[Music] [Applause] [Music] welcome back everyone in last week's video I showed you how to make a self centering mortising jig for your plunge router in this week's video I'm going to show you how to turn that mortising jig into a loose tenon and mortise in system loose Tenon's are pretty common especially when you're working with a plunge router and doing mortise and tenon joinery where you can get some more efficiency in your workshop is when you standardize the method by which you make your loose Tenon's and set up your jig so if I've marked the center point on my wood where the mortise is going to be I can always reference off the center and I'm also going to take an exacto knife and Mark it at the bottom here so I have something permanent to reference off of so I'm just gonna do a little notch so now I've got lines for either softlock I can right away set them down where they need to be and I have the exact dimensions of that mortise length and of course I can make a few more sizes but that will be my general standard size that I'll work with in my shop which will be about an inch and a half on my test piece I'm going to mark it with my set square again on each end so that the lines there and then I'm going to just double check now I said about an inch and a half that was approximate I think where we netted out was an inch and five-eighths it looks like it's okay that it's a little bit over I've got this piece of scrap walnut this is a quarter inch thick so I'm going to see if that fits yeah that's a that's a decent snug quarter-inch fit that we've got here so we'll use this scrap piece of wood to reference when I cut for thickness I'm going to use this piece of scrap pine as my floating tenon before I make my cut I've referenced the width or rather the length of the mortise so that's the waist I'm going to cut that off but before I do that I want something to hold on to so I'm going to cut it to thickness first so it's okay if it over cuts a little bit so a little higher than that line is fine and then you use my piece of walnut as a reference all right so right now I've got my router with a round over bit right here installed I've lowered it because it needs to be a fairly shallow round over cut because I'm dealing with a thinner piece of wood only quarter inch so I'm gonna give it a shot and see how we do so the final step is to cut these two lengths now that I'm happy with the overall shape of it I'm going to cut mine at an inch and a half just by hand I've got a pretty decent fit this fits in similar to a domino I can just push it in with my thumb and it's in there a little trick I like to use to get the loose Tenon's to take up glue is to compress them just slightly in a metal vise like this one and that just creates some indentations effectively these will become little reservoirs for the glue a little bit of glue a little bit of glue on this side that joint worked out really well I'm pretty happy with it it's solid didn't take any glue at all hardly to join this together and I could start to make chairs tables whatever I need using this loose tenon mortising system if you want to make you loose Tenon's out of hardwood you can totally do that that will add extra strength to your joint if you want to buy me a beer head on over to my patreon page right here please remember to Like share and subscribe if you haven't done so already there are a couple more videos on this side that you can watch until next time thanks for watching and have a great day [Music]
