a test what do you say we do well here's what i propose why don't we go on a little mini road trip today yep go up to the mountains about 36 miles up to estes park colorado 36 miles down and we'll see how much it cost to fill up the prius with gasoline and the tesla with electricity from a supercharger yeah i like that so basically we're not talking the traditional fuel economy loop but we're talking how much money it actually cost so we'll go up to spark yep uh then we'll have lunch up there yep and we'll drive down uh have you filled this up already yep so i topped it off it's ready to go um and did you flip the tesla fill up the tesla the tesla is all charged up so when we come down uh we'll fill this up again yep and see what the pump says and we'll take that to the supercharger and see what tesla says it costs us to charge up yeah for sure and that's coming up right now [Music] so this video is all about taking technology to the next level so why don't you show them how you fill up the kona if we were at a gas station oh you just got okay wow one step so if you like your smartphone you're probably gonna like the tesla if you're an old-fashioned analog kind of person you're probably going to hate the tesla because there isn't much of anything analog that's left in this vehicle hey before we head to essex park tell me i got you something because hybrids are just inherently the most uncool vehicle so i know you're you know just a young graduate out of college and you want to be cool so let me show you what i got you dude check this out oh flat pill man now now you're cool love it [Music] hey speaking of cool you didn't even bother to wash the tesla uh yeah that's an issue i'm afraid to wash it because as you can tell it's still damaged it's been three weeks now since somebody backed this off and damaged it uh and i'm afraid to wash it because i don't want to get water inside the light and then the light's gonna stop working and then it won't be legal so it's dirty and we're still waiting to hear from tesla and hopefully our repair shop as to when we can get parts with this thing so we can actually fix it let's hit the road come on [Music] you know it's really difficult to compare the fuel efficiency of an electric car to a hybrid to a ice car or in other words an internal combustion engine car because they use different forms of energy so this test is really cool because it basically compares how much it costs to drive each car now keep in mind that we're doing this in the typical tfl way and that tommy will fill up or has filled up the prius and we're going to do this trip to estes park and back and then we'll fill it up again at the station and we'll see not only what the car says but what the pump says and me i'm going to take it to a supercharger and see how much tesla charges to fill this up with i guess electrons now keep in mind that the cost of electricity varies depending on when you fill up so if you fill up during the middle of the day when businesses are running their air conditioners and their heaters then the cost of electricity is more whereas they fill up at night it gets cheaper and of course that depends on your local utility but this is a great way to kind of see what the real world costs of taking a slight road trip are versus trying to compare mpg to mpge last time i supercharged this car tesla charged me 5.75 cents to fill it up and so right there we'll know after we supercharge it again how much tesla is charging us now that is built directly to my credit card so i actually never have to even swipe a card as you can see right now i've got 274 miles of range left but if you look there most of my battery is full i've got it set to the typical factory setting of about 277 278 miles of range batteries aren't happy if you fill them up all the way this is a dual motor long range so it does have a range of over 300 miles but we're not using all that range we're just using about 278 or 277 miles and of course there is my energy usage and i can change it from instant to average so average i've got about 266 miles of range instant depending on the way i'm driving right now i've got 240 miles of range so this line right here that shows me how much energy i'm using in real time if i let off the accelerator you can see that green line go left that means i'm regening a lot more power back into the battery and yeah basically i'm driving with only one foot this has such a powerful regen that i don't really even need to use my brake and it's in fact so powerful when i let off the gas that if i'm slowing down the brake lights turn on by themselves so if you look at my little tesla here every time i let off the accelerator the brake lights turn on [Music] welcome to the toyota prius and this is a car that a lot of you car guys out there really are not a big fan of for what it represents and how it goes about its business but it's a car that i personally love i think it's a really interesting piece of technology and for that i really respect what it does and how it does now this prius costs about 32 000 which in my opinion is a tremendous amount of value for what you get love it or hate it the styling certainly is unique but once you start diving into what you get for that 32 grand it really is pretty impressive first of all this previous all-wheel drive has been out in japan for a little while now but it just came to the us with this car and the all-wheel drive system is super unique now up front you have the 121 horsepower gasoline engine and electric motor that power the front wheels just like any other prius but out back you have a really small seven horsepower electric motor that powers just the rear wheel so there's no physical mechanical connection between the front and the back now the advantage of that little seven horsepower motor in the back is that it's kind of a little helper motor now what toyota's thinking with this car is you really only need all-wheel drive when you're accelerating away from a slippery surface or in certain conditions if the front wheels really slip so that electric motor only activates when it absolutely needs to so what that means is it's most active between zero and six miles an hour when you're accelerating away for example in snow so you don't get stuck and it disengages completely at 43 miles an hour so right now cruising along at about 60 it's not doing anything all that means is that the combined mpg is 50 miles per gallon on this all-wheel drive prius making it the most efficient gasoline you know because there's an electric system but gasoline driven vehicle you can buy or as tesla people call it ice internal combustion engine so you've got heated seats in this xle for both the front driver and the front passenger and they heat these they're like leatherette style seats but they're incredibly cushy and incredibly comfortable something that a lot of the older priuses really lacked you also have a heated steering wheel right here push the button and the steering wheel gets nice and toasty plus speaking of climate automatic climate so automatic you just set the temperature and then you have some ego settings you don't want to engage the air conditioning system but set it and off you go now other things you'll see about this previous is a really easy to use really convenient infotainment system here granted it's pretty small and in this one we don't have satellite radio which kind of sucks a little bit but the system itself is pretty much perfect bluetooth audio auxiliary usb cd really basic stuff and you also have some fun things in the screen like an energy monitor so you can see the front electric motor the rear electric motor the battery and then where the power is going at any given time you also have an additional set of screens up here and they do some really i think interesting stuff on the left you have your trip computer and your speedometer but the screen on the right is super configurable so this for example is my all-wheel drive screen and it shows you where power is going and how it's directed we also have an eco diary so you can track your average mpg over several days eco savings your drive monitor tells you how you're driving elapsed time um fuel consumption record and then this is kind of my favorite it's a system indicator that tells you your score so how efficiently you're driving which is 43 out of 100 which i'm being honest isn't that brilliant again you also have a little ev lights and essentially a throttle indicator that tells you when you're driving aggressively or when you're regening coasting on the left there another weird thing about the prius e all-wheel drive is that the battery is different from a standard prius a standard previous uses a lithium ion battery this car actually uses a nickel metal hydride battery and i've read that's because they work better in the cold and toyota is predicting that these all-wheel drive priuses are going to be sold in cold climates because that's where it snows that's raining the all-wheel drive but it is worth noting that it's about 150 pounds heavier than a standard front-wheel drive prius [Music] you might be wondering why are we going to ask this park well because first and foremost uh there's a supercharger up there not that we'll be using it but i want to check it out just to see what it looks like probably looks like all the rest of them but it's good to know that uh there's one right by rocky mountain national park but more importantly it's an uphill shot so it'll be uphill for the most part on the way there and downhill on the way back so i'm really curious to see if i'll actually regen any energy coming back down from us this park to boulder it's kind of rolling uphill and rolling downhill so when we get to estes park we'll have a little bit of lunch maybe um check out the supercharger and then i'll be curious to see how much power actually i can rejoin in the tesla on the way back down now tommy of course has regen as well but with this little puny battery it doesn't do much at least not in the same way that the tesla regens power in terms of direct competition how do these two vehicles compete the tesla's all-wheel drive system is a dual motor so it's on all the time to it's well we recently updated the software and it gave us an additional five miles per hour of top speed so i think it's up to about 145 or 50 miles an hour top speed and it's all wheel drive that whole time you also may be wondering how does the model 3 handle the twisties and you know what a lot better the prius i've got uh performance-ish tires at least a lot better than the priuses i've got a lot more torque and i think i've got a suspension that's set up for much sportier driving if you're really curious as to how good or bad this is on a race track check out our series hot or not where paul our race car driver took the performance version of this model 3 and put it through its paces not only did we get a 0 to 60 time but we also got a chance to see just how it grips when the going gets a little twisty like this [Music] so just as effortlessly as you could imagine away we go launch is hard off the line turns in pretty well putting power down a lot of traction stability control going on a little really over the hill so we're pretty much going straight uphill at this point from boulder colorado to estes park it's somewhat rolling but it's a lot of uphill um and the prius is a cvt and it kind of drones on and on once you're going up the hill now my mileage is really good on the flat we were getting you know 53 54 but now we've been going uphill for several miles we're down to mid 40s uh and it's if i'm being honest not all that brilliance in the twisties here it's not bad but it's certainly more tailored for long open highways than canyon carving the steering is artificially light and the throttle pedal doesn't do a whole lot when you really push it now the priest is pretty good off the line because you have that instant torque from the electric motors but once you're moving it kind of dies however that doesn't really matter because not many of you guys out there are buying the prius 4 performance handling and mountain fun what you do buy the prius for is usability and cool features and there are a ton of them including the best wireless charging mat i have ever seen it is so easy to use it is down here in the middle and it's large it's in charge it's easy to see it's easy to put your phone into it's perfect it fits all sorts of phones i love it unlike the model 3 this prius has a heads-up display so i don't have to take my eyes off the road at all to see what speed i'm doing plus if you do want a little bit more fun to drive if you want the throttle pedal to actually feel like it's not made out of mush there is a drive mode button where you can put it in normal eco or power and in power it picks up much quicker now for this drive because we're testing efficiency or cost to fill up the vehicles i'm going to leave it in eco there's also an ev mode which works at really low speeds like under 20 miles an hour haven't needed that because we're pretty much on this little two-lane highway so we're going 45. [Music] so i'm down to about 216 miles of range and we did not go whatever that is we had 277 so 50 miles we went less than that but it was all uphill it's about like 35-ish yeah yeah so i'm curious to see how much uh we'll recoup on the way back down should we get some lunch let's go get some lunch i know a good restaurant but it's not here it's down in town okay [Music] so i've got the uh roni for the tesla and it's a little confusing right because we're talking about mpge here that's why we're doing this to find out really how much it costs because tesla gets 120 in the city 112 on the highway and 116 mpge combined and it says it uses 29 kilowatts per hours per 100 miles 29 kilowatt hours per hour yeah yeah yeah well the prius gets 52 city 48 highway 50 combined that of course is mpg because it's a gas car but we're after taking to the pump to see how much it costs to fill them back up to where they work now how much is your car uh yeah well this car uh sticker is fifty six thousand seven hundred and the previous is just 32 146 so a lot of value in the previous of course you could get the base model tree for a lot less i think the number that does make sense though is annual fuel costs because that's really what we're going to be measuring so what is your say 750 yeah mine is 550. that's not that different well 200 less a year nothing so we'll find out if it's what is it what percentage would that be like 30 less about give or take so we'll find out if that happens to be the case when we actually get back to boulder and fill yours up and plug mine in [Music] we're coming down the mountain now and you'll see that my score has gone up dramatically on this drive since i restarted at an estus so 75 out of 100 points the score resets every time we turn the car off and that's because it's all downhill and when i go downhill the prius regens when i especially use brake you can see the little blue bar extends and then when i have to accelerate just a little bit because my battery is filling up i can just run it on electric only mode once again not ev mode i'm not pushing the button i'm still letting the car figure it out but because i'm just coasting along the engines off so it doesn't need a run it's running all the accessories off the battery or just cruising along and the battery charge is there it's pretty cool it shows you how much charge is in the battery but it doesn't really matter because the car manages the battery percentage itself to keep it in the optimal range and you're never gonna like run out of battery because the prius is smarter than you'll ever be [Music] okay so if i had to guess i'd say you're at 210 miles of range after the mountain yeah i mean we made it down the mountain it did regen and i was a 208 and i'm at 213. oh so you got five miles i got five miles but we also went you know probably another what 10 miles yeah for sure yeah we're about 50 now um so i um i didn't regen well i did regen a lot but i don't know how much in terms of miles because it's a hybrid but i have a full battery so ready to get to the gas station your battery's about the size of my phone dude no yeah it's like it's like this big it's heavy it's a big it's a big brick maybe twice the size of my phone yeah okay [Music] anyway we're back in boulder and uh it's weird being in a gas station in a tesla i'm gonna time tommy to see how long it takes to fill up because obviously it's gonna take a little bit longer for me to do it so let's just stop watch here and start that's how long it takes for him to go and do it okay so we're paying here at our local gas station let's see for regular unleaded 277 essentially so still under three dollars now of course this is going to be different depending on where you live people are giving me a dirty look at the tussle over there tubby you know they're wondering why i'm at this gas station give it one more squeeze yeah oh so five dollars and 38 cents to drive up and down from estes yeah yeah so 538 people are wondering what kind of uh fuel economy that is we should do the math yeah i can do the math you do the math and next stop tommy is less than a quarter mile from here is the supercharger so we're gonna have a quarter mile more of driving but we'll do that next but this is really busy here once you do the map and i'll drive the supercharger you follow me i'll meet you there two minutes i know three minutes and six seconds three minutes yeah but yeah i had to get the credit card i wasn't sure what you were doing so i could have done it in probably two minutes [Music] all right so let me show you something here i timed tommy here's a stopwatch that's how long it took him to fill up and i'm gonna reset it and you're gonna tie me yeah hang on i'll time myself i'll start are we starting now sure all right starting now all right while we're waiting to supercharge tommy did you do the math yeah so we went 89.1 miles okay in total um since i filled up the prius you know where we started yeah divide that by 1.943 yep which is the gallons so we did about 46. what did the car say 53. whoa that's really off i wonder why it's off it's a lot off huh yeah yeah but still 46 is amazing considering we went pretty hill uphill and then uh back downhill uh and the question is how much was it all together five dollars and 38 cents so let's see if using the supercharger here in boulder if the tesla is cheaper yeah i'm going to say it's about the same we're kind of charging at peak hours right now yeah we'll see so what do you want to do let's go get a beverage starbucks starbucks you know i think tesla is good for starbucks because what else are we gonna do [Music] yesterday there was sun and there was rain beauty in the monday and as the light startled our eyes and now [Music] charging is complete we started about 278 stopped at 278. how long do you think it took there you go 35 minutes yeah so 10 times as long yeah more than that huh more than 10 times as long you know how does tesla charge for this right they do it differently based on different superchargers yeah so some superchargers or what tesla encourages that most superchargers charge per kilowatt yeah right so it's it's based on how many kilowatts you put in but depending on the region there may be different regulations and some charge per minute okay we don't know how ours charges yeah in the minute there's actually two tiers of cost depending on how full the battery is yeah so if you're more up to date on how that works let us know in the comments below we'd love to read about it yeah yeah all right well let's go see how much it cost us to charge up the tesla yeah with a supercharger [Music] all right now for the moment of truth okay so here's our pull-up menu charging already maintained 5.75 [Music] oh my it costs more in the tesla cost more in the tesla now gas at our place was like 270 something yeah so if gas gets really expensive and electricity stays constant that'll change but for now the gas car was still cheaper yeah but i bet you i had more than like 40 cents of fun yep driving up there yeah for sure whereas you know you were a prius i'd also be really curious to see how much different this number would be yeah if you plugged it in at home and use like regular power or or even if you plug it in at night you know yeah yeah that might change and if you know how they set their pricing models on the supercharging stations let us know in the comments below yeah because basically it was about 100 miles for five dollars and seventy-five cents it's like about ninety-eight nine years yeah well there you have it guys thanks for watching this episode of the thrifty three uh and uh come back next time what are we gonna do next time tommy um i don't know we'll figure it out alright here we go you got a better start my reaction time was horrible but we're neck and neck see you guys next time ciao wait what what are you doing the most important part yeah oh no that's a boring fart why don't you do a short ripper short short ripper yeah nope you gotta do the ludicrous part can't do that in the prius you know that last um update they give us better no i games them they're not no they thought they updated it i know i just played them last night and they weren't very very not that much better yeah that's right they're right it's right there yeah then you go atari that much better what do you want to play tempest i've never played tempest asteroids okay you apparently you can use the the controls on the steering wheel yeah push to start yeah use the controls on steering wheel oh yeah look at that how do i shoot the other wheel here's the other wheel yeah we have to push in to start didn't go so well didn't go so well oh that's how you shoot there we go oh look at that i'm getting the hang of it now oh yeah oh all right come back next time guys ciao
